I hope they can talk this all over w/ strider later. I really like your Aragorn and hobbit interactions.
cpsings4him · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Oh! This is so good, Shirebound! I know you won't believe me when I say it, but you seem to be as good at "dark" as you are at "fluff" - and that's saying something! "There would be no need to weave a sleep spell for this fourth and most special one -- not yet; the freezing touch of grave and foul craft had temporarily drained warmth and thought, rendering him senseless." *shivers* Wonderful!
SlightlyTookish · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Ooh, great chapter! That fog is so terrifying. And I love how you show the wight's perspective. I can't wait to see what happens next :)
Lily the Hobbit · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
This story is marvellous! I'm anxious to see what is going to happen. You certainly have bound me. :)
Aratlithiel · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
You know what's odd about stories like this? I KNOW they get saved, I KNOW everything turns out all right but still, I find myself chewing my nails throughout the chapter and then screaming, "OMG, she's just going to leave me THERE?!" Very well-told, love. You've got such incredible atmosphere going here and the sense of Doom is almost palpable. This fic is SO COOL!
Sandy K · 11 February 2005 · Chapter 2: Snared
Creepy! Now you've got me "Spellbound!" I can't wait for the next chapter.
Pearl Took · 8 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
I meant to read this a while ago and the notice for it got lost in the shuffle. This is off to a perfectly chilling start. I'm eager to see where your Master's touch takes this.
Inkling · 4 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
OK, I couldn’t resist—your other stories on my “to read” list will just have to wait a bit longer. This just sounded too interesting…and for once I’d like to review a WIP! I’ve always found the Barrow-Downs chapter one of the most mysterious, creepy and fascinating in LOTR, and am thrilled that you’re writing about it—and that you’ve clearly done your appendices homework, too! This exchange conjured up for me the strangest mental image of Pippin as Winnie-the-Pooh: “‘That was wonderful,’ Pippin said, patting his stomach contentedly…‘Silly Took,’ Frodo said fondly.” Wasn’t Christopher Robin always calling Pooh ‘silly old bear’? From there it’s not much of a stretch to ‘hobbit of very little brain’—something I can just imagine Gandalf calling Pip! I wonder what reward a Barrow-wight desires?
illyria · 4 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Oh, Janet, this is simply bone-chilling and ominous! I actually gasped when the POV shifted to that of the barrow wight's, and he...*it* was sensing The One Ring! And the way the wights send and receive messages through the elements (the earth, the mist) is brilliant and effectively spooky! I also love Frodo and Merry telling Pip how they got to know the story of the old kingdoms of the North, and how with Pip around no one can stay somber for long. And as always, your way with cliffhangers made me yearn for MORE! SOON! :) What a fantastic fic, Janet. Thanks so much for giving me the link to it.

Oh, this looks good! Nice and creepy! Can't wait for more.
Hai Took · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
*shudders* I love the way you described the thoughts of the barrow-wights, described them period reallyt. The frist bit and the last bit in this chapter was really creepy, I'm glad all of the lights on on still ;) The bit about the wights feeling that the Witch-King was back and searching gave me shivers! I like the way you write Frodo. That he would always be a sourse of information and all. Looking forward to more!
Anso the Hobbit · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Now, if this isnt creepy... :) You`ve sucked me in and I can almost feel the chill of the barrow. I am very eagerly waiting for more of this. Booo! Sorry, couldn`t resist. :) A very, very exciting start!
T-Man · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Superb introduction. Really creepy. Look foward to the next chapter
pebbles66 · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Ooooh, very creepy. I can't wait for more!
Andrea · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
That was great! You are very good at writing angsty stories. I have never thought of the possibility, that The Ring might have attracted the Barrow Whight. It's so easy - and absolutely logical. As Frodo would say: Shirebound, you're a marvel! Please continue!
Lindelea · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Excellent! Up to your usual high standard, or perhaps even better. I love such turns of phrase as you employ here: as the crow flies, from his house north to the Great East Road that would take them to Bree -- but the hobbits were not crows, and their ponies were not flying ...and all the little touches that add richness and reality to the telling. Frodo's admission that they weren't actually supposed to be listening to ghost stories. Pippin shivering and drawing closer to Merry. Very well done, and looking forward to more.
melilot hill · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Yay, a new story! Great first chapter, can't wait for the rest :)
Iorhael · 2 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
I've always loved angsty, thrilling stories, you know that? And now I have you to write that kind of things. I love this!
Sandy K · 1 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
I've got chills! You hooked me from the first line. Eagerly waiting the next chapters.
Nilmandra · 1 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Shirebound, I've been looking forward to this story! I am glad you are posting it. Already you have made the mood appropriate, with the thoughts of the wights and their history preparing us for what drives them. I like how they sense the power that Frodo carries, and are drawn to it, just as their dark lord and kings would have been. I look forward to seeing where you go with this!
PIppinfan1988 · 1 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
I have been waiting a LONG time for someone to write about the barrow-wights! And you're just the author to do it! Most excellent--I'll be back for more. :-) Pippinfan
Aratlithiel · 1 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Oh, sweetie, I KNEW this was going to be good. And you've started out gang-busters. I love the history, entwined with imagination and the motivations of the wights. Really, really excellent and I can't wait to see more! Thank you so much for making sure I don't miss this. I'm very intrigued and hooked already!
Larner · 1 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
Very well written and described. Certainly has caught my attention, and I can't wait to read more.
Auntiemeesh · 1 February 2005 · Chapter 1: On Dangerous Ground
I always love your fluffy bunnies, but I really do love these darker, creepier stories as well. This one is looking quite interesting. Tolkien left out so many things. I'm glad you're taking up the mantle of trying to find an explanation for the events at the barrow, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this. :)
