Elrohir will be delighted to see what a great leader and protector his "small brother" will be in the future!
Author's reply
Oh, but I am certain that he will! Elrohir and Elladan both did their own parts in seeing to it this one of their father's fosterlings was well prepared for his destiny.

Heh! Not as elegant as Elrond I guess! But Estel will get to know Bilbo's writing fairly well in later years. He managed to decipher the poem for the hall of Fire after all. Or perhaps the reason that he didn't add anything except a green stone was that he couldn't read it well enough to dare to comment!
Author's reply
That he did! Getting the book of tales at this time in his life helped prepare him for Bilbo's writing later when the Hobbit became a resident of Rivendell, I suppose. And you have me giggling! Heh!

Thoughtful of Bilbo! I like that he's such an uncle figure to Estel.
Author's reply
I suspect that Bilbo was intrigued by what he saw of young Estel, and wanted to give him some pleasure.

Oh, it's THE book!!!!!! I love it! It's so very sweet of Bilbo to send it for Estel. :-) Hopefully there will be more told of it...or at least, hopefully there will be more told of "Or Perchance"? Please?
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
Yes, it's THE book. It may well appear again in "Or Perchance," although its final disposition is written in "A Treasure Returned." I suspect that Bilbo tended to have a soft spot in his heart for what he saw as intelligent children.

What a sweet child... I wonder what they came up with to send as a thank you!
Author's reply
Yes, indeed a sweet child. As for how he tried to show his appreciation--am not certain of that as yet. Thanks, Cairistiona.

It's fun to be 'counting' along with Estel. And a book from the Shire, what a special gift! His introduction to hobbits and their ways is very gentle and heartwarming.
Author's reply
I've written about the book in "A Treasure Returned" and "Or Perchance, when the Last Little Star." So, I thought I'd write of its first gifting to Estel. Yes, a lovely introduction to Shire life!

I admit with a little shame that it took me three tries on my fingers to come up 16. Smart kid, Estel! :)
(To add to the shame, I've been studying physics for the past 6 hours. Yet still basic math eludes me... :P But thanks for the refresher!)
Author's reply
I remember this being posed to us in a class on logic and rhetoric when I was in college. Powers of multiples can be overwhelming at times.

Sorry I'm so behind with these, but at last I've caught up.I enjoyed them all, especially the White Tree and the birth of the kittens.I also loved the chess board.I recall reading somewhere there would not be enough grain in the world if you could double it on each square!
Author's reply
I remember--two to the sixty-third power is a VERY large number! Heh! So glad you're enjoying these!

You know, I seem to remember doing a similar math problem...now if I could only recall what the sequence was called. It's not the Fibonacci series, although that's just as much trouble, if not worse!
Kaylee Arafinwiel

I remember it from a logic class in college. And I can't remember the sequence, either. I found it fascinating to contemplate the numbers involved.

Well, I'm sure Aragorn will do as well as Bambi there! *grin* Great Prince of the Forest...or Lost Prince of Isildur's line, as may be. He'll make a good Chieftain, and no doubt an even better King!

I so agree! The stag has ever been a sign of lordship, and with reason.

I love Bilbo...he's so scholarly. *grin* I'm sure he fit right in at Imladris, both now and when he returned for his 'retirement'!

Meliangiloreth, eh? Such a long name for a wonderful elleth. I wonder how she did in lessons, learning to write such a name! Lovely snippet, and I can just see Estel gathering eggs and wolfing down cakes. Silly boy, I want to cuddle him though!
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
Meliangiloreth was first introduced in "Of Courtship Rituals and Wizards" in my Moments in Time collection, and she's continued to appear from time to time. And I remember my brothers and my stepson all wolfing down sweet things when they could. Heh! I, too, would love to cuddle the child!

Ew...eleven yrch? I would rather not have them as...guests either. Glad they didn't have to, Larner! Ick, just the thought of it makes me want to be sick, as is probably the point.

Poor kitten! But alas, such things happen. I'm so glad that Estel found the ducklings to take his mind off of the death. And there's TEN of them! Wow!
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
Our ducks' clutches used to hatch on Mothers Day (U.S., that is), and they usually had between ten and sixteen ducklings. Had to include that memory from my own childhood. And unfortunately young animals often don't live to maturity, I fear. Thanks so, Kaylee.

Ick, what a horrible discussion topic! Ulairi...the Ringwraiths, I expect? I don't like the word, it even tastes nasty, saying it, if you know what I mean, Larner...*shudder* Poor Elrond, having to explain them. Wonderfully done, just not a subject I (or Elrond, I'm sure) want to think about, LOL!
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
Ulairi is the Sindarin name for the Nazgul, and I'm not certain why I chose that word instead, although I'd think Estel might find it in a book in Elrond's library. No, not a pleasant topic, but one the youth must learn about eventually.

· Chapter 8: Eight
Aw, Estel has more family! Have you written about his uncle and aunt anywhere else? I didn't know he knew his human family...very intriguing! I hope Estel had a good time on his birthday :-)
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
I've indicated that during his time in Imladris a few of the Dunedain, and most especially his mother's brother and his wife, knew where he was and would visit once in a while so they could bear witness when it was time for him to return that this was indeed Arathorn's sun and the rightful one to be named Heir of Isildur. Hints are given in The King's Commission, The Acceptable Sacrifice (which will soon be replaced with the edited version), and I believe The Ties of Family as well as to a lesser extent in Fostering. I also have an AU story in the works that deals with this, based on one of my original concepts. I may finish it and post it one day.

Where the White Tree might be found? Good question! just wait until you're almost King, Estel...you'll find the White Tree yourself, a living one, on Mount Mindolluin.

· Chapter 5: Five
Eek! Well, clearly harps aren't for Ranger Chieftains! Heh. He's a good singer, we know...so wind instruments are out...how about percussion, boys like to bang on things. But then he wouldn't be moving silently. Oh, I don't know, lol!
I'm sure there's something out there for Aragorn.
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
It can take some time to become even tuneful on an instrument. Apparently Estel simply isn't a natural at the harp, although he may come to be reasonably able to play a tune. But drums could indeed be his forte as far as instruments go.

You had me humming "We Three Kings" with this one...LOL! How seasonal :-D
I loved the comparisons! You know, we're never told what the other two kings' names are, just that they got Cardolan and Rhudaur. What would you call them?
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
I'd not thought of names for the other sons of Earendur, although I've named some of the later descendants of them. And I, too, was singing the same song as I wrote this! Heh!

· Chapter 2: Two
Ah, Larner...the Ring of Barahir, and Vilya...both very important rings! And one will come to Estel himself in time, when he takes his true name; while the other provides sanctuary for Imladris...including, in time, another young Ringbearer, guided by Aragorn!
I love the comparison between Papa and Ada!
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
I know I have some memories of being two, and suspect young Aragorn had a few, too. I'd like to think he sensed safety and love in his father's interactions with him; and I can't imagine he'd be totally unaware that Elrond wore a ring, even if he didn't particularly see it. And I must imagine he felt the love of both fathers to be equally warm.

· Chapter 1: One
O Larner, this is such an amazing series already! I've read up to 16, so I'm going to get started on reviewing now, LOL! I've liked each one very much so far...I particularly like Estel's thoughts on Bilbo here, though I'm afraid my thought..."if he only knew!" isn't all that original. *grin* Of course, it goes both ways, if Estel happens to meet Bilbo face to face! He of course wouldn't see the young Dunadan. He wouldn't know who he was seeing either!
(Heh, sorry for all the exclamations, but really, this gets that reaction out of me :-) )
Kaylee Arafinwiel
Author's reply
I'm glad you're enjoying these. I have an encounter between Bilbo and Estel in "Fostering," in case you're ever interested in seeing what the two of them think of one another. I suspect that Bilbo had a soft spot in his heart for intelligent children. Thanks for the feedback.
