PIppinfan1988 · 29 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

Oy! It took me a couple of luch times to get through this one, but it was worth it! I liked all the bantering between the friends--and I would swear on the Red Book that I was pretty much mirroring Frodo's reactions while he/we listened to Pippin's tale. LOL, I'm thinking, only Pippin would bring a kitten into a ghost story! It was cool that he was the hero/storyteller in this tale. LOL, I still love Merry's dream sequence in Hammer! Thanks for sharing this! Pippinfan

Author's reply

You are most welcome. This was a hobbit_ficathon challenge and so you may thank Anso for the kitten. We had to include a rose, a candle, a bed, and a kitten in the story. I am sure there were other less-strange ways to do this but you know me, this was what I came up with. LOL Thank you for reading this and for reviewing. Oh, Happy Halloween!

Baggins Babe · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

That was a very creepy story - I'm not surprised Pip succeeded in frightening himself! I did laugh at Frodo, wanting to know what happened to the kitten - I'm always worried about the animals in any story. Brilliant story!

Author's reply

I would have been just like Frodo was in this one too. I always worry about the animals in movies and books. The first time I read LOTR, I practically begged a friend to tell me what had happened to Bill the Pony when they had been forced to leave him outside of Moria! I kept saying, "Just tell me that Bill's all right." LOL Thanks for reading and have a Happy Halloween!

Andrea · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

Great story, G.W.! Pippin is an excellent storyteller and thanks to Merry's insistence he had a chance to show it. He even impressed his older sister. But it's just like Pippin to make a story so creepy that it scares himself ;-) Thank you and happy Halloween to you!

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed Pippin's story. He got off to a rough start but thanks to Merry he did get his chance. I do think that a person or a hobbit can scare themselves under the right conditions and since Pip is extra impressionable I could see him doing just that!

Pearl Took · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

Well done as always!!!! Your stories are a joy to read. Thank you for having Pip do so well that the tweens had to show him some respect. Wonderful!!!!

Author's reply

I think that Pip's natural story-telling ability would win over most any crowd. So glad that you liked this one. Thanks!

Bodkin · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 38: Strange Bedfellows

How did I miss this? Estella is a very brave lass! And I love the reason she mistook the rooms! I wonder if it will make Pippin be tidier for a while - just in case some other lass comes along looking for Merry. “The Merry that holds me now, needs to know where it will lead.” Very perceptive of Estella. Merry and Pippin have both rather lost their taste for casual irresponsibility and grown up. Even if they try to hide it. Very sweet. Very saucy. And Estella dealt quite well with the knowledge that Pippin had been driven to hide under his bed and miss supper after a sight of her - assets.

Author's reply

This was one of my rare attempts at a bit of romance and it wound up with a bit of a comic element in spite of all efforts to keep it serious. Pippin just wouldn't behave! LOL I think that Estella just might have been the one to make the first move with Merry. Merry probably had too much worry and too many serious matters on his mind after the quest. Thanks for reading!

Bodkin · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

Fancy Pippin managing to scare himself! I love Frodo's amusement - and curiosity about the kitten - and Merry and Estella's flirtation. And the way the older tweens patronise Pippin. They'll not get away with that in the presence of Merry and Frodo!

Author's reply

If anyone could scare themselves, I do think it would be Pippin! He did manage to impress the older crowd with his story once Merry stepped in and made them give Pip a chance. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

harrowcat · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

Loved it GW! though I don't much go in for scarey stories. I wanted Frodo to find a kitten and release her on the bed in the middle of the night but then I am an evil minded reviewer! (P.s spotted a couple of typo's tied/tried and wonder/wander) Din't spoil the fun though.

Author's reply

LOL I love your idea of a prank for Frodo to play! If only I had thought of that! Glad you enjoyed this one and thank you for spotting the typo's. I corrected them and I appreciate that touch-up! Thank you for the review also!

Larner · 27 October 2005 · Chapter 39: The Tell Tale Took, A Hobbit Halloween story

Indeed, trust a Took to tell a story that scares himself. And that he didn't want Estella to know is priceless!

Author's reply

I think that since Estella would have been the same age as Pippin's sister Pervinca that Pippin might have had a less than friendly relationship with her at the beginning and then once she began to keep company with Merry, he might have been even less fond of her. I like writing the two of them as having a slightly rocky relationship. LOL It was like Pip to scare himself, wasn't it? Thanks for reading!

SilverMoonLady · 6 August 2005 · Chapter 1: First Impressions

What a lovely and quite perfect beginning:))) “No teeth and a dreadful name. I guess the least I can do is be a bit nice to you while I’m here.” Indeed! LOL!

Author's reply

Glad you enjoyed my take on their first meeting. It has always seemed to me that an eight year old lad would be a bit less than thrilled with the arrival of a new baby. Somehow, I suspect that Pippin had to win him over a bit.

Pipspebble · 4 August 2005 · Chapter 38: Strange Bedfellows

This was just terrific! My favorite? *He tossed the waistcoat at the same chair and missed. It fell to the floor next to one from yesterday and Pippin ignored them both* That is SOOOO Pippin! Wonderful glimpse into the next step of Merry and Estella's relationship. And poor Pippin! Being ordered out of his own room and thinking his cousins were going to have sex. On HIS bed! LOL! Thanks for the giggles. :-)

Author's reply

Glad that you enjoyed it. It's one of my few semi-romantic stories. I don't seem to write romance that often for some reason. Thanks for reading and I am glad that it made you giggle.

pipinheart · 4 August 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

Merry and Pippin were clever, never seen it coming...

Author's reply

Thanks for reading this. Glad you enjoyed it.

pipinheart · 4 August 2005 · Chapter 30: A Sticky Situation

This is cute...Poor Pip he got stung but is plotting revenge. Merry was sure sorry and got an earful from his mother...

Author's reply

Thanks for the review. I am glad that you liked this one.

shana40347@aol.com · 4 August 2005 · Chapter 31: It Helps To Have A List

Now this one is cute. Pippin of all things wonder on what it would be like to be invisible, and has no clue that frodo should ask him...Frodo has a good laugh, cerious as ever is pippin

Author's reply

Glad you enjoyed this. It just came to me one evening. Thanks for reviewing.

SlightlyTookish · 3 August 2005 · Chapter 38: Strange Bedfellows

I adored the beginning of this, with Pippin so awkward and trying to explain himself, and his warning to Merry! Too, too funny. And then the end was very sweet. Another great story, GW! :)

Author's reply

Thank you! I almost didn't move this one over here because I thought it might not work with the others, but it is a Merry and Pippin so I gave it a shot. Glad that you enjoyed it!

Andrea · 3 August 2005 · Chapter 38: Strange Bedfellows

Well, I think this story fits perfectly in here. Your description of Pippin was wonderful, he's still a tweenager and feels a little awkward when confronted with a lass in his bed - and not some lass, but Merry's ;-) And Merry and Estella make the perfect couple. Estella is so sympathetic when it comes to Merry's feelings. "I think that the Merry who used to hold me is holding me now, only now, I think he knows how easily things can be lost and what is really important in our lives." Wonderful, thank you!

Author's reply

Thank you for those very kind words. I am pleased to know that putting this one in with the others was not a mistake. I haven't written much in the way of romance so I wasn't sure how this would go over. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the review!

Larner · 3 August 2005 · Chapter 38: Strange Bedfellows

Very charming! The font was so large I had to scroll back and forth, but it was well worth the read. Poor Pippin--finding a lass in his bed, and then realizing not only is it his bed, but the wrong one! Took a great deal of nerve indeed!

Author's reply

Thanks for going to all of that trouble to read this. Funny thing is, it fits perfectly on my screen. I went in to edit it, and when I read it in both author and reader modes it fits. I am sorry that it was so large on your screen. My talent for formatting leaves a great deal to be desired. LOL Thank you for reading and I am very pleased that you enjoyed it. Oh, and any tips on posting these so they don't look odd would be appreciated.

Hai Took · 27 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

That was absolutely marvelous! Things didn't work out so well for Freddy! Poor guy all he wanted was not to be pranked and he ended up being pranked it what he thought was a safe situation! They were all against him this time, which is perhaps a bit unfair...lol! He certainly had done a good job of remaining unpranked for most of the summer too bad for him it didn't last although it certainly made for a wonderful story! I feel bad for Saradoc as well, he got caught in the middle and he obviously knew someone more than Freddy was involved! Very well thought out I don't know how you managed to think of everyone's parts and not get confused, well done! It was a great read full of plenty of laughs, thank you!

Author's reply

Thank you! I was nearly confused a few times. It all kind of hinged on each thing and so I almost lost my place a time or two. Poor Saradoc got caught in the middle of it all yet again just as he did with Merry's trick with the molassas. I guess it's hard to raise a lad like Merry and not wind up in a mess at times. LOL

Hai Took · 27 July 2005 · Chapter 35: The Garden Gate

Splendid! I loved the way that Pippin, for being too young, went to look after Merry. At least he wasn't sneaking about and didn't get in trouble as well, although I doubt Merry would have let Pippin get in trouble when he really wasn't involved. I liked how you wrote the Maggot family! I would love to see more of them *hinthint* ;) Merry's bad turned out good, saved the Farmer and his family the stolen food and taught Merry a wonderful lesson that I'm sure he'll take with him into the Mastership! The end was a nice touch about Frodo not knowing about Merry's adventures and Merry not knowing about Frodo's well done! It was nice to see where such a seemingly unlikely friendship might have come from.

Author's reply

I enjoyed writing the Maggots and I may just have to use them again in the future now that they are good friends with Merry and Pippin. So glad you enjoyed this one and thank you for the lovely reviews!

Hai Took · 25 July 2005 · Chapter 36: The View From the Bank

LOL! That was great! Pippin certainly dug himself a hole talking about his "old" cousins that way, perhaps he was doing it on purpose? Thanks for the laugh it was wonderful! I liked all those poor children watching them and thinking that they might kill Pippin and planning what they would do if it happened. When the combatants finally realised they had an audience and gave up the fight was great! Merry pretty much put them back where they started with his last comment! Thanks for the fun!

Author's reply

Glad you enjoyed this one. I had fun writing it. Nothing like a mud battle between cousins to draw a crowd is there? Thanks for the lovely review and for reading.

GamgeeFest · 17 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

LOL, Freddy finally gets his own. That prank was classic and is bound to go down in the books of pranks past. At least Frodo saw through it all, and Saradoc wasn't completely fooled. The bit about Pippin making too much sense earlier was cute, and was Pippin through this whole thing. They really knew how to play Freddy, didn't they?

Author's reply

Yes, they gave poor Freddy a taste of his own medicine. You can't play both ends against the middle and you certainly can't enjoy the pranks without winding up in the middle of one. Thanks for the review!

Saoirse · 11 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

LOL. Mayhem! O, GW, I have been MIA for a little bit when it comes to reviewing, but this, lol, *this* really lit up my day. Actually, my week, as I know I am going to be thinking of this for at least another one. I love the whole prank-series and the who-gets-who, who-got-who, look-out-for-who, wool-over-the-eyes atmosphere -- a web of deceit, it kind of reminds me of a mafia is a highly less, kind of cute, not at all fatal, hobbity kind of way - LoL. There are so many pieces of this that I just adored! And this review is going to be ridiculously long as I point out all my favorite parts! (I even wrote them down when I was reading, lol, so I wouldn't forget). Here they are: (in no particular order) 1. 'Pippin Took almost never made that much sense about anything. The lad’s mind just didn’t work in logical ways. Pippin’s thoughts usually shot out in all directions and it was like being caught in the middle of a hale storm' -LOL perfectly described. But, as we now know, highly underestimated. 2. '"You just wait! I'll show him exactly who he's dealing with when he's dealing with Peregrin Took!"' LOL Precisely Pippin in every way. Yah! You er..tell him, Pip! 3. 'Why did all of these pranks always lead to Esmeralda shouting at someone?' LoL. Poor, poor Esme. I can only imagine what kind of havoc this Summer of Mayhem has wreaked on her tempermental Tookish nerves. 4. LoL the bit about Saradoc staring so hard at Freddy that a "hole forming in his head" might be there was great. I could just see Saradoc's glower and Pippin smugly grinning behind him "complaining" about his goats, with Merry and Berilac flanking him, equally as proud. 5.'Apparently goats have little interest in freedom.' LOL. Apparently. 6. The bit when Freddy had a "fleeting desire ... pleasant thoughts right now" was quite chuckle inducing. 7. I loved how Merry called his father 'Doc', how sweet! 8. And Sara's firm end to the whole debacle at the end was priceless, I especially loved how Pippin had to be contrary. Adorable! 9. The part in the beginning with the whole web involving how Freddy really came out the victor with the box prank was wonderful, lol! Freddy really knows how to deal his cards! (Or so he thought, lol). Anyways! What a lovely, well-thought-out, entertaining story about the lads mischevious childhoods! O, and last but certainly not least, you included Berilac! Eep! I just love him for some reason!! :) I'm so glad he was in on it too -- one day I'm going to have to bagder you into writing me a fic focusing on him! Excellent job, GW, lol how delightful! I am going to be giggling about this all day long -- and then some!

Author's reply

WOW! This is such a wonderful review. I thank you so very much and I am thrilled that you enjoyed it this much. I am also glad that you are back. I hope you are writing too. I have missed seeing your posts. I love the idea of a 'hobbit mafia' by the way. I had no idea that Berilac was a favorite of yours. I thought it a good idea to include him in the action partly because he helped Merry with the prank on Pippin. In the first story that I ever wrote I had Merry call his father Doc in an effort to sound more grown up and now I just do it naturally. Sometimes I don't even bother to explain it. LOL This is the first time I have written one of these from Fredegar's POV and so I am glad that you enjoyed it. Thank you again. You have made my head swell a bit.

Bodkin · 11 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

I am rather surprised that the tweens-and-a-teen managed to survive quite so long before Saradoc jumped on them with both feet. And indoor goats! I would have thought Esmeralda would have been rabid at the smell of goats inside her nice clean smial. On the other hand - what clever and evil cousins poor Freddy has. I thought he took it rather well actually, once he discovered that he had been set up. I liked Pippin trying to wangle out of the 'legal' agreement. Sharp as a tack. I wonder if Saradoc, somewhere under his frustration, was shaking his head in anticipation of what kind of adults these will make. Such schemers.

Author's reply

I am very sure that Saradoc was shaking his head by the time the summer was over. I sort of thought of these little tales as the kind of pranks that kids play on one another at a summer camp. I am guessing that the Shire didn't have summer camp. LOL So I had a sort of gathering of lads at Brandy Hall. Pip would have to try to use the power of the Thain as he is a Took among Brandybucks. Thanks for reviewing!

Larner · 10 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

This is indeed poetic justice, and for all of them. Loved the goats all over the place. Figured out that Merry and Pippin were both intent on getting Freddy in trouble, but had no idea Berilac was in on it, too. LOVELY!

Author's reply

Freddy has the satisfaction of knowing that it took three of them to set him up. LOL Glad you liked it. Thanks for the review and for reading this one.

PIppinfan1988 · 10 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

"This document makes it known to all present that each of you attended this meeting and that each of you understand the consequences of further mayhem,” Holy moly! This reminds me of being in the Navy! :-P LOL...you had me going throughout the entire story--I was convinced that Freddie would succeed as a freelance double agent, but towards the end I could...lol--"smell it" coming! LOL Great story! Pippinfan

Author's reply

That's an image; a hobbit navy. It would have to be nearly all Bucklanders I suspect but Saradoc would make an excellent Captain. They could never stay out for very long though because they would run out of food. LOL Glad you liked this and expect an email soon.

Armariel · 10 July 2005 · Chapter 37: Strike While the Iron is Hot

how cute.......gotta love that Pippin, wot? LOLOL

Author's reply

Pip's a real charmer even when he's up to mischief. Thanks for reviewing and I am glad that you enjoyed it!
