Very good! Those four letters tell a lot about the writers.
I especially liked Sam's letter and this sentence:
Please Marigold when next you see her will you tell Rosie Cotton hello for me?
I bet he would have loved to say much more to Rosie, but Marigold will know that, too.
Too bad, that the letters didn't make it to the Shire!
Author's reply
Yes it is. The muse did not tell me what happened to them. Perhaps it will, one of these days...

And so Denethor's edict indirectly helped Menelcar to become a bard!
Had Denethor known that, he would not have been amused ;-)
Author's reply
*snicker* Probably not. LOL!

Very good!
Almost like a mantra. And endless, because the first and the last line are identical!
Author's reply
"Almost like a mantra."
Perhaps because he's trying to convince himself? I had not thought about it, but maybe it's one of those circular arguments that we often have with ourselves when we are trying to make ourselves believe something we know is probably not right...
Thank you for that insightful comment! I hadn't thought of it that way before...

"And," added Merry, “My punishment for him is much milder than the one I imposed on myself to replace the original spyglass!”
This is so typical of Merry!
A nice little story! I enjoyed reading it.
And I, too, think that the name Theodas is very fitting for Merry's grandson.
Author's reply
Indeed, Merry would impose a punishment on himself if he felt badly enough!
And I'm glad you like the name Theodas!

I just loved these letters, especially Sam's. How sad only one of the four ever got delivered.
Author's reply
Perhaps one day I will find out what happened to the rest of them! But my muse wouldn't tell me that this time.

I greatly enjoyed these letters. Every one of them rings true.

What a fascinating backstory you've given us for your Menelcar. Well done!
Author's reply
Thanks! I'd hinted in the past that his master had been exiled from Minas Tirith by Denethor, so I decided to flesh it out a little.

Poor Merry to have his spy glass broken. The punishment was indeed fitting.
Author's reply
Well, I couldn't let it be broken beyond repair, so at least it will get fixed! And it will teach little Theo not to handle other people's things without permission hopefully!

Merry is just the sort of grandfather we would expect him to be.
"Theodas" is a great name for that family!

'Gaffer Merry' is very wise. This is a nice story, and I enjoyed it.

I think Merry would have been quite wise by the time he became a gaffer! And I am so glad you liked it!

Oh yes, clapping games! We played many of them at school, but I can't remember the rhymes.
Pippin's logic is - as always - very funny, a little confusing, but nevertheless true ;-)
Author's reply
The reason his logic sometimes is funny and confusing is that he sometimes blurts out his conclusions without explaining any of the steps in between, LOL!

Then there is:- One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, Six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told, eight's a wish and nine's a kiss, ten is a bird you must not miss! Though that is for Magpies!

I haven't played a clapping game since I went to camp in the 1960's. Thank you for bringing that memory back. :)
Author's reply
For me it was grade school in that same decade. I think I can still remember how to clap for "three, six, nine, the goose drank wine, the monkey chewed tobacco on the street-car line", though I doubt I'm still coordinated enough to keep it going, LOL! But that one did not seem terribly hobbity!

and from below as well, from little round windows in the hill on which the Tower stood -- I'd never thought much about the name 'Undertowers.' Obviously you gave it a great deal of thought.
Brief as this is, it's one of the best Middle-earth 'creation-stories,' ranking with Pearl Took's "Stories of Our People" and lipstick's "Captain Tinkerbell" (an oldie from ff.net).

What a dear little scene. Bilbo truly was a very generous and good-hearted hobbit.
Author's reply
Yes, he was. The more I think about Bilbo, the more I believe that his generosity and good-heartedness were why the Ring was never able to get a real hold on him. Even after sixty years, he was just feeling old and weary. He hadn't faded. And he was still able to give it up with Gandalf's help.
And all because he cared about others.

This was just lovely. I see now why Gandalf loves Hobbits.
Sadly it is true to life that those who havve the least are the most ikely to share.

Yes-- I think compassion is drawn to compassion. Gandalf spent much time with Nienna and Lorien, and I think he was absolutely drawn to hobbits because they are a compassionate people for the most part.

· Chapter 19: Listening for Returning Feet
What a lovely glimpse of Bilbo. I suppose I had never really thought of how he must have felt when almost everyone else set off to go to Minas Tirith; I'm really glad that you did.
Author's reply
When you realize: Elrond and Arwen leave, the twins are already gone, and it is likely that the majority of the household would have gone as well, leaving only a small staff to see to Rivendell till they got back! How lonely Bilbo must have been!
