Ooo, this is good. You handled the dream very well. It made sense. Now that's got me thinking about the long-term affects it's going to have on poor Merry. Very few have ever written about his dreams about this insident. Of course, I'm always wondering about my sweet Pippin. How is he going to be affected by this event? You're doing "creepy" quite nicely. Connie B.

Shirebound, This is just BRILLIANT! I am just loving your descriptions...and your take on the whys and wherefores of this particular part of the book. SO many questions it brings up (and never answers) - thanks for tackling some of them. I love that the wight seems to think they are soldiers of some kind. I suppose that he can't fathom that simple devotion (rather than militant training) drives these small ones to protect Frodo. Wonderful!
girlofring · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 3: In the Barrow
again you have intrigued me with this story. "Apparently" is right. The ceremony description was breathtaking and am finding myself wanting to read that chapter of FOTR again, but your thoughts are just a bit more detailing and with depth I am sure if J.R.R. Tolkien were alive would just have to absoloutely have to agree with and be intrigued as well. Here's looking to your next posting.
Anso the Hobbit · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 3: In the Barrow
This is as if Tolkien had written it himself! Such detail and so true to the story! I love that how you explained how Merry got his thoughts that made him say those strange things when waking up and the detail about their clothing and the things he found in them - like the key to the gate. Chillingly Brilliant!
Anso the Hobbit · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Oh, this is so exciting and scary and viivd! I can almost feel the chill here I sit safe and warm. Excellent, Shirebound! Off to the next chapter!
illyria · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 3: In the Barrow
It's getting creepier and creepier, but better and better. The details of the wight's mind, how he analyzed the hobbits and tried to classify them, understand them in his own terms, very fascinating! And the way he judged the hobbits, to determine whether they're worthy of being sacrificed, and the ritual itself, which explained why the hobbits woke up wearing jewelries, are extremely well-written, inventive, and compelling. I love the way you laid out everything here: why the wight kept Frodo untouched, why Merry was having dreams. This chapter is simply brilliant!
Iorhael · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 3: In the Barrow
What would the barrow do with Frodo then? Brr!
Budgielover · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
How wonderful and original to think that the hobbits were deliberately trapped by the barrow-wights! Your description of the wight's use of fog to separate and confuse the hobbits was terrifying; you capture their cold-bloodedness frighteningly well. And to see the to-be Ring-bearer from a wight's view was amazing. This single chapter answers several questions that most of us never thought to ask. I'm looking forward eagerly to more.
Budgielover · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Ah, I have waited for a quiet time in which to savor this. I am delighted to see you take on darker themes, yet still retain that uniquely 'shirebound' flavor. The opening paragraphs were beautiful, lyrical, disturbing and foreboding. I was almost relieved to see our dear hobbits again, and be swept up into their inclusive, comfortable family circle. I loved how Pippin's eyes shine at the thought of ghosts, and how he inches closer to Merry. And how you end the chapter on a dark note. This will be a wonderful story, I know it.
illyria · 18 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
*shivers* How did you get the Wight's mind so chillingly well? How did you perceive his malicious devices in such detail? The way you describe the Wight shaping and molding the fog is frighteningly fascinating. It's getting more and more spooky here. But the memory ("I followed my nose...") made me smile. Hobbits! What would we do without them! :)
Soledad · 14 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Interesting. I can't remember ever having read a story concerning the Barrow-wights - and I used to read a lot. Looking forward for more.
Inkling · 14 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
And the plot thickens, along with the fog… I especially like the parts from the wight’s POV—you’ve actually managed to give it a personality! Nice how it senses Frodo’s courage and leadership: “Bearers of Power were not cowards, and could be most formidable in their will and strength.” It doesn’t know the half of it yet, does it?
Jeodo Brandybuck · 12 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Oooh, Shirebound... You're one of my favorite authors, and once again, you don't disappoint! I can't wait for the next installment! Thanks for a scary, creepy, (and once again,)thrilling story. Jeodo Brandybuck
GamgeeFest · 12 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
This is fascinating! You certainly have me spellbound, wondering what this wright has in store for our hobbits, and why it didn't bind Frodo in sleep. That's some very clever fog, to absorb and displace sound like that. :)
Dreamflower · 12 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
This is just as powerful and creepy as the first chapter, and goes a long way to explaining how the hobbits were trapped. I had always thought it must be more than merely fog and disorientation, but the way you describe it...*shiver*.
Breon Briarwood · 12 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Eeeee! Not a good story to read late at night when you're alone! But, other than that, I really love what you're doing with this. It's creepy!
PIppinfan1988 · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
I love this--I usually passed over this part with just a quick read, but you have filled in the nooks here with wonderful finesse! So eeries... This is fantastic--a hobbit's ghost story! Keep up the great work (as usual)! :-) Pippinfan
Larner · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
I can see the fog and the confusion on their faces. Good use of language, excellent dialogue; very evocative. Am loving it.
Elf Friend · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Wow, just as powerfully written as the first chapter! This story gives me the shivers...I need to put on something warmer!! I've always wondered what this scary barrow things are and it's interesting to see things from your point of view. I'm eagerly waiting for the next chapter!! :)
Elf Friend · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Wow. This story is absolutely brilliant! Such a powerful beginning--it drew me right in and I couldn't stop reading! I must get to the next chapter! ^^ It's so nice to read a story like this; no one has touched on this subject and this is extremely well-written. Keep it up!! :)
Elendiari22 · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Yay, you updated! This is great, I love creepy stories. The wight is very chilling, and if you play the cards right you could even make him pitiable. That could be an interesting aspect, if you choose to go that way. Anyway, this is great, and I can't wait to read more!
Andrea · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Imagining a Barrow Wight, who controls the very air makes me shudder! That reminded me of a picture by John Howe, I once saw. If you like to see it, you may visit his website www.john-howe.com and search for Barrow Wight. Frodo looks a wee bit to young, but the Barrow Wight is great! BTW, I really like your Frodo. He's such a brave hobbit!
Connie B. · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
This is great! I guess I forgot to review the first chapter. This is one of the most interesting points for me in the whole book. I love this part and the scene with Pippin and the Palantir. I hope you're going to go into what is happening to each of them, and not just Frodo. Merry at least has one creepy dream, and I assume the others have them, too. He just happens to be the only one to either remember it, or the only one to talk about it. I just love the cold chills this story is giving me. Keep it up. Thanks. Connie B.
aprilkat · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Somehow I missed it when the first chapter came out! So glad I saw this. You are doing a superb job of describing how the wights capture the Hobbits and why. I particularly like the constant power and "presence" of the Witch King, since he will haunt Frodo's steps and dreams from now on and will affect each of the Hobbits personally. The description of HOW the wight wove his spell over the Hobbits is thoroughly believable and makes total sense. You have put a lot of good thought into this. Also, your descriptions and shifting povs are skillfully done - not an easy task!
