· Chapter 41: Pippin's Night Out
I was led here by slightly tookish because of Marigold's latest challenge. I must say, that was a perfect start into the new day. Poor Pippin! This certainly wasn't his lucky day.... or should I say night? I wonder if he told the cousins about Tulip though.
Thank you very much for this! :)
Author's reply
Thank you for reading it and for reviewing it! This is the naked hobbit story that caused me to tell Marigold that 'everyone should have a naked hobbit story!' I never dreamed that she would take me seriously. LOL I was trying to encourage her to continue writing a naked hobbit story that she was working on and the result is apparently her latest challenge. I can't wait to see what people write for it! Glad you enjoy this story. Hope you have a good day!

That's a delightful little tale. As charming as toddlers can be, they can also be mean....
Poor Frodo! Well, he didn't want to listen and that's the price to pay :)
A wonderful ending. Great to see the purse is still valued, now probably more than ever.
Author's reply
Thank you so much for reading and I am very glad that you enjoyed this one. Toddlers can be a handful and I imagine that Pippin was indeed a handful! LOL

Merry is proved right about the bossy and light-fingered little Took - but no-one can say that he doesn't value what he ... acquires.
Lovely story - I think I especially like Esmeralda's unmovable belief in the charming innocence of baby Pippin. Yes, right!!
Author's reply
Acquires is a very polite word for it! LOL Glad you enjoyed this one. I always enjoy writing Esmeralda and most of the time I have her knowing far more than she does in this tale. In fact, she is usually ahead of the game. This once I let Merry be the one with all of the answers. I figure that every now and then even Esmeralda would be taken in by a cute face. Thanks for reviewing!

GW, how could I ever get tired of this wonderful series! This is such a cute story. You really capture the mischief in Pip's nature and it's quite obvious it started from the day he was born! I love the reactions Merry has to his young cousin and the way that Frodo gave in to Pippin just like Merry said he would. And Esmerelda's reactions are so genuine. She didn't have a clue. It seems Pip knew what was going on though and the way he stuck out his tongue at his cousins showed what a keen little manipulator he already is! The ending really wraps up this tale nicely. Thanks for a very entertaining look at Pip's childhood.

So very pleased that you enjoyed this and thank you for taking the time to review it. This series of stories has gone on far longer than I would have imagined when I wrote the first one. I have no idea where they keep coming from but I do thank you for reading.

This was perfect. LOL, I remember some other routines of Bill Cosby's that you might be in, wink, wink. You have such a way with baby Pippin, and young, saucy Merry and Frodo--gotta love him! You had me laughing--and it sure felt good to laugh today. Thank you!

This was so, so special!! Pippin was so very Pippin. I love your Frodo *and* Merry--Sam no less. Absolutely wonderful, G.W. Beautifully written, my heartstrings were pulled taut, and the last bit was awesome. I truly enjoyed every word of this lovely tale. Thank you. :-)

By the time I read your email I had posted the second story and so I wasn't sure which one you were in the middle of. LOL Glad you enjoyed this one. I just liked the idea that Bilbo had stretched the truth in Frodo's case and I could hear Pippin telling both stories as well. Thank for for this lovely review!

He clutches it to his cheek and rubs the suede against his face and smiles, tears drying on his chubby cheeks. “Tank yoo,” he says in a squeaky little voice. He then gives me a warning look and says, “Mine.” just to let me know that I won’t be getting it back and then proceeds put the drawstring into his mouth and suck on it.
LOL, that was adorable! Well, probably not for Frodo and most definetly not while Pippin was screaming. I've forgotten what a pain kids at that age can be. I can well imagine Pippin doing something like that. And Merry was just being a brat! If I had been Frodo, I would have strangled him. And Esme, coddling poor, injured, abused Pippin. :) At least he kept the purse and it will be a nice little memento of Frodo. :)
Author's reply
I always seem to put Frodo in the middle of these things and I really do owe him a story where he wins out. LOL I will have to give that some thought because I have tortured him quite a bit lately. Good thing Merry and Pippin out grew all of that. LOL I look forward to your Cosby-inspired story too!

This was lovely - I suspect even I would have given in to Pippin, the shameless little manipulator. I loved spoilt Pip and jealous Merry and hapless Frodo wilting under Esme's stern gaze. Not to mention a little faunt with bells on his trousers - too cute!
The end was perfect - so Pip kept that purse 'because it belonged to someone special.' Oh, and Merry was right - Pip does have it coming to him!
Author's reply
Yes, I think Merry will get even with Pip by telling this story often. LOL The jingle bells are my take on the tiny bells that people used to put on children's shoes only with a little hobbit faunt there wouldn't be any shoes so... So glad you enjoyed it and thank you for reviewing!

This is wonderful, GW! I love spoiled faunt Pippin and jealous Merry and long-suffering Frodo. I had a spoiled younger cousin just like that and she always got her way too. LOL! And I love that Pippin kept and used the coin purse through the years. I'm sure it's the same purse Pippin brought with him on the Quest and kept his pipes in. I love that scene where he mentions the "treasure or two" he keeps close by. Now I'll think of Frodo's coin purse as one of the treasures :)
Author's reply
When I was writing this I thought of mentioning the pipes, but decided to go with toads, marbles and rocks instead. LOL I am sure this was the same purse though, or at least it was in my universe.
As to Pippin being spoiled, I do figure that he had to be. He just wasn't ruined by all of the attention because Merry and Frodo and other older children set him straight when he was older but at three I do think he must have run things his way. I also think that Merry might not have wanted 'his Frodo' to pay so much attention to 'the Pip Squeak'. Besides, Merry did try to warn Frodo. LOL
Thanks for reading and for starting Wee_hobbits too! I love your new site!

Wonderful! I just love these one-shots you write. Pip always manage to charm everyone and Merry and Frodo do their best to keep up with him. :D It was very enjoyable to see that Pippin actually used that purse too.
Author's reply
I could just see Pippin storing things in that purse as a small child and all the while Frodo seeing it and being amused by it all. Seems this time Merry was the only one who knew what was going to happen in the end. Thanks for reviewing and I plan to stop over after work and read the new chapter of "Crickhollow". I am loving that one!

GW, I love you! You just reach inside my brain and find just the thing that will make me laugh uproariously, and sniffle sentimentally all at the same time! I have no idea how you do that, but really--it's wonderful!
Merry snickers at me. “You’ll see,” he says. “The Pip Squeak always gets his way.”
“Why do you call him that?” I ask in amusement.
“Because he squeaks when he talks. Because he’s little. Because he runs through the smial yelling pip, pip, pip ‘cause that’s what he thinks his name is,” Merry offers. “He can’t say Peregrin and so he just says Pip. Ask him his name. He’ll tell you. He can’t talk very well but he chatters his own nonsense constantly.”
I smile at the child who is struggling with the drawstring of my coin purse and muttering to himself. I say, in that sappy voice that folks use when speaking to tiny children, “What’s your name jingle bells?”
He continues to stare at the coin purse but he says, “Pip-pip-pip-in squee.”
Merry snickers.
“You almost have him calling himself Pip Squeak,” I say trying to look disapprovingly at Merry. It is very hard to do this while Merry is looking so proud of himself.
“It’s better than jingle bells,” Merry says.
Of all the stories on how Pippin got his nickname, *this* has got to be both the funniest and the most logical!
And the part at the end? Aaawww...*sigh*
And I'll bet Merry has both wives giggling and sniffling before he's through with the telling...
Author's reply
Now, I finally know where these stories come from! Inside Dreamflower's brain! I knew I was getting them somewhere but had no idea where exactly. LOL So glad you liked it and you do say such sweet things!
I am so glad that you enjoyed my take on how Pippin got his name. Believe me, it wasn't easy to come up with a new verison of that one as so many folks have done it brilliantly before. I think nicknames just happen. Most of the ones I have ever had have been the result of my actions rather than planning or a teasing remark of some sort. I decided to let Pippin provide the start of it and Merry to grab onto it and make it stick. I always like them as a team effort anyway so this fits for me.
In my last couple of fictions I have let Frodo and Pippin tell stories so I decided that Merry needed a story to tell also. I am sure you are right and that he did a wonderful job with this one and then maybe he moved on to "Jingle Bells" and completely ruined Pippin's dignity!

Why thank you so much. I can't help it. I enjoy the pre-quest writing more than the rest for some reason. I am glad that you enjoyed it. I think part of the reason I like to write them as children is because Frodo was still happy then. Thank you for reviewing!

Bravo! Bravo!! Bravisimo!!!

I am glad that you enjoyed it. I was in the mood to write a bit of 'little hobbits' and this one came to me. This time I let Pip get the better of both older cousins. That last bit didn't come to me until I'd reached the end and thought I was through then it occured to me, 'What if Pippin not only kept the coin purse, but actually continued to use it when he was all grown up?' It was fun to think about the various things that he might have put into it as a child. Thanks so much for the lovely review. I am looking forward to your next story.

His little hands reaching toward me as he kicks his feet in an effort to escape Esmeralda’s hold. This one is going to be a great deal of trouble once he gains some size. None of us will be safe after that.

I loved this. Especially, I think, the idea of Pippin keeping Bilbo's secret - and the bond it made between Frodo and Pippin.
The picture of Pippin sitting there in his new weskit, telling stories that carefully include the need for a rope to prevent the bucket braining the victim is a delightful one. As is Frodo sitting back and remembering the past while surrounded by those who love him.
Author's reply
I like Frodo and Pippin stories and there aren't as many of those as there are Merry and Pippin or Merry and Frodo. I also figured who better to pass Bilbo's story to than a Took? LOL Thanks so much for reading!

Wonderful!!!
This is just so warm and heartfelt. I love that Pippin never forgets to mention the rope, even though he gave that to Frodo's prank and left his own a disaster.
“I will take the secret to my grave,” Pippin said dramatically.
“I know you will,” I said. “But please don’t take it there any time soon."
I love that exchange between Frodo and Pippin. And I love Pip being so proud of his new waist coat.
Excellent!!!!
Author's reply
Thank you! Pip was so upset that he might have hurt his Aunt with that bucket that he just had to correct Frodo's story and I think he knew how amusing his was just the way it had happened so he enjoyed leaving it alone. LOL
As to the waistcoat, I could see Pippin being impressed with a grown-up gift. I decided that once the travelers were back from the quest, his older cousins were likely to treat him as an adult even if others sometimes forgot. I could see Pippin being very proud of that. Thanks for the lovely review!

"Bilbo also enjoyed blaming my failure on Lobelia. He liked to blame Lobelia for anything that he could and so this pleased him to have something new that he could dislike her for."
LOL! I can very well imagine that!
Not only Pippin and Bilbo, but also Frodo is a very good storyteller. Who else would have done the trick to keep young, talkative Pippin quiet for such a long time ;-)
So, Frodo didn't have a rope either? That's funny. I like it, that Pippin always mentions the rope in his version of the story, so that other lads (or lasses, who knows?) will be on the safe side.
Frodo can be sure that he will never be forgotten in the Shire. For Pippin will pass the story on to his children, and so it will be told for long times to come. And no one will ever know what really happened!
Thank you, G.W.

Glad you enjoyed this one and I thank you for the review. I don't think anyone who knew him could ever forget Frodo.
