Virtuella · 7 February 2011 · Chapter 6: Escapism (Kira)

"love at first smell" - what a delightful expression! Great poem, I like it very much.

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm not much of a poet, and in fact this was my first attempt at anything that doesn't exist for the characters in-verse. So I really appreciate your compliments!

Larner · 6 February 2011 · Chapter 6: Escapism (Kira)

She is almost ready for that adventure, even if it is merely a trip out to Bree and back again. Dear Kira--all good things WILL come to her in the end. Hope she can fit a bottle of wine in there as well, to toast the Birthday when it comes.

Author's reply

There are still a few things that Kira needs before she can have an adventure, the chiefest of which is a heart in the right place. Till she knows exactly what it is that she wants, I don't think that a trip, even only to Bree, would do much good.

Antane · 5 February 2011 · Chapter 6: Escapism (Kira)

Start saving, Kira, and keep dreaming! I'm with you! Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Yes, but even if she did have them, she'd have to wait six years before she could do anything with them, and even then there'd be all the people she's leaving behind and no guarantee that she'd be happy...

Virtuella · 22 August 2010 · Chapter 5: September 22, 1551 (Kira)

Aww, this is delightful!

Author's reply

Thanks!

Virtuella · 22 August 2010 · Chapter 4: Doomed to Repeat It (Rosemary)

Oh, this is good, to see things from Rosemary's perspective for once!

Author's reply

Thanks! I've finally got things lined up where Kira can begin to see things from her mother's perspective, and I realized that I should probably set her a good example and actually get in the hobbit's mind. (Previously I've understood where she's coming from, but never actually written anything from her p.o.v.)

Dreamflower · 22 August 2010 · Chapter 4: Doomed to Repeat It (Rosemary)

It's late for her to come to this realization, almost too late. If she only knew that Kira's forged her own prospects and that her bookishness is the mainstay of it. It's not the kind of prospects her mother would ever understand, and that's where it's so sad. All Rosemary has wanted for Kira is security, never considering there is more to it than that.

Author's reply

Whether it's too late or not depends entirely on Rosemary's ability to revise her behavior, which can be really difficult this many years into the game. Especially because she has no idea that Kira has her own plans, because Kira will never tell her. In case you can't tell, I'm doing a lot of work on their relationship right now. I've always felt really bad for Rosemary, but I think it's hard for readers--especially in modern society--to understand her perspective. Probably because almost everything I write is written from Kira's.

Dreamflower · 22 August 2010 · Chapter 5: September 22, 1551 (Kira)

Aww...this is *so* Kira! She really is such a romantic! (And I mean that in the old-fashioned sense, and not the modern one.)

Author's reply

She really is! Thank you!

Antane · 25 September 2009 · Chapter 5: September 22, 1551 (Kira)

I raised my glass of orange juice (since I drink nothing stronger) and silently spoke to him. I wonder how many others made their own toasts? Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Who knows? I'm just glad to see Kira holding her own little celebration since it's canon there was nothing done in public in the Shire...

Dreamflower · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 5: September 22, 1551 (Kira)

Oh, I love this idea of Kira paying a silent tribute to Frodo! Wonderful!

Author's reply

I really couldn't see her not doing something like that, not on his birthday which she knows is celebrated outside the Shire.

Dreamflower · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 3: Dancing and Dancing (Sandra, Kerry) - AWS Ch. 2

Kerry is so wise and so practical and long-thinking...somehow it makes me think he takes a good deal after his magnificent ancestor.

Author's reply

I've always loved the practicality of Merry Brandybuck, so it wasn't too difficult to guess that he very practically made sure that some of those traits would be passed down to his descendants.

Dreamflower · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 2: First Grief (Kerry, Elfstan, Sandra) - KatM Ch. 14

This is a marvelous corner to fill! I had wondered how Sandra had taken the news-- now I know! Just think, it was Kira who brought them together!

Author's reply

Obviously Sandra had to have received a lot of support in her grieving since she seems to be pretty stable by the time she and Kira run into each other in April (whereas Kira is if anything worse off). In this case a person like Kerry (who was obliquely responsible for the mess) must have been a huge help because he somewhat understands what she's going through. And yes, Kira did bring them together. But I don't think they've told her that because the specific action that did is so distressing.

Dreamflower · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 1: Paper Recollections (Sandra, Elanor) - KatM Ch. 14

Oh, how wonderful to see this here! Thank you again for this beautiful peice!

Author's reply

I thought I might as well put it out in public on the 22nd! And you're most welcome! Thank you for the awesome prompt!

Larner · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 5: September 22, 1551 (Kira)

Yes! Yes--that is the right thing that night!

Author's reply

There are some times when Kira can't help but defiantly celebrate. Thank you!

Larner · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 3: Dancing and Dancing (Sandra, Kerry) - AWS Ch. 2

What a delightful reason for being careful! Heh!

Author's reply

I like to think that hobbit society had Certain Boundaries, kept up more so that the young would have them to follow and rail against than for more practical reasons, as generally speaking hobbits are smart enough to judge well in specific cases of romance. I wouldn't be surprised if Sandra's parents knew of Kerry's affection for her all this while and privately kept an eye on them to make sure he wouldn't jump the gun. But in the meantime it does make for a cute romance.

Larner · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 2: First Grief (Kerry, Elfstan, Sandra) - KatM Ch. 14

Oh, how definitely a tragedy designed to draw these two together!

Author's reply

A part of me thinks that they might have gotten together eventually anyway (although it's hard to say since Kerry's already of courting age and Sandra is several years younger at this point), but this managed to speed things up. I've always found weeping with someone to be the act of forging a spiritual bond. Too bad this was what caused it, though.

Larner · 23 September 2009 · Chapter 1: Paper Recollections (Sandra, Elanor) - KatM Ch. 14

Yes, a beautiful look at the end of a long life and how her young granddaughter understands what has been told to her of that long-ago time. A sad tale, yet uplifting as well, with hints of an apparent falling-out with Pippin. I still find that odd, as Pippin gave the copy of the Red Book to the King on which allegedly our whole appreciation of the history of Arda is based. He will support the broader education of all outside the Shire but not inside it? You are going to have to fill in that particular corner, preferably somewhat sooner. (And do give a look at my story for the challenge--heh!)

Author's reply

Sandra was born after Pippin left the Shire, so Pippin's not even a factor in this Falling-Out; rather, it exists between his son Faramir and the populus of hobbits at large ("representative of the King" was simply referring to Faramir's title as Thain). I try to leave the Travellers' efforts to support education outside of my stories, as things have clearly taken a reversal since their time (I still owe Sam a couple of apology fics for some of the less charitable things Kira has thought about him in her ignorance). Anyway, hope that clears that up for you, and I'm glad you enjoyed the tale!
