Oh, this is awesome! I love Legolas's snarky thoughts and the fell land of New Zealand. I've been waiting to see a follow-up to Bryn's work for quite some time. This is an excellent and hilarious start.

Author's reply

The fair Web Elf Nilmandra has managed through her technical wizardry to retrieve thy accidently deleted review! After that much effort on the part of our Web Elf, I'd best reply! Thank you for the review. Also, thank you for teaching me a new word: "Snarky". I am old and fading, but I do like this word. Its sound is very evocative of its meaning. We old and fading ones call that onomatopoeia. 'Tis a lovely linguistic concept. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

bryn · 20 December 2003 · Chapter 9999: Esgaroth-upon-Mirkwood, Middle Earth

I made the mistake of reading this while chewing gum. After I managed to recover from my choking fit, and ensuing anxiety that, "it stays in your stomach for seven years!" I was beset by yet another howling fit of laughter... *ROTFL* Orophins Dottir, you are an absolute gem!!! I've never been so honored or amused in my life. Love the dark humor--LOVE it. *snicker* And the character thoughts... *falls over laughing* Sweet Valar it's too much!!! :)

Author's reply

Seven years? I thought it but five. I must be more careful in future. Thank you, dear inspiration! Your review is as no other to this humble tale. You did indeed set me on the path to perdition in writing, and I thank you. For a festively black holiday note, may I urge "Once in Royal Imladris' City"? I would value thy opinion, my Warped One. Besides, the eggnog is quite tasty I am told. Whatever you celebrate, may it be happy and healthy! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

The Karenator · 16 December 2003 · Chapter 9999: Esgaroth-upon-Mirkwood, Middle Earth

My Lady Scribe, I am always vexed by the ignorance of these humans who hide their henious crimes behind the veil of research. There is nothing at all that denotes any understanding of their fell deeds. Alas, I fear they are dim witted. They will understand soon enough, my fair Scribe. Despite my fury at the callousness of these humans, I do greet the coming coronation with great joy. Under Elessar's guidance, I cannot help but feel hope for these wayward children. With much anticipation do I and my household look forward to your company at the festivities. Until then and the word of your recountings of the trip to New Zealand comes safely to our hands, may the stars shine upon your path. Your servant, The Karenator

Author's reply

AI, it is good to hear frome thee e'er we meet at the coronation. I am abroad late as, as ever, for I, thy loving brother, Mir hath forgotten that Tingallen's wash must be done. I do excuse this fair maiden who is my love for our fair Mother hath warned me that Tingalen has been a bit testy today and doth call upon his services closely. Naneth says that she is suffering from hormonal imbalances. Brother, thou knowest I love thee and the lady thou dost serve. Still, I do NEED thee here by my side. I am fast growing insane. Succor me, my brother! Mir P.S. Forgive me. I have taken a deep breath and regained my strength. I will see you at the coronation and embrace you to my heart!

The Karenator · 16 December 2003 · Chapter 12: The Harbor at the Grey Havens

Oh my Lady, The wedding was a most joyous affair. Intimate and abounding with the true love of the dark prince and his short love. I must say I was somewhat taken aback as I read Galadriel's vision of her foster daughter as being 'almost pretty'. Truly one so wise as the Lady of Light knows that elves see only the beauty that dwells within. It does not pay for one to look as good as the Lady of Light. How soon a few hundred centuries of seeing only one's own fairness in the mirror can cloud the recognition of beauty in others. I shall speak to her of this for if the sweet Giluviel should catch wind of such utterings, his heart would be broken for his true love. An elf witch should know better. I cannot disagree that Elrond is among those still clinging to sanity, but even he has tread upon the dignity of the young mortal by casting aspersions upon her writings...a wharf rat, indeed. I do not suppose anyone has pointed out to the Lord of Imladris that those who wear butterflies in their hair should be careful about slinging barbs. Alas, my heart did go out to the fair Glorfindel as he heard the fell news of Asfaloth's missing bells. There is much for him to decry. A presence such as his should not be forsaken in the interest of time and to beef up Elrond's daughter's appearances. Truly, he has cause for complaint. He and the good King Gil-Galad have good petition for remuneration. My sources tell me that this is not the first time Cirdan has been dumped in the drink and he has yet to rust. Inform Tingalen to have no fear. I will await further news from you, my Lady Scribe. Namarie, The Karenator

Author's reply

Galadriel is a loving mother, but she sometimes doth forget not all can have her perfection. Do speak to her, my Lady. Mir doth love his short one and it is wrong to bring this dark elf more pain. He has already suffered too much in my stories. Legolas did look exceedingly handsome at the nuptials, did he not? I fear that we shall be swatting the maidens away in droves. Fortunately, his Naneth is here to assist us. Naneth hath volunteered to do all the hair braiding for the coronation. The Scribe is much relieved at this. Legolas doth whine so when she doth braid his herringbones. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

daw the minstrel · 16 December 2003 · Chapter 9999: Esgaroth-upon-Mirkwood, Middle Earth

Great ending, OD. You've got the tone just right!

Author's reply

Thank you, dear Academic, for all thy reviews and faithful attendance upon this story. I tried to make the report like so many of the ones I have read. Say nothing truly controversial even as thou doth announce nuclear meltdown. We go now to Ellessar Telcontar's with a clean conscience. We have put the first part of this baby to rest! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Nilmandra · 16 December 2003 · Chapter 12: The Harbor at the Grey Havens

Ah, isn't Glorfindel mighty when he grows and glows? Really, I wouldn't mess with him. He makes Legolas look like an elfling. PJ might be in for a real surprise when he meets this re-embodied elf with the light of Valinor in his eyes :D And yes, Tingalen is right, Elrond is one of the sanest elves out there. :D:D

Author's reply

Yes, I just have this wonderful image of Glorfindel and Gil-Galad stalking the streets of Wellington. Attacking Weta Workshop? Meeting Alan Lee? And then there is the Abomination. The First Age Elves meet New Zealand. I tremble at what will happen. We have our tickets to Aragorn's coronation tomorrow already in our hot little hands. As I advise all, please send all new offending scenes, etc. to the Scribe via Quick Post. We are open to suggestions for which the Abomination must pay! Hope you like the Epilogue. I am contemplating at least a two-week vacation from Arda after bringing this one home. The Caribbean sounds nice. That Will Turner is quite a hunk. And, Capt. Jack Sparrow?? Depp rules! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Marnie · 15 December 2003 · Chapter 12: The Harbor at the Grey Havens

No! It better had be only the first part. I want to see what happens in New Zealand! Loved Glorfindel's righteous wrath at the bell-less appearance of Asfaloth and his own total non appearance in FotR. I guess you do need to be big and frightening to carry off a name like Goldilocks of the House of the Golden Flower - but he manages it! And Tingalen needs to watch what she's thinking about those blonde elves - at least one of whom can read her mind ;) Very funny, but *more* please!

Author's reply

Never fear! There will be an epilogue yet to this story. I promised myself to finish at least Legolas' revenge before the premiere here in the US of "Return of the King". I have just barely met my deadline! After I digest any new horrible travesties from our Abomination, I shall no doubt take up pen on the "Voyage to New Zealand". Eru help me! Send all suggestions of offending scenes care of Orophin's Dottir by quick post to Taur E-Ndaedelos! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil PS--Hast thou already had the last installment in the UK or. . .?

Lindorien · 14 December 2003 · Chapter 3: The Dungeons of Thranduil

"Oh, swell! Elrond is in his damn library again, and this time he’s got Galadriel with him, and I’ve got that stupid shieldmaiden of the Rohirrim galloping toward my palace to take care of the Mary Sues. THAT should drive the shadows of evil back from the Wood as soon as they become aware of it. No doubt the next squirrel I see shall be white! <<< oh dear! Sides begin to ache! I have to tell you Orophin's Dottir, I know almost nothing about elves, other than most of these people are ones. But this is too funny. Poor Legolas! I am late arrived from seeing The Last Samurai and must admit that the more I see of the previews of ROTK the more it looks like a parody of itself! It hurts. It burns. Last Samurai should definitely nab Best Picture, it is awesome. However...ROTK looks far too rife with material to ignore for long in the, um, 'movieverse' universe. isn't it the classic badfic portrayal of Thranduil as 'mean'. You honor badfic with your effort. I salute you. Lindorien

Author's reply

Ah, yes, Thranduil. My liege. He doth have a hasty temper. I could not resist. Giluviel is far too trusting an elf. That is why he doth have his ever cynical brother Legolas! Must see "Last Samurai" after the Solstice madness dies down. Where are my lembas latkes? I await them drooling. The Scribe

Lindorien · 14 December 2003 · Chapter 2: The Library of Imladris

Can just hear the dialogue. "Excuse me Námo, we’d really like to have Legolas and Haldir back, so how about it?" <<< Oh dear. Are you going to have Arwen do in Glorfindel? If I had a prequel to my story, I'd have her kicking his lifeless body under a log and throwing brambles over it to hide the evidence and discourage plundering by coyotes. PJ -- the abomination! Perfect! In the TTT EE at the end of disc one, all I heard when Faramir gave his little speech was "This movie will make corpses of us all!" Oh dear, oh dear. This is so cleverly done, Orophin's Dottir.

Author's reply

Lady, if a fit of madness should overtake you and convince YOU to do the prequel with Arwen, I should die happy. (I may die by the hands of another by the time I get this crowd to the Havens for the sail to New Zealand. I'd like it to be with a happy smile on the old Scribe's face!) Should be updating either tonight or tomorrow. I promised myself I would at least get Legolas' part of the Plan over before the "Return of the King" premiere. You'll know me if we are at the same show. I'll be the one skulking there with a steno book to record the Abomination's newest sins! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Lindorien · 14 December 2003 · Chapter 0: Prologue: The Halls of Mandos

Haldir continued. "There were a lot of the Uruk-Hai actually. I managed to kill the first one." They made a lot of fuss about that one. Kept screaming for something called an ambulance. Very confusing. Haldir sighed. <<< Oh, dear sister in insanity. I now understand your copious reviews. I just found this thing. Must warn you, I understand not the elvish language, nor the intracacies of elven culture -- at least, I have been told as much, many times over and by those far more learned than myself. that said. I plan to sit down and have a very nice time with this one. Lindorien

Author's reply

*Scribe happy dances through the Woodland Realm!* Welcome to Taur-E-Ndaedelos and my particular warped corner of this fearful forest. Sit down and be at home! You will fit right in. *chuckles evilly* I assure you, Fair Lindorien, that between our collected works we have no doubt offended all. Shall I send you my recipe for semi-rotten tomato sauce? There has been no one sacred to us. I am sure the Thranduil crowd has a wanted poster out on me after I made him do what he did. The fact that I made him repent deeply in the next chapter did me no good. The Good Thranny crowd can be very stern. Prince Legolas has had to assign me a bodyguard. Not that I'm complaining. They are very hunky warriors and not from Imladris for which I am thankful. I still am in awe that you actually killed Frodo. Bilbo annoys me mightily and I've toyed with the idea, but. . . The Shire crowd makes Thranny's bunch look like softies. Harm not a single hair on a hobbit foot if you value your life is their motto. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil (Known to her fellow insane ones as Dottir or the Scribe!)

The Karenator · 14 December 2003 · Chapter 11: The Gorge of Mirkwood

My Lady Scribe, You update too quickly for a simple elf witch to keep up. I see that the foul LH has finally met his doom. Long had he worked his plans and laid in wait for those he ensnared. What better punishment! Though I must admit, I fairly did scream when I realized what housed at bottom of the gorge. I fear I am still squimish about Shelob's kin. Somethings do not diminish over the ages. I must agree with the blond Thranduilion. It is best not to soil the joy of his dear brother and his beloved. There may come a time in the future when such deeds may be revealed, but the new relationship is tender and to bring back bad memories would be of no use. He and Haldir have acted wisely. Yet, there are more offenders to be dealt with. I will await word of their demise. Your humble servant, The Karenator

Author's reply

Oh, we liked the spider. Yes we did, precious! I grew up with an older brother who was a budding naturalist. Snakes, spiders, lizards and all assorted creepy crawlies do not bother me at all. I did always get stuck with holding the pillowcase of squirming trophies on our snake-hunting quests. Yes, I did enjoy killing off LH after all these years! Writing doth bestow power! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Marnie · 14 December 2003 · Chapter 11: The Gorge of Mirkwood

Next stop New Zealand :) Sounds good! But Legolas and Haldir were definately rather scary in this one. I wouldn't like to get on their bad side! I liked the way two annoyed Galadhrim were worth ten elves of Imladris. Too right! But I can't help feeling rather sorry for those foul fiends of researchers. 'Twas a ghastly revenge. Somehow, though, I'm not going to feel so bad when something bad happens to PJ. He deserves it ;)

Author's reply

Waste no pity on these foul creatures. I have just read something from Bryn that led me to believe that their next target would have been the Golden Wood! Itremble at what we hope we have escaped. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

daw the minstrel · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 11: The Gorge of Mirkwood

Oh excellent. A well deserved revenge. I love the contrast between the slangy, current day thoughts and the formal speech.

Author's reply

Thank you. They were most evil and did beckon their wretched fate to them. Go, Legolas! Go, Haldir! Humble Scribe, etc.

Nilmandra · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 11: The Gorge of Mirkwood

Oh, my, elven justice was swift and deadly! A little different than our justice system!!

Author's reply

Yes, we do not muck about in Taur-E-Ndaedelos. There is no appeal to clog up the courts. An absolute monarchy is an awesome thing. Glorfy doth figure in the new chapter. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

daw the minstrel · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Taur-E-Ndaedelos

Oh wow, the researchers bit the dust. Good. I look forward to seeing what happens to JV. I liked the annoyance of Legolas with the Galadhrim and of Tingalen with Eowyn. Practical souls, both of them.

Author's reply

Gracious! I apologize for not replying e'er this. I was probably too anxious to see the RotK. Legolas and Tingalen are just what the rather ethereal Giluviel needs to keep him alive in the future. Thanks for your faithful reviews! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Nilmandra · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Taur-E-Ndaedelos

I am trying to decide if one of them should live to take word back that the wood elf is not merely a fair and merry creature of the wood, but also a mighty warrior who should not be messed with.... It might keep future researchers away....or it might draw more crazy and testosterone driven tough guys to attempt to capture an elf. Not that they could....

Author's reply

Apologies for the late reply! As I said to Daw, I think my mind was on the release of the RotK at the time! I have spoken with Bryn. She tells me that she has a plot bunny about the Elves and SCIENCE! I am afraid, Nilmandra, very afraid. As ever, thank you for your faithful reviews. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

luv ur story...hilarious!! just wanted to tell u that Thranduil is sadi to be a blond in "The Hobbit", except he doesn't have a name yet...just "the Elven King of Mirkwood"

Author's reply

Yes, I thought at much but I was working very late at night and was too lazy to look it up for confirmation! I have been duly slapped silly over this! Sigh. Welcome to this story! I thank you for your review and hope you will continue with us along this somewhat mad path. I warn you that chapters 4, 6 and 7 are much, much darker than this one. Hang on though and we shall still get our revenge in the end. If this company of reviewers seems strange to you, know that they are the best of Arda. Blessings upon them and upon your house as well. Let me know what you think as we continue. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Oh, my gosh, you've really been in the trenches, haven't you? I spent nearly four weeks on the road this year on bull**** trips eating up end-of-fiscal-year budget surpluses. Maybe you could do a comic strip or something - Dilbertion?? Loved Thranduil bellowing. He manages to bellow even when he's thinking to himself, doesn't he? Oh, I'm just salivating at the idea of Eowyn facing off against the tribe of Mary Sues. Bless you.

Author's reply

Yes. Budget surplus. The delightful courses. Not something sensible as the "Care and Management of your Elf" mind you. No, we get things like "Decisioning" (I SWEAR that that was the real title of a course prospectus. My beloved boss and I chucked it quickly into the Void.) Fair warning to tread softly as you do approach chapters 6 and 7. Repeat firmly to yourself that I do really love my liege lord. He but had a moment or two. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Oh, the peek inside Elrond's peevish mind was delicious. I always knew he was not as perfectly adjusted as he appeared. And with mother-in-law problems, too. Also I have been reading your author replies and I just have to say: My parents thought I was weird...

Author's reply

Thy parents think their child weird? How can this be? If it doth aid your sanity profile with them, the Karenator and I shall visit bearing Thranny, Haldir, Orophin, balrog fingers, tacos and Glorfy newly returned from the French Quarter. Then shall you appear as fair to thy parents as the waterfalls of Imladris! Speak softly on Elrond. I am in deep doo-doo with our Web Elf over my treatment of her beloved Peredhil. I fear oft that only our shared love of Glorfindel keeps us on speaking terms. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

OK, I know I'm a day late and a dollar short back here on Chapter 1, but I am determined to be a good reviewer and do this one chapter at a time, if you can bear with me. I am trying to follow the exemplary example of my hero and mentor, the Balrog Mama. Unfortunately I have none of her wit. Sigh. Anyway, I am cackling with delight at this romp you have blessed us with, and I thank you.

Author's reply

Welcome back, Fair One! You are most exemplary yourself if you would tread in the Balrog Babe's footsteps. Hang around with us long enough, Precious, and you shall be e'en as demented as we. I do appreciate your reviews, but I give fair warning that the Dottir tends to reciprocate and review thy own stuff. Hath thou aught to hide? Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Nilmandra · 20 November 2003 · Chapter 9: The Scientific Research Department of Middle Earth

Ok, before I say anything else.............you called my Elrond a library rat? A rat? Rodent? I think you forget that the peredhil is also a warrior...and accomplished one.....and he and his Last Alliance battle sword still work well as a team. *grin* And Glorfindel says not to blame him - you put the words in his mouth but he claims he did not say them! Speaking of Glorfindel.......is he not to die for gorgeous? Weehee! Loved your description of him. And I anxiously await the camping of the mortals in the great wood. Oh, yes, we do. Mr. Greenleaf may shock them - - and the 'scientists' may learn that those bows and swords are not only real, the owners know how to use them!

Author's reply

Ah, yes! Rat. Long-tailed rodents of the family Muridae, of the genus Rattus and related genera, distinguished from the mouse only in being larger. Ai, Elrond! Did Glorfindel say this of you? (Lady, this is the elf who bells Asfaloth to annoy his friend. Believeth thou that he would not call his friend a library rat? You wound me deeply!) I am on my third cold river today because of Glorfindel's fair visage etc. (particularly the etc.!) He is some elf and a killing machine. Thanks for the information on his skill at all weapons that you have imparted. I thought I was even more demented than usual because I couldn't pin down one in particular. Rubber swords shall be as nothing to the mighty Glorfindel! BTW, you may have loosed a plot bunny. To which of Valar would be your suggestion that Thranny supplicate himself because of his madness in his almost kinslaying? We want the boy to get off as easily as possible mind you! Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

Marnie · 20 November 2003 · Chapter 9: The Scientific Research Department of Middle Earth

Oh, I love this chapter! Gandalf doing his 'I'm a harmless old man' impression; Gorgeous Glorfindel and his 'you seem to bat thine eyes with great speed at my countenance." Mr O'Lorien!! Not to mention the delicious irony of sending the dissection team to meet with Mr.Greenleaf in his castle :) Oh and 'one of those Eastern European places. Valinor or something like that.' is a corker :) As is 'We ... have found this creature skulking in the corridors of thy keep.' Altogether one of the best so far :)

Author's reply

*blushes and bows low* Thank you for your praise, for I value the words of the Celeborn keeper and ever take them to my heart. I am going to have to cheer up my liege a bit. He is still brought low by his assault upon his biddable son. We keep telling him we know he was mad at the time. (Fear not, we have carefully measured the length of his sword blade and are careful to stand well beyond its reach when e'er we speak on this tender subject.) Eowyn perchance may speak with him on Tingalen's behalf. Eowyn knows much of the madness of fathers-in-law and she has comforted Tingalen much. Humble Scribe to his Majesty Thranduil

The Karenator · 20 November 2003 · Chapter 9: The Scientific Research Department of Middle Earth

Oh, my lady, I recognize the foul countenance of the one so named, LH. There is a stench that causes me to wonder if some fell, but lovely, saleslady has persuaded yon money grubber to partake in her sample of Hi Karate. It was with only some small interest that I gave notice to his raiment, but to my horror found that he adorned himself in a lime green Leisure Suit. Doth thou not find this an odd choice of garments? Does this fell creature know not how flammable such cloth is when flaming arrows are nearby? Alas, as Gandalf Greyhame hath spoken on many occasions, experience is the best teacher. Thus, if thou doth agree, we will give much due to the wizard's words and allow the lime green LH to discover this by his own wits. Heather, the female also so named The Babe, hath caught our fair Rumil's eye much to the displeasure of his brothers. Haldir is less forgiving of said attention than Orophin who doth not admit it to his older brother, but would care to learn of mating practices of such human females with paint upon their faces. He bid me hasten to add, that he himself had no desire to engage in such for his heart remains in your keeping, but for academic pursuits doth he wish to inquire. From this report, your liege hath set into play a plan worthy of the Woodland King in his thirst for revenge and to smit the enemies of Elvendom. We look to further notices of this. Haldir continues to rest comfortably. He is most dismayed that PJ failed to herald his survival at the Deep, yet he bids you continue to tell your tale for he enjoys being amused by the demise of former boyfriend's disguised as financial advisors. Truly, my lady, he laughs freely for the first time in many days. Pray continue for there is little that gladdens my heart like that of a happy elf. Your Most Humble Servant and Shield Mama, The Karenator

Author's reply

Yes, Precious, keep thy silence. For revenge is a dish best eaten cold and after lo, these many years, LH is about to get what he hath coming to him! He hath been marked as a defiler of maidens among the Wood-Elves and the forces of the Mad Witch. I rejoice that Haldir is feeling better. His presence was missed by all. Assure him that Mr. Greyhame is well aware of the perils of blonde bimbettes to the tender hearts of young elves (save ever for Legolas who is so beset by them that he routinely slays them upon encountering them upon his path). The young ones shall be carefully shepherded. Of Glorfindel, none have concern. He hath too long escaped the wiles of maidens to tremble at the approach of yet another Heather. Prithee, how fareth the little Shire Rat? Humble Scribe to Mr. Greenleaf

daw the minstrel · 20 November 2003 · Chapter 9: The Scientific Research Department of Middle Earth

OMG. I am an academic and you cannot imagine how familiar LH looks. Go Gandalf! I wish a party of horsemen would ride up the mall where I live. Your description of Glorfindel left me with my mouth hanging open, wiping the drool off my chin. "Mr. Findel"- LOL Oh man, I wish the meetings I went to had fruit and bread and cheese and wine at them. Too bad about the wrappings on the food. I wanted to see Orophin and Rumil picking saran wrap out of their teeth. I so look forward to having the dissection team in Thranduil's woods.

Author's reply

Yes, in her checkered past, the Humble Scribe spent time working in the Development Department of a non-profit. She knows full well the machinations of donor stroking. The peasants may drink tap water, but potential donors do get wine! Glorfy in his splendor doth delight us all. I am headed for the nearest cold river myself. Glad you enjoyed the chapter!

Marnie · 18 November 2003 · Chapter 8: Interlude in the Upper Tower

Fabulous chapter! Glorfindel and Elrond are obviously the stand up comedy routine of the epic :) Who knew that Galadriel was widely respected among the elves for her ability to accessorize But I have to agree with Glorfindel that Elrond's in laws aren't *that* bad :) 'Mad witch of the Galadhrim'!

Author's reply

Everything being relative, Galadriel sitting for two weeks in the top of a tree with poor Celeborn being rained upon beneath pales in comparison to having one's throat slit! Yet, Elrond doth have a difficult bed to lie upon. She is not an easy elf to deal with, his mother-in-law. In my eighteenth reincarnation, I would aspire to be Galadriel in a frock.
