LOL! Poor Farry. But he certainly has the quick wits of his father, to think up a plausible tale on the spot!

Author's reply

Quick wits, indeed! I think this lad will be a force to reckon with. :) Thanks!

shirebound · 4 March 2015 · Chapter 5: Caught!

Lucky he had that apple handy! :)

Author's reply

Sure was! Quick-thinking, mixed with luck, now who else do we know who fits that description...?

Larner · 23 May 2014 · Chapter 4: The Seed of a Conspiracy

Oh, I remember when at the age of seven I was planning to run away. I had the doll's suitcase packed, but nothing for myself. I was certain I'd meet somone who'd take me in and provide for me, but I'd have to provide for my doll, of course. Child's logic is always interesting!

Author's reply

Yes, children's brains seem to be quite differently wired, at least the logic circuits. Thanks!

Garnet Took · 22 May 2014 · Chapter 4: The Seed of a Conspiracy

I really liked this chapter. Faramir is acting so grown-up here. He also knows the mind of a runaway so, hopefully, he can keep her from taking off or he can show her that it's not in her best interests to try to run to Gondor. I think I had a lot more thought out to say this morning but now, after a long day, I've forgot it. Glad to see this one continuing.

Author's reply

Since he has run away himself, and seen terrible repercussions (and almost really horrible repercussions), he knows caution. He also knows Goldi well, and has a great deal of respect for her stubbornness. Thanks!

shirebound · 22 May 2014 · Chapter 4: The Seed of a Conspiracy

I see that Faramir has inherited the 'sight' that Pippin demonstrated more than once on the Quest. He's a clever lad. This should be interesting! :)

Author's reply

It seemed plausible to me that Farry might have that Tookish trait. I certainly hope it is interesting! When I told Dinossiel the plot outline, she laughed, so that's a good sign. Thanks!

Everlight · 22 May 2014 · Chapter 4: The Seed of a Conspiracy

Imagine, a hobbit setting off with no food in the middle of a storm! Good thing Farry was able to stop her, he seems quite wise for his age. I wonder how he's going to keep her from running away? Guess I'll have to wait a see.

Author's reply

Only an upset, determined 11-year-old, I suppose. I remember one of my brothers running away from home some time in the afternoon and changing his mind right about dinnertime... Well, would you believe he's going to keep her from running away by helping her run away? Sometimes help is all you can offer in order to maintain some kind of control over a situation... Author Reply: (or was that too much of a spoiler? aargh. sorry, if that's the case. but there is still a lot more to the plot than that little point...)

KathyG · 22 May 2014 · Chapter 1: Message from the King

At least, we know from reading "The Tale of Years" that Pippin outlives Rose Gamgee, and then moves first to Rohan with Merry and then to Pippin.

Author's reply

Yes, it's good to be able to draw on that knowledge from "Tale of Years". I also have the advantage to be writing on a familiar timeline (to me), knowing that Pippin will not go through life a hopeless invalid, but will find unforeseen (miraculous?) healing not so many months from now. Thanks!

Dreamflower · 22 May 2014 · Chapter 4: The Seed of a Conspiracy

Oh Faramir! You are a conniver worthy of your Uncle Merry and your father put together!

Author's reply

Absolutely! He has had both of their examples to learn from, not to mention his Uncle Ferdi as well. Thanks!

Garnet Took · 27 April 2014 · Chapter 3: Momentous News

Ah, poor Goldie. For all her adventurousness she's such gentle soul. I think, too, as a middle child, or neat the middle in such a large family, she sometimes feels lost in the crowd and now she's going to have to face a whole year almost without the attention of her parent. It's a good thing that someone is aware of her situation, even if he can't do much about it. I think this is really going to seal Farry and Goldie's relationship. He knows what she's going through, even if he hasn't had similar experiences. He's been through enough to be able to support her. I really think that after this is done, they really can declare those two "off the market", if you know what I mean. :) Sorry I'm not wording things as well as I'd like this morning. Late night, early dawn.

Author's reply

You know, I hadn't really thought out that "middle child" part, but you're right. And she really, really misses her Ellie, who seems to understand her best. "Off the market" -- cute! Thanks!

Larner · 26 April 2014 · Chapter 3: Momentous News

Hmm. Not a good sign, her unwillingness to take part in the planning. Glad Faramir is watching out for her.

Author's reply

Nope, not a good sign... Thanks!

shirebound · 26 April 2014 · Chapter 3: Momentous News

Poor Goldi, I would have felt the same way. That truly is a mixed-blessing of news. ‘I’m not so fine at speechmaking as some hobbits you may know – the Mayor comes to mind…’ The young Gamgees cheered for their father. Adorable. I can imagine that so clearly.

Author's reply

It is a mixed blessing, indeed! I think the only thing that might have satisfied them would be for their parents to send for them to join them in Gondor. *sigh* What a story *that* would make! Thanks!

Everlight · 26 April 2014 · Chapter 3: Momentous News

Goldi's reaction doesn't bode well. At least she has Farry to watch over her. Glad that they were (mostly) able to alleviate disaster.

Author's reply

You're right, it doesn't bode well. You've got to watch the quiet ones... Thanks!

Everlight · 14 April 2014 · Chapter 2: Taking the Good with the Bad

Hurray!!! It was one of the good days. Those days are treasures indeed. I am looking forward to the next part.

Author's reply

Good days are treasures, indeed. Thanks!

shirebound · 13 April 2014 · Chapter 2: Taking the Good with the Bad

Farry watched, without appearing to watch I know exactly how he feels, going through this with my own parents now. Pippin is the heart of such a loving family, it makes my heart happy.

Author's reply

Sorry... been there myself. So glad this could give you a lift! Thanks!

Garnet Took · 13 April 2014 · Chapter 2: Taking the Good with the Bad

Oh, such a scene of family bliss combined with the work of the Thain and the difficulties that Pippin faced for so many years, in your stories at least. It's a bittersweet scene, but I really like moments like this. It really gives depth and reality to the story. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Author's reply

*sigh* Life is bittersweet, actually, which I guess is why when we write as "real" as possible, it comes off sounding that way. You do that very well, yourself. Thanks!

Dreamflower · 13 April 2014 · Chapter 2: Taking the Good with the Bad

It's so lovely to see Pippin surrounded by such loving care, though sad to see he needs so much of it; yet at least we readers know there are much better days to come eventually!

Author's reply

I'm not sure I'd have the heart to write this period if I did not know what the future held...! Thanks!

Larner · 13 April 2014 · Chapter 2: Taking the Good with the Bad

I rejoice that it is indeed one of the good days. And a blessed Palm Sunday and Holy week to you! I'll be heading down on the morning of the fourth, it appears.

Author's reply

Blessed Holy Week to you as well. Easter, already! Where is the year going, and how does it manage to go so fast? Thanks!

Larner · 5 April 2014 · Chapter 1: Message from the King

The news of the impending arrival of the last of the Mayor and his wife's children, as WE know, along with Pippin, of course. Love the idea of filling a parlor with a gross of luncheon guests! Pippin is in his glory with this news, I know!

Author's reply

LOL! Such a grand announcement! (And yet, done in the privacy of the Thain's quarters, so that Sam and Rose's children can have the luxury of bursting into tears, if need be, at the news that their parents will be long delayed in returning, and not worry about how it looks to the gossipy Tooks.)

Dreamflower · 5 April 2014 · Chapter 1: Message from the King

Oh what great fun to see a new chapter of this--and how wonderfully well this chapter fits with your drabble story "How to Make a Match"! I love Pippin's high spirits at Sam's news--and of course *we* know what that is! *chortle*

Author's reply

Thank you! I had actually tried to put this information into "Match" but it was just too hard to fit it into the drabble form. So this will be a companion of sorts, where I can be as wordy as I wish. Hah.

Everlight · 5 April 2014 · Chapter 1: Message from the King

Very nice job. I could almost *see* Farry and the little ones playing on the rug while their father worked. What a sweet picture. Farry's thought that he would 'give up all his dreams...' is so sad. It's so hard to live under that ever present fear of losing someone you love. (Believe me, I know.) Thank you for yet another good story.

Author's reply

You're most welcome, and thanks for the encouraging word. This is a relatively short story, in draft form, so it shouldn't take too long in the posting (nice change... the long stories take forever!). I'm sorry about your firsthand knowledge. It is hard. *hug* It was something of a comfort, and a wish that could not be granted, to bring somewhat miraculous healing to Pippin, in this cycle of stories, when I was sitting by helpless in RL, as someone I loved was slipping away. The only reason I can write a story set on this point of the timeline is because I can look forward to that healing. Otherwise, it would just be too painful.

shirebound · 5 April 2014 · Chapter 1: Message from the King

His father had made a jest about the difficulties of a united divided Kingdom So true! What a nice detail. I look forward to more.

Author's reply

Thank you! I wonder how Queen Victoria managed her far-flung Empire... quite the communications lag. At the local fort where we volunteer as historical interpreters, one of the astonishing (to me) facts is that they had to think two years ahead when putting in an order for goods to be shipped from Britain to the New World. It could take a year for the order to reach the home country, and another year for the goods to arrive. Whew.
