· Chapter 8: The Whole Story...
The Rest of the Story is a perfect title for this story. Our more lax customs of reading in the bath would be seriously more risky in Middle Earth during Frodo's time as books were hand copied and I imagine the materials were proportionally more costly, too.
What I love about this tale is the way Bilbo deals with Frodo's disobedience as naturally, as calmly as a cloud drifting by. No yelling, grudge holding, guilt-making, harsh punishment. Bilbo is kind and specific “you will remember not to bathe with my books, won’t you?”
“Then you could tell me how it ends..."
"I doubt that my telling it to you would help you to remember not to bathe with books." Wonderful parenting. Bilbo's a natural!
Another copy of that book by JoJo Overbank would indeed be a Lost Treasure because it's plausible to think only one of them was produced in the first place given the lack of literacy among most working class hobbits.
This lesson will serve our book loving Frodo well. He won't risk dunking books as we don't drop ebooks in water--though it won't be long before that precaution won't be necessary.
We are so fortunate that you took the initiative to write these stories when your muse was still whispering Hobbity nothings in your ear.

Too funny, lol! Poor Sam in misery! I suppose the only thing that would come between a hobbit and his food would be bad cooking. For a minute there I thought for sure Sam was going to suddenly divulge his undying (pardon the pun, lol) love for Miss Tulip.
Is this the same Tulip that later on in years does a lot of frolicking in the tool sheds with lads? =:-)
Author's reply
I don't know how I missed this review earlier. LOL Guess I must have been asleep or something.
I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner.
This is a different Miss Tulip. I must be running out of flower names. : )

i had forgotten this one; buck and fetchit and the tall tree drawing.
suggest to bilbo: he could teach frodo how ladders are made out of trees by making two steps on each page?
Author's reply
Thank you so much for the review on this one. It's always fun when an older story gets a new review.
I shall gladly pass your suggestion on to Bilbo. : )

Poor Sam! But his dear heart is in the right place. *hugs him and also Frodo and Bilbo for their care*. I will also say Poor Gaffer for what he's in for. *shudders*
Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
I think Sam always tries to do the kind thing when it comes to other people. I could just see him doing this sort of thing and believing it was the only thing a mannerly hobbit could do.
Thanks for reading and I'm sure the Gaffer will survive and perhaps be a bit wiser for the experience. : )

“No, I think I’ll give the rest of them to Hamfast Gamgee and see if he can manage to be grateful for them,” Bilbo grinned.
*Grins*
Oh my, I agree with Bilbo that the Gaffer needs a lesson or two, but this will be a VERY hard lesson!
Just a thought: If someone gave Tulip Grubb a good recipe, her cooking might improve.
Author's reply
A good recipe might go a long way *if* she is able to follow the instructions. I know people who can turn a good recipe into a disaster. LOL I sort of think of this OC, Tulip Grubb as that sort of cook; well-intentioned but just not good at baking.
Thanks so much for the lovely review.

· Chapter 14: Scary Biscuits
Hmmm. Bet there weren't any onions in those biscuits.
This was so funny, I laughed at several points. The dog is looking at me funny. I was reminded of a delightful character (I think her name's Dotty) in a book series I read some time ago. She was infamous for her cookery, to the point that the locals had a name for the malady that followed eating her food. I think it was "Dotty's Collywobbles" though I could be remembering wrong.
Some things, like onions, do improve upon longer acquaintance. Some things do get better as you go on. Life experience teaches that, alas, not all things respond to this idea. I've read *published* books where I kept reading because I was hoping the author--who showed promise, rather like a sparkle in the dark wall of a diamond mine--would get past the muddled beginning and it would get better. Bleah. There are fanfic writers (yourself included) who can write rings around some of the published writers whose books I've suffered through. I don't have time for that kind of nonsense now. I'm reduced to reading by personal recommendation, or because a book is on an academic reading list, which takes some of the adventure out of it.
I don't know why, but I got a flash of Sam and Frodo toiling through Mordor, and Sam chirping, 'I don't know, Mr. Frodo, but that if we just stick it out a little further, it'll get better... p'rhaps there's a garden with a spring, just around that corner there...'
And come to think of it, the irony of Frodo receiving the Ring as a gift, years later, just hit me.
Author's reply
Oh, thank you so much for this lovely review. It means all the more since I have always been a big fan of your stories. I still count "At the End of His Rope" as one of my favorite all-time reads.
Dotty sounds very much like Tulip! LOL
I do think that Sam is that rare personality that tries to find the good in things and you're right. It was a dreadful irony that Frodo received the Ring as a gift. *shudders*
Thank you again, for reading and reviewing.

Oh, dear! What was in those biscuits?
Author's reply
I don't want to think about that. : )
Then again, some people can take perfectly innocent ingredients and make the worst meals completely by accident. I fear Tulip is one of those folks.
Thank you for reading.

This is adorable! I love it all, from Frodo's tree-climbing dog to Bilbo's amusement at his cousin's imagination and his well-concealed horror at finding that Frodo used all of his fine, expensive parchment to draw parellel lines on it! What a wonderful story, GW. :)

ROTFL!!!
That was great, G.W.!
Bilbo might have had not much experience with children, but he treats them in the right way, which may be different, but far more effective - and funny.
"Do you understand?"
Frodo blinked and shook his head. “No. What’s a trance-gressum? You said you could look over mine but I don’t think I have one.”
LOL! To be honest, I didn't know that word either. But now I do. It's not a charcoal stick ;-)
However, the best part was when Frodo offered to draw a ladder! Just great!
Author's reply
Thank you! I hadn't posted one to this series in a while so I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The bit with the trance-gressum was one of the silly parts that I love to put into these things. I'm so glad you enjoyed that.
For some reason ladders tend to work their way into my stories. It used to be puzzle boxes and now it's ladders and sheep. Who knows?
Thanks for reading!

You do such a beautiful job of getting inside the heads of an old, experienced hobbit and a small child.
Impeccable timing, as always.
I was wincing, wondering if Frodo was drawing on some map or painstakingly translated Elvish or something. Glad it was "only" expensive, blank parchment.
I have just such an energetic, enthusiastic small hobbit, and yes, they can be a bit ruinous when their imagination kicks into high gear. Whew.
Glad Bilbo has an understanding of sorts with the lad.
Author's reply
Well, hello, Lindelea! Hope things are good in your corner of the Shire. Thank you so much for the lovely review. I was glad the idea to draw on Elvish translations or maps didn't come to little Frodo. It would have been much harder for Bilbo to remain calm about that.
Hope all of your small hobbits are doing well and thank you for reading!

So Bilbo keeps books behind the sofa. Trying to neaten up before visitors, perhaps?
I was relieved to learn that Frodo had taken *blank* parchment to draw on. I was rather imagining -- and perhaps Bilbo was too -- that Frodo might have appropriated some scroll on loan from Lord Elrond, or a priceless Baggins family tree (a long tree of another kind).
Author's reply
I can imagine Bilbo keeping books everywhere! LOL
I know what you mean. Frodo could well have decided to draw on anything. Imagine Bilbo having to write to Lord Elrond and explain who a dog in a tree got on the back of one of his scrolls!
Thank you for reading this!

I like Belladonna's attitude! I wish for adventures, not potentially soul-destroying ones like Frodo's or frightful ones like Bilbo's but life on my own, just writing which would be a great adventure! Thank God for Bilbo's adventure though because our lives would be a lot more dull without his!

Hi!I have just read your Baggins series and I wanted to thank you for sharing it with all of us Bagginses lovers. I love the stories about the Shire, (pre-Quest Shire) and though I like stories about Bilbo and Frodo, I can't usually find some good stories about them, so these fics have been quite a revelation for me. It's wonderful to read about our favorite hobbits like this. I specially loved this chapter because we can see the relationship between the three cousins and it's so sweet and lovely I just had to tell you. Thank you so much! I'm going now because I want to read your other fics (grin)
See you soon!
