“And said, “I was not afraid.” Tears clouded Arathorn’s eyes, “And I have been waiting for you, my son.” He opened his arms wide and Aragorn, with a lightness of spirit that he had not felt in many years, ran into the waiting arms of his father.” Awww…that is what Arathorn said, isn’t it? Something along the lines of “Don’t be afraid for I will be with you.”? Well, not that specifically. Nice epilogue! It works well! Wow, this story was good! But now I am done! Fortunately I am not going to run out of stories any time soon! Maybe I should write my reunions in death…

Fimbrethil · 28 December 2025 · Chapter 20: Unexpected Visitors

“Gandalf!” Erthain exclaimed suddenly feeling so much younger than his actual age of ninety. He stood and walked to embrace the old wizard, “So good it is to see you again. What news from the outside world? Have you seen Aragorn of late? Is he well?” The last question was said in rather a more plaintive way that he would have liked. “ 90? nice. And what does 3002 have to do with anything? Is this when Gilraen decides to go back to Fornost? I thought she would have decided sooner. “We need more rangers patrolling the Shire.” Erithain looked at him, “It will be done, but can I ask why.” The wizard replied, “I hope there is no reason at all, but we cannot be too careful.” Ah, it is just a year or two after the Ring has passed to Frodo, is it not? How much does Gandalf suspect? I see; I thought Gilraen would return to Fornost soon. “She had left later that month and had never returned.” Ah, and I see now she is remembering, and the current year is 3002. Boromir is 24. Yes, that is where my brain went. Erithain has grandchildren now!? Hs sister only has to wait some 20 years… “A shadow crossed Erithain’s face as he thought of his son who had been slain in an Orc attack a year past.” Oh! I guess this brings home the fact that none of the Dunedain are safe! “Erithain looked at his sister and saw that old fire in her eyes that always appeared when she spoke of Aragorn. He was her light within; her reason for being. Especially today; it was his nephew’s birthday. His sister’s life had ever been one of waiting; of hoping; of looking to the future, but never for herself. Erithain hoped he had provided a good life for his sister since her return from Imladris, some fifty years ago. His children and then his grandchildren loved their “Auntie”. Had it truly been that long he wondered. He realized it had.” Awww, I don’t suppose Aragorn remembers his own birthday? PS: I noticed “realized” is often typed “realised”—are you British? “Then new images formed in her mind. Her son leading a force amid evil wearing the sable and silver carrying the reforged sword. Him standing on what looked to be the prow of a stone ship the winged crown upon his brow. Him hugging Arwen, smiling as his face glowed with happiness. Gilraen’s heart was bursting with joy.” hoho! “You are gifted with this vision, to gladden your heart, to know that you have not sacrificed in vain. Seek our son and give him hope that now it is truly beginning. He will succeed if he stays true to his path.” Awwwww. I suppose when I finish reading this would be a good tine to right my version of that reunion.

Fimbrethil · 28 December 2025 · Chapter 19: A New Destiny...

“He could not contain his joy that his nephew was back among his people but Erithain’s heart swelled with pity as well. Aragorn, as he could now begin to name him once again in his mind, looked so lost. He could only imagine what emotions were swirling in that heart. He knew that Aragorn truly loved Imladris, his Adar, his brothers, Elladan and Elrohir, his naneth, who curiously still remained at the Last Homely House. But now he had to go forth from Rivendell to fulfill this new destiny, so different from anything he had ever imagined for himself. Erithain looked into his nephew’s confused grey eyes. Aragorn smiled weakly at his uncle, “Who am I, Uncle? Am I Estel?” he stated. Within his heart that name sat comfortably nestled within all that he knew. “Am I Aragorn?” The name still sounded strange to his ears as if it were another person was being discussed and yet his heart did silently thrill at the sound at the same time.” Hmmm…I think he is both, actually. “And remember, I have known and been friends with Elladan and Elrohir since before you were born.” Aragorn’s eyes widen a little at this then he realized he indeed knew the truth of that statement and laughed a little, “So very true, I don’t know where my head is today!” True! I also almost forgot this so thank you for the reminder. Awww Aragorn cut his braids before he was ever teased! He is so self sacrificing! “What did it cost you to undo your plaits?" “Grey eyes shadowed with pain, Aragorn replied, "Practically everything." He admitted to his uncle, "But I am not an Elf. I could no longer wear them." Vulnerable young eyes looked at Erithain, "I must be what I am, not what I may wish to be. If I am not, if I do not find some way to fulfill this destiny that has been handed to me, then all the sacrifices my mother made; and the life my father lost defending me will have gone for naught." So true. “Your heart remains the same, though. Elf or man it is your heart to which I will gladly entrust my life and pledge my loyalty. I have already for these many years." Erithain touched his hand to his forehead and heart, bowing his head. When he looked up his nephew's grey eyes were rimmed with tears and they held such a look of gratitude, "Thank you," Aragorn whispered. "I will always be at your side," Erithain stated in a clear, strong voice. His hands on both the young man's shoulder, "to advise or to warn. Upon that you can trust." Awwwww…he won’t be right at hand when Aragorn goes South though. “He stopped at almost at the exact spot where, as a child not quite three, he had sobbed inconsolably when he discovered that his beloved uncle would not be going with them. He looked at Erithain with a questioning look on his face, "Did something happen here? I get the oddest feeling." Erithain just looked at him, "Do you?" Hmmmm interesting. The memory of the little boy crying inconsolably had been burned into Erithain's soul but that Aragorn should somehow remember as well had been inconceivable until his nephew had just said it. Aragorn weakly nodded his head and grey eyes looked to his uncle for answers. "It was here when you were not quite three, and cried and cried and cried when you found out that I wasn't going with you and your mother to Rivendell. We sat in right there and I hugged you and talked to you until you stopped crying and seemed to accept what had to be." Aragorn looked at his uncle sheepishly, “I did? I don’t know if I specifically remember that but I feel in my heart something did happen here.” hehheh. Ivorwen! Amazing! “Erithain has told us many stories of your exploits.” Aragorn looked at Erithain. Erithain shrugged, “Guilty. Mother wanted to hear about you.” Suddenly and completely without warning Aragorn did not feel so alone. He left everything he knew and everyone he loved in Imladris only to find a new family here in Fornost. His uncle, his grandmother, the people of the Dunedain settlement. He felt overwhelmed and embraced; he felt loved.” Awww. …who is us? Also Erithain’s wife? Note: Regarding your Sindarin, I thought Daernaneth and Daeradar was Grandmother and Grandfather; but maybe that is Quenya?

Fimbrethil · 28 December 2025 · Chapter 18: A Story to Tell...

I like to imagine he at some point went to where his father was buried. Maybe where he died. “One, above all, he was most anxious to behold in full knowledge of the bond that held them. Erithain, friend and uncle, awaited him in Fornost. There had always been a special bond between the boy and the quiet man who lead his people, but it was not until now did Aragorn understand why the bond was so strong. He greatly admired the Man of strong character and quiet manner. Seeing his friend again and calling him “uncle” was the thought that held together the pieces of his fracted and homesick heart. His destiny began its uncertain journey in Fornost and there waiting was a friend.” Indeed. aw. Well, he knows now. Also nice that the other Rangers also “admire him greatly” already. I guess that partly explains how he can leave them and live in the South for some 22 years. The other reason being they have already had a Steward 18 years. “Erithain thought of his friend’s words. “My lord” A title he never wanted. Even after eighteen years of being regent it still did not sound right to his ear. He had learned to bear it over the years, but he yearned for the days when Erkenthal would tease him and call him “Kid” and “little brother.” Those days however were long past; ended abruptly by events nearly twenty years ago that Erithain silently commemorated in his heart this day and all week. Events that saw Erithain’s life ripped to shreds and placed him as regent to his people. Erithain closed his eyes in remembrance of Arathorn, his Chieftain and his friend.” Alas. Ooh! 18 years exactly! “Aragorn looked at his mother. Such a change had come over her since it was revealed to Aragorn his destiny and parentage. She looked alive, more alive than he had ever known her to look. Gone was the haunted look that had always hid within her visage, replaced now by a spark of life that was in truth a joy to see. This was coupled with a fervency that almost took Aragorn aback, so strange it was to behold in his normally reticent and subdued mother.” Nice, I am glad she has that. In the Appendix she just skips from keeping it secret to worrying about Aragorn. She does go home though :) Gandalf! It has been an age! I was wondering if he would show up! Perfect timing as always ;) Did my Adar send you out here to keep me company, Gandalf?”, Aragorn inquired. “Would it bother you if he did?” The Maia inquired watching the younger man’s face. “No,” came the quiet answer, “It would comfort me to know that he cares.” Gandalf smiled as he said, “Well in that case, yes, he did send me. Although he told me not to tell you, lest you should think he was interfering.” hmmm. “Gandalf puffed once more before answering, “My friend, you show great wisdom, greater than you realize, by even posing the question. I have great hope for you. I could answer the question for you with any number of reassurances or cautions. And none of these answers would have any relevance. What I think does not matter. What your Naneth thinks does not matter. What matters is what you believe. It is your heart will be tested, your resilience to be examined. You must look inside your heart and find the truth within. There you will feel pain, the pain of separation, the pain of uncertainty, the pain of loss. If you are succeed you must find a way through that pain which will lead you toward your destiny. It will not be an easy route, but find it you must.” Gandalf’s voice stern up until now softened with his next words, “And find it you will, of that I am certain.” Ah, Gandalf is right. Aragorn does show much wisdom. “The word hit Erithain and set forth a storm of emotion raging through him. That one word changed his future forever. He smiled as he ran forth bouncing the gate back with such force that it rebounded back into place and he enveloped his nephew in a giant bear hug. “Aragorn! I’ve so waited and so longed for this day!” yay! A clearing of a throat distracted Erithain and for the first time he noticed that Aragorn had not arrived alone, “Gandalf! When did you get here?” A smile crinkled the old wizard’s eyes, “I arrived with Aragorn, standing right next to him.” Erithain’s earnest grey eyes grew wide, “Forgive me, Gandalf! I only had eyes for my nephew!” “And that is perfectly permissible, my dear boy! But it is also why we should take this conversation inside.” Gandalf finished pointedly. The import of Gandalf’s words dawned upon Erithain as he gestured towards the door, “Yes, of course.” After allowing Aragorn and Erithain to enter, Gandalf touched Erkenthal’s arm to stay him. “Let us give them a small time alone. Matters can keep long enough for that.” Erkenthal smiled and nodded his agreement.” Ah yes. “Aragorn’s words stopped Erithain short. He had in passing heard to Aragorn refer to Gilraen as “Naneth” and not “mother”, but it had never entered his mind until this moment how Elven his nephew had become. He looked at him. At 20 he was tall and sinewy and his plaited dark hair fell far past his shoulders in the Elven style. He held himself with a self-confidence and assurance and with a trace of arrogance that if not for the rounded ears would mark him as an Elf. He was also puzzled by his nephew’s statement about his mother. Gilraen had always had a fire about her. It was her fire that she was most known and feared for. He could only assume that the years had changed her. The thought saddened him. “I cannot speak to the former, but I am glad that she is well. And how are you?” I read a story where he earns his Ranger status with others, I guess it was not by you? Anyway, he does have to start living by Dunedain standards “Aragorn looked at him, eyes bright with hope and intelligence, curiosity sitting right behind, and Erithain realized in that moment that although he could be at a glance mistaken for an Elf anybody who truly looked into Aragorn’s grey eyes would see that he was indeed Arathorn’s son.” Nice. And I think “well” is rather condensing what he is feeling. Same for his mother. “And Erithain smiled back, and the pain of loss that had bound his heart for eighteen years, ever since he had held his weeping two-year nephew on the path just outside this very door and said goodbye, finally loosed itself allowing the bond between uncle and nephew to become whole again.” Awwww…and I rather think his sister knew him best. But I suppose she was never with him on patrols. “Erithain smiled thoughtfully when he heard that. While Aragorn had called his mother “Naneth” he had not called Arathorn “Adar.” For reasons inexplicable, this cheered Erithain greatly. “Your father was a great man and a good man. Those distinctions are important. Many are destined for greatness, but this does not mean they are always good. Your father was a great warrior, but he also had a good heart. Good enough to take an angry young boy who tried to kill him under his wing and show him how to be a man.” Aragorn looked at his uncle quizzically, Erithain paused at the puzzled expression on his beloved nephew’s face and smiled, “Pull up a chair, Aragorn. I have a story to tell.” Right ho. Time to turn back these very pages. I am glad both Arathorn and Aragorn may be called this. .

Fimbrethil · 28 December 2025 · Chapter 17: Reckonings of the heart

So he lived there 18 years and only handled it once, but Boromir was there two months and also only touched it once. He certainly will do well! I guess Aragorn has never been to Lorien as Estel, and the Twins (and possibly Elrond) kept him secret from Arwen, for some reason. Maybe they had a vision of their future meeting or something? I also forgot to say I liked that E&E were there for Aragorn to talk to after he learned who he was. I wonder if she talked to Elrond or her brothers before Aragorn? Ah, I guess not. Oh a nameless desire? What happened to being cautious? “Tinuviel!” He heard a voice call only to realize in dismay that the voice was his own.” Well, at least he was immediately dismayed. Did he try to cover his embarrassment with his prowess at his titles? I also think I know why he could go by Beren later in the South. “Aragorn paused, the restored title that had filled him with such pride seemingly of little worth when compared to the beauty and dignity of such a lovely personage as this.” Ah. Glad he figured that out, even if it is wrong. “At the word “Lothlorien” Aragorn looked into Arwen’s eyes and saw the starlight within them. It was then that knew her for Elfkind, known too late, for within those seconds he knew he loved her.” Well, live on in Hope. “Formality has its proper time and place. When you’ve not seen your daughter for some twenty years is not one of them.” indeed. When both are known to love each other. So does she know of Arathorn’s and Gilraen’s marriage? Elrond doesn’t know what it is? And he doesn’t have a vision? How strange. “Elladan and Elrohir exchanged looks, “It has happened,” the elder twin said. “We have found the one.” At first Arwen looked quizzically at he older brother, then a dawning comprehension grew in her star-filled eyes. “The one, you say.” Elrohir nodded, “His name is Estel. Well truly his name is Aragorn. Adar named him Estel when he came to live with us. You will meet him at the feast.” Arwen looked at her brother and saw the light of affection for the young man in his eyes. Arwen was about to tell her brothers that she had already met Estel, but something caused her to hold her tongue. “He must be special to keep you from the South.” Ah hmmm. “Words broke into his thoughts, “Aragorn! I would like to present Arwen, your foster-sister!” Elrond said in a slightly pointed voice. Aragorn turned an abashed look upon his father, “I am sorry, Adar!” Aragorn tried to look upon Arwen with nothing more than polite interest. Arwen responded with a polite interest of her own, but against her own instincts her eyes lingered upon his longer than she knew they should.” Oh oh, so Elrond does know something! “A small flare of fear lit in Elrond’s heart as he looked upon the two souls that were among those he loved most in the world and then dismissed it from his mind. It could never be, so therefore it was not worthy of further consideration. At least he tried to, he found himself looking upon the two whenever they were together and at times the same small fear flared briefly and then died away. He filed away such thoughts, he would not allow anything to dim his happiness this night. His family was together and all was right with the world.” Indeed. Think of your parents, even. “Aragorn almost squirmed in his seat, but he checked himself just in time. Instead he straightened his shoulders and looked into his mother’s eyes. “I have found the one.” As he spoke Gilraen saw joy light in his eyes. “The one?” Gilraen began, then comprehension dawned. “Indeed,” she continued caution and curiosity weighing in equal measure. “And who might the one be?” As Aragorn spoke the name, Gilraen paled. “You aim high, ion nin! But it must not be. The path you are destined to travel is long and there is not space for two on the journey.” It tore at Gilraen’s heart to see the light in Aragorn’s eyes fade to shades of anger and disbelief.” Now she knows. But after the journey… “Aragorn rose from his chair, his clear grey eyes filled with silent reckoning. He hugged his father and departed. Elrond stared after him and it struck him that his Estel was taking his leave of him as silently as when he had arrived. Elrond thought back to the silent toddler that he first beheld in Gilraen’s begrimed and battle-besmirched arms. He thought his heart would break then beholding the little soul. It had not, until this moment when Aragorn, tall and strong, and no less tormented walked out the door of his study to begin the shaping his own destiny in the hope of someday claiming that which was necessary to his soul.” hmmmmm

Fimbrethil · 28 December 2025 · Chapter 16: A Father's Love

2951! Ooh, does this story include him in the South as Thorongil? This specific chapter is he performs so well on a mission Elrond tells him who he is when he comes back, is that not so? Erithain!—Théoden as he was meant to be! Or I could see Thengel in him, if Thengel rangered in his younger days. I just realized: no sooner than they leave the burden of Estel’s heritage, Elrond and Gilraen have the burden of knowing he is in love with Arwen and vice versa. That might burden Gilraen, and if not, he will be out more and away from home. Oh boy, it has been five months since Estel left, and he comes back a man. I like that. “Elmiran saw the intensity on his lord’s face and knew immediately what conversation was about to happen. He bowed his head in acknowledgement, saddened eyes cast down. Elrond thought, You are right my friend, Imladris will be a sadder place without my youngest.” Perceptive on both counts. And do either of them know Arwen is coming home? “He walked over to two deeply engraved doors behind the large table that served as his desk and felt the delicate design of a tree with seven stars encircling beneath his fingertips before his reached inside his tunic to withdraw an key, darkened with several hundred years age, on a blue velvet ribbon. He inserted the key into the lock and felt well-oiled hinges slip into place. He opened the door and reached inside past a wooden oblong box lined with silk to a small cube. He withdrew his hand and carefully opened the box. Inside, protected from the ravages of time, was a ring. Two snakes coiled around an emerald it had been in Estel’s family since before even Elrond had been born and now it would belong to Estel in token of his lineage and responsibility. Elrond set the ring box down and reached again into the cabinet sunk into the wall and pulled out the Sceptre of Annunminas. Younger than the ring, it held no less grandeur, being the symbol of Kingship of the Numenoreans since before the Downfall. This Estel would receive only if he succeed in the task he was born to and not before. Elrond replaced it back in the cabinet and locked it afterwards safely tucking the key inside his tunic.” Oh boy, if he were anybody else save maybe Aragorn, Éomer, Faramir or Imrahil he probably would have taken those things for himself or some such thing. Celeborn wouldn’t either, I think. When I first read the paragraph I didn’t remember how old the ring was, but now I do. Older than Elrond, indeed. It was his grandmother’s uncle who gave it unto Men. “A salve to Elrond’s heart Estel had instinctively used the Westron word for “father” and not the Sindarin word “Adar.” I suppose so. And Wow, I have never read the exact conversation in which Aragorn learns who he is. This is amazing! “from Finrod Felagund, brother to Galadriel, in reward for saving his life” so his grandmother’s father’s cousin, not her uncle. Now I am trying to remember if he gets the Ring of Barahir now in the books. He certainly doesn’t wear it. (Or maybe he does until Elrond tells him he shouldn’t go around introducing himself like he did to Arwen, lol.) So does he ever see to Gilgilath? I am glad his brothers told him what they did.

Celebrian is Lasgalen’s cousin! Now that is an interesting idea! I suppose that means one of her parents and Celeborn are siblings? It’s also interesting that she was killed going West to Imladris, and Celebrian was killed going East from Imladris. And you have them at about the same time, don’t you? What if their paths crossed? Oh, it is not only that, she has already been wounded and decided to sail. And she is lost trying to help the mother of the Twins. I bet they focused their orc killings not only in the mountains, but near Mirkwood, for a time. Possibly as self imposed penance. I rather think your Thranduil is somewhat like he is in the films. Fierce. Cool, Estel killed the two orcs, but what happens if Legolas doesn’t arrive outside? Elladan! They go to Mirkwood to seek Thranduil? Little do they know where he is. Now they do. He would tear up half of Middle Earth. And if Elrond (and Estel) wasn’t around his sons would tear up the other half. And now he is breaking with Celebren. I am begining to think this is the difficultest and most tragic family in M.E. Which is saying much, because there is also Elrond, Galadriel, Isildur, etc. Pretty much everyone is tragic actually, including Hurin and Turin. “We owe you a debt we may never fully be able to repay.” Well, Legolas helping the quest, whether he was sent or not, and then helping later in Ithilien etc. certainly covers most of it. The meeting of Celebren and Estel, and Thranduil and the SoE. Thranduil and Estel. “He saw a trace of nobility that reminded him of something, of what he could not place.” I see. Oh boy, the last paragraph. Did Thranduil figure out who Estel is?

“Estel had the feeling as he looked into the Ranger’s eyes that he was talking about more than the current tour of the Ettenmoors, but he could not fathom what that might be. It reminded him of the look of longing he would see on his mother’s face watching him when she thought he was not looking. Likewise, it gave him the most curious feeling, like he should know something, but he did not know what.“ Aha ah. Indeed. He is not that old though, because I thought he was younger than Gilraen. “Erithain had wanted to say “love” but he did not trust himself to use the word for fear that his emotions might break through his restraints and show much more than could be explained at this time.” That sentence is very thought—er emotion provoking! In a good way! “Maybe you can come to Rivendell and visit! Adar would welcome you, I’m sure.” Naneth would more, I am even more certain. :) “Erithain closed his eyes against the flare of pain in his heart and prayed to the Valar for the strength to turn down the invitation in a dignified fashion. “I would love that, but I-I’m afraid that will not be possible.” It broke his heart to see the refusal darken his nephew’s grey eyes with disappointment as he tried to shrug it off as if it really did not matter.” turn down the invitation in a dignified fashion—nice phrase, and unfortunately Erithain has to do this. Perhaps it will be more fortunate in the long run. :) Estel smiled and then sobered, “Do you think they will ever restore their kingdom?” His older brother looked at him somberly and then said, “I think they will. It is what they live for and I think it will happen someday.” Estel returned the look, “I hope so.” “I know so,” his brother replied and under his breath Estel heard him utter, “Or we are all lost.” This muttered statement frightened Estel and filled him with a sense of foreboding, but he did not mention it anymore to his Elven brother. He did not wish to worry him needlessly.” Oh boy. Estel, always have hope, know your destiny, take it. “There he saw abject misery, pain and a growing rage. Elrohir had seen that look in his brother’s eye only once before. When he had seen what the Orcs had done to Celebrian, their beloved mother” Oh boy. Is this when Legolas rescues Estel? “Do you remember nothing of the oath we took at the Coming of Age? You heard those very same words at Estel’s Coming of Age. ‘You were born to fight against evil, but never with evil in your heart.’ Can you honestly say evil had not entered your heart at that moment? Can you?” Ooh! Elrohir rescues his brother! Good! “Two strong yet smooth hands held him in place as the surprised voice said, “You speak Sindarin? And you wear the garb of an Elf and yet as I see by your ears you are not an Elf. Curious, my friend. Who are you?” Opening his eyes, Estel focused upon a gleam of blond, plaited hair falling over a shoulder and a concerned, slightly confused countenance surveying him. He struggled into a semi-sitting position and looked around with great effort. “I am called Estel, foster son to Lord Elrond of Rivendell.” “Foster-son you say? I did not know that Lord Elrond took in those were not Elves.” The elf said with a slightly dismissive tone.” Hoho Legolas! I am slightly surprised he doesn’t know that Elrond taught/raised at least some of the Heirs. “I am Legolas Thrandulion, youngest son to King Thranduil of Mirkwood. At your service,” he said, touching his heart in welcome. “As to why we are here, I can only answer for me. The Orcs wish to gain my Adar’s acquiescence. They think to do this by keeping me here.” Here he lowered his voice, “What they do not realize is that nothing is more important to my Adar than Mirkwood. He will not bow and I will be left here, unless I can make my own way out.” Oh boy. So Legolas is hostage. I also forgot your Thranduil and Legolas did not start in the best of terms—I suppose it may be thus when one has two older brothers. But it also reminds me strongly of Denethor/Faramir. “Elven pride, he mused, would appear to be universal.” True; I cannot think of any without a great deal except possibly Luthien and Arwen, which is interesting. Nimrodel and co. I guess, but similar reasons. “I do not wish to imply that my Adar does not care for me. That would be untrue. He loves me very much," Sometimes too much, Legolas thought though he quickly squelched that disloyal thought. His father had his reasons for his decisions, Legolas understood this. He continued out loud. "But he is driven by his desire to do what is right for his kingdom. Having any dealing with Orcs is something that he would never do.” Right. Slightly less Denethor, I think. Legolas sounding like both Elrond and his own father is interesting. Oh good, Elladan found Estel’s sword and bow—I was about to comment on there being missing. Oooh, Legolas’s whole family is about to look for him, and his usually calm brother is angry on his behalf.

2946–so 15. Oh! Is this when he is allowed to go on his first hunt with his brothers? “Mae Govannen, Adar.” Elrond inwardly sighed at the formal word for “father” that Estel had recently started using. He longed for the years past when Estel still called him Ada and a spice cake could solve any small problem that his little foster son might bring him. He had noticed of late that Estel was often quiet, as if he had something on his mind, something he did not share with Elrond.” Hmmm so Estel is trying to convince him? He is curious about his father. And it is Estel’s idea, hah! Wow the blessing scene was lovely. Yet he gets a sword and a dagger…and he is just 15! Oh well, he has grown quickly. Erithain! He is Aragorn’s uncle, isn’t he? Cool that he found him! Somehow I thought Erithain knew they would change his name. “Do you think me a coward for asking such a question?” When asking this question he looked at Erithain. He could not have explained why, because he had only just met the Man, but for some reason the chance that the Ranger should think him lacking in courage bothered Estel. He wanted the Man to think well of him.” Indeed, I guess he was always discerning of people—probably more than Faramir. “When the boy bent to pick up and clean his sword, Erithain looked hopefully at Elladan as if to say Do you think he somehow remembers me? Elladan smiled at the look of happiness and hope in his friend’s eyes. Elladan thought back to the time when little Aragorn had been taken away from his uncle and all that he knew. The two-year-old had been distraught, tears streaming down his face, when he discovered that his beloved uncle Erithain would not be making the journey to Imladris with him and his mother and father. He had been near inconsolable. That kind of bond never leaves the soul even if it has left the conscious memory. So in some portion of Estel’s soul the memory of love for his uncle lived. Of this Elladan was sure.” I remember that departure.

Fimbrethil · 21 December 2025 · Chapter 12: I will learn

So that is the elusive tale of Estel’s broken arm! I have seen it mentioned elsewhere, but didn’t know til now. Sounds like he learned much, though.

Fimbrethil · 18 November 2025 · Chapter 11: Hope is kindled

Just as good as when I read it solo! Only I have forgotten who gave Estel the horse, Arathorn or Erithain? How do you think a Sindarin preeminence will help generate storylines? *Thinks about it: With Legolas and family, I guess, not to mention the Lorien Elves*

Fimbrethil · 18 November 2025 · Chapter 10: Acceptance

So that is how he gets his name. Alas that Gilraen had to deal with it, but amazing that she did. “Erithain closed his eyes in reaction to the flare of pain that came with the newly minted title spoken sorrowfully by one who had ever teased him. He held up his hand to still the loved and respected man’s tongue. “Please, my friend,” he whispered fervently and quickly, lest more emotion than he cared to expose could escape the bounds of his sorrow, “I must be left alone.” He looked at the older lieutenant to his brother-in-law and dear friend.” Somehow I had totally forgot he hadn’t been told. Be strong Erithain, you can do this. This paragraph is so sad. I was about to say maybe Erithain should find I wife to comfort him, but then Galadriel showed up. Galadriel! It seems he will manage. And Erkenthal was waiting at the door the whole time! I wonder if he heard the conversation with Galadriel. I hope those two will long support each other. I am glad Erithain has a loyal friend. The Erithain part especially, was nicely written! Thank you!

Fimbrethil · 15 November 2025 · Chapter 9: A Gift from the Valar

“This will nearly kill Erithain, he loved Arathorn like a brother. But Arathorn chose well for the little boy’s regent. It was almost as if he knew this would happen.” Indeed. I hope Erithain doesn’t die literally, at least, not yet. Because for one he is regent:) “Elladan looked down at the sleeping child and thought, I did know this was going to happen, I just did not know when. He silently cursed prophesies showing them the truth but giving them no power to change what must be and anger flowed freely through him” Ah. “What say you to splitting our forces. Half to Rivendell with Gilraen and the little one and half as a guard of honour for Arathorn,” his voice catching at the last word. “It is a sound plan. I shall make the necessary arrangements.” Erkenthal bowed his head to his little Chieftain and went off to see the plans put into action.” I see. So that is what happens. They do know this just occurred because they didn’t have enough forces together, right? Oh, oh, that second group of orcs and what it caused! “Aragorn did lift his head at the mention of horses and looked down at the two horses and their riders taking a cool drink at the small watering spot” He would perk up at the mention of horses! And I am glad Elrond understands why Elladan helped Aragorn and that he could heal Elladan as well. “Elrond burst out with a joyous laugh that at first stunned Aragorn, he had not heard a laugh like that for what had been a very long time for a little boy of almost three. The next sound was one Gilraen never forgot as long as she lived, Aragorn laughing. After almost a week of unimaginable horror and grief to hear her silent child laughing was like a gift from the Valar. A small feeling inside her breast re-emerged which she at first did not recognise. It was hope.” Yay! They ought to have recognized the feeling of his name somehow! I only *hope* Erithain and the other Dúnedain can go forward knowing their *hope* is well in Imladris. Now they only have to endure the funeral/burial of Arathorn…do you know there is a drable, I think, somewhere on here Elladan and Elrohir buried Arathorn under a tree near where he died? I guess they could still do that here, but a little bit later after they have recovered somewhat and the Dunedain have said their farewells. Thank you for writing, MM!

Fimbrethil! Thank you for reading and writing so thoughtful reviews. I really do appreciate them. I guess the thinking when I was writing this was that it was only a small guard as not to attract too much attention? I'm not sure. I wrote most of this story a long time ago. Thanks for writing! (((hugs))) MM Author Reply: P.S. Erithain doesn't die. He is even around and riding with Halbarad and the Grey Company in the Battle of Pelennor Fields. He doesn't die there either. I guess I don't like killing off my longtime characters! I think in another review you suggested that Halbarad could be Erithain's son. I like the idea. I might rework some stories to include that! (((hugs))) MM

Fimbrethil · 15 November 2025 · Chapter 8: Never be afraid

“My friend, what do your Elf eyes see,” he whispered.” Lol! I mean, it is not funny, but the circumstances are the same. I suppose Erithain fathers Halbarad? “We must set a defensive formation and protect my wife and my son at all cost. Take the horses into the Trollshaw and hide them. We will retrieve them after the Orcs are either dispatched or fled. Move quickly now and give the orders around. I must see to my wife and son.” I would have thought they would want to keep the horses, to immediately flee if necessary. But I guess they don’t fight like the Rohirrim. But Éomund was more easily killed because he was pulled from his horse, I think. Oh right, Gilraen knows from the vision. I hope Aragorn remembers his father’s love for him somewhere. And that Gilraen will remember the happy times too, and be comforted. Oh dear! I had forgotten his death would make much more sense if he was distracted! “My love, I am sorry I was not able to protect you. I have failed.” Wow he sounds like somebody else. Faramir, I think. (or anybody else who is married, really). Éomund to, I guess, though I imagine he died on the field and his wife wasn’t there. I suppose if love is replaced with king/captain etc. it could be Boromir. Om further thoughts it could be Finduilas or Denethor. Or even Théoden, once he realizes what happens to Théodred. I need to stop thinking about this before it gets any sadder… “Arathorn looked gently into his son’s eyes, “My son, never be afraid of death, for I will be waiting for you on the other side.” After expending this last reserve of energy, Arathorn slipped from the world.” Wow. 208 years to go! In response to your A/N: my book timeline says Saruman discovered in 2939 that Sauron was searching the fields. Which means they could have been doing it earlier, but he didn’t know. I probably have realized Arathorn was killed like King Harold was in 1066, but I had forgotten. I also hadn’t thought that Tolkien wrote it that way on purpose, but maybe he did.

Fimbrethil · 7 November 2025 · Chapter 7: Torn Asunder

Oh, is Elladan worried about when Arathorn will die? If I was him I would be. Change is definitely coming, my friends, but I think you are ready for it. Well, maybe not actually, but you are all strong enough to withstand it as a group. Oh my, the news from Galadriel. Right, you have Arathorn be killed as he is taking his family to Imladris. “But he is only two! Far too young to be separated from his mother and father.” The awful truth hit Arathorn full force. He was losing his family. Gilraen would have leave Fornost with Aragorn. He shut his eyes to ward off the awful pain of reality. All due to the shadow. He felt anger the likes of which he had never known since his beloved Gwenrith was murdered shuttered through him. With the utmost of effort he calmed himself. He winced with inner pain as he said, “So be it.” A single tear fell from his eye.” I see, but then you are killed before you are separated long. I don’t know what happens for you after that. Oh! He is not going to try and kill orcs for revenge in this stage is he? Because that will definitely result in his death. “After consultation with Elladan and Elrohir, I ask that in the event that should anything happen to me and Aragorn not yet old enough to take the oath of Chieftain, that you stand in his stead until he should come of age.” Ah, so Erithain does stand in. I suppose Dirhael is still alive at the moment to govern his own lands.

Fimbrethil · 7 November 2025 · Chapter 6: A seed is sown

Ah Arathorn and Erithain are in Imladris. And I should have realized when I read the date that she would have something to say to him in September 2930! Erithain and how he is taking the Rangering. Why does your Arador not die in 2930? For the below, I guess. [Edit: Ah, in Fall 2931.] “Do you think that you are the only anxious father to ever pace these boards,” Arador chuckled wryly. “Only problem is I actually broke through a floorboard when you were born and your grandfather, Argonui made me replace it right then and there.” “He would not.” Arathorn thought back to his memories of his grandfather and none of them suggested that Argonui would do such a thing. “Yes, well. Your grandfather mellowed with age.” Arador laughed ruefully. “Actually it was not such a bad idea, it kept my mind occupied while I waited.” Lol. I am starting to think with all the details he didn’t make it up. Is Gilraen’s family here? And lo! Arathorn does give his life to protect his son! Skipping to 3933…when he goes to see Elrond; that trip is when he is killed, isn’t he. “the gray eyes lit up with delight and he said, “Horses!” Erithain looked from his nephew to his sister. Gilraen said with amusement evident, “Oh did I tell you? Our little Aragorn is speaking now! He can now say many things, but “Horses” and “No!” seem to be his favourite words. The young captain said, “My bright boy!” and hefted his nephew on his shoulders, “Let us go and see the horses!” Little Aragorn giggled; uncle and nephew then made their way to the stables with Gilraen looking after them chuckling with amusement.” heehee, indeed! Hmmmm did Aragorn did do the Chieftain ceremony when he left for the Wilds? Arathorn takes him to Fornost/Annuminas and tells him who he is. Nice, but as you say, he won’t remember for eighteen years, if at all. I hope they take the colt out soon though?

Fimbrethil · 7 November 2025 · Chapter 5: Owing the past; Owing the future

And I deleted my review by accident. But it was mostly: I guess Arathon’s mother is dead? On rereading the second time I realized WHY Dirhael was crying. Arathorn gave her a mirror his sister had used! Nice touch. Elrond and his sons are there! Elladan is the pendant bearer? I wonder if he has been since Aranath. And the wedding of the next Heir of Isildur will be with Elrond’s own daughter, the Lady Arwen, (and except for these four he won’t have any other family unless you count Faramir and the Fellowship.) The ceremony is rather serious. It is sad when you consider how long Arathorn will live, but I am sure he was somewhere in Gilraen’s heart the rest of her life, even if she concealed it. So Elessar and the Evenstar will wear the circlets at some point? If not after the RotK to Gondor (i.e. their wedding), then after the reestablishment of Arnor?

Author's reply

Fimbrethil! "Elladan is the pendant bearer? I wonder if he has been since Aranath." Possibly! "The ceremony is rather serious. It is sad when you consider how long Arathorn will live, but I am sure he was somewhere in Gilraen’s heart the rest of her life, even if she concealed it." It does remain with Gilraen, I have another story on here called "In the Midwinter." About Gilraen and Arathorn. http://www.storiesofarda.com/texteditor/chapterlist.asp?sid=7660 "So Elessar and the Evenstar will wear the circlets at some point? If not after the RotK to Gondor (i.e. their wedding), then after the reestablishment of Arnor?" That is a good idea and a story I haven't written.

Fimbrethil · 6 November 2025 · Chapter 4: Elvellon

“Her mother met her eyes and Gilraen had the oddest feeling that she was being introduced to two guardian angels.“ Indeed. Oh for their lives! …but I guess Aragorn kind of had to die for Aragorn’s life to turn out as it did. “The Thane’s daughter sat thinking that she would soon be a widow, because she was going to kill Arathorn the next time she saw him for causing her this embarrassment.” Don’t! That is worse than the real reason! :) I suppose if the Twins have managed to find joy so far in their life I won’t begrudge them… but the kind of joy they will experience starting in 6 years or so with Estel I would much rather have. His young sister to whom he was devoted died many years ago in an Orc attack. For a long while he mourned and shared his pain with no one, but slew Orc by the hundreds in a feverish vengence,” a look of pain crossed his blue eyes, a look so incongruous with this merry Elf that it struck Gilraen to the heart. “We have known such vengeance and have long accompanied him when he goes to hunt Orc.” Oh. and indeed. He sounds even more like Éomund. (sometimes Éomund has a sister who was killed by orc, also.) “ Gwenrith was her name and his face always lit up when speaking about her. At length she said, “Arathorn has spoken of her often. She always seemed like someone I would like to have known.” hmmmm…I don’t suppose you have a story of Arathorn and his sister, do you? I like the part after, where the Twins are slightly awed he talked about her, and their look to Ivorwen. “could tell a ripping good yarn when he felt so moved” what I phrase! I suppose he does have it in him. Elf friend! oh my? If only that bond worked for Arathorn and he used it timely…

Fimbrethil · 6 November 2025 · Chapter 2: A Gift Bestowed

Arathorn and Erithain talking heehee. “but he had something of the sight and he could foresee little happiness for his beloved daughter in this match. It scared him.” I see. But Ivorwen had more. Like how Elrond looked and saw death, but Arwen saw life… “Understandably, he was nervous. He'd wrung from his father his slow permission to allow him to offer marriage to Dirhael's daughter. He thought back on that conversation.” Ah, I suppose he would need something of that in this instance. “I give you my consent. But I ask only that you tread carefully, my son." I hope he did, but I am afraid he didn’t. At least not after he had an heir. I wonder if there is an Éomund meeting Théodwyn story? “Treading carefully was something Arathorn had become practiced in as the Chieftain's son, but he felt it was going to take all his skills gained through the years if he was to convince Dirhael to accept the match.” Ah. well, maybe his future mother-in-law will help. :) Indeed, by way of visions! she even sees the Return of the King!

Fimbrethil · 6 November 2025 · Chapter 1: A Gift Received

“Bristling, Arathorn almost spoke before he thought, an action most unlike him“ Hum. Here I was thinking he was like Éomund. This is a good explanation for why Dirhael didn’t want Gilraen to marry Arathorn. “Dirhael feared marriage to Arathorn would only bring sorrow to his beloved daughter.” It will, but also joy, and more lastingly, Hope. …and Renewal. Oh my the end! But why is Arathorn adding another job to Erithain’s duties? I expect to see Erithain in the future! Very good beginning! As you can see, I will now be reading this.

Lindelea · 27 June 2025 · Chapter 13: The Memory of Love

MM! Forging ahead... He longed for the years past when Estel still called him Ada and a spice cake could solve any small problem that his little foster son might bring him. Oh yes. I remember the days when a kiss on a scraped knee had magical healing properties. *sigh* Estel was stopped by the haunted look his Adar’s face – because he was there, of course. He lived it. I wonder when Elrond will tell Estel that story from the viewpoint of an eyewitness to the events. The warrior ceremony was thought-provoking and touching. [Estel's] life must be preserved at all costs. How difficult it must have been to let him go out into the world, knowing all that was riding on his young shoulders! "virgin stomach" LOL! “There is a special bond between those two. I cannot bear to think what would happen to one, if the other should come to harm, or worse.” Oh dear. Is this foreshadowing of angst to come? (Rhetorical question, no need to answer. Something will happen, or it won't. But come to think of it, if something happens, then Estel as the patrol's healer will play an intrinsic part in saving his foster-brother, as it appears at this point in the narrative.) Amaryl's advice is sound. Don't borrow trouble when there's plenty of it waiting around the corner! And bless Erithain. I'm so glad to be reading in your other story to know that he will live long past this point in time! By the way, I may not have mentioned it before, but I appreciate the translations you put at the end of the chapters where the characters speak Sindarin. (((hugs))) Lin

Lin! Hello! Sorry for the late response I am almost finished with Chapter 28 of Destiny's Child!! But Onwards! "Estel was stopped by the haunted look his Adar’s face – because he was there, of course. He lived it. I wonder when Elrond will tell Estel that story from the viewpoint of an eyewitness to the events." I think he does later on in the story. And also he relates some of it in a short ficlet on here called "Shards of Memory" Elrond telling a 10-year-old Estel about the sword that sits on the pedestal in Imladris (At least in the film version). "The warrior ceremony was thought-provoking and touching." Thanks! I love creating ceremonies and rituals for the different peoples of Middle Earth. The Elves have such a tradition of service and protection I thought that the ceremony needed to reflect that. "[Estel's] life must be preserved at all costs. How difficult it must have been to let him go out into the world, knowing all that was riding on his young shoulders!" Elrond loves him as a son and wants protect him. But he also that he can't and Estel must be allowed to grow so he can fulfill his role and his destiny. ""virgin stomach" LOL!" Indeed. I have so much fun with Elladan's inability to cook! So perfect in every other way! LOL!!! "“There is a special bond between those two. I cannot bear to think what would happen to one, if the other should come to harm, or worse.” Oh dear. Is this foreshadowing of angst to come? (Rhetorical question, no need to answer. Something will happen, or it won't. But come to think of it, if something happens, then Estel as the patrol's healer will play an intrinsic part in saving his foster-brother, as it appears at this point in the narrative.)" First, the amount of abject misery and soul-searching that one of the twins departing is more angst than I could handle writing. Nothing happens to the twins in this story but I can see myself writing a ficlet that takes place during this particular tour, per your suggestion...hmmm... Yup! Erithain does tend to populate these stories. I do love writing him... I worked really hard to learn something of Sindarin sentence structure to create my own sentences in Sindarin! I'm glad my efforts are appreciated! :-)) Thanks for reading and writing! (((hugs))) MM

Lindelea · 21 June 2025 · Chapter 12: I will learn

MM! How poignant, seeing Arathorn in his son... "When you are older..." Ah. The bane of youth. How well I remember the frustration at hearing that! Ah, yes, brothers using their anecdotes as weapons of sorts. That sounds very familiar. Snowdrop! I love it! (Reminds me of the time one of my brothers wanted to name a black puppy "Spot" because "if you stood him up against a white sheet, he'd make a black spot.") I remember naming (in a story) a very large white dog "Snowdrop" and having someone mutter that Snowbank or Blizzard might have been more accurate in naming him. (I imagine he was adorable as a ball-of-white-fuzz puppy... Speaking of that small black puppy that was not, in the end, named "Spot", my mom wanted to name him "Mittens" because he was so cute and cuddly, long before he grew up into a 120-pound monster.) With a name like "Elrohir", it stands to reason he'd take to riding quickly, if only out of self-defense against the jibes of his twin! And of course Roh did not listen! (The young Twins remind me of a pair of RL twins I knew in my early days... Ah the stories I heard their parents tell... It's a wonder they lived to adulthood.) Uh-oh. You know you're in trouble when your parents yell your full name (more or less in Elrohir's case in this story). "small gleam of interest"; let me repeat, Uh-oh. How endearing this curious, eager child is. But "there's lots I want to do" sounds ominous at best. And he really ought to listen to his betters. Meaning Gilgilath. And I certainly don't envy Elladan and Elrohir as they return home. I loved the conversation between Elrond and Estel at the end of the chapter. Well done. (((hugs))) Lin

Author's reply

Lin! "How poignant, seeing Arathorn in his son..." Yeah...Was it Elrond who said this? I think it was. Elrond has known all the Heirs of Isildur and seen all pass away adding to his weariness of the soul. I just love writing the twins!! Usually their dialog just flows onto the keyboard. They are a delight. And yes when full names are used you know you are in TROUBLE. Elrohir Half-elven was as close as I could come to it as Elves don't usually have last names. Though with me it was never my full name when my dad was really angry it was always "young lady, come here." I knew it was as my friend would say "Spotted hankie on a stick time!!" Eeeeek! I also drew on the time I was six years old and I thought it was a good time to walk around the block without telling anyone. I have truly never seen my mom more angry before or since. I can still see her walking up on the street wearing a navy blue dress with flowers on it. A memory burned into my brain! *Shudder* I thought Snowball would be an appropriate name for a big black stallion! LOL! "(The young Twins remind me of a pair of RL twins I knew in my early days... Ah the stories I heard their parents tell... It's a wonder they lived to adulthood.) Uh-oh." LOL! Exactly I imagine the twins being a handful growing up because they are a handful as adults!!! Love them. One of my only regrets in PJ's trilogy was we did not get to Elladan and Elrohir! Alas! "small gleam of interest"; let me repeat, Uh-oh." Exactly. "How endearing this curious, eager child is. But "there's lots I want to do" sounds ominous at best. And he really ought to listen to his betters. Meaning Gilgilath. And I certainly don't envy Elladan and Elrohir as they return home." Both Elrond and Gilraen know their intensely curious and rambunctious child. "There's lots I want to do" set off every alarm bell in Gilraen. I imagine Gilgilath giving Estel the gimlet eye! Which of course lead to Estel to tell him to "shut up!" Yup should have listened. I imagine quite the apology was made to his wise horse!!! I see as Elrond being the kind of parent who tries to talk to his errant child instead of being angry and giving his a swat. Though he has to fight the impulse to swat!! thanks again! Must dash! (((hugs))) MM

Lindelea · 15 June 2025 · Chapter 11: Hope is kindled

Little Estel is adorable. I really like that both Elladan and Elrond told him that Elladan fell in the stream when he was learning to fish in his day. Gandalf's merry laugh seems very much in character. He must have met Aragorn's father and grandfather and other ancestors since coming to Middle-earth centuries before this, I should think? (But one Elf, at least, has a beard! I wonder what the story behind that is? And if Aragorn will ever meet Círdan in his lifetime?) I've seen the phenomenon of bilingual children as you've described it. it's amazing to seem them code-switching without even having to think about it. I can imagine that children and animals would be drawn to Gandalf and his inner essence. I wonder if some of the rejection and suspicion we see in Tolkien's account has to do with Men having been brushed by or even under the influence of Shadow? I can only imagine how the Elves embraced Estel from the time of his arrival, considering how rare the presence of children seems to be among them. They had given Estel back his smile. This is a heart-touching thought. Ah, yes, those treasures. My windowsills were full of such treasures when the wee hobbits were little. I miss those days sometimes. (Why is Gilraen troubled at the thought of Gandalf? I wonder.) Estel is very logical. Already wet = No bath. That makes perfect sense. "small bundle of energy" paints a picture all its own. A little of Gilraen's humour shines through: He needed to be clean for the amount of trouble he was about cause. That was one of the charming elements of her relationship with Arathorn I really appreciated.

Author's reply

Lin! Yes. Little Estel is precocious and adorable. Could he be anything other. All of Imladris took the mother and boy to heart. I researched (on the internet, of course) language acquisition in the very young and they would indeed be able to learn two separate languages at pretty much the same time. And be able to speak both unaccented. It was fascinating. In my story the relationship is particularly strong between Elladan and Estel and yes it is relationship of honesty and love. They are all there to raise Estel in an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Would that all children could get that. *sigh* "Gandalf's merry laugh seems very much in character." I hear Ian McKellan laughing as I wrote that line. Gandalf has Narya, the ring of fire, given to him but Cirdan Shipwright, the only elf with a beard, curiously. It has helps all warm to him and the task that is set to him, which is why animals are attracted to him (and of course his merry laugh as well) :-)) Must dash! more at break! (((hugs))) MM Author Reply: Part two! Lin! Gilraen is troubled by Gandalf because it is a reminder of her old life that she cannot bear to think of. I didn't write about it but Gandalf would have been a frequent visitor to Fornost. She was afraid the memories he might stir up and disturb the numb cocoon she has constructed around herself and Estel. But she quickly rallies and subsumes the emotion because she realizes that it is upsetting Estel. Concerning baths: LOL of course. it is perfect kid logic!! thanks again for the insightful review! (((hugs))) MM
