Well, I don't like Glilavan, I hope that he understands that his Father will be between Legolas and the traitors, and he is risking his Father life. Excellent chapter and can't wait for more. Thank you

Author's reply

You've got the right instincts about Glilavan then. He is going to be the source of quite a bit of trouble from here on out. He doesn't understand enough, that is certain. Gald you are enjoying, and thanks so much for the reviews!

perelleth · 11 January 2010 · Chapter 4: Lies

Plot keeps tightening. I am not sure I like the manner in which Glilavan managed the incident, there is something that always makes me grimace about him, so good job there. His keeping bad companies is going to be a pain... for Dolgailon, sooner or later. Speaking of the troop Commander, I really liked how Dolgailon made his point come across. And I think that Anastor and his sidekick are far more trouble anyone deserves!

Author's reply

Glilavan is definitely going to be the cause of a lot of pain from here on out. You are right there. Glad you liked Dolgailon's discussion. I had fun writing that. It will come back to bite him though. Anastor is about to be more trouble. He's the type my parents would have told not to come around anymore! Thanks so much for the reviews! I appreciate them so much!

daw the minstrel · 11 January 2010 · Chapter 4: Lies

The conversation between Tulus and Glilavan was interesting. Sounds like Tulus is pointing out the possible consequences of Glilavan doing something stupid. I can see why Legolas finds that a bit much to deal with. I never would have thought of Dolgailon as the one to go to, but he's a good choice, though he doesn't really need another burden added to the pile right now. Poor guy. And he's sharp enough to see that something's not right here. So now what? And speaking of doing something stupid, here we are with the kids and the practice swords. And if I were to give anyone in this chapter a smack, it would be Anastor. What a little weasel to involve Legolas. Though I suppose he was involved the last time they "practiced." Still, good for Legolas for speaking up. I wouldn't have expected him to say anything more than he did, but the stuff about how he can't have an officer think him untrustworthy is a good point. And thank Eru for Nana as an aid to telling Adar! Inspired (and traditional) choice for a son in trouble.

Author's reply

That conversation, and the one it inspired Dolgailon to have with them, will have a much bigger role in the next part. It is set up that needed to go here in order to be used later. I'm amused you wouldn't have thought to go to Dolgailon. Very true. An easier out for Legolas. And a somewhat legitimate person to seek help from, since his is now troop commander. But not really the best choice, is he? Now what? Exactly. Gonna have to wait for the next story for that. Sorry. You thought Anastor was bad in this chapter. Wait for the next one. He's going to really go right over the top there. Inspired (and traditional) choice for a son in trouble. I bet you know that from experience. :-) You write boys well for a very good reason! :-) Thanks so much for the reviews, daw! I really appreciate them!

CandissD · 11 January 2010 · Chapter 4: Lies

Great chapter! I can't wait to read more. I loved the part about Legolas' sketches

Author's reply

Thanks! I'm glad you are enjoying it. And I'm glad you like the part with the sketches. I like to think these elves have some creative outlets, even in a scary place like Mirkwood. :-) Thanks so much for the reviews! I appreciate them so much!

Gwynhyffar · 10 January 2010 · Chapter 2: Arts of persuasion

Legolas is really falling in with a bad crowd. He better shape up and in a hurry because I can't imagine Thranduil will be very indulgent if he catches him.

Author's reply

Yes he is. And naturally he's not going to shape up until he finds a good bit of trouble. You're right, Thranduil is not going to be indulgent under the best of circumstances about this--and these aren't the best of circumstance. Again, thanks so much for the reviews!

Gwynhyffar · 10 January 2010 · Chapter 1: Grief

I feel so bad for Galithil. What a large weight of guilt on the poor guy. At the end, seeing Galithil as the voice of restraint and reason and seeing Legolas as 'the bad one' was a little crazy! It makes sense, of course, but wow, what a change. Great reading! I'm glad you're back at this story.

Author's reply

It is crazy. It's fun to write Legolas being a little 'bad' and stubborn. He's not gonna like it so much though. Galithil is about as buried in guilt as you can get. Poor thing. He's got a long way to go. I'm glad you're enjoying and thanks so much for the reviews!

Sulwing of Mirkwood · 8 January 2010 · Chapter 3: Guilt

Haha! Dolgailon is great! And he *can* stand up to the king :)....if not exactly like his father did. :( I'm glad Glilavan is getting another chance. "And I encourage you to do the same, my lord." lol! The elflings are finally getting some answers. And, heaven forbid, a guard! That will put a crimp in their activities, good thing too. Poor Tulus, his confession must have been hard to make. For a moment there I was afraid Legolas wasn't going to forgive him. But he did, like poor Galithil. I'm afraid that there is going to be trouble in the next chapter, and Legolas is going to be in the middle of it.

Author's reply

Glilavan and Dolgailon have been friends for a very long time. Dolgailon has been defending him for a very long time. And he really wants him to turn out ok. Tulus too. That will be a pretty central part of the future plot, actually. And Legolas really loves Tulus. They are very good friends. That whole story was really difficult for him to hear. There is going to be trouble and Legolas is really in it deep, you are very right! Thanks so much for the reviews! I really appreciate them!

Sulwing of Mirkwood · 8 January 2010 · Chapter 2: Arts of persuasion

Legolas Greenleaf!!! Ai, the elfling had me tearing my hair out. Will he never learn to do as he is told? He and Galithil seem to have switched behaviors! I do think Thranduil made a good choice for his new troop commander, though. :) Oh, I *loved* when Thranduil dropped in on the rhetoric lesson! The elflings won that debate!

Author's reply

You'll be tearing a lot of hair out in the next few chapters, I'm afraid. :-) Dolgailon will make a great troop commander, but he will have some hard lessons and decisions too, poor thing. Glad you enjoyed their little debate. I think they surprised Thranduil! Thanks so much for the reviews!

perelleth@yahoo.com · 5 January 2010 · Chapter 3: Guilt

Is it a testament to your talent that in your world I care far more for the OCs than for the established ones? exception of Thranduil, of course? I like how you are managing the numb feeling that is surely left after such an overwhelming and unexpected tragedy. Dolgailon is drowning in duty, THrnaduil is trying to go step by step and galithil is so deeply changed he surely wonders if it was so easy on the first place then why on Arda he didn't do it without things going so far as for his parents to die? NOt that he is short of things for which to blame himself at this moment... I liked the idea that Lindomiel had the loom workshop for herslef to mounr Amoneth while Dogailon chose to surrounded himself with children when taking posession of his father's place. And had to laugh at the visual joke of Thrnaduil going out again and checking the number of doors to maek sure that that was actually his brother's office... oly it was no, no longer. Also how his smile faded was a good touch, subtle yet oh so telling. Uff, too hard for all of them to pick up the pieces and keep going. THankfully, Legolas is ready to pick up the naughty-boy routine right where Galithil dropped it. Else, everybody would be sooooooo bored! I'm enjoying this way too much!

Author's reply

that in your world I care far more for the OCs than for the established ones That is a good thing. I have so many darn OCs! ;-) Thanks! I have fun with them. Certainly easier to write them than Legolas. I'm glad everyone's emotions and various ways of coping are coming off as believable to you. That is hard with a cast this big to not have everyone reacting the same way and let it get formulaic. Legolas is going to learn he doesn't like so much being the naughty one very soon. But he still thinks he's right, so that makes it harder. Thanks so much for the review! I really appreciate them!

CandissD · 4 January 2010 · Chapter 3: Guilt

Fantasia · 4 January 2010 · Chapter 3: Guilt

This is getting better and better. I thought that Dolgailon knew that Glílavan was not to be trusted, but I guess that they had been friends for so long that he wanted to give him an opportunity, it is true that the King and his brother were a little unfair with them and if Tulus is repented, his son could be saved too, but I doubt it, don't know why. Still, poor Dolgailon, he will need a lot for help from Thranduil... Thranduil missing his brother was very sad, and when I think that he still doesn’t know that his mother is thinking to sail…it will be terrible for all of them. Legolas, he is such a good boy the guilt will eat him after behaving bad, but he is in a bad age, when bad influence is very powerful, I mean, it is so easy to behave bad than to be good. This new Galithil is amazing; he will be an incredible warrior and help to his brother, King and Legolas. Tulus's confession was very touching and Galithil’s reaction too. I can't wait for more updates and to read stories of adults Legolas and Galathil, it will be interesting to see them after the Quest.

Author's reply

I thought that Dolgailon knew that Glílavan was not to be trusted... Wait until next chapter and see what you think. :-) I'm glad you noted poor Thranduil's grief. You're right that this is going to be tough on him before the end. Legolas is going to get in deeper very soon, poor kid. and to read stories of adults Legolas and Galathil, it will be interesting to see them after the Quest. I've been looking over the adult Legolas and Galithil stories during my holiday and I agree, I am looking forward to them too! But as for post Quest stories...well, you are assuming Galithil makes it through to the Quest or to the Fourth Age, aren't you? (How mean was that!) ;-) Thanks so much for the reviews! I really appreciate them!

daw the minstrel · 3 January 2010 · Chapter 3: Guilt

Ooh, snap! Personal guards? That should put a crimp in the plans to spy on the warrior training. Of course, Legolas seems to feel he won some freedom too. Thranduil was clever to appoint a guard Legolas regards as a friend. That makes it less likely Legolas will deceive the guard or risk his hide. But, Thranduil, don't you believe for a second that delaying the guard's appearance is going to be okay! What's wrong with you? I like the way Thranduil's memory of replacing his own dead father gives him some insight into Dolgailon's actions. Aradunnon's personality (and relationship with his brother) was quite different than Dolgailon's more tempered style and relationship with his uncle. There will doubtless be tricky moments here too, and look! One comes right away with the appointment of Glilavan. I liked Dolgailon's comment that he was afraid of Langon himself. LOL. But I think Thranduil has a point about how much Galithil needs him. Of course, Dolgailon needs information too. Boo. No easy answer there. As there's no easy judgment to be rendered on Tulus. These subtle situations are good for the boys to think about. I liked the realistic little interactions between the boys: Legolas punching Galithil's arm and teasing him about swimming or calling Thranduil "my lord." I suspect that things might wrong on the "just fetching the cousins" front.

Author's reply

Ooh, snap! Personal guards? LOL! Yes, that was a nasty surprise for Legolas and Galithil. It must be really weird to be an elf and to associate with someone for thousands of years and then have to learn to work with someone else. It's hard enough at work for me when I hire new employees after a few years! Thranduil made a good choice with Dolgailon, but it will drive him crazy at times too. Especially since he really loves his brother's oldest son. I like situations with no easy answers. I enjoyed the more fun interactions with the boys too! I suspect that things might wrong on the "just fetching the cousins" front. I bet you are very right about that! ;-) Thanks so much for the reviews daw! I appreciate them so much!

Fantasia · 29 December 2009 · Chapter 2: Arts of persuasion

Hi Elliska, I'm glad that you are posting, I love your stories. So, we have now Legolas acting as Galithil and Galithil acting as Legolas, what a complication. For sure, Galithil has learned his lesson. I loved the Thranduil will support Galithil's love for Maidhien if necessary, just it will be a pain for both, with her family history. I really, really feel bad for Dolgailon, he is the one that will have an impacting life change, and I think that his marriage will suffer, because I don't think that his wife really understand the big change that happened when her father and mother in law passed away. Maybe I like him, but I don't think that she is very supporting. I liked your interpretation of Thingol’s jewel fiasco. Agree 100%. I really never liked him. Looking forward for more chapters and tahnk you for this one.

Author's reply

I am so sorry it took me so long to respond to this. This holidays really messed with my internet access. Yes, Legolas and Galithil have switched roles a bit, which is fun to write, though I doubt the results will be anything Legolas much enjoys. You are very right about your prediction of the pain that Maidhien's involvement in the King's family will cause, but she will end up being responsible for something very good too. :-) Dolgailon is really in a bad place right now, quite a bit more than he knows. The noose is slowly tightening around his neck, poor guy, And I'm so glad you liked the Silmaril arguments! Thank you so much for the review! I really appreciate them!

daw the minstrel · 28 December 2009 · Chapter 2: Arts of persuasion

I can see why Dolgailon is intimidated by the situation. It's not easy to imagine being in charge of people who are older and more experienced, especially if they've known you from childhood. And once again, Galithil shows how he's matured with his offer to help sort his father's office, despite how difficult that will be for him. Poor kid. "People died because of what we did." That's a tough thing to know. What a great lesson about Thingol. I love the argument you put in Legolas's mouth about how Thingol argued both ways and how that wasn't just. So where did that wisdom go when he was considering whether to watch the training and practice with the stolen swords? Sigh.

Author's reply

Yeah, that would be tough, I think. On the one hand, everyone would expect the King's family to have leadership roles, and Dolgailon has certainly put his time in rising through the ranks. But, it is uncomfortable managing people who once managed you. There's just no way around that. Galithil is punishing himself to some extent, by taking on tasks that are difficult. He does have difficult knowledge to live with. I'm glad you liked the lesson. I liked it, but hesitated to leave it in. In the end, I decided it stayed, because it does show Thranduil's motivation to give Legolas and Galithil the duty they end up with and it also shows the kids are smart. As you say, Thranduil will soon be asking them where those smarts went only a few minutes later. Thanks so much for the review Daw! I really appreciate them!

perelleth · 28 December 2009 · Chapter 2: Arts of persuasion

It's amusing to see Galithil being the sensible one for once. Of course he paid a high price fro his newfound maturity, but still one would expect that Legolas might learn from proxy? :-) No, of course not. I liked the paralell when Legolas is afraid that galithil will tell on them and his ocusin just telling him that he should know he's not supposed to do so... an entertaining echo from earlier adnvertures. Still I felt most for Dolgailon... and that part when the younger brother offers help... darn, no wonder they are both elluding the task. I am still awiting for THrnaduil to snap. And I am so happy that you are posting so regularly! So is the whole story finished? Yay! I'm rubbing my hands in anticipation!

Author's reply

Yeah, imagine how shocked poor Legolas must be. You'd think he'd clue in that maybe he wasn't doing something smart if even Galithil won't do it. But we can't have it that easy, can we? ;-) I did amuse myself with the role reversal between the two of them, and you see it even more in the next part. Poor Dolgailon. He doesn't know how much he'll end up hating this new role, for reasons he can't even imagine yet. And you've got Thranduil right. So is the whole story finished? I've had this whole part edited since September, for the most part. I just haven't been able to find time to give the chapters a final proof read and get them posted. I figured Christmas Break would be my best opportunity, so I went for it! :-) Thanks so much for the reviews. I appreciate them so much!

CandissD · 28 December 2009 · Chapter 2: Arts of persuasion

Wonderful chapter! Legolas is going to get in trouble, I just know it. Please update soon! :)

Author's reply

Oh yes he is because he has only begun to dig his hole here! Thanks so much for the review!

perelleth · 27 December 2009 · Chapter 1: Grief

Uh-oh. seems to me the journey out of grief is gonna be a long one. Poor galithil's conversation with his uncle almost broke my heart... and I kind of loved how Legolas admitted that he now undesrtood his cousin's eagerness to be taught to wield weapons and defend the forest, and not just showing off. But what I liked most is how you managed to hide the grief among the adults, since this goes from the kids' pov. Except for the brief moment between LEgolas and his mother, and the underlying worry about the grandmother, we are not really aware of how Dolgailon is coping wit hte death of his father, or THrnaduil with that of his younger brohter.. which I find appropriate since Galithil and lEgolas would not really notice while the adults hid their grief. NIce touch. And sure Thrnaduil must be grinding his teeth just thinking how his brother's conversation with Galithil set in motion such an unfortunate set of disgraces. That part was really painful to read, seen from Galithil's misery while at the same time trying to stand in Thranduil's shoes... Well done! Also liked the idea of LIndomiel finishing Amoneth's piece of cloth. While surely the elves might get anything they needed from the forest, it is true as you say that they also kept trade with Esgaroth, and the fact that they would trade with cloth, among other things, is very believable. Good to have this back again!

Author's reply

Yeah, it will seem long to them, for certain. I'm really pleased by your comment about the kid's pov and understanding the adult's grief. That is indeed what I was going for. It plays a role in why Legolas is not understanding his father's reactions right now and why he is more willing to make the decisions he does. I also want Legolas to learn a little about what people need when they are grieving. There will be plenty of grieving to come in Mirkwood, and frankly I think there is some level of grief (in the sense of despair) throughout the life of the Fellowship, that Legolas plays a good role in bolstering their hope. So he is beginning to learn about that here. Not that the lesson is going to be a pleasant one... Thanks so much for the review! I really appreciate them!

Sulwing of Mirkwood · 23 December 2009 · Chapter 1: Grief

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) I'm happy. If you haven't guessed. I've been waiting so long for the next Journey to come out and it's finally here! I love this Christmas gift. \ Oh wow. I really hope Legolas's daernana won't sail West, but I think it might happen anyway...of course, now you have me worrying about his nana too. Is she going to fade because of all this or are you going to kill her or are you going to have her live throughout the Third Age? ........... I suppose you'll say that would be telling. Oh well, can't say I didn't try. It's interesting to see how Legolas is starting to think a little differently than his father about the forest and the elves in the south. I never felt like yelling at Legolas or Galithil about anything, so they must have matured a little bit. I certainly wanted to knock Anastor and Noruil's heads together though! Merry Christmas!

Author's reply

Sorry to be so long in replying. I was a little isolated from the internet over the holiday. I'm glad to give you a present and I hope you continue to enjoy it! Hehe, yeah, I'll leave you to worry over who will survive the Third Age because I am mean. ;-) Legolas is definitely thinking about a lot of things and he is thinking differently. It's not going to be good for him because of it, but in many ways, he is right. Galithil is in the same boat. Belated Merry Christmas to you too and an early Happy New Year! And thanks so much for the review!

horsemadcoco · 22 December 2009 · Chapter 1: Grief

Once again, absolutely breathtaking! I simply cannot comprehend how you write so well. You always display the characters' emotions perfectly and come up with the best storylines. It will be interesting to follow this story. But so sad as well, continuing from Journeys in Mirkwood! This story is one of the best I've read about Thranduil, Legolas and their family, and it's certainly the most thought-through. Well done, and continue writing to the end!

Author's reply

*Blushes* Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy it and I hope you continue to do so. This story is going to be a bit sad/angsty, naturally, given what has happened. Thanks so much for the review! I really appreciate them so much!

CandissD · 21 December 2009 · Chapter 1: Grief

Wonderful chapter! I just love this story. Please update when you can :)

Author's reply

Thank you! I hope you continue to enjoy. I expect now that I've got another part started, the updates will be pretty regular. (Assuming I didn't just jinx myself by saying that). ;-) Thanks so much for the review! I really appreciate them!

daw the minstrel · 21 December 2009 · Chapter 1: Grief

Oh yay yay yay! I've been waiting for this and yet I hate to read it because then it will be done. But I can't resist. :-) I was interested in the idea that the Wood-elves traded special cloth designs for food and other items. I always have trouble understanding how they could have lived at all. Tolkien was terribly vague on their economy. But cloth done with artful craft is a good idea. Dolgailon, Dolgailon, Dolgailon. How long have you been married now? Even Galithil sees the error of your ways! He was as well as he could be after disobeying his father to do something he knew was stupid that resulted in his father's death, cousin's injury, and grave injury to one of his best adult friends who was only trying to protect him. That is to say, he was not well at all. That's a nice line. Galithil is pretty accurate in reading his own state here, for all the good it does him. Poor thing. He does a good job in explaining himself to Thranduil. He sounds very grown up. And then he's the one who says not to spy on the warriors training! Go, Galithil! And Legolas too is maturing. You can see it in his willingness to question his father's decisions sometimes rather than automatically taking Thranduil's side. I thought the memory of the trees taking hope from the king's presence was very touching. Scary scene with the knife. I imagine the guards were not amused. Anastor leaves me with my mouth hanging open. "Stupid." "Fool." The boy has neither fear nore respect. I want to slap him around myself. Also he's ignorant as a pig about ME history. He needs a copy of the Silm.

Author's reply

:-) Yeah, Dolgailon, for all his experience as a warrior, can be really stupid at times and this was one of them. Poor guy. He's going to have some difficult surprises in this story. For once, Galithil had it right all the way around. He is really trying now. Having been clobbered in the last story, he should be trying! Legolas is surprising himself. And he will be the one to learn something in this story. And Anastor. What can I say. He is fun to write because he can do almost anything. I love the 'ignorant as a pig' description! That is hilarious. He really is, which is not too surprising, given his parents. I can't see Dannenion being interested in anything that didn't affect him directly, so he certainly wouldn't burden his children with any education. Anastor and his cousin are going to start learning from here on out though. And they may not like everything they learn. Reality bites. Tolkien gave us sooo little on Mirkwood, except that they apparently did trade (barrels did have apples in them in the Hobbit, as you well know)... In my little world, Lindomiel and Dieneryn weave, so surely they must have some nice cloth to trade with the Men. But yeah, by the time of the Hobbit, if the dwarves and hobbit can't find enough to eat to get across Mirkwood, how did all those elves survive?! It requires us to have a good imagination, I guess. :-) That's good! Thanks so much for the review, Daw!
