· Chapter 7: How the Rest of the Week Went
This was a lot of fun to read, and I find myself wanting to be there with the Elves and their mortal roommates, despite the fact that I don't do well with really cold and harsh environments for the most part. :)
I'd love to learn the penny whistle from Daeron, but I'm afraid that I'd be one of those who ended up walking back after the first mile of the run!
I'm officially intrigued about the "watcher" in the woods! I admit that my first thought was "Maia!" and then "Radagast!" I'm looking forward to seeing if my guess is correct or not.
Yeah, if I were young and single, I might just consider attempting something like this, especially if Glorfindel and company were in my class! *grin*
Thanks for this lovely Christmas gift, Fiondil!

Well, I know there would have to be a very good reason for the Elves to reveal their true identities, but I can't help but trying to come up with some. It's Glorfindel and the twins we are talking about, after all – these three staying out of trouble has to be wishful thinking ;)
How very elvish to run so far without sweating! That will probably give the others a bit more to wonder about *shakes head*
Deirdre's worry who would take over this class made me laugh. Poor woman, though - it had to be a bit depressing for her. First she's spending so much time preparing for this class, and then they are taking over and disregard her careful worked out schedule completely!
And I see they have found yet another thing to teach their mortal classmates *grin* But I am pleased Daeron seems to have found a way to help Zach.
That sounds as if another elf is around there in the park. And he feels familiar to Glorfindel? Hm ... Maglor maybe? Thranduil? This story is getting more and more intriguing!
Author's reply
Hi, Kitty. Well as to how or when the Elves reveal themselves to the Mortals, we will see before the story ends. As for Deirdre and the other teachers, I am sure they will adjust to the situation eventually. *grin* And as to who might be the 'watcher', we will have to wait and see. Thanks for reviewing. I am glad you are still enjoying this story.

Glorfindel going to the Olympics? Now that would be an idea – if it wouldn't bring so much unwanted attention to him! But even though it may make them a bit suspicious, I can understand how frustrating it has to be to always hide their abilities and identities. It must have been a relief to not hold back too much. Sometimes I am wondering where this story is going and if they will in the end reveal their true identities ...
And I felt so sorry for Glorfindel – hopefully one day he will be reunited with Finrod. The same goes for Mithrellas and her mortal husband and children.
Hm ... to wake up some trees so that they can give them a warning about the weather is an interesting idea. Could be a real help for the Elves.
Love that song about Glorfi *lol* And it seems that's another class the Elves will excel in. Of course, considering that they could ride their horses without bridle and saddle, it's not surprising that they were so good with the reindeer. It was nice to see how respectful they handled the animals!
Do I need to mention that I like the idea to use Icelandic names? They're so familiar to me :) But Gandalf – now that was fun! Our dear Olórin would surely feel honoured that he is not entirely forgotten ;)
Author's reply
Hi, Kitty. As the story progresses we will see to what extent the Elves reveal themselves to the Mortals around them and under what circumstances. Obviously, it would not be for trivial reasons for taking such a risk; it would have to be for a very good and powerful reason.
Glad you loved the song about Glorfi and the use of Icelandic names for the reindeer. I am not sure just *how* honored Olorin would feel that he is not entirely forgotten considering the circumstances, but no doubt he would find it amusing (or one would hope). *grin*

Another fun chapter! I loved the Glorfindel version of "Rudolph", LOL!
And the Elves manage to stand out again. I'm wondering how long before at least a few of their fellow students start to resent their "perfection".

Heh! It might be interesting to see a class our heroes (and heroines) _don't_ quietly - or not so quietly - take over. ;-)
I wonder what Olórin might have to say about _this_ Gandalf ;-) And Tuoni's comment was to die for!! :-D

Glorfindel ate Rudolph!?
Nooo!
I don't think they would have had time to domesticate them any way.
The idea would make a good bunny though!

Author's reply
Hi Lynda. Well, that bunny is NOT in my hutch let me tell you. *LOL*
What a brilliant and hilarious concept - Elves pretending to be mortals pretending to be elves! Not to mention my favourite Elf driving a mini-van and packing groceries *sigh* Wish someone like Glorfi would pack my groceries!
Sounds as though the Twins and Merry and Pippin studied at the mischief-making academy at some point. And verse 31 eh? In one of my stories it was verse 71 of a song called 'Nineteen Nights in Nobottle' which caused all the trouble, but that was a hobbity song. I think I can imagine what it may have been about. ;-)
I shall now go and read the rest.
Author's reply
Hi, Baggins Babe. I am so glad you found this story and you are enjoying it. I thought it was a hilarious premise myself and have been having a lot of fun with it as later chapters will show. "The Elf and the Fruit Vendor" made its first appearance in Book One of Elf, Interrupted where we learn that verse 31 is Varda's favorite verse. *grin* At any rate, thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

· Chapter 5: Elf Legends and Legendary Elves
That chapter was so much fun! Really enjoyed the legends lesson. To try and mesh all these legends into only one version is pretty much impossible, so it's a good idea to try and explain the others away. We'll see how much success they will have with that *grin* And I see the other students are taking their clue and taking over the class even without the Elves having to do anything :D
Loved Daeron's theory how the Elves were included into the legend of Santa Claus. And the problem of size was a great point as well!
At that rate, I am really looking forward to the costme part. I can't imagine them accepting anything ridiculous, not after this class! (And anyway, I can imagine particularly Glorfindel rather in a balrog costume than in the sort of Elf costume I fear the teachers (or worse, the people in that committee) have come up with!)
Ha, the moment I saw the word 'archery' I had an idea what was to come, and I was right! Of course the former warriors had to chose that, and of course they could not resist to show off! Including Glorfindel, who beforehand was saying something about low-key and not drawing attention *eg* In fact, he was the worst in that regard!
Seems a good idea to have Glorfindel and the twins helping with the archery lessons. They have more experience than all the others put together (even if Phil doesn't know), and it would help them financially as well.
Author's reply
Hi Kitty. Glad you enjoyed this chapter so much. I had a time researching the different Santa legends and trying to incorporate them into the discussion and then bring in the idea of how Elves got into the story.
As for the costumes.... that is a chapter all of its own and will be coming up soon enough. And what Glorfindel's reaction to them will be... well, we will have to wait and see. *evil grin*
I think Glorfindel just could not resist showing off, especially with the twins complaining that they are so out of practice. *LOL* Helping to teach the archery class though will be good for them all, especially financially.

· Chapter 5: Elf Legends and Legendary Elves
Hahahahaha!
They've been taking over the school with very little effort...and now Glorfindel and the Twins are being paid to do it! Will Mithrellas, Nimrodel, and Daeron get the same chance?
My brother had a similar experience at Boy Scout Camp one summer. They saw how he was leading the other scouts at some activities, so they made him a CIT, and he worked at the firing range, the zoo, and the bike shed.
I have a major problem with the archery scene in this chapter. It's a very safe sport, but ONLY if it's supervised properly and all the rules are followed by everyone. It helps to remember, always, what archery is actually for: it's practice killing. If a student wants to shoot at a greater distance, the safe thing to do would be to move a target away from the row of archers, or to reserve the end of the session for distance shooting, (which is fun even if you're not aiming for a target,) NOT to let the more ambitious students move that far back from the row. It doesn't matter if the showoffs are at the end of the row-- half of sixteen is not zero. As it happened, it worked just fine because Glorfindel and the Twins are awesome that way, but if some young idiot with more confidence than skill tried to follow their example, the result could easily have been tragic. As an instructor, Phil should not have let the elves do what they did, especially without first seeing them shoot at the normal distance. If I were in charge of that school and I saw what happened that day on the archery range, I'd fire him on the spot. Whether or not the elves should be blamed here depends on whether any of them have ever taught archery to large groups of beginners, but Phil should know better.
Arrow collection and score checking is done by everyone at the same time, or at least with nobody shooting at the same time, for the same reason.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not using the word "fire" in reference to shooting arrows. It's simply not an applicable word, and I wince every time I read or hear it.
I am, for the most part, enjoying this story despite the errors. I hope someone in Valinor is watching this through a Palantir, and laughing his head off. Teaching mortals to be elves, indeed.
Author's reply
Hi Parmalokwen. Thanks for your input on archery. I realize that how I describe it probably as real archers gritting their teeth, but as this is pure fantasy, I hope they and you will ignore any errors on my part. I suspect that Phil was so skeptical that anyone could shoot from the distance the Elves wanted to shoot from that he allowed it, perhaps suspecting that the arrows would not go very far and that would be the end of it. At any rate, I am glad you are enjoying the story. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.
Author Reply: I thought you should know that, taking in account some of your suggestions, I have revised this chapter slightly where the archery is concerned. You still may not like it, but hopefully it is a little better and truer to reality. Thanks again for your input. I take such inpute from 'experts' seriously as I like to keep my facts stratight, as it were. Readers such as yourself who offer constructive criticism help make my stories and my writing better.

Why wouldn’t they be accepted? They’re Elves, and in my opinion, far more qualified to receive scholarships. There isn’t one mortal who could come close to their abilities no matter what they were doing. As far as Glorfindel working in a grocery store goes, I wish my local store had someone like him. What a wonderful surprise that would be. (Sighs)
Their first meal should be most interesting. Each one, except the twins, is bringing a room mate. I can’t wait to see how that plays out.
It’s a good thing your Elves aren’t as tall as Tolkien’s which I think was between 8’ and 9’. I don’t think the poor humans could handle it well at all, but it sure would be fun to see the looks on their faces.
Author's reply
As far as I know, Tolkien's elves were not 8 or 9 feet. They were usually between 6.5 to 7 feet and there are plenty of mortals just as tall (and taller!).
At any rate, you're the first to mention Glorfindel bagging groceries. *grin* I thought the image of him in a white shirt and black bow tie saying 'Paper or plastic?' just too hysterical not to put it in. Glad you liked it.

Trust the twins to play the games on others that Dwarves once played on them! (See Bodkin's work and my "The Benefits of Scholarship" in Moment in Time). It's so fun to play such games! Now, if anyone in the class has read LOTR they just MIGHT have a clue.... Heh!

Yes, indeed, Larner. However, in this AU LOTR has never been published, so the Mortals will remain clueless. *grin*

And those phrases she wanted them to use...*shudder*...it's just as well he did take over.
I LOL'd when I read the girls envying his hair!

Hi Dreamflower. Glorfindel is a natural leader, so he can't help but to take over when the situation requires him to do so. I'm glad you disapprove of the phrases Deirdre came up with, they are rather silly, aren't they? And I bet every female in the classroom was envying Glorfindel's hair. *LOL*

Somehow I think the Staff at Northen Lights are going to wonder what hit them, besides having a much better course of study by the time Glorfindel and Co., are done with them, can't wait for the survival course!
See, I was right, Glorfindel does need to keep a leash on the Twins, even he admits it!
Liked Glorfindels suggestion for greetings though, being addressed as a 'fair Mortal', while accurate, is a bit 'precious' for me!
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
Well, Glorfindel is just entering into the game that the Elf Academy has set up, so to speak, and he knows that this is the type of address people would expect or assume from an Elf. I doubt he ever addressed anyone as 'fair Mortal'. That would have caused great resentment among said Mortals. *grin*
We will see just how the Elves end up taking over the curriculum at the Academy eventually. Stay tuned!

“Naughty doesn’t even come close, my dear,” Nimrodel said with a knowing smile. “Appalling is more like it.” Oh yes, appalling - that was why she was singing along herself!
Hm ... a course in Elf legends, too? Now you have me wondering what that is supposed to be meaning – these fairy tales about diminutive beings with wings or the tales about the *true* Elves from so long ago or something entirely different!
“If those costumes come attached with wings,” Elrohir whispered darkly, sure that only his fellow Elves would hear him, “I’m out of here.” Now *that* I can believe! The idea of Glorfindel in a winged costume ... *ROTFLMAO*
Really, before even the first hour was over, I felt decidedly sorry for Deirdre. The poor woman! It's not easy to have *real* Elves in your class, even if she doesn't know that she has. First they are giving her language lessons and then they're taking over the whole class!
The twins are quite naughty! I'd expected them to be a bit more mature by then – they're certainly old enough to behave! *shakes head* Though I can admittedly see how tempting it has to be to teach the mortals Elven curses and sell them off as greetings.
Author's reply
We will see in the next chapter what Elf Legends entails and how the real Elves react to them.
As for the Elf Guide costumes... we will see what they are like soon enough and how the Elves react to them as well. *evil grin*
And the twins I think are just taking advantage of the situation, enjoying tweaking the Mortals who are little more than children in their eyes.

· Chapter 3: Getting Acquainted
Hm ... what the elves said about losing their jobs left me thinking that it sounds just like the sort of interference I am used to from the Valar in EI. Now you have me wondering if it was really coincidence or if there's some higher power in the game, too.
So Shane is already suspicious? Now you have me wondering – do the Tolkien books exist in this AU? What if one of their new classmates has read them and draws the right conclusions? *grin*
Now these courses sound to be fun. Elf Etiquette? That makes me think about manners at the High King's court. Pettingill's course should be quite easy for the Elves, considering how much times particularly Glorfindel and the twins must have spent outside at all times of year. Not to mention the Helcaraxë ...
Um ... how was that about 'not drawing attention' to the Elves? Getting drunk and dancing on the table isn't falling in that category, I'd say. And singing 'The Elf and the Fruit Vendor' even less. Oh well, at least in that setting we can be reasonably sure that there's no hope danger that Varda is going to turn up to sing verse thirty-one *grin*
Author's reply
In this AU Tolkien's books do not exist.
As for the Elves losing their jobs.... whether just coincidence or something more will be revealed in time.
The courses that are described in this story are based on actual courses at the Finnish Elf Academy mentioned in the newspaper articles. I tried to get more details as to what they entailed but did not have much luck, so much (though not all) of what I describe for these courses are from my own imagination.
As for not drawing attention to themselves... we will see just how successful they are in that regard. Some, I think, will be more successful than others. *grin*

That's definitely not the story to dawdle with my reviews – already three behind ... :(
Some of their mortal names are quite appropriate, you know. Misty Grey and Darren Harper, indeed! And of course, I ended up giggling about the reactions they got from Cassie and Matt, though I would probably not have been any better. They have to be the most beautiful students to ever grace that Academy.
Now I can symphatise with Patrice Austin – guessing where names come from is something I like to do, too. Though I do it more in private ;)
