· Chapter 3: Friends and Enemies
Are you going to write Cirdan's character? Just curious... I've never really read him before and wonder how he and Thranduil would interact. They are kin, but at the same time, Cirdan's at the sea while Thranduil's holed up in the forest. An interesting thing to ponder. Would they agree with one another on the matter at hand, or disagree? I think Thranduil would hold him in much respect, even though he does have a ring. And a beard.
Ooooh, looks like Elrond's having some issues with E2's behavior. I like how you only just hint at it, and how Thranduil manages to pick it up.
Yikes! Is Eilian okay? What happened to the other scout??? *grimace* The term "orc-bait" comes to mind. How on earth did Eilian manage to draw such an assignment? I mean--how did his father and brother let him go??? (Or did they not know about it until afterwards?)
I feel the strange desire to throw something at Mr. "Let's-Wait-And-See-Watch-My-Ent-Impression-Because-I'm-A-Sneaky-Little-Evil-Wizard" Curunir. Grrr. If he hadn't been so adamant and high-positioned on council, they might have been moved to action against Sauron. I'm glad Thranduil's annoyed with him!
Elrond, stop being a pansy and take a stand! Saruman is EVIL and he's TRICKING YOU. (As Glorfindel reaches across the table and attempts to slap me...)
*snort* LOVED Radagast's line about the forest creatures suffering. The man's a crazy old bat, and a lot wiser than anyone gives him credit for. I think he chooses to be insane.
Again, I'm really liking what you've done with Legolas' character. The maturity fits him well--he's beginning to act like the Legolas we all know and love during the War. It's heartening to see him willing to take away meaning from the words of others. In the past, I think he would have dismissed Galor's words much sooner. Thought about them, certainly, but now he takes them to heart. Oooh, I KNEW that Synia was up to no good! Legolas, get rid of her, for Valar's sake! She's a little leech. With claws.
GREAT chapter, as always!!! :)

Thanks, Daw, for your loyalty to the story and your fans - writing on the plane, going and coming... Now that's what I call DE-VO-TED!
Looks like Thranduil is not going to have it "his way" at Council (of course, he figured all alone he probably wouldn't). Still, I'm glad he is his usual bold self, undaunted by the others, even the Balrog-slaying Glorfindel. No other elf leader at the Council faces what he does every day. I think he does an admirable job of protecting his kingdom and his people without the benefit of a ring of power of his own. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Elrond, my boy.
I knew that Synia was seeing things in her relationship with Legolas that just weren't there. Now that the beans have been spilled and Legolas knows her bent of mind, I hope he moves quickly to remedy her misplaced thoughts. I like Legolas in the leadership role (and I think he likes it, as well). As he matures, he is discovering that responsibility is a saddle he can ride. Perhaps he will watch his father and brothers even more closely as they execute their own roles in being responsible. Well done, Commander Legolas!
Really looking forward to the next chapter and the return of Eilian at some point in the story! I still think Thranduil beats out his middle son for overall sex appeal. I always did like the strong, silent types when it comes to Wood-Elves (especially the rangy, lean-hipped kind). OK, I'm quitting before the drool ensues.
Thanks, Daw, for giving me a perfect end to a long and tiring day. Now I can go to bed happy.
Hope you had a great trip, but now that you're back, WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!!

The council meeting was very nicely written, daw. I liked how you mixed the exposition of the growing Shadow with the personal aspects of how the Shadow touched Elrond's and Thranduil's families. It made the meeting very interesting to read. I laughed when Thranduil wanted to agree with Curunir regarding Galadriel. I can sympathize with why he might feel ambivilant about her. His judgement that Curunir might be worse now, though, shows great insight on his part.
I can see that Legolas has a difficult conversation coming up with Synia. Hopefully, Galor's praise over Legolas' living up to his responsiblities will give him the fortitude to broach the topic as soon as possible. Synia and Legolas need to reach a true understanding, even though it won't be "enjoyable".
Good Chapter!

To be honest, when I read that you had written this on the plane and in airports, I sort of hoped you'd be inspired by all the security. I can imagine Legolas in an airport--with all those weapons, he'd be stopped at every checkpoint, and the guards would never be able to find them all. They'd be pulling knives out of his boots, his wrist guards . . . Elf strip-searches. Wouldn't THAT be a sight to see!
This was a wonderful chapter--I'm impressed by the internal consistency of your world. I remember the novice training exercises from previous stories, and it's great to see Legolas command one. You're right about the Wood-elf attachment to Arda--I can imagine that having to discipline one's mind so as not to get lost in the forest song would be difficult. Sometimes your stories read so much like tales about regular boys; it's wonderful to see little touches like this that remind us that we're dealing with Elves.
And you made an interesting argument for why the White Council didn't act sooner to clear out Dol Guldur. Given that Curunir hasn't gone to Isengard yet, I assume you intend that he isn't evil at this point. But he does have a point, if they just run Sauron out of Dol Guldur, where would he go? Poor Thranduil. Fighting the long fight, no Ring, and his only ally is Radagast. I'd be frustrated too. Still, though, he did show some understanding of what Elrond must be going through, with the Twins off on their own blood-hunts. Those two really do have a lot in common--no wonder they can't stand one another.
Marvelous work, as always! And you did it with all the noise and distraction of travel. I am so impressed.

Another great chapter! I've just finished watching the movie Windtalkers, so I've got battle strategy on the mind. Well done. It was easy to visualize-- very vivid and real. I also like the dialogue in the council; it said a lot about the individual participants. Can't wait for another, Lily

Curunir, he bugs me too Thrandi! Ah but our dear Woodland King is as tempermental as ever, but he controls his temper so well. I think
as is his character, Thranduil will come around to understanding the
larger picture and not begrudge Elrond and Galadriel too much, esp.
Elrond.
Oh no, Synia, it seems to me that maybe she did understand Legolas
just fine but doesn't want to admit it and so she is stating otherwise,
hoping to corner Legolas. She is as much to blame as Legolas in letting
things go to far, but their purposes in doing so are entirely different,
hers are more questionable in my mind.

I am enjoying seeing Legolas at this age. He is taking responsibility well, has more insight into his own behaviors, and we really see his leadership skills coming through. It was fun to contrast this set of novice games to his first set.
The insight about Synia is most important too. He is not blameless, but he needs to stop her now! She is apparently announcing plans he didn't know about. Adar would not be happy.
The council is interesting. Curunir sounds 'right' and believeable, except that he is sidestepping the question. It really is interesting to think about how long he was undermining the council with his own agenda.

This time I didn't even try at ff.net.
I LOVED your Thranduil/Elrond interaction. Thranduil was playing his part well. Trying to figure out what everyone else knew without tipping his hand too much. His interpretation of Elrond's response to his comments, the twins' apparent abscence, and Arwen's behavior at dinner was excellent. You have given him very strong people skills. Something many authors leave out. He cannot stay king of his realm without learning to read a situation. He figured out what was up all on his own. That was great!
So is Saruman evil yet? He seems to be walking that line already. He certainly doesn't think much of Galadriel. Thranduil timed his request for aide well but it still didn't help. He must be frustrated about the trip. I would think it hurts his pride enough to ask for help, much less be turned down. It would be hard on any monarch. I guess Radagast's comments weren't exactly the ringing endorsement he had hoped for.
Your warrior games were superb as usual. I always look forward to your strategic thinking. It is good to see Legolas in command. It is where he belongs. It was very clever to use the same spot. He would be better prepared than Annael was in the fall because he was aware of the difficulties in attacking the base. He did a great job giving feedback to his warriors and taking responsibility for his error in protecting Galor's back. He is definitely growing up.
You are right, he obviously didn't take Synia's plans into account. She needs to leave MY elf alone. I knew she was trouble from the start. The worst part for Legolas is that he is not even interested in her and she is planning his future. I imagine dating a Prince can skew your perspective. I hope he breaks it off soon. I am getting jealous.
I love to read your updates!

There is someone who is actually more irritating than Thranduil? I'm not so sure that I would like to meet this Curunir! And I will be curious to see if
Thranduil can keep his "cool" during what promises to be a long drawn out series of meetings. It is easy to see how he has maintained his realm for as long as he has - he is very perceptive when it comes to sizing up other people.
Oh, Legolas! I warned you, didn't I? I hate to say "I told you so", but it was so easy to see that Synia had a different agenda. You may have thought you made yourself clear to her, but apparently she was only hearing the part she wanted to hear. Now feelings will be hurt, and hopefully her friendship with Beliniel will not affect your friendship with Annael. Hurting her good friend will not endear you to Beliniel, and that in turn could make your relationship with Annael a little rocky. It's time to take Galor's advise and face up to your responsibility - even though it may not be pleasant. For whatever it's worth - I believe in you!

I like the latest chapter. I agree that Thranduil would probably have been on the White Council, especially as one of its key aims was to discover the identity of the Neromancer - and Thranduil had more than a passing interest! But when it met in 2941 Thranduil wasn't there - he was busy locking up Dwarves!
I like Elrond's obvious worry over his sons, and Thranduil realising he can't stop them. And the training exercise was good, too - Legolas has clearly learnt a lot from similar exercises in the past! I do hope his 'wood-elf' companion will shape up - I like him.

A belated review for this chapter before I go on to the next! I think Ithilden was wonderful standing in for his father - he would make a fine King if anything happened to Thranduil (but it had better not!).
Annael's coming of age ceremony was lovely, and very elvish, somehow. I liked Legolas thinking his friend suddenly looked different! But I don't like Legolas' girlfriend - she most definitely in NOT the one for him! I do hope you will remove her soon, but not in a way that will cause too much angst for Legolas.

Oops, I'm so sorry, I forgot to review chapter 2. I blame Uni on this one.
Just so you know, I loved Annael’s coming of age ceremony, even though Legolas acted very rudely (and stupidly too!).
I can understand Thranduil’s impatience with the Council. They’re all away from harm, and do not deal with orcs, spiders, etc. on a daily basis. Clearly they all need to spend a few weeks on the Southern Patrol to get a good view at reality.
Nasty surprise about Synia. As we have not seen much of her, I reserve my judgement, but is she more interested in Legolas or in the son of the King? Or do you interpret bonds as being only between two people very much in love?
I think that Legolas is going to be a very good leader of men (elves?). He’s still doing errors due to his inexperience, but he is not afraid to acknowledge and correct them.
Thanks for another great chapter.

Daw,
Things are moving along...The White Council meeting was great. Thranduil is as cunning as any of the others and is continuously putting the pieces of the puzzle together. I think he's starting to see and sense a bigger picture..especially where Saruman is concerned.
The war games were well done. It was interesting to see Legolas in a leadership role since in the last training exercise of this sort we know about, he was taken out early because of his archery skills. I thought he showed good decision making and compassion where little Galor was concerned. And then our littlest novice taught Legolas something. I really liked that.
I was afraid that Synia was a bit over confident and not really listening to Legolas when he told her his plans. He's a got a bit of problem with her. Thranduil will be most displeased. I'm still a bit anxious that Legolas is going to convince Ithilden to post him to the south. I know he's a better archer than either of his brothers and he may not be as unpredictable as Eilian, but he still lacks the experience necessary for this place. Gosh, I'm sorry, Daw, I sound like his mother.....and getting all worked up about my baby. "Well," she says, her ire rising again like a candy thermometer in hot fudge, "you are the one, I think, I need to see about this debacle! And I am holding you personally responsible for this whole mess!" :>)
I am truly enjoying this story, getting all a twitter...and looking forward to the next chapter. Thanks, Daw... Karen

Oh the oath's were beautiful, just how they should have been. I was so very touched by the simplicity of the oaths Annael took, yet there was *so* much power, so much emotion in them. I liked the simple nature of the coming of age ceremony.
I am enjoying reading Legolas at this age, a lot! He is taking on the more complicated characteristics that come with adulthood... wait is that such a good thing for us grown ups? I am now thoroughly excited to see where Legolas will go in this story. What you have done with Ithilden and Eilian as mature characters is wonderful, and now we have Legolas on the cusp.

I was so happy when I got the story update alert. Just who does your boss think he is? telling you your work should take priority over you writing? Crazy guy.
It's very funny that Sinnarn is so like Eilien. That's good and bad for Ithildien. He knows his brother so maybe that'll give him insight on how to handle the boy. However he also has to dread what Sinnarn will grow up to be like. Also, Eilien and Ithildien are as different as night and day. Hopefully Ithildien has grown to respect those differences and will be able to respect them in his son. I think he needs to work on saying "yes" to Sinnarn more often, not just "no you can't do that."
I wonder if Ithildien's relationship with Legolas has changed now that Ithildien's a father. Maybe Legolas seems more grown up to him since he has his baby.
The coming of age cerimony was really nice. I can imagine that parents both look forward to and dread that day. While I'm sure they're incredibly proud of their child who's no longer a child, it must be hard knowing that the time has come for him to join the fight in protecting the homeland, and that he'll be placing himself into danger. Anyway I was very touched by the cerimony. Shame on Legolas and Synia for going off to make out! Very insensitive.
I have to say...I really do not like Synia. And not just because she's sort of with Legolas. I don't like her as a person! She seems kind of self-centered and I can see her being manipulative. I also doubt she'd put herself on the line for a friend. Annael's girlie seems really sweet, are she and Synia good friends? I don't think I'd be friends with Synia.
I love your stories. I didn't read them in order and now I'm going back to do that.

Oh, I loved the coming of age ceremony! It's perfect! Just exactly what one would expect for Elves. I especially liked the idea of surrendering the right to protection and guidance, but not the right to love and counsel. And accepting the responsibility for one's own choices and actions, and promising to serve the community. It reminds me a bit of a bar mitzvah, but more explicit in the promises. I think Americans need a good coming of age ceremony like this--going to a bar and getting drunk when you're 21 sends exactly the wrong message.
So Legolas has girls chasing him now, eh? Poor guy--it's not even close to what he'd experience if he were to drop into modern earth, but even for an Elf he's pretty darn gorgeous and he's just going to have to live with that. But of course I'm more interested in his weapons training than his encounters of the female kind--I can imagine those just fine on my own. ;)
It is a delight to see a near adult Legolas now--although of course his nephew fills the cute kid category nicely as well. Looks like Ithilden picked up some good parenting tips from Thranduil, eh? Speaking as an older sibling, I would say that the younger kids definitely get some slack from the parents.
Looking forward to some good Thranduil/Noldor tension next chapter (and yay to him for keeping his boot knife--Legolas did the same thing in "A Question of Duty," didn't he?) and more baths wouldn't hurt either. ;)

Ah, the many sides of Ithilden. I always liked him but I think since you introduced Alfirin to the stories we see so much more of his character. I love when he does his ‘Thranduil thing’ – I had a little chuckle at the line ‘“Esgaroth’s needs are not my concern,” he said coolly’ because it sounded exactly like Thranduil and then I read the next line and realised that others thought so too... then he flicks to being the family man and I love him just as much – it really makes me smile to hear him being called “Ada”!! I guess he now probably realises how tough it was at times for his father trying to juggle so many roles at once.
Alfirin is wonderful as always. Sinnarn is a bit of a handful, though, isn’t he??! Ithilden seems a bit worried that his son will be like Eilian but I don’t think that’s really a bad thing – Eilian has so many amazing qualities, he just needed someone to understand him a bit more and Ithilden certainly seems to have learnt a lot. It’s hilarious the way he forbids anything that Sinnarn might even be contemplating so that the only way out is direct disobedience. That bit about ‘rules’ was quite wise – are you speaking from experience there?!
So Legolas is still chafing a bit at the restrictions imposed upon him? It’s funny that he is surprised that the adults think of children as free. I was wondering as I was reading why he thinks adulthood symbolises freedom. But then, I suppose we all did...
The ceremony was beautiful. I loved the ritual questions. You absolutely caught the essence of that step away from childhood. I particularly liked the involvement of the family – it made it more intimate somehow. As a little side-note, I thought it was lovely that Elowen still treats Legolas as a son!
Annael and Beliniel seem incredibly close. I’d love to see them bond, although I can understand how hard Legolas is finding it as his friend seems to move further away from him. I think our little elfling may find that adulthood isn’t all he thinks it will be...
Alrighty, what’s up with Synia and Legolas?! How unbelievably awkward they are together. At first I thought I didn’t like her but actually I feel a little sorry for her. Isn’t Legolas being a bit selfish leading her on? Doesn’t he remember how much it hurt when Miriwen wasn’t truthful with him? And I can’t believe he didn’t stay with Annael on this of all nights... O.k., I’m finished my rant. Actually, I have to say, you write all the awkward stages of adolescence so well, especially here with hormones gone completely awry!
Oh, and it’s great to see Tonduil here – we don’t get to see enough of him!:)

If at first you don't succeed...
Ithilden did a great job handling the men of Esgaroth, once again proving his political skills. He backed them directly into the corner where he wanted them. His technique may be Thranduilesque but it is still effective. His tone is a bit kingly and clipped with his advisors, just like his Adar. I loved your interlude with Alfirin and Sinnarn. His concern over his wife's day was very sweet. You have made him a very loving husband.
Handling kids at that age is difficult. Do you rejoice in the discovery of the snake skin or do you go directly to scolding for putting your hand in the hole? Tough one. You don't want to quell his enthusiasm but you don't want him to get bitten either. I probably would have spent a little more time admiring the skin. Sinnarn obviously is missing his Ada while the King is away.
I have a feeling we will see him by the river again.
His beautiful wife slips into something more comfortable, then Legolas comes in, then they get a bedroom visitor. Poor Ithilden, I feel sorry for him. Children are definitely not good for your love life.
Annael's ceremony was great! Elowen's reaction was wonderfully portrayed. It was Major Mommy Trauma. I got choked up for him and for Legolas. The poor prince won't have his Nana to present anything to him at his ceremony. I hope his brothers do. Synia sounds like one of those velcro girl friends - you can't shake free. Why do I think she is going to cause a problem later? I agree with Tonduil. Legolas should not have snuck off to be alone with a maiden he does not care for during such an important event. I guess he is not quite an adult yet.
I think I remembered everything... Looking forward to the weekend. Have a good trip!

*falls over laughing* Merciful Valar! Ithilden has been utterly cursed: his son is a miniature incarnation of his wildest brother! There's something oddly fitting about that. :) I predict some tense moments between he and the little one when Sinnarn gets older. Much like Thranduil and Eilian.
And speaking of Eilian--where is he? Am I allowed to make requests? ;) Bring back Celuwen, too!!! (Hey, if she doesn't want Eilian, I'LL take him.)
Is Thranduil going to make it back in time for Legolas' coming of age? *lol* I liked the way you wrote his thoughts on Rivendell. He's impressed, but having a hard time admitting it. Stubborn old bat of an Elvish King. I love him to death.
I love the slight arrogance you've given Legolas. Actually, I guess it's more of a cheeky self-assurance. Harmless in nature and unoffending. He seems to be a middle balance between Ithilden and Eilian.
What happened to Annael during his seclusion?
I don't think I care for Synia all that much. She seems more of a "dime-for-a-dozen" type, if you know what I mean. Then again, Legolas appears to regard her in similar manner as well. He's the prince, so he's going to have a pretty girl on his arm, I suppose. (Perhaps he ought to take a lesson or two from Mirkwood's middle prince on the subject.)

Good opening chapters, I liked seeing Thranduil in a different setting. I don't think we've seen him in any situations where he wasn't top dog, it will be interesting to watch how he handles himself with his peers.
I already don't like Synia, what could Legolas be thinking! He wants fun, but doesn't want to commit his heart. Not very noble of the young elf.
I'm not too worried about Anneal at this point, I know we see him some 500 years later in "A Question of Duty". Perhaps you are going to mess with his mind or perhaps his lady love???

Here is my favorite line: “And,” Ithilden added,... “you may not put your hand in any hole into which you cannot see. That is a rule.” It's the "That is a rule" part that cracked me up.
The coming of age ceremony was very nice, and of course Annael was ready for it before it happened. If he does bond soon, it would put some distance between him and Legolas, I think.

This was terrific, Daw. I love the domestic bliss we are witness to with Ithilden and his family. Oh, boy, it looks like Sinnarn is going to be another Eilian (who I miss this time around, but I'm holding out for the bonding story of he and Celuwan--I probably misspelled her name, sorry). I got very teary eyed over Annael's coming of age ceremony and the solemnity of it all. I'm losing all my babies!! Sob..! Oh, well, time has a way of growing everyone up whether we wish it or not. Legolas is smart to not deepen a relationship that he is not wholeheartedly a party to. I don't like to think of him using this girl for his own pleasure, but I guess you can't blame him in a way. He's smart enough to know when to apply the brakes, unlike human males the equivalent of his age. I feel sorry for the girl, however. It is all to obvious that she has an altogether different take on their relationship than Legolas does. Annael, on the other hand, seems terribly serious. Well, he is grown, after all, and so bonding and marriage and children will definitely be something he can now consider.
It will be hard to have to actually WAIT (perish the thought) for the next chapter that will be longer in coming since you are leaving town. I hope you dream up lots of other story plots while you are traveling to and fro. Keep a notepad handy!

I loved the image of Ithilden doing his best "Thranduil". I can only imagine how intimidating he must have looked. I also enjoyed the glimpse into his life behind closed doors. I had to giggle at the image of Alfirin marching into the throne room and forcing food down Ithinden's throat. She'd do it too! And Sinnarn sounds like an adorable, mischevious elfling. It's a little scary how much he seems to be like his Uncle Eilian.
So Annael is an adult now. It's hard to believe! But he seems up to the challenge, and has matured in many ways. Not the least of which is in the romance department. Sounds like he has a serious romance going with Beliniel. I'm afraid that Legolas is headed for a problem though. He is not serious about Synia, but I am afraid that she may be hoping to convince him otherwise. He is a prince, and would be considered a great "catch" I'm sure. He better watch himself with this one, she seems determined to ensnare him. And even if he does not like her in "that" way, and has told her he does not intend to become involved with anyone, feelings will still be hurt if things go too far. Be careful Legolas - I predict problems ahead!

I loved the spirit of Thranduil inhabiting his eldest son. It was fun to watch. And do I detect traces of Legolas in his nephew's curiosity about the world around him?
Speaking of Legolas, it *was* a social gaffe for him to leave the festivities to be with Synia. There are some times when public responsibilities take precedence over private desires. But that's a lesson that takes some time to learn. And young lust doesn't make it any easier to learn that lesson! I'm glad that Legolas hasn't deceived her about his long-range plans for their relationship. But it's obvious Synia has other long-range plans in store for them. I fear much emotional turmoil and more social gaffes are in store for the not-quite-an-adult prince. Hopefully, Annael will help him out in the days to come.
