I don't think I've seen this one before? I'm so glad it was reposted!
“I will go with you,” Gandalf said. “You will need some light to see Sam.” He lit his staff.
It makes sense that Merry would recognize how Aragorn and Legolas are dealing with a drowning victim. I wonder just which cousin Merry is remembering…?
Frodo has obviously learned from Bilbo’s experience. Also, if the handkerchief is crisp and snow-white, this event must have happened fairly early on after leaving Rivendell, I should think.
And now the “comfort” part of the h/c form. Lovely. And of course Sam apologizes for inconveniencing the others. What surprised me (so soon in the journey, as it seems) and touched my heart was Boromir’s quick reassurance.
And Frodo’s joke was perfect.

Yep, that's the idea! Yes, Sam is hurt, but now he gets to have lots of comfort.

Oh, Sam.... :-( Nice for him to have a break, but this definitely isn't the way you'd want to get one! I laughed at 'ninnyhammer', it's such a 'Sam word'... :-P

It is, isn’t it? =)
And I agree that that's not the way anyone would want to get a break!

Love these bits about don't worry about Frodo, consider yourself on holiday, and Frodo saying you can fuss over me after you are well. :)
Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Thanks. Glad you liked it! Sam's fortunate to have friends who care about him, isn't he?

A lovely hurt/comfort story. I especially like how Boromir is one of the people who comforts Sam, and how Sam might realize from this that everyone is looking out for Frodo (nearly) as well as he is.

Yes, Sam realizes by story's end that he's not the only one looking out for Frodo; they all have a vested interest in seeing his master safely to Mordor and back. And Boromir shows more than once in the book that he cares about the hobbits, so it makes sense that he would seek to comfort Sam when he feels foolish about falling into the gully.
