.. and he would find out just how tasty a Baggins was A perfect description of Gollum and his feelings! One danger of "the Precious" is that it twists perception (right word?). In fact, Gollum WAS ALONE since he had found the Ring. And going Outside could have been his last chance to alter that.

Author's reply

Yes, Gollum was a rather nasty creature. And you have exactly put your finger on what I was getting at. Gollum had made himself believe that the Ring was company. But in truth, he had been more and more isolated ever since he acquired it.

Andrea · 7 March 2011 · Chapter 6: A Light Lunch

Ah well, it wasn't his fault that the Elven cooks thought he was picking up a picnic for all five of them. ROTFL!!! Absolutely wonderful! Thank you very much!

Author's reply

Weeellll...It wasn't his fault, was it? LOL! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Lindelea · 7 March 2011 · Chapter 6: A Light Lunch

LOL! Very hobbity! It stands to reason that a hobbit could eat enough for five. Probably works out to be just a snack for a growing tween. Your list of foodstuffs is making me hungry... had better stir up some breakfast. Yum! Thanks for a lovely start to the day.

Author's reply

You are quite right! I hope you enjoyed your breakfast! And you are most welcome! *grin*

Virtuella · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 6: A Light Lunch

I hope he'll find someone to share with, or he'll be very sick!

Author's reply

I have a feeling Pip has more or less a cast iron stomach! And he *would* have shared with Merry, if Merry hadn't preferred the company of maps... On the other hand, when Merry finds out he *didn't* share...LOL!

Virtuella · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 5: One Is the Loneliest Number

Oh, very well done!

Author's reply

Thank you!

eiluj · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 6: A Light Lunch

If the various elves ever compared notes and figured Pip ate it all himself.... Nah, they'd never believe it. Of course, he was a growing tween: his body did need a major pig-out every so often. The entire bottle of perry, though, for a single hobbit.... Somebody must have realized he'd been up to something. Chicken-and-mushroom pasties: I'll have to try those the next time I do pasties.

Author's reply

They might believe it, after having the hobbits as guests all those weeks. But yeah, Pip's still a tween, and he rarely pigs out alone. But once in while a lad needs a treat! And the perry, of course was meant for five. I doubt Pip will finish it all. While my Pip enjoys his ale and such, he's rather abstemious when alone, due to an unfortunate incident in his early tweens. Chicken and mushrooms is a great combination!

6336 · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

Actually, when you think about it, you now have Nine Walkers, four Halflings equal two men, right?! Lynda

Author's reply

You have a point. I can see Merry trying to explain that logic when they catch up! LOL!

6336 · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 6: A Light Lunch

Let's hope Pippen does not suffer too much from his 'light' lunch! Greedy Hobbit! Lynda

Author's reply

I think, in general, that hobbits had cast-iron stomachs! I think it would take an awful lot to give one a bellyache! Although in this case, it just might be...

shirebound · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 6: A Light Lunch

it wasn't his fault that the Elven cooks thought he was picking up a picnic for all five of them. *giggles* This is delightful!

Author's reply

Weeeellll, it wasn't...but of course, he made no effort at all to disillusion them, LOL! Though when Merry finds out what he missed, he might be a tad miffed...

Baggins Babe · 6 March 2011 · Chapter 1: Charmed!

Certainly none of us can resist the hobbits! They are so charming and adorable, and I love Merry asking Galadriel for a dance - that's our gallant Meriadoc. I can just see them all dancing and and I love that Gandalf is joining in - he must have done a lot of dancing with hobbits.

Author's reply

I'm quite sure he did! I figure he was dancing along whenever he visited the Shire!

harrowcat · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 3: Believe It or Not!

He is finding it as hard to accept as Butterbur did that Strider was now the King! Great stuff Dreamflower.

Author's reply

*nods* And for much the same reason. It's hard to believe that someone you actually know has ended up in a position of importance and authority.

harrowcat · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

I love this Dreamflower. I just hope that whoever is on watch doesn't greet them with an arrow.

Author's reply

I hope not, either. I figure they will make sure that it's not an archer! Merry is definitely clever enough to figure *that* out, LOL!

Andrea · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 4: Merry Waits...

Very well done! Merry had a hard time when all his hobbit friends were gone and he did not even know if they still lived! But this time also made him wiser.

Author's reply

Yes, he was a much wiser young hobbit by the time it all ended, and far stronger than he had been before.

shirebound · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 4: Merry Waits...

This is beautiful, and feels very 'Tolkien-y' to me. Shall I have all my bitter days to mourn? Return alone of all my kin? I'm not so brave. Poor Merry, arriving in Cormallen to find the other three hobbits so badly injured. Those days of waiting must have been unbearable.

Author's reply

I know! It's such an awful time for him, he must really have had to try and draw upon all of his courage to get through it!

Virtuella · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 4: Merry Waits...

That's a very interesting format, and the key words are well chosen!

Author's reply

Sestinas are not as easy as rhymes, but they are a challenge to work with!

Virtuella · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

Yupp, I can just see that happening!

Author's reply

So could I! *grin*

Linda Hoyland · 5 March 2011 · Chapter 4: Merry Waits...

These are all most enjoyable. I especially liked Merry ad Pippin determined to join the quest.

Author's reply

Thank you! I had been toying with the Merry-Pippin AU for a while...

Andrea · 4 March 2011 · Chapter 3: Believe It or Not!

Oh yes, I can understand Hamson! My "little" brother turned 30 last year, finished his studies and has accepted a very good job offer just yesterday. How the time flies! It's unbelievable :-)

Author's reply

*nods* It really is hard to realize that a "little" brother or sister has grown up, especially if you do not see them frequently!

Andrea · 4 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

Did it occur to you, when you disregarded Gandalf's advice to trust to friendship, that your refusal to let them go might also endanger Frodo? Exactly! Well spoken, Bilbo! I liked this very much and I admire Merry's cleverness.

Author's reply

It's an AU I've toyed with for a long time-- from reading that chapter, I get the impression it was a very close thing with Elrond's decision. He could easily have decided to go with his own feelings on the matter instead of Gandalf's...

cookiefleck · 4 March 2011 · Chapter 3: Believe It or Not!

Makes me wonder if Hamson will pop a vein when he later finds out Sam is the Mayor! ;o)

Author's reply

LOL! Perhaps by the time that happens, he will finally be used to the idea that "little Sam" is all grown up. *grin* But I wouldn't count on it!

Antane · 3 March 2011 · Chapter 3: Believe It or Not!

Believe it!! Indeed it was to a beloved brother that Frodo left his home, a most worthy heir, for Sam loved the place almost as much as Frodo did. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Yes, he did. Of course, it's very hard for an older sibling to see a much younger one as anything but a child!

Antane · 3 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

Love it! How right they are to defy Elrond. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Of course defiance was the theme here! I am very glad that in canon, Elrond was wise enough to listen to Gandalf!

shirebound · 3 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

They'll throw the numbers off! *grins* What a small price to pay for such determined companions. I just love this. The supplies Bilbo allowed us to pilfer from him are about to run out LOL! Dear Bilbo.

Author's reply

*grin* I think Bilbo felt that they should have been allowed to go, so he'd certainly help them out if he could, LOL! And that Brandybuck and Took are indeed quite determined!

eiluj · 3 March 2011 · Chapter 2: Eleven Walkers

Interesting idea (and one I've never seen before). It could be a whole series. But I have to ask -- who are the others (both elves, I guess) who went in place of Merry and Pippin? And they didn't mention Boromir: is he still in the Fellowship? Did he ever reach Rivendell? How AU is this?

Author's reply

I don't know if I will continue it. But it could be fun, perhaps in several vignettes. Boromir's there. I don't think in this AU that Merry and Pip know him well enough to guess his reaction. As for the other Elves, my notion is that it would either have been Elladan and Elrohir, or Glorfindal and one other of Elrond's people. In my AUs, I usually change as little as possible initially -- usually only one or two small things. Then I see how far the ripples spread.

Virtuella · 3 March 2011 · Chapter 1: Charmed!

Aw, I'd like to take part in that dance, too!

Author's reply

Well, I've danced that dance (called the Tangle Bransle in our world) but never with hobbits! I think it would be even more fun with hobbits!
