You so have a talent for plotting. You know, Rose - I love how you always have Tom talking to his horse.
King Elfwine was not a happy man. Nineteen dwarves killed and the Lord of Ithilien hanging between life and death in the care of his great friend, Gimli, and all on Edoras’ doorstep, so to speak.
I guess he wasn't happy, now was he. I love seeing that kind of stuff in the middle of grimness. Now give 'em all German names and send this off to an agent.
Author's reply
Well that made me laugh out loud! Hah, the answer is German names! love it. I might even try it. But do you realise this tome has about 60 non-canon OF names already, not to mention about thirty canon and original place names - cripes, that's a lot of German.
While I wait for the muses to strike again I might use search/replace and see if the 80000 word beomoth Adagio/Mayflies/Cadenza flies. A fantasy book, oh my.
Thanks for the idea, and the review!
Still chuckling

I just loved the picture of Minuial sitting there in the dark, glow muted, tossing and catching the silver dagger - and Gimli watching her. Well - Minuial and Gimli as friends, ganging up on the unromantic beautiful elf! What fun that could be.
I loved the twins - scared to death that Thranduil's hit squad were after them.
Arwen fighting off sadness - the Rohan party - Tolman - spookily alien Thranduil (very elfy).
In fact, I loved it all. More. Please.

LOL. Thranduil is scary and the twins know it. But Minuial is gaining some respect for their daring and that's good too.
It's interesting that Thranduil sees Legolas's dealings with mortals as destroying him. I suppose he must fear that Legolas is leaving the things he should be doing for people who will only die in a shockingly short time. And actually, he is.
I liked the image of Minuial sitting in Gimli's tent in the dark tossing the dagger in silence. It seemed very elfy.
It's touching that Arwen thinks that "hope had always been her watchword."

A really great ending to a wonderful story. I am still holding out hope that Legolas and his father's March Warden will make a go of it. I enjoyed her very slow awakening to the fact that elves were not the only race who had many things "good" to offer even if they are mortal. :)

'Go away you annoying little person skills'. What a fantastic phrase - made me laugh. And indeed the blond elf would have needed the above in quantity given the mass drooling that seems to happen every time he appears in front of females.
I wonder if that is why he grew so fond of Gimli? Most creatures, male and female, fell for Legolas's charm and wanted to be his friend, but Gimli's hostility meant that he needed to be won.
Author's reply
Well yes, in both my slash and non slash universes that has to be one reason that Leggy pursues Gimli so ardently. That and the fact that the dwarf's personality is so unique, he is such a lovely character to write, tough and soft all at the same time. Oh I could rave for a while but I will restrain myself.
Thanks for your wonderful reviews

I like the way the twins took Minuial to the trees for healing, and the 'shall we edit this?' look. If they want their sister to live, they'd better.
I also liked Legolas helping with Gimli's healing - I know the twins were healers, but no one knows about Legolas. I like this interpretation of him. But poor Throndar - a hero's funeral is always sad.
Jay
Author's reply
Yep, that Min she's pretty scary, but the archer likes a challenge you know!
So sad to say a final good bye to Throndar, and I dunno about Leggy and healing, I like to think of him having the normal amount of magic that elves have as a birthright, he's had a fair opportunity to practise passing that virtue on, owing to his association with these mortals, but he does not see himself as a healer, more as doing what he can to help.
I'm glad you are still enjoying

I continue to greatly enjoy this story--you are such a talented author. You know, you could keep adding on to this story the way you write so well--even if it was about boring everyday things (washing dishes). I know I would keep reading. This means that when you do end the story, I will be looking for your next one (I hope so!!)

I like the masons in Gimli's head - good extended metaphor. Nice to see Tolman back in the frame; he is a splendid hobbit.
Poor Minuial, being left just with the twins, (many might disagree), while Legolas is off succouring Gimli. An unromantic Legolas - it's odd, actually, how the very beautiful are no more likely to be romantic than anyone else, and often the most romantically inclined males are rather less pretty.
Love the 'shall we edit this' look.
Like the way all the races honour Throndor - he deserves it.
Bardor - scared of Minuial - how unreasonable. Perhaps Legolas should tell her - it might help her self-confidence to recuperate.
Author's reply
Ha, I'd be scared of Minuial if I met her! (especially given some of the stuff I do to her, ) Beautiful people do not need to develop any sort of come hither skills, in fact they need to develop, go away you annoying little person, skills, it seems to leave something of a gap in thier empathy development when it comes to matters of the heart. Also I just think it is such a typically male thing to have matters arranged in a nice logical way, and be very startled and upset when the other person wants to change the boundaries, hah.

Oh my! What a loaded question! In answer to your inquiry about what I'd LIKE to see for the wind-up of this little tale of yours.....weeellll...I'd like to see it NOT end!!!! NO????? OK, then definitely a sequel....come on, RS, surely these guys attract trouble like flowers attract bees....really, do some thinking about it, ok? Maybe a plague, or a small skirmish (are the Haradrim still bad to the bone?), or a forgotten curse, or a hurricane...(ummmmm, maybe not a hurricane). As for loose ends....
*something for the hobbit to do (name? name??? :( sorry, brain dead right now)
**what about Legolas and Minuial? Is this a permanent thing...they both seem semi-serious, tho' their views definitely do not mesh. :-)
***what about Arwen's little problem with her (and Aragorn's) mortality...has she come completely to terms with it, or do some doubts still linger?
****Gleowyn's husband....didn't she think he's dead? He wasn't, was he? (I didn't think he was....oooooh, he'd better not be! If he is, then you need to kill Frecern again!!) Anywho, a reunion between those two.
*****what punishment for the hill rebels?
See, warn you I did...many suggestions have I...expecting another chapter AND a new story soon I am (*VLH* :-) very large hint)

Love the late arrivals - twins with hair blowing in the wind, Legolas seeking out Arwen and Minuial - Gimli calling him a daddy's boy. What a good line - just as well they are true friends.
Shame Frecern got away from Gimli - but Legolas heard his cry and deserted Minuial for a bit of action and I just adored the Ris / Legolas interaction - simply great. Nice to see a female dwarf making an impression. However - under the humour the tragedy of Nain's death and the loss of those future children.
I have often thought that it must be - edgy - being too close to warriors waking unexpectedly. That must have been some whack with the jug!
Looking forward to the wind up. And the start of the sequel!
Author's reply
Oh yes, Leggy deserting Min, glad you picked that up - heh, some accounting to be had there I think. The twins love to pose in my head, so it was fun to give them an eye-candy moment of their own and I needed them to be around to help Min when Leggy took off - never underestimate elven strength, Arwen packed a punch, the jug now looks like one of those surrealistic pictures, all flat and twisted!
Sorry about Gim, but he did get his axe to the rat's neck, then the pesky horse went and spoiled it, ha, Ris deserved her revenge tho.
Thanks so much for the review, the trouble is Cadenza is a sequel - do you really think a sequel to the sequel is needed?

Well yes, I so didn't want a cliche ending, but Legolas had built up some points against that man, so I wanted him to have a role, and Ris won the poll in my head of one of the other most damaged.

It's always tempting to comment on the end of the chapter first, so I will. :-) I loved Ris and her avenging of Nain and the interaction between her and Legolas.
There were lots of little details in the chapter that I liked: Elladan drawn to a fire like a moth, for example, or fear staining the air and frightening the war horse. Those were great lines and gave real character to the piece.

RS! It is my very great honor to present to you the DoJtBG Award (Dispenser of Justice to Bad Guys)! *sg (stupid grin, but hey, if you're gonna write about THE elf like that, I can't promise to think straight)*
Hmmmm, a review - *slaps brain back into place*.....Wow! Where to start? Well, I loved the twins on the rooftops of the burning palace...I'm glad they decided to follow the action and get away from the flames tho'...I mean, I know Elrond taught those elflings not to play with fire! :-) And Legolas, leaping to follow the action like a "hart" - what an apt description of the grace and power of an elven warrior in action *sigh*.
Gimli sure can push the elf's buttons, can't he? I thought Legolas was going to deck him for a minute...."Go and do what your daddy told you?"....woooo! But that's Gimli "Tactless", son of Gloin, for you. At least he made amends (sometimes friends can say the harshest things without thinking).
I thought the way Minuial woke up was very much in character for a warrior trained to react to danger...the last thing she remembered was being bopped on the head by some unknown assailant. So the twins tend to her head, and Legolas responds to Gimli's yell to go after that RAT, Frecern. I almost cried at his reaction to seeing Gimli laid out on the ground....squabbles or not, they are such good friends! *sniff*
Yay! Legolas and Ris were able to put that jerk Frecern out of his misery, and settle some old debts in the doing! I felt so sorry for Ris, but Legolas said just the right thing, and I believe made a friend, too....honestly, RS, a little more meat on his bones and he'd make a passable dwarf? ROTFL...*gasp -choke* Not content to do me in with your evil cliffies, you must finish the job with laughter! What a great chapter - lots of action, some giggles, a RAT gets his just desserts, and some really good interaction between your characters! SOOOOOOOOO...what's next, hmmmmmmmm??? ;-)

Kingly Aragorn makes my heart go pitapat. But the burning of Meduseld was just awe inspiring. I particularly liked the line that it burned even without an audience.
I loved the birds landing on Gimli! LOL

Yep, he makes my heart go all wonky too. I think that is why I find it so hard to write the man. I keep going all goey instead of listening to what he has to say. (Listen to me woman, I'm King, shakes me - G)
It always amuses me how we gather to watch a fire as if it needs encouragment, we do the same to the sea - quite indifferent, both.

Wow, I'm gonna give you an award for every chapter, if it will get me another chapter of this story so quickly! I had just finished reviewing ch. 16 when I looked back at the table of contents page and saw this new one! That was really quick, RS, I bow to your muse for goading you on to new heights (or did Greenleaf and Gimli pester you for leaving them behind?) And what's thissssss, my preciousssss....no evil cliffie in sightssesss? The shock alone might do me in.........
A review....ok, Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, Arwen in her beloved's arms, at last.....what a picture, and I'm very glad they found each other! (I just love Mouse's screaming fits....I can just see her *snerk*.) Am really in to endings today...I reviewed the end of the story here, and started a new novel by reading the end first....ah well, whatever! :-)
Back to the beginning - Loved the part where Legolas, Gimli, and Co. catch up with Thranduil and Co. Thranduil is very much the King here - and in charge of these infantile mortals. He's really being somewhat patient, if disgusted and frustrated, too....and worried about his missing people. Nice interaction between him and his son (Be my arms and my legs....bring my people back to me..)
Legolas and Minuial - I tell ya, he's WORRIED about the girl...she's missing and he's starting to freak a little at that news...
Aragorn finds Throndar - *sniffles renew* Even in death, his faithful guard helps his King! *wails*
Great chapter, RS.....still pondering a new award, tho'....can't think of one offhand (brain still numb from reading 2 chapters in one :-) night)....don't hold it against me.....*g*

By the power vested in me as the one most damaged by your talent of writing the never-ending cliffhangers for this story, I hereby award you the EC award for the one most likely to KILL ME! *snerk hehehehehe*
Ah, yes, a review......
Throndar - may I say that I am still sad about poor Throndar, and Arwen's reaction to learning of his fate was portrayed just right. Come to think of it, she has probably known him for awhile (maybe even watched him grow into the trustworthy warrior he was), as this takes place some years after Aragorn is crowned king. What a loyal soldier - "greater love hath no man, that he would lay down his life...." *sob!*
The reappearance of the terrific twosome - :-) *vbsigh* I do love the squabbling that goes on between these two....and you write it well. Gimli is a real grumpy-gills, isn't he? However, Legolas, bless his sweet pesky heart, does seem to bait him continually! *g* Hey, guys, you'd better hurry up before the fighting is over...RS is leaving you behind!!!!
Mouse - a timid youngster (at least she seems young to me), who can scream like a Nazgul, faint very nicely, quiet a screaming babe (they do seem to do it on purpose, my own used to drive me nuts doing that), and manage to find the way out for everyone! Is there no END to this girl's talents? (I loved the way you quickly developed her character...she's great!)
Minuial - OUCH! That had to hurt! Oh how the mighty are fallen.....*g*, and she had worked so d--n hard to find Arwen, too. She's not going to be too happy when she regains consciousness...pounded by a friend, and being carried by *gasp* a man....Valar forbid! Still, perhaps there is a lesson for our Marchwarden in this. She's going to have a sore head...maybe Legolas can soothe her headache (he can soothe my head any time he wants...*slaps self silly to stop hyperventilating). ;-)
Go, Aragorn, Go....Go, Aragorn, go...................
Frecern - what a cowardly creep! He needs a good beating at the very least! *snort* The jerk...the cad...the creep...the---well you know!
Well done, as usual, RS. I loved the beginning where Legolas and the trees greeted the sun with song...*vbsigh and a few bars hummed experimentally*. Your descriptions continue to be vivid, and at times, very poetic. Now that you've won that award, you WILL carry on with the story soooooon, right?

Poor, poor Minuial - felled by an elf, true - but by an elf with a jug in her hand! Then to be carried to safety (hopefully) by a Man, while her queen bears a sword. I like dangerous Arwen - and a fighting Gleodwyn. And isn't it just typical that the soft, squealing, girly nursemaid should be able to silence the baby just like that! - and then save the day by knowing how to get out using the servants' stairs.
Legolas and Gimli had better get there soon, or all they will have left to do is help with the clean up.
I hope Aragorn gets the fun of playing with Frecern - he needs something to help him calm down. He can be cat to Frecern's mouse. Trust that nasty piece of work to bring fire into the equation - and I should imagine Meduseld would burn rather well.
I hope you are already working on the next chapter - I want to know what happens next.
