And in this he follows Merry rather than his father. Heh! A good decision on his part, but not a particularly good one on hers, of course.

Author's reply

I see him as picking up on his Uncle Merry's thoughtful approach to problems. And you're right, Goldi's a "leap before you look" type. Farry's a good match for her -- though she might see him as somewhat boring, at first glance. Thanks!

Everlight · 29 May 2014 · Chapter 16: Moment of Decision

...torchlight casting eerie shadows across the determination in her face. In Moria it might have looked so, to your fathers’ eyes – her father’s, and yours... So much is said in so few words. Goldi is very much like her father in loyalty and Farry seems to take after his 'Uncle Merry' in his planning and his father in quick thinking. They will make a great team someday. ;)

Author's reply

That's one thing I love about drabbles. You have to cut and cut and cut (or at least, I do), to refine a drabble down to the essence of a much larger picture. I do think they'll make a great team someday... They're not too shabby, even at this age. Farry is able to rein in Goldi's impulsiveness, for the most part, and her impulsiveness lends him an energy that keeps him from getting stuck in thinking things through in search of the "perfect" solution. (And now I want to think up a story where he's the impulsive one, and she has to be the voice of reason.) Thanks!

Love the wording in this. They both are very much like their parents and others their parents are close to. I hope he doesn't end up having to run away with her to protect her, as much as he could at his age. I guess that will be answered in the other story. :)

Author's reply

It certainly will be answered in the other story, if I can find the time to type it in. June is a very busy month for us (probably for most people). I remember this feeling... summer's coming, and I think things will slow down in summer, but then June hits like the proverbial ton of bricks. Mixed a metaphor. Would a runaway truck fit the picture better? Thanks!

Dreamflower · 29 May 2014 · Chapter 16: Moment of Decision

Awww...he's channeling Uncle Merry. You know, I've always imagined young Faramir as physically looking much like his father (only with much darker hair) but as being much like Merry in personality.

Author's reply

It's funny, but my thinking is much the same. My Farry is more of a serious planner, though sometimes his father's whimsy shines through, in an odd moment. Obviously (the quote gives it away) he's echoing Merry, just as Goldi is echoing her father, Sam...

Larner · 1 April 2014 · Chapter 15: Turnabout is Fair Play (Comfort, part 2)

Oh, poor little girl! I still like my idea as to why the rest got left behind. At least Farry is trying to comfort her.

Author's reply

Oh, darn, I never investigated that though I suspect you told me about it before. Is it in a story of yours, may I ask (and maybe not for the first time)? I will put it at the top of my reading list and pursue it as soon as Sam and Rose return from the Southlands (not too many postings from this one, now...)

Dreamflower · 1 April 2014 · Chapter 15: Turnabout is Fair Play (Comfort, part 2)

Aww...poor little Goldi! But at least she has a "mostly clean" hankie...;)

Author's reply

LOL! Mostly clean! Just had to put that part in, it's so little-boyish...

Garnet Took · 1 April 2014 · Chapter 15: Turnabout is Fair Play (Comfort, part 2)

Awww! That is so sweet. Wonder if their parents realize that these two are already bound to each other. And heaven help the one who would ever try to seperate them.

Author's reply

I'm not sure that the parents understand on a conscious level, but Pippin does make some sort of joke about posting the Bans (or is it Banns?) after the mud fight, which makes me wonder what he's thinking... He also keeps joking about asking Sam and Rose if he can adopt Goldi, so that he can have a "golden-haired lass" too -- after all, they have more than one, so why shouldn't he take a page out of the ruffians' book and propose some judicious gathering and sharing?

Larner · 24 March 2014 · Chapter 14: On the way to the Great Smials

No, with time with Farry to look forward to I'm certain it won't seem anywhere long enough in the end. Heh!

Author's reply

You're probably right! Thanks! Looking forward to seeing you.

Larner · 14 March 2014 · Chapter 13: A Long Visit at Brandy Hall

Right now I think she NEEDS Harry-Fairy! Heh!

Author's reply

I think they're good for each other! JRRT evidently thought so ...

Dreamflower · 14 March 2014 · Chapter 13: A Long Visit at Brandy Hall

Aww...I love that Goldi is enjoying her time there! But still, missing Farry!

Author's reply

I can only imagine how diverting the visit must be... am envisioning something like a childhood visit my brother and I had on someone's farm when our parents went on a long journey. Thanks!

Larner · 4 March 2014 · Chapter 12: From Pillar to Post

Well, of COURSE the Great Smials! Of course! That, after all, is where HE is at!

Author's reply

...though of course she would never admit it... Thanks.

Armariel · 4 March 2014 · Chapter 12: From Pillar to Post

Much enjoying this little series, and look forward to the next installment. "Mouldi-Goldi"! Love it! ~~~~~{~@

Author's reply

Thank you!

Dreamflower · 4 March 2014 · Chapter 12: From Pillar to Post

I like this. Both the anxiety and the excitement are captured. It's also making me want to read fic about the kids left behind that year--I don't know if anyone's done anything extended on the subject. It would be neat.

Author's reply

Oh, so do I! If you find any such fic, please be sure to send a link my way. Thanks.

Larner · 27 February 2014 · Chapter 11: Cause and Effect

Oh, ye of little faith! There is a reason Sam was granted the title Hope Unquenchable, after all!

Author's reply

Definitely. Goldi has the will to go on, and the hope to carry her through. Thanks!

Dreamflower · 27 February 2014 · Chapter 11: Cause and Effect

Dear Goldi! She's inherited her father's hope!

Author's reply

Yes! Exactly! Thanks!

Larner · 23 February 2014 · Chapter 10: Request

Such prayers are so often listened to and acted upon, it seems. Bless Goldi here!

Author's reply

So it seems. If it worked for her father -- and she was very impressed on hearing the story, and the sincerity and wonder in Sam's voice as he told it -- well, childish faith being what it is, she's going to try.

demeter d · 21 February 2014 · Chapter 9: Crisis

It has been so lovely to see the flood of new chapters for so many of your works in progress recently! I have to say this one and Bill the Pony's story have become my favorites. (Yes, that means I need to go review there, too!)These short little "chapters" are little gems. This one ties in nicely with the bit from "End of his Rope". Only this one focuses with telescope-like precision on only Goldi's thoughts. "Poor Farry" indeed! Lovely!

Author's reply

Thank you! We were snowed in for nearly a week, and so I had plenty of time (when I would otherwise be driving people places) to pick up some threads and begin weaving once more. And once I did that, I found it to be addictive. Writing is a pleasant pastime, and I feel quite motivated to tidy up all these WIPs with their loose threads hanging out all over the place. So glad you're here, too!

Larner · 20 February 2014 · Chapter 9: Crisis

Too good a reason to worry for Faramir--and his family!

Author's reply

Goldi knows only too well Farry's fear, anguish, and desperate hope.

Dreamflower · 20 February 2014 · Chapter 9: Crisis

Oh dear!

Author's reply

Yes, this is an angsty part... Thanks!

Dreamflower · 20 February 2014 · Chapter 8: Pleading

All that, and *still* a "no"! Sam and Rose are awesome parents (from a parental POV)LOL!

Author's reply

LOL! I love that they're on the same page. No going behind one's back to ask the other...

Larner · 13 February 2014 · Chapter 8: Pleading

Ah, the logic of children! Love it!

Author's reply

I'm afraid I've used this little device already. It's based on real life anecdote passed down in our family, and I just couldn't resist...

Larner · 19 March 2013 · Chapter 7: Mud-Slinging

Finally getting time to read and review, what with intermittent computer problems and scheduling dilemmas at work and frustration with new operating systems and............. Well, the two of them are on one another today, aren't they? Heh! No, the road to true love doesn't always run smoothly, does it? Am hoping to come down on Easter, if all goes well and they don't hit me with covering someone else's shift, that is. Hope to see you briefly then, although I won't be there more than a couple of days, I fear.

Author's reply

I certainly empathize with intermittent (try, "near-constant") computer problems... Ah, but this is the sort of thing they'll laugh about, for years after... LOL!

Larner · 31 January 2013 · Chapter 6: The Confidence

Too bad the children didn't get to go to Gondor that time, although I'm certain they would do so when they could. But she can't keep a secret like that inside, can she? Dear lass. (My reason why the rest of the children didn't get to go is in "Not Gonna Happens" in "Why Mums and Dads Leave Home.")

Author's reply

Now I need to steal some time to read that one... It's been a busy time, with speech and debate tournaments popping up all over the calendar. Will be glad when the season finishes, though it's been pretty exciting, all the same.

Dreamflower · 30 January 2013 · Chapter 6: The Confidence

LOL! I am just loving these little dialogues. So they are about ten or eleven now, eh? (I'm guessing from Tolman's birthdate, depending on what time of year different birthdays are...)

Author's reply

Thanks! Yes, you're about right, I think. This is set some months before Sam and Rosie leave for Gondor, just as the planning is getting started. At present I'm following the timeline laid out in At the End of His Rope. (Though there are other stories to explore, like what happened following the misunderstanding in Comedy of Merrys... What fun!)

Larner · 27 October 2012 · Chapter 5: Challenge in the Old Orchard

Aha! She obviously considers herself the equal to any other mortal being! Heh! Glad she beat him to the top of the tree! Doubt her father would appreciate just why she felt she had to get her feet off the ground in that manner, though. Seems to me he had some difficulties when he must be off the ground in the past! Heh!

Author's reply

LOL, Goldi has a feisty mama, too, and I'm sure she's picked up a few ideas from the Tooks during visits to the Great Smials... tagging after her brothers, and Farry, and all...
