It was a politic choice, certainly; but not the one his father needed, obviously. Poor Elrond--mind fixed on the needs of the child upstairs....

Yes, Elladan would likely have ordered the evening differently if he had thought Elrond would insist upon coming downstairs!

Definitely a distraction to regret. How terrible!

Author's reply

Ah, guests do not always show up at opportune times...

I've read this story at another site (and reviewed it there) so won't give anything away, just that I'm glad you're posting it here as well. :D

What a great opening chapter! This is a promising and unusual scenario for keeping Estel out of the way of the dwarves from the often given reason of his being on a hunting trip with his brothers. Your Elrond is an absolute treat; his love and devotion for Estel adorable. He is every bit the wise and kind lord that we expect him to be. I confess I've never imagined Gilraen to be jealous of Elrond so it will be interesting to see where you take this. I'm very much looking forward to more.

Author's reply

Well, a hunting trip would be more fun for the poor child... but whatever the means he must have been kept well away from the large crowd of strangers! As for Gilraen, I know I've taken an unusal tack with her. Still, I hope it will indeed prove interesting.

What an intriguing beginning! Poor little Estel, so sick, and Elrond, so worried! This is a very interesting idea of what could have been going on during that long ago visit by a wizard, 13 Dwarves and a hobbit. I loved the entwining of the wood-elves songs in with Elrond's worried thoughts-- an excellent device to show the contrast between what was seen by their guests and what was going on behind closed doors.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked my use of the song. Guests are often unaware of the undercurrents of tension in the home in which they stay; it is the mark of a good host to keep them in blissful ignorance. Of course, Elrond has other motives for secrecy, too...
