Nilmandra · 6 April 2005 · Chapter 12: Chapter Twelve: Aldamir

So many good things in this chaper, Karen. Poor Aldamir can't even get any peace in the bath. I would offer to hold his towel, but I appear to be too late. What I liked especially well is how you showed Aldamir's anger. He got it under control, but then found himself out of his league in talking to Elenna. I enjoyed their argument though - she failed to see that if A is true, and person 1 says A is true and person 1 says A is not true, they cannot both be right. A little logic breakdown. Then Aldamir has his own logic breakdown, by trying to use logic when emotions are clearly confused! I do like that his parents came to comfort him, and their bond was still strong enough to absorb his pain and strengthen his heart. Very nicely shown...and first person POV made it very emotionally impactful.

Author's reply

Aldamir said that he bathes daily and would welcome you to hold his towel anytime you'd like. :>) You're absolutely right that logic went south in their argument. Elenna was offended on behalf of her friend (and on her own behalf and her judgment) and Aldamir was offended on behalf of his warriors. They ended up arguing over who was honorable instead of what the issue was. Funny, but that's the way most arguments turn out. They disintegrate into something that doesn't even resemble what the true issue is. I think the parent child bond is strong. Even with adult children. And Aldamir was at such a low point that he was open and willing to receive their comfort. Oh, the pain of heartbreak. He and Elenna learned some hard lessons here. Some time might be needed before they can start again, but lessons learned will not become an issue next time. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing and for the kind words about the POV. I'm so pleased that you felt it worked! Karen

Well, Elenna appears to be a bigger ninny than I thought possible. My respect for Aldamir's self-control has tripled,no, quadrupled. Not only has he refrained from crushing Calith beneath his soles like the slug that he is, but he showed remarkable restraint with Elenna as well. If I were him, I would have grabbed her by the neck and shaken her like a rag doll. I really thinks he deserves someone better, but love can be so blind. As for Calith, maybe Aldamir's threat has scared that pompous worm so much that he'll squirm away on his own but I would love to see Aldamir use him as a punching bag. Will you be giving us that satisfaction? I loved that impromptu family meeting held in Aldamir's bath chamber. I was actually waiting for the king and queen to crash the meeting as well, but I suppose somebody has to maintain the royal dignity in the family. The last bit in the chapter was very sweet and tender. If nothing else, Aldamir can take comfort from the fact that he has very loving and understanding parents and they will always be there to support him. Another excellent chapter!

Author's reply

LOL! Poor maligned Elenna. She is a bit of a ninny here. This 'discussion' went the way most arguments go...off the rails. They started off talking about what was important and ended up fighting about something entirely different. And sure, Aldamir didn't kick any butt, and we can give him brownie points for self restraint, but he let anger take him in the 'discussion' too. Elenna can't admit that she was wrong about Calith and defends him and Aldamir is defending his warriors. So the discussion went off the deep end. One day perhaps they'll both look back on this argument and see how poorly they both handled it. I admit it. I tried to find a place for Aldamir to rearrange Calith's pretty face, but it just wasn't there. If he and Elenna had worked things out, then he would have had more ground to stand on in giving Calith a much deserved whipping, but that's not what happened. So he issued the dire warning instead. Calith knows that he's bitten off more than he can chew. Aldamir could pound him like a stake with one hand tied behind him. And despite Aldamir's poor arguing skills with a elleth, he is mature enough to not let that happen. And Elenna gets to see who really does 'love' her. She has a little growing up to do. I think she grew up a lot at that very moment. Thank goodness no one else showed up to join the bath party. The room wasn't big enough to hold much more family. And all Aldamir wanted was one quiet moment. Being supportive of an adult child is a fine line. The king and queen are good and loving parents. They recognize that it's not easy to find the right balance, but in this instance, they did well. Their support was what Aldamir needed. The queen's insight did help Aldamir understand what was going on. He still feels unsure, but I think he felt a little better about himself. And this discussion with his parents and what had just happened, made him realize that he and Elenna had indeed moved a little too fast in this relationship. He and Elenna need a little space. Thanks for hanging in there with me. I'm so glad that you're enjoying the story. Karen

Oh goody, a distraction! :) Hmm a nice bath...maybe I'll use that as my next distraction. Seems to be working for Aldamir. Perhaps Seregon had been right, and Calith bore watching, but I doubted there would be much I would find out in one evening. Why do I believe that this is false foreshadowing? :) “I have seen you bathe before. Carry on,” This absolutely cracked me up! Brat! So glad I was an only child and all my cousins lived on the other side of the country. “Entertaining,” I said dryly, “Do come on in and join.” “Certainly,” Daeron intoned as he entered and took a seat next to Seregon on the low bench against the wall. “Will there be wine served?” Yes, VERY glad! :) And the bath conversation with Seregon was well done. It is so true that people will just refuse to talk to one another when everyone else can see it would be the best thing to so. They just refuse to do it. I love Aldamir's immediate suspicious attitude when he sees the two conspirators waiting outside their parents' door. And he sits between them! Too clever. And whew boy do you do a good job of showing Aldamir's anger. I could see him getting ready to just explode. Poor Legolas! “Do not forget that you will be judged by how you deal with this. If Calith can cast aspersions upon you and the throne, you can seal them by responding inappropriately.” Precisely! Very good advice, nana. Easier said than minded, I'm sure. But very, very good. This pleased me; she was not happy. Good description here of Aldmir trying to read her and great line there--it really shows how peaved he is and how much he really loves her to be pleased, grimly so, no doubt, to come to such a conclusion. Erelas did a good job of breaking the tension there. I think if he hadn't Aldamir would have been on Calith like an arrow as soon as he could politely escape the table. I like to see all the family dancing with pretty maidens. :) It makes for such a nice image in my head. And Aldamir and Thranduil dancing with the elfling was just adorable. Calith grabbed my shoulder from behind. I turned slowly, my body suddenly alert with a feral instinct that was only seconds away from escaping my control. He snatched his hand away quickly. “I must object,” he said, but I thought his voice had lost its earlier sureness. “I did not ask your permission,” I said steadily. Hah! Yes! Loved that! I am giggling with mad satisfaction. That was sooo perfect. But poor Aldamir--that conversation with Elenna was rough. It is very hard to believe that someone that you think of as a long term friend has told you such a hurtful lie. And he approached it kind of aggressively so most people would as a knee jerk reaction defend their friend. But from his perspective, her attitude has to be the most painful part of this whole experience for him. He did obviously plant a seed in her head. I think more with his last words to Calith than anything else he said or did. I think she probably will go ask some questions. Nana's comforting of her son was so well done. She is a great character. And I loved Thranduil in that scene as well. The older your kids get, the harder parenting becomes. They do such a great job of it. I think it will take a while for Elenna and Aldamir to get back to what they initially thought they could share, but please tell me that she will at least figure out what a little snake that Calith is. And let Thranduil go a round with him too. Oh he so deserves that. Update soon. This is really getting intense.

Author's reply

Aldamir's bath did become a public gathering. No one seemed too concerned with his privacy. Seregon had an agenda and he was going to carry it out no matter what Aldamir was doing. I'm sure Aldamir would agree with you that you're lucky that you didn't have a wad of siblings and cousins to disrupt your only quiet minute of the day. Aldamir was still feeling pretty hopeless about the whole thing at that time. And he was so hurt that it was hard to risk that again. But yes, he needed to talk to her. Separating the two younger guys seemed prudent to him. I'm sure he remembers when he and Seregon 'got their stories straight'. :>) Aldamir's anger wasn't lost on anyone. Naneth wanted to avoid bloodshed if possible. Adar was trying to stay calm too. Of course, they had time to talk about what Legolas and Daeron overheard and time to reach a conclusion as to how to handle it. Aldamir was blind sided...again. He had to think on his feet. There wasn't much time to act. Anger tends to take away reason sometimes. Now, everybody just stay calm! :>) Aldamir was pleased to see that Elenna was not happy. If she had appeared to be hunky dory, then he wouldn't have done anything. You can't fight for her if she's in love with someone else. Of course, Calith doesn't know that...yet. I don't know much about Erelas yet. The elleth he's interested in was a surprise. He just sort of plopped down and started looking moon-eyed at her. Aldamir didn't miss that little tidbit either. I'm glad he was a welcome addition to the table. I'm afraid that the conversation with Elenna went the way of many emotionally charged discussions. It went straight to pot! They ended up arguing about something that was completely different than where they started. Both parties are defensive and both are stubborn. She ends up defending Calith and Aldamir end up defending his warriors. At one or another during the conversation, they both confessed how they felt about one another...but not in so many words...and it went right over the other's head. Elenna almost reacted when Aldamir told her that 'she clouded his vision', but she let her anger and pride get the best of her. That's why people shouldn't argue without a referee. No one is really paying attention to anything other than their own anger. You're right that he did plant a seed. The first time during the argument and then the final time when he made it plain to Calith that she was important enough to him to hunt Calith down like a dog and use him for target practice if he hurt her. That told Elenna a lot about the depth of Aldamir's feelings. He was also letting her go because he loved her and wanted her to make her own decisions. Hard, but the mature thing to do. Just think how hard it would be to live with our parents. Fortunately, Lalaith and Thranduil do try to respect Aldamir's private life, but this was an instance where Lalaith couldn't bear to see her son so hurt. And she had some insight into what was going on in Elenna's head. She had to offer what comfort she could. Thranduil let her deal with the emotional part and he was just the rock of support. He didn't need to say much. All he needed to do was reassure his son that he was proud of how he handled a difficult situation and reassure Aldamir of his love. Calith's can't keep the wool over Elenna's eyes. In my mind, she's finished with him. She's just got to figure out exactly how she's going to get this through to him. She does indeed love Aldamir and I think she regrets the little scene already. Thanks, Elliska. Update this weekend. Karen

daw the minstrel · 6 April 2005 · Chapter 12: Chapter Twelve: Aldamir

How clever of Seregon to catch Aldamir when he can't escape a conversation! And the more the merrier, I always say. If only I could join them! I had to laugh at Aldamir sitting between Legolas and Daeron because it seemed "prudent" to separate them. He's wise beyond his years. But he learns something about his own capacity for anger too, which is interesting. His dance with Amariel was absolutely adorable. Who could resist that? Calith is luck that Aldamir didn't take him to pieces. And Eru knows I wanted to do it! Lalaith is very wise about love among Elves, and I hope she's right.

Author's reply

I suppose Aldamir could have ordered Seregon out, but the fine line that separated commander and cousin was apparently decided by Seregon. He had things to say! And I'm sure they would have been happy for you to join them. You make a good elf. At first, Aldamir thought that the two younger ones had been in trouble, but boy, was he surprised! From his own childhood with Seregon, he most likely knew all about 'getting their stories straight'. Separating them indeed seem 'prudent'. Aldamir is a fairly calm elf. He can get miffed, but over all, he's pretty even keeled. He surprised himself with how angry he was. I don't think he's ever had such an emotional investment in anyone before like he had in Elenna. At least not in a girl. Amariel set him on the path to confront the mess with Elenna. He looked at what Tabor had and realized that the risk was worth taking. His elven biological clock is ticking and he's ready to settle down and have a family. Amariel even had the queen looking wistful. If Elenna had listened to Aldamir and everything had worked out the way he wanted, Calith would have stood a better chance of a beating. As things worked out, he really didn't have a leg to stand on where Elenna was concerned. But he got his point across. Lalaith is wise and you can bet your booties that she used her 'gift' to see what Elenna was feeling. That would be too hard to pass up. Thanks, daw. Karen

Karen ... sorry it took me so long, real life has been a bear this week. And it's going to be a short, rambling piece :( "..with him by my side, ready to pounce, if the grace of the Elves left me again." Says it all ... although it is hard to imagine Legolas being anything less than graceful :) Half in his lap and half in the chair, she slept soundly with her head on his shoulder. Ah, comfortable love is an long-married one. These two are such a wonderful pair. Poor Daeron, I can imagine he will have to answer for Legolas jumping through the trees -- but somehow I don't think he could have stopped him. And nice to see Legolas worrying about the lies being told about his big brother. And finally Legolas tells Thranduil about what he and Daeron overheard -- that will put Thranduil in an awkward position but somehow I don't think Calith will easily wiggle his way out of this. I can't see Thranduil allowing the 'pretty elf' to continue with such lies about Aldamir.

Author's reply

I'm sorry to hear that your week has been so hectic. With baseball season in full swing, I can sympathize. I worked the concession stand tonight. Oh joy. Seems like the cramp that Legolas had at morning meal would have been a warning, but guess not. The minute something interesting came along, he was off into the trees. Thranduil and Lalaith are close. And she must be worn to a frazzle. She's been at Legolas's bedside for days and Aldamir is crushed and off on a dangerous mission. She's in need of some sleep. What better place...since she's once again at Legolas's bedside...to get a little shut eye than on Thranduil's shoulder? :>) Daeron got off with a lecture, but he knew that he would get one when he and Legolas were discovered by the two naneths. Nah, I don't think he could have done anything to stop Legolas either. Legolas was on mission. The king's not happy with the news about Calith. He also not overly pleased with Legolas for slipping off or for lying, but the information is useful. What's a king to do? Calith has made one of the most powerful elf's in Arda pretty darn mad. And just think how angry Aldamir will be when he finds out. Thanks, Leaward. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review...especially when so many things are going on in real life. Karen

There isn't anything better than Pinot Noir, is there? I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, though... Oh, hey, Karen! Loved the chapter. When are they ever going to figure out that Daeron is an untrustworthy babysitter? These two are the Keystone Cops on patrol. At least they knew enough to get their story straight. "The Wood-Elf defense!" LOL. Daeron is such a fatalist. I can't imagine what he'll be like when he grows up. Regarding the fruits of their illicit labor, it looks like our dear Elenna is very young. At least very young compared to Calith. Small-town girl and guileless and very naiive and not accustomed to deceit and treachery. Putty in the hands of a master manipulator who's not good at much else and who's had a few thousand years to figure out how to push people's buttons. A little blood transfusion from Daeron would do her wonders, what do you think? Legolas's little relapse was a good lesson for him. See, do what the healers tell you. Even if their name is "Saddlebags." Sorry, I digress; we're still talking about you...it was sweet when he woke to see his parents cuddled in the chair together. It's sweet to think of Thranduil cuddling, period. The poor king, he must not have known what to do about Legolas's big confession. If he listens he's tactitly approving of the little spy mission, but he can hardly afford not to. Dang, sometimes you just can't keep you hands clean no matter what you do. Loved his last line. "And then I think I will be king." That would be a fun thing to say.

Author's reply

I'm sorry the grapes failed this year and there is no Pinot Noir. As a matter, there's not a grape in the world. No wine at all! Sorry. Don't accept the vinegar anyone might send you. I have only your best interest at heart. Oh, hi! I'm glad that you could stand to read this one more time. Daeron did his best to entertain his recovering cousin. What more do you want? Common sense? At least he came through when they needed to get their story straight! :>) Doomed as it was. Poor much maligned Elenna. You're right; she's had a sheltered life in her village and Calith has had years to work on her. She's refused him, if Tree is to be believed, up until whatever prompted her to accept him this last time he asked her to bond. She's far from dumb, just a little naive, and she's been listening to Calith for so long that he started to sound good. Aldamir came along and shook up everything that Calith had worked so hard for. Calith is not happy. I like the idea of Daeron tutoring her in elf-slapping. Legolas learned several good lessons. Don't disobey the healer, don't disobey your mama, and under no circumstances lie to said mama when she can read your emotions. Ouch. Thranduil is a master cuddler. Where do you think those three ellons came from? Legolas's confession did put the king in a pickle. On one hand, he couldn't condone eavesdropping and on the other, he can't ignore Calith. It's a dirty job being king. But he gets to say he is everyday. He's willing to let you say it as long as you don't actually try to...like rule or anything. Thanks for helping and thanks for reading and reviewing. Karen

perelleth · 3 April 2005 · Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: Legolas

And now, the mighty king of the throbbing vein has been enlisted for the spy kids’ mission… “That elf” will be under watch, indeed! At the pace things are going on, I suppose they’ll soon be charging a fee for a chance to mincemeat “that elf”! See, I confess myself completely at a loss (throws hands up in utter surrender) I can make no sense of any of those settlement elves…for Eru’s sake, she was the one with a betrothal to attend, the same elleth who was hunting down the king’s son, scouting under his tunic and supporting a joint expedition within her gown…and now she’s ready to believe he had been using her? Oh my, she cannot be so utterly naïve… can she? I mean, this must surely be a case of cross-cultural clash of sorts! (Theirs or mine, I’m not quite sure yet! ;-) As your beta wouldn’t be bribed into giving away the knot of it all (Sigh. I do have some good old bottles, seasoned in old French oak barrels, estate bottled, a grape even better than Pinot noir…) I’ll just sit back and patiently wait for more of this intriguing love affair. On the other side, though, as losing sight of Daeron and his privileged smart mouth is going to leave a great hole in my reading habits, you have my permission to give it some more twists before unravelling it all, I promise I won't ask! “Naneths seem to be able to juggle three or four crises at a time and still not forget to tell you to change your undergarments” Well, undergarments seem to be an obsession in this family… you might ask Noreth if that has something to do with any particular antic, I’m sure there has to be a juicy back story there, apart from a naneth’s natural worries! ;-) Legolas did scare his parents this time; I think they’ve been more than understanding with him, (wilful negligence! Whoa! Maternal insult and sarcasm in a single reprimand! She’s great!) Poor Legolas, feeling slightly better is the worst part of recovering, I agree (never bitten by a Mirkwood spider, though!). I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying this story, is such fun finding myself just wondering about what’s coming up next!

Author's reply

Yep, everybody is in on the Elf-watch. If Aldamir knew, he would be mortified! In the end, it'll be a race to see who gets to Calith first. But I think Aldamir should get first dibs. Elenna's behavior is a complete contradiction of itself. She sure looked like she was in love. Elves don't engage in much hanky-panky outside of marriage. Looked serious to me. So how did Calith waltz in and take over? Good question. Especially considering that Elenna, according to Tree, has some insight into people. But she's young and has had a rather sheltered life. Calith has been her friend for as long as she can remember. She trusts him...over her own instincts, unfortunately. She's learning a hard lesson about trust. And trust is something that sprouts out in many directions. A confused elleth, she is. Also remember that she's not known Aldamir for long. This love affair took off like wildfire (and unexpectedly) and now she's wondering if she has indeed been duped by a slick operator. She has, but she's blaming the wrong one. Naive? Yeah...I'd say so. And Aldamir's so hurt that he's obstinate and refusing to talk to her...just what Calith wanted. Everyone seems to be so caught up in their own misery that they're not dealing with the FACTS. Nice undergarments are a universal mother's worry with children. The male of the species doesn't seem to find this necessary. Just a running joke among our little scamps. Meddling mamas. At least, even in their time of trouble, they realized that you can't pull too much wool over the nana's eyes. You just have to tweak your story a little to be technically truthful, but fatally flawed in real information. Legolas was feeling better. He thought he had everything under control. If Calith and Elenna hadn't come along, he would have stayed in the garden and gone back in when his hour was up. But...he forgot all about his promises when something interesting came along. And off he went, without one thought about the cost this might cause him. He, however, thought the risk was worth it when he had time to think about it. He was not very remorseful...until the spasm. I'm sure he felt like he had been punished by a higher power for lying and not having the honor to feel bad about it. Oh, the guilt. He crumbled like dried mud when Adar started asking leading questions. I'm so glad you're enjoying the story. It's only a few chapters away from the end. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing. Your reviews are such a treat for me. Karen

Dot · 3 April 2005 · Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: Legolas

This will be a quick one, if you don’t mind. Great chapter. I was glad we got back to Legolas. He seems to be feeling much better most of the time anyway, although that’s when we all tend to over-exert ourselves. I had to laugh at the way they all fully anticipate his attempt to be allowed outside for a while. I loved the image of Thranduil walking him around the room until the cramp had passed. His family probably feel smothering to Legolas but I thought that was a very fatherly thing for Thranduil to do, made even more so by the fact that he stayed at his son’s side, ready to catch him if he fell. So he finally got to see Calith? He does sound pretty. I know Legolas is biased anyway, but I still thought it was interesting that he had the same initial reaction of suspicion and dislike towards this elf as Daeron did. It does seem that Calith has convinced “simple” Elenna that Aldamir was playing with her. But… I suspect that Elenna may be playing her own games. I have no clue what you have up your sleeve but it’s definitely starting to look to me like there’s more going on here, some reason that Elenna and her family are stringing Calith along. She presumably just wasn’t anticipating meeting Aldamir and having such a connection with him. Maybe they want to expose Calith for something. Hmmm. Between your mysteries and daw’s mountains being on fire, it’s no wonder I’m stressed! Agh, they were caught! I feel bad for Legolas’ mother, though. What a shock she must have got. Naneth so knows he was lying too. “We will claim wood-elf defense.” LOL. What a great line! I was cringing for that whole part where Legolas struggles with the pain in his back and chest. I’ve experienced something similar a few times and my heart went out to him. It was a rather cruel reminder to him that he’s not yet fully recovered and needs to rest, no matter what’s going on outside the palace. Thank heavens for Daeron. I was so glad when Legolas’ parents took the moment to let him know how grateful they were to him. My favourite part of this chapter was that image of Thranduil and Lalaith asleep together in the chair. This must be a difficult time for them, but it’s so touching to see not only their love for Legolas but closeness to each other. It was such a powerful moment too when Legolas contemplates his father and is so moved by Thranduil’s strength, honour and great capacity for love that he feels shame for lying to his worried mother. I could read that paragraph over and over. I was glad Legolas confessed everything to his father, even though he’s now been forbidden to do or say anything else about it. I just hope Thranduil’s anger doesn’t get the better of him before he knows fully what’s going on! I hadn’t thought about Calith’s words being “damaging to the crown”, but of course they would be. It’s so much more than just a broken heart for poor Aldamir. So, who’s up next?! :-)

Author's reply

Hi Dot, I'm always glad to hear from you...short or long or in between. And this was a great review. Legolas is feeling better. In my mind, the spider venom has to work it's way out of the body over time. Most of it does fairly quickly, but the muscles store some of it longer and spasms remain a possibility for even longer. Legolas felt okay, so what's the big deal? Oh, the young. I'm sure Legolas's impressions of Calith were slightly colored by what had happened to Aldamir and by what he had heard from Daeron. But the guy is a blatant slug. Everyone and his brother--or cousin--can see it. Elenna has been blind to her 'friend'. She's learning a hard lesson about trust and pride. Because she can't allow herself to see that she was wrong about 'that elf', she's possibly losing the one she wants most--Aldamir. Maybe she's a little like Legolas in that she wants to see the good in people. And Calith has had a long to time to work his twisted POV on her. But she is sighted--though still young--and hopefully she'll put aside her pride and listen to 'her gift'. Trust issues can run in all sorts of directions. Poor Legolas. The chest cramp frightened him. Well, everyone else too. Just exactly what Mom had cautioned him about. She must have been horrified and vindicated at the same time. I think life was tough for the king and queen. They had such huge responsibilities to the realm and they had to allow their sons to be in as much danger as everyone else. Hard for any parent. They drew comfort and strength from one another. I'm so glad that you liked Legolas's realization that his father's honor would not have allowed him to lie. It takes strength to tell the truth and face your failings. Thranduil--and Lalaith too--are good role models for their sons. Legolas is getting old enough to see his future and what he would like to be like when he meets it. The queen was so upset that she couldn't calmly pry from Legolas what was really going on. And yes, she knew he was lying. That really ticked her off. Thranduil had enough distance from catching the rascal that he was able to simply lead Legolas into revealing what had happened. Good Ada! Of course, the next crisis might find the roles reversed. One parent has to keep their cool. Thanks so much, Dot. I'm so pleased that you haven't abandoned me yet. And I love your thoughtful reviews. Well, the scheming elflings are at it again, and getting caught at it too. No surprises there. I find them endlessly entertaining, but then it's probably because I'm not their naneth. Calith is one slimy elf, and Elenna cannot be too bright if she believes his tales without a doubt. I'm sorry, but I just find it hard to feel sympathy for her, whatever her plight might be to end up in such a situation. Maybe you might be able to convince me to feel otherwise. Poor Aldamir. His reputation is certainly getting a beating in this story, first by Belas and now by Calith. We all know Belas is in for his reckoning with Aldamir, now I hope Calith will also get his just dessert. With Thranduil now in on the loop, I am pretty certain that Calith will not be getting away unscathed. With any luck, Legolas might be able to redeem himself with what he has found out and will escape the punishment of being confined to his room for the remainder of this Age.

Nah, it's not a big surprise that the spy kids got caught. Most kids aren't nearly as sly as they think they are. Of course, I realize that my kids have probably gotten away with stuff that would curl my hair. I know I did. But in story form, there has to be resolution. The kids got caught. Calith is indeed a creep. LOL! I don't know if I can convince you that Elenna's not thick as a brick at the moment. She looks this way. Will you just settle for my rational? She's from a remote village. She's young and though she is gifted with insight into people, she's far from perfect in the use of her gifts. Tree tells us that Calith's been manipulating her--and other people-- for a long time and Tree's at a loss as to how Elenna can allow this to happen too. Well, Calith didn't get to where he is in her life overnight. It's been a slow process. Underneath I think Elenna knows who he is, but she can't admit to herself that she's wrong about him. Elenna is learning a hard lesson too. We won't get to see her internal conflict; all we see is her actions. She's not quite to the point of seeing Calith for who he really is. It's hard sometimes to truly see people we're close to...good or bad. Aldamir has taken it on the chin in this story. Not unusual for people in power. He's out front where he's open and two people have used him for target practice. Belas is pretty much taken care; he's in for being watched by the hawks. He won't be happy. Calith is yet to be reckoned with. First, Aldamir has to get his priorities straight and decide the most effective way to deal with the slug. Choice wisely, young grasshopper. Legolas doesn't know it, but he lucked out by having the spasm attack. He won't get off completely, but his sentence was muted slightly by the punishment he brought on himself. Thanks Manderly for continuing to read and review. Elenna would send her regards, but she's afraid of you! :>) Karen

lwarren · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: Legolas

Alright! An update...just the thing for a Saturday morning! You know, it is definitely the pits when you have been ill and feel better, but those around you have you effectively hog-tied to the bed! Poor Legolas, so bored he actually READ some of those books they brought him! LOL So he's going to get a little time outside for good behavior before once again being "tossed into bed." "And toss you, I will." From the King's mouth to the elfling's ears! :-) Only, Karen, don't tell the dwarf... Outside at last! "I am indeed an Elf set free!" And I especially liked how he reacquainted himself with each tree and flower in the garden. But then, the opportune moment presents itself...the pretty elf and the maiden show up. Legolas is not impressed..."this Elf was walking trouble." So he and Daeron disregard Naneth's instructions (not wise, no indeed, precioussss) and follow the pair down the garden path, listening for all they're worth. "...misled" Wait a minute! Wait just one darn minute! SHE'S been misled???? So, the truth is out now...Karen, just how old is Elenna anyway? I can see a young, inexperienced maiden believing that an older, more experienced 'noble elf' might deceive her and dump her in the end. And of course, Aldamir was so hurt and freaked out, he never approached her to talk...which made it look like he had gotten what he wanted from her that steamy night before and left her high and dry and alone. Calith is a SNAKE of immense proportions...all I can say is he must want her really bad to do what he has done. Is the boy terminally stupid...does he honestly think he can get away with saying such things about the King's eldest son and HEIR? I believe Calith and Belas need to form the "I Need a Brain" club...both are going to pay dearly for slandering the royal family! Uh oh, the "wrath of the angry naneth" again. Poor Daeron, but somehow I think Legolas got the more severe reaction. (After all, who's been deathly sick lately?) "We will claim wood-elf defense; we could not help ourselves." LOL Great alibi, Dearon! "I am dead." *snicker* Yes, dear Legolas, an apt conclusion! Ooohhh, and Legolas' Naneth kept him waiting...and waiting...the proverbial sword hanging over his head and him sitting there imagining every possible scenario! Then she comes roaring in, slams the door, and stands there glaring at him with that undecided, "how am I gonna kill him" look. The lecture - as a naneth of three, I applauded her all the way through it, loudest at this point: "It was not an honest miscalculation. It was an error of willful negligence." THUNK! The sword over the head just fell! Then as she stands there, "her face set hard...anger rolled off of her", it occurred to me, "OMG, she KNOWS!" She knows he is lying! Ah well, perhaps he might see light again in a couple of thousand years or four! :-) "How long is your sentence?" "Until we sail." *chokes....HA!* "Naneths seem to be able to juggle three or four crises at a time and still not forget to tell you to change your undergarments." LOL of course she's good, Daeron, she wouldn't want you hurt, taken to the House of Healing, and seen in dirty underwear! Silly elf! Bad cramp! Poor baby elf! I kept thinking...breathe, breathe, breathe...Nothing like a scary attack like that to turn his naneth back into the sweet, loving one. Parents sleeping in chair. Such a very nice picture. Legolas watching his Adar - "I wanted to be like him, not only as a warrior, but as an adult. Suddenly, I was very ashamed of myself for lying to my mother. He would not have done so." Very nice Legolas moment...our conscientious elf to the core! Adar's questioning technique is perfect - Legolas folded like a bad poker hand! "Then...I think I will be king!" I think Calith had better run for the hills! Great chapter, Karen! I am enjoying it immensely! linda

Author's reply

Bored, bored Legolas. Reading as a last resort. Not a word to the Dwarf! No one will ever know. Ha! Legolas quickly forgot his promise and the threat that if he did not do as Naneth said, he'd be in big trouble. He couldn't miss out on what Calith and Elenna were talking about. One of the things he discovered about the 'pretty elf' was that Daeron was right; the guy was a slug. He felt perfectly justified in directly disobeying an order. Of course, he was sorry he got caught. I'm going to let you lecture Elenna about putting her thinking cap on. She has been listening to the wrong elf. Calith has been smitten with her since they were children according to Tree. And, according to Tree, Calith is not above being manipulative where she is concerned. So why did she fall for his scam? Their relationship goes back a long way and he's been moving steadily toward claiming her since he decided he wanted her. A insidious elf, he is. Slowly, over a very long time, he's had her ear and has been directing everything toward his ends. Calith manipulated the truth whenever and wherever he could. Elenna is young and is gifted with insight into people. But she's been completely blind to Calith. He's tells a good tale. And she find it hard to admit that she's been wrong about him. Right now, she still takes his word. The conversation we heard was not the first one about Aldamir. He's been filling her full of baloney since he arrived. She's hurt, confused and listening to someone she thinks she can trust. This will be a tough lesson for her as well. Aldamir is hurt, obstinate and looking like the guy Calith claims he is. But the two little sleuths have got his number now. Bingo! You just put your chip on the winning number! Naneth knows the little miscreant is lying. Legolas scared the daylights out of her when she saw him up a tree, and she's angry with him for disobeying and scaring her. Add lying on top of that, and she's ready to go off like an unmanned rocket. Legolas was lucky he didn't get to try out the locked rooms in the lowest caverns. Nah, can't end up in the emergency healing suite with ratty undergarments. What would people think? Naneths have to think about these things, you know. I think the cramp scared Legolas worse than it did his naneth, even though I wouldn't call her calm. But yeah, you can't be too stern with a kid that's gotten exactly what you cautioned him about. The potential consequences were scary enough to warrant warning, and when it happens, it is scary. But she most likely wanted to tell him: "I told you so!" Later, when he's recovered. Legolas and Daeron are at that funny age between kid and adult. They have moments of great insight and then take two steps back into the kid arena when something comes along that calls them back. But he feels loved and finds comfort in the closeness of his parents. A very safe feeling. Thranduil not only has experience with raising two older sons, but he's an experienced interrogator too. Naneth was too upset and angry to get to the core of this disobedience. The king got to be the good cop. He simply lead Legolas to what he wanted to know. And yep, the kid crumbled like week old bread. "I think I will be king." That statement has a lot of possibilities. None of which I think Calith will appreciate. Thanks, Linda. I'm so glad that you're enjoying the story. It's coming down the home stretch. Just a few more chapters to go. Karen

French Pony · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: Legolas

I always hate that stage of getting better where you feel just fine, thank you, except that you can't breathe or do any of the things you like to do. It's just maddening, and I can only imagine how horrible it must be to feel like that and be an adolescent boy. I don't blame Legolas one bit for wanting to push the limits, especially when there's something as interesting as Calith to watch. Calith, by the way, sounds like quite a piece of work. Is he related to Belas, I wonder, or is it just Aldamir's bad luck that he happens to have both of the two main villains of the story slandering him? I also wonder how much Calith believes of what he says. He sounds like a desperate Elf, really pushing to finalize the betrothal. He's not sure about Elenna (with good reason, one might add), and he appears to want to get things settled Right Now. And she clearly doesn't want him -- even our two teenage boy heroes can see that, and teenage boys are not known for that kind of sensitivity. So Calith has some real power over Elenna, and it'll be interesting to find out what his deal is. But first, naneth! Beware the naneth in full steam. She sounds a little like the stories I've been told about my bubbe -- she's a screamer. Especially when dealing with the third of three boys she's raised. Most of the mothers of three children that I know tend to be pretty mellow with the baby -- no matter what, they always wear this "been there, done that, seen it, bought the T shirt" attitude. But ol' Lalaith goes into full blast mode just as if Legolas were the first kid ever to overstrain himself on his first day out of bed. Which shock, of course, prompts another spasm, and wacky hijinks ensue. It's so nice to see The Family all pulling together. Legolas must feel so loved right now. And it figures that Thranduil would be the one most likely to listen to questionably-obtained information about Aldamir's romantic rival. He was once a teenage boy himself, of course.

Author's reply

Legolas was so enthralled with what Calith was saying that not one single thought other than hearing the rest of the conversation entered his mind. And he was bored, feeling better and ready to stretch his legs. Calith and Elenna's conversation was just what he needed to take the leap. Calith is a piece of work. He's had years to manipulate Elenna into his plans. She's kindhearted and he's used this aspect of her personality to further his own cause. You're absolutely right that he's desperate. His carefully wrought plans are falling apart. If Legolas and Daeron can see that he's on shaky ground, then you know he's in a lather! The distance in siblings among the Elves must have made each child like having a first child again. Parents had the experience of raising children by the time the last one come along, but they also had the luxury of focusing on rearing one child at a time. Lalaith was frightened out of her wits when she found Legolas up a tree and angry that he had done something so dumb and disobedient. Nope, this wasn't the first dumb prank she's seen from her sons, but the fear for their safety wasn't muted over time. Her initial reaction was like one big burst of 'nanatude'. Legolas does feel loved and grateful for his family at this moment. That's nice. Too bad it only made him feel worse about being a liar. :>) Thranduil played the 'good cop' role here. He knew there was more to the story than Legolas had let on. He simply asked the right questions. The kid spilled his guts. Thanks, French Pony! I appreciate you continuing to read and review. Tickles me to death, it does! Karen

Nilmandra · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: Legolas

Poor Legolas - not only does he get warned, disobey for a very good cause and get caught and suffer the consequences, then he actually suffers the consequence his parents were concerned about! Well, actually he is fortunate - the timing is such that it can be no coincidence and he will surely not forget this lesson. So Calith has convinced Elenna of some lies about Aldamir. I admit I am a little disappointed in her for believing him without checking out the facts. Surely she read no deceit in Aldamir? Why would she mistrust her own ability to discern? I think Tree might need to set her straight - gently but firmly! I think she, like Legolas, will learn a good hard lesson not soon forgotten. I cannot wait for the warriors to get home so we can see Calith made into mincemeat.

Author's reply

It was inevitable that Legolas would do something to bring about just what his parents feared. He couldn't help himself. Eavesdropping was too good to pass up. And he did gather some interesting intelligence. But you're right that he won't forget this anytime soon. It should stay with him for at least a week! :>) I'm pleased that you see the discrepancy of the Elenna we first met, and she zeroed in so readily on Aldamir, and the Elenna who is buying Calith's lies. She's a lot like Lalaith in that she is gifted with understanding people. Tree is even shocked that she doesn't see through Calith. She is indeed learning a hard lesson. Calith's control over her has been insidious. She's allowed him to lead her because she simply couldn't admit that she was wrong about him. She's young too, and she doesn't entirely trust her own powers of discernment. Tree notes that she's kindhearted. This is a blessing and a curse. Her heart goes out to Calith because no one seems to like him much, and she's tried to be his friend. Over the years, Calith has learned to twist her good qualities into something useful for himself. Boy, is he screwing things up now! The warriors are on their way home. The showdown at the Mirkwood Corral is on its way. Thanks so much for hanging in there with me and this story. I'm so pleased that you are! Thanks. Karen

Oh goody, breakfast and a fanfic! I'm glad to be back to see how Legolas is doing. Going crazy, I see. So bored, in fact, I had actually read some of the books. I wasn't expecting that and it really cracked me up. I think that is how all my lit students felt--they had to be really bored in life to deign to read a book I assigned. :) Poor kid, I understand his frustration though and I'm glad he got to go to the garden. Oooo! And Calith. I hated him the moment he opened his mouth. Lying little #@%$^. as he moved down the wall like a squirrel cautiously observing a fat nut on the forest floor I love your descriptions. “So what then will you tell her?” he asked. “We need to have the same story you realize. My naneth is going to ask me what we were doing.” This also made me chuckle--the conniving little brats! This is obviously well practiced. We will claim wood-elf defense another chuckle! Oh boy! Naneth in full steam is way scarier than Thranduil! And that's saying a lot! I wouldn't want to see those two tag-teaming on poor Legolas. But she was right. They did do a stupid thing and the problem with kids is that they never understand that what they are doing is stupid until they get hurt. So yelling is, in the long run, much less painful than a stupid deed's natural punishment. As Legolas soon saw with that nasty spasm. The description of Thranduil and his wife sleeping together in the chair was very sweet. I love things like that. And I am glad Legolas told his father (I doubted he could hold it in). I think Pretty Elf is going to seriously regret crossing the Royal Family. Not smart at all. “I think I will be king.” *Snort* Now I know where Legolas gets his smart mouth. He comes by it honestly. PS. To answer your question in your last reply, yes, there will be another chapter of my fic this weekend, thank you for asking. :) But not until Sunday because I have to work again today. These 6 day work weeks are getting old.

HI! Yep, it must have taken some major boredom to force the little inmate into reading. Being injured was like having a 'get out of jail free' card and dad gummit, it didn't turn out to be near the fun he had hoped. Calith is a slimy slug. He's got his routine down pat though. He merely had to get Elenna alone so he could stir the pot. The conniving little brats is right! Don't you remember when you were that age and you knew what the right to do was, but by golly, you just couldn't help but try and wheedle your way out of whatever it was you did? I do. I figured these two were internally warring with what was right and the strong desire to avoid punishment. Somehow in their demented little heads they came up with something of a compromise: only tell part of the truth. It sounded so reasonable...at the time. Legolas had scared his mother nearly out of her wits. She was so relieved that he was unharmed that she figured she had the right to do some head knocking! And due to her gift of reading emotions, she knew her offspring was lying through his teeth. That really ticked her off. She got on a roll. Seems to me...in my household anyway...when one parent has hit their limit, the other steps in to be the voice of reason. The roles flip-flop regularly, but this was Thranduil's time to be the good cop. He knew Legolas wasn't telling them the whole truth too, so he simply asked him leading questions, knowing the kid would crack. The king managed to hold on to his appearance of calm, but he was NOT happy with the news about Calith. "I think I will be king." Loaded response. YEAH! I'll be checking the opening page hourly tomorrow. I hate you have to work today and interfere with my reading pleasure, but some bosses can be so insensitive. Thanks, Elliska! I always get a charge out of reading your reviews. They brighten my day. Karen

I'm supposed to be getting ready to leave for my son's house, but I had to stop and read this! I loved Daeron's suggestion that they claim "wood elf defense." That's hilarious. But poor Legolas. He must feel really guilty. He did himself harm. But you know what? As a mother, I'd probably be feeling sorry I scolded him so hard and then he had this cramp. But then I'd also feel simultaneously justified. Motherhood is hard. I also liked Legolas's respect and admiration for his father.

Author's reply

A trip! Hope you have a good time. Tell your son that I just got a new phone and he probably programmed it. Perhaps he could share with me how to answer the dang thing? Too many bells and whistles for a technological Neanderthal. My youngest son had to set it up for me. Daeron was grasping at straws to explain their obvious disobedience. What better defense than to claim that they were simply following nature. Like anyone would buy that! I sympathized with Lalaith too. When the spasm hit, she probably did feel bad that she had jerked a knot in his tail, but she also patted herself on the back that she was right! I could hear her saying, "See! I told you so." And because she's gifted with reading emotions, she knew the little scamp was lying to her. Yep, motherhood is a minefield. Legolas was so riddled by guilt that he just cracked when he had a quiet moment to observe his parents. He does love and admire his father and he knew that Thranduil wouldn't have lied. Another layer of guilt pudding got ladled on top of what was already there. So...he spilled his guts. Thranduil's not pleased with this information either. Thanks, daw. Have a good trip! Karen

Bodkin · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: Legolas

Long live Aran Thranduil! Three cheers for the Elvenking. (I don't suppose he'd like to give us the benefit of his wisdom, would he?) It's a good thing that our hero Daeron was there to rescue his cousin from his health blip. And it's a good thing that it didn't occur when he was up a tree! They'd have had trouble hiding from 'this elf' if they'd tumbled down in front of him. I'm glad that Legolas cracked and gave his father the information about this elf. He is in much the best position to investigate it and come down like a mighty oak on the obnoxious and manipulative dilettante. Elenna comes across as an elleth who has been pushed into agreeing finally to do something she has always refused to agree to - and he is determined to get her to the point where she can't change her mind. This elf is bad news. (And what a point to get her out of her aunt's cottage - the moment the perceptive queen arrives and might notice that something is going on. The elf deserves to have Legolas and Daeron target him. Make it so, King.) Enduring 'the wrath of the angry naneth'. Poor Daeron - although he sounds less pained than his cousin after the attack of the worried queen. But however firm she was - all it takes is a threat to her baby and she's back in caring mother mode. I loved Legolas's response to seeing her curled up on his adar's lap. Lucky not-quite-elfling. I can't wait to find out more.

Author's reply

Legolas frightened Lalaith so much that her sensitivity went right out the window. And! She's capable of reading emotions. She knew the little whelp was lying! She was on a roll. Thranduil had time to simmer down and use another approach to wheedling the information out of his son. He simply asked leading questions, knowing that Legolas would crack. And crack he did. Thranduil is not pleased that this elf is lying about his oldest son, but he also has concerns about this kind of rumor taking hold out in the remote villages. Got to nip this in the bud! You're right about Calith. He's pushing hard to keep his train on the tracks. He's hanging on to Elenna by a thread and he knows it. He had to get Elenna away from everyone to talk to her. He could hardly say the things he did to her with an audience since said audience might contradict what he said. Elenna's aunt has lived in the stronghold village for a long time and she would know instantly that the slug was lying. Calith is a sly elf...and a jerk to boot. Legolas was on a major guilt trip when he woke and saw his parents united in his care. As maddening as their watchfulness can get to him, he realized that when he really needed them, he was glad that they were there. He realized how much he admires and loves his father and that really piled the guilt on. Poor guilt ridden elfling. That'll teach him! I hope. :>) Thanks again for reading and reviewing. Karen

Bodkin · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

I've been away for a few days - and have come back to so many treats. Not the least being two whole chapters of something that is more than Good Enough. I wonder how much time Seregon has had to put into tact training over his friendship with Aldamir. Little, I suspect and none of that in romantic tact - so he is doing very well. The atmosphere in the forest is so thick you could almost cut it - between tropical heat and imminent thunder and spider-created tension and frustrated romance, the tension is zinging in the air. The naked-elf-in-water interlude was greatly needed by all! Poor Aldamir. Yet, at the same time, standing back all prickly and hurt - taking the word of no-one but the pretty elf - is not a move likely to untangle the situation. And neither is feeling responsible for every action and omission since the beginning. Tree is great. Close enough to be able to horse around, yet able to have a bit of distance and an awareness of what is going on outside the hothouse of the Stronghold. I hope Aldamir can let go of his need to contain his feelings enough to listen to what is being said. And the spiders! Why do I get a feeling that there is more to their sudden burst of intelligence than there should be? I hope I'm anthropomorphising.

Author's reply

Welcome home! We missed you! Seregon would be pleased that you find him tactful. I imagine he would say that he's about as tactful as a warg in a tu-tu. But his heart is in the right place. It's tough to see someone you care about so hurt. And this situation is not something that happens everyday to Aldamir. He's been so cautious through the years that this is a real kick in the teeth. This is the hottest summer anyone can remember. If the Elves are suffering from the heat, I can only imagine how awful it's been for the humans. But a nice swim helped cool us all off. I think. :>) Aldamir is still suffering the shock and hurt of suddenly finding out that his love had been misplaced. He's been so busy with the spider situation that he's not really had time to digest everything that's happened. That's good and bad. Hopefully when he regains some of his balance, he'll find a direction. Tree is not overly impressed with titles. But he's a loyal subject and friend to the House of Oropher. Aldamir might have to race him to beating the stuffing out of Calith. I don't think Tree tolerates fools gladly and Calith is certainly not one of his favorite people. The spiders in The Hobbit were chatty little critters. And Shelob could turn a nasty phrase. I think it's the nature of the beast to have some intelligence, though I don't think they were college material. I still think the spiders mainly operated on instinct. Seregon was shocked that they had 'any' smarts at all. We hates.s.s.s them spiders! Thanks so much, Bodkin, for reading and reviewing. I'm so glad you're home! I hope your trip was for pleasure and that you enjoyed it. Karen

lwarren · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Well now! Weellll nooow! What have we here? Elves frolicking in the water? Oh my...... Seregon is not only a supportive relative, he's a good, steadfast friend, and Aldamir needs him right now. I was glad to see the Commander slow down enough to actually listen and talk to his cousin, even tho' he wasn't too thrilled with the subject matter. And Tree...well, he's wonderful and knows the royal family so well; I feel much better having him around (such a fountain of information, and I agree, based on what he's observed, the betrothal of "that elf" and Elenna doesn't make any sense. I still smell a rat...a pretty rat!) Anyway, Tree is cool! I especially liked Seregon's opinions about his cousin's abilities as THE commander of the troops of the realm. He had some very deep insight into the abilities and strengths of Aldamir. Of course, right now Aldamir figures there is not a worse failure in all of Arda and he (and the realm) would be better off commanding a troop of squirrels! :-) Silly, sweet, heartsore elf... Spiders...creepy...clickety...smelly...ugh! *covers eyes* Are they dead yet? You do a really fine battle, Karen. I was very uh...impressed (translate to jealous) with the descriptions and strategies...and talking....hissing....slimey....spiders....ick! The whole day was very tense and the weather didn't help either. You also write a thunderstorm pretty violently, too! :-) I worried some about Aldamir's troops catching up with the main body of *yuck* before they got to Erelas - lots of tension at that point, too. Really well done! So, HOW many people are keeping an eye on "that elf" now? I wonder what Aldamir will say when he realizes what his baby brother and young cousin have planned? I think the boys need to enlist Tree...he would help! LOL Great chapter, Karen...lots of action...lots of wet elves (uh, sorry!)...lots of gross arachnids which are now thankfully spider-ka-bobs on the pit! YEAH! go elves! (uh, so sorry..long day...) linda

Author's reply

LOL! Linda, what a great review. I chuckled all the way through it. Seregon is a good friend. Actually, he and Aldamir are more like brothers than cousins. They grown up together and know one another quite well. Seregon is as offended as Aldamir about the Elenna business. He can't for the life of him see why Elenna would chose 'that elf' over Aldamir. And I don't think he likes to lose and this looks like a challenge to him. Aldamir's been hard to recruit to his team, but he's trying. Seregon's heart is in the right place. Tree isn't likely to let this pass either. He's devoted to the king and his family. He was completely devoted to Oropher and it just kills him to see anything happen to any of Oropher's kin. And you're right that he's a good source of information. Tree's been living in this forest since the lights first came on. Seregon is not an unbiased source, but he does see Aldamir's strengths as a commander. No one works more closely with Aldamir and he's seen how the warriors respond to him. Aldamir instills loyalty naturally. He's loyal to his troops and they are in return. Yep, at the moment, Aldamir can't see anything but what he considers his own failures. I'm so glad that you like the battle! What a nice compliment. I admit that I had some help in tightening up the scene and turning up the tension. Meckinock is very helpful beta. Her red pen was busy throughout that part. After I dumped paragraphs and shifted dialogue, it was much better. I love thunderstorms! I love the way the air shifts and the wind picks up until the leaves shiver and whirl. I love the sound of thunder rolling over the mountains. Now, I don't like them when they get so strong that tornados are possible. Don't like tornados. Seems like everybody and their brother--literally--are keeping an eye on 'that elf'. Everyone can see that something is wrong...but Aldamir. He's too busy with his broken heart and a forest full of spiders. Maybe someone will figure out what Calith is up to. Thank you so much for your kind words about this chapter. The wet elves are especially pleased that you found them...pleasing. :>) Legolas is reporting next. Karen

meckinock · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Your description of the heat, humidity, and composty aroma of the woods made me want to jump into the swimming hole with Aldamir and the boys. Well, all right, that wasn't the only reason. Tree is quite the information broker. I suppose when you're around long enough to remember wiping Oropher's nose, you learn a few things. Too bad Aldamir isn't ready to listen. I thought Seregon's statement that he's looking for Aldamir, not peace, was interesting. Why is Seregon not seeking peace, I wonder? Because he's already found it or he's stopped looking? It's nice to see Aldamir from Seregon's perspective. I bet the Commander doesn't see himself as a natural leader; certainly not at the moment. The movement to battle was nicely orchestrated; in fact I felt it was improved by some musical accompaniment. I hope you don't mind that I turned on the "Gladiator" soundtrack. I liked the little scene between Seregon and the young warrior, when Seregon stopped himself from scolding the boy "as he would have Daeron." LOL. Tell Dot I like Pinot Noir.

Author's reply

Oh yeah, sure, you just wanted to cool off! Ha! However, I'd can't say I blame you. I like to play in the water games myself. Tree has been around those woods since the sun came up the first time. He knows nearly everyone and what's happening. Not that he's nosey, he's just been around so long that he can't help but know who's who. Nah, Aldamir wasn't much interested in hearing anything about Elenna at that moment. He's distressed enough that her name keeps coming up. That's an interesting question about Seregon seeking peace. Any of the above, I guess. At the time I was writing this, and was tinkering about in Seregon's head, the feeling I remember was that he had not gone to the rock that night to find peace, but to find Aldamir because he was worried about him. This is probably not a huge statement about Seregon over all, but just one that fit the moment. He was not thinking about what he wanted at the time; he was thinking about what Aldamir needed. How's that sound? Aldamir has been a good and competent commander, but he's not feeling it at the moment. He feels like the biggest screw up on the planet. I imagine the battle scene could only be enhanced if you turned up the music to Gladiator so loud that you couldn't read. :>) However, thinking of Russel Crowe in a leather skirt is terribly distracting to me. I'm glad you liked the scene...thanks to my advisors it turned out a whole lot better. When Daeron pledges his faith, Aldamir will have to see that Daeron is posted way far away from his older brother. Can you imagine the lectures? Of course, Aldamir will have to do the same. A case of bribery Pinot Noir is on the way...from me! I'm not telling Dot anything! Thanks for all your help. Karen

Leaward · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Another good chapter! Your description of the rock and Seregon thinking of it as "the Gray King's Pool" is wonderful, as was Tree's attempt to distract Aldamir from his despair. I also liked how Seregon recognizes Aldamir's 'song blending with the forest.' What a wonderful 'elven' description that reminds the reader of the elven connection even as far back as the Ainulindalë and the making of the world. And once again your description of the strategies against the spiders seems so well thought-out. (Do you have a soldier advising you on strategies hidden in a closet somewhere?)

Author's reply

Thanks, Leaward. I like the idea of swimming in a pool with a big rock in the middle to sit on and soak up the sun. This rock seemed rather majestic to me. Tree was hoping to distract Aldamir for a moment, but I think he'd have been just as likely to do the same thing even if nothing particular was going on. Tree doesn't seem to be able to refrain from teasing Aldamir. When Aldamir was sitting on the rock contemplating the nature of love gone bad, I think he was nearly in a meditative state, letting himself reach out to his surroundings. He was looking for comfort. The wood-elves were so connected to their environment that I think they tuned in fairly easily. Take Aldamir's frame of mind, mix it with his natural elven sensibilities and he was humming with oneness when Seregon found him. Anyway, that was kind of my thinking. :>) I'm glad the military campaign sounded real enough that you didn't run screaming from the room. I do admit to having some ex-military personnel on staff though. That's a definite plus! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review. Always love hearing from you! Karen

elliska · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Hi! Long day at work yesterday so I am finally getting a chance to read this. Seregon's conversation/fooling around with Aldamir was very sweet. I love seeing these cousins in the royal family so close. And I love Tree, so that just made it better. That conversation about Calith was interesting too. You are doing a good job dribbling out different information about him from the various perspectives. I liked Aldamir's reaction to hearing what Seregon learned. Its a sort of bitter, stubborn response, but it is honorable too. Especially given who he is, he can't afford to go pushing his will around. God those spiders are nasty. I love writing about them because they just have a natural ick factor. :) Good job with the descriptions in that part, especially Seregon's observations on Aldamir. I liked that. And spiders with a strategy indeed. That's what people forget--these spiders in Mirkwood are descendants of Ungoliant and Shelob--they talk, have desires, and scheme, just like they did/do. They are nasty enemies. I liked the spiders' strategy. Great chapter and a nice way to start off today. Looking forward to the next.

Author's reply

Hi, Elliska, I'm glad you finally had a minute to yourself, and that you chose to spend some of it with Seregon. Aldamir needed a little down time too. He's so focused on his job that his cousin and Tree decided to take matters into their own hands. Guys are so physical that a good wrestling match, I think, always helps offer relief of pent-up energy. I don't like it in my house, but these guys are out in the woods without any female folk around to worry about the furniture. I'm so pleased that you like Tree. I, of course, like him a lot. He's a loyal subject and friend to the royal family. Tree feels close to and responsible for these two younger members of Thranduil's house. Getting Aldamir to relax for a moment was his job. :>) Tree's a wise fellow. There really isn't much that Aldamir can do about the Elenna situation. I agree with him that he should stay out of it unless there is cause for him to believe that Elenna is somehow being coerced into this marriage. Stubborn and bitter? You betcha! And honorable too. I figure if a spider has the ability to talk, then they have to have some reasoning ability. And you make a good point about them being the descendents of the nasty girls. They do have desires and schemes up their...skinny legs. I hates.s.s.s spiderses.s.s.! A big can of Raid would be nice. Yuk! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review. I love hearing from you AND I note on the calendar that the weekend is coming up. Not to be pushy or anything....but is there another chapter waiting to be posted from you? Karen

Manderly · 30 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

That chapter was rather cringe-worthy. I don't know what's worse, spiders or orcs. I think I would have to choose spiders, scheming ones too. Yech! It's a good thing that Aldamir and his warriors were well-prepared. Aldamir is pretty hard on himself. He's lucky to have both Seregon and Tree around for support and to lighten things up. What Tree said about Calith is interesting. I wonder what hold he has on Elenna.

Author's reply

Cringe-worthy is good! I don't know which would be worse either...stinking grunting orcs...oh wait, I live with them...or spiders. This campaign was well prepared. And Aldamir was busy seeing that it run smoothly...too absorbed possibly. He was lower than an earthworm. As far as he could see, everything wrong in the world must have been due to something he did. But he's tough; he'll bounce back. Tree is a fountain of knowledge. He knows everybody. I suppose that's what happens when you live for thousands of years in the same place. He certainly doesn't trust Calith as far as he can spit. There's something up with this odd betrothal. Thanks for reading and reviewing, Manderly. It's always a pleasure to hear from you. Karen

Dot · 30 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Oh, goody. Me likes Seregon lots and lots. O.k, so I read most of this peeking through my fingers just incase there were icky creatures about, but I still really enjoyed it!! And it’s nothing to do with frolicking, naked elves. Really. I have to say, I just adored your use of description in this chapter, especially of the forest around them. Mmmm, wonderful. I was so glad Tree and Seregon took it upon themselves to draw their “overly efficient commander” out of himself. Apart from trying to keep his mind off Elenna and her pretty elf, he seems to be determined that this time he won’t fail in his duties. So what better way to distract him than give him a good soaking?! I think I had a silly smile on my face for the whole time the three of them were playing about in the water like elflings. It was lovely too to see Seregon and Aldamir messing about with each other. Those two are too serious around each other far too often. What Tree says about Calith is very intriguing. I imagine he’s a fairly good judge of people so if he thinks the situation is odd, then I’d tend to believe him. He seems to be edging towards thinking she’s feeling sorry for Calith for some reason, but it’d have to be some reason, really wouldn’t it? I’m starting to think there’s more to Sordien and Elenna’s “secret” than her betrothal and Calith knows it. If he really is that manipulative then he could quite well be using something against them as a way to get her parents permission for them to marry. Hmm. I don’t know why I’m even bothering trying to see what’s going on – it’s not like you’re going to tell me! Could you maybe whisper it to me? I won’t tell. I felt sorry for Lathien and Tabor. They’re very loyal, which is good obviously, but do the poor things have to forego sleep just because the other two are restless?! “The trees give me strength, and the stars accept me as a child of their own. I could ask for no more.” Oh Karen, that’s so lovely. It was quite a lonely image of him spending the night sitting under the stars like that. I hate to see him think he’s not worthy of others’ devotion and to feel such melancholy and despair at all that has happened. But there’s a difference between that self-pity and the humility he seems to feel as a woodelf in the vastness of the night sky and the forest and it’s a nice thought that he finds even a tiny moment of peace. I was relieved that Seregon and Aldamir took this chance to have an honest conversation with each other. Seregon certainly seems to have everything worked out in his head! How did Calith find out, though? I must go back and re-read when I get a chance. As bad as I feel for Aldamir, I’d tend to agree that he can’t really do much. I mean, technically Elenna is betrothed to someone else. He can’t interfere in that. She presumably knows that he still loves her. She just has to talk to him. Darn those spiders for keeping him away from home!! I had to laugh, though, at how many people think Caltih “bears watching”. There’ll be quite a gang trailing after him soon! I just love the image of Aldamir walking amongst his warriors, preparing them. He really was born for this role. And they have no idea of the thoughts and questions that plague him. “Globular”?? That’s disgusting! Ugh. Ick. Yuck. *shudder* Yeah, spiders dead. Very good. Moving on… I hope that wasn’t spider stew they were eating. Yay, it’s Erelas! I hope he gets to visit home soon. Legolas would be cheered by his presence. And sure, there’s no harm in adding another elf to the snooping-in-Calith’s-business contingent. I was glad he was so light-hearted about Legolas once he heard he was doing well and was able to joke with Aldamir about their naneth. I think Aldamir needs that, as well as needing to see that no-one holds him to blame for anything. Anyway, great chapter. Intriguing as always! :-) P.S. Does your beta know what’s going on? Does she like chocolate? Wine? Money? My first-born child? There could be a bit of a wait for that last one, though…

Author's reply

You can look now. The spiders are d.e.a.d! For the time being.... They'll be back, but not in this story...so will the naked elves...at some point. I'm sure your interest in the bathing habits of elves is strictly scientific. Mine, too. Was that thunder I heard? Aldamir was slightly overly efficient. Keeps him busy. And you're absolutely right that he didn't want to see anything go wrong with this mission. Anything he could control, he did his best. The water sports were a nice diversion for him. Tree is not likely to let pass anything that looks like fun. And teasing the Thranduilion is one of his favorite pastimes. Aldamir is far too serious sometimes for Tree's wood-elf sensibilities. Tree knows a lot about Calith and Elenna. I think he's been watching this 'friendship' since they were children. He is a good source. I couldn't find a place to put it in, but he's Elenna's mother's cousin. He knows of what he speaks. Elenna is family. Tabor and Lathien would love a good night's sleep. They have requested that you tell the king. :>) I was glad that Aldamir and Seregon had a chance to have a heart to heart too. Aldamir needed to have Seregon support him and it was a good time. I'd like to know more about Erelas too. He'll show up again. My husband is rushing me to finish because we have a baseball game to go to and he's afraid our son will start pitching. I wouldn't want to miss that either, but I hate to leave you so soon. And my beta....she's got top secret clearance! Hm.m.m. But even the most loyal can be bought... I'll get a gag order. Thank you so much for all the kind words. I'm so happy that you enjoyed this. Karen

perelleth · 30 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Yeah! massacre of hideous spiders!!! I was needing that, coming home after a loooong day full of silliness and general nuisances! Had I read this before going to work, I'd have been a Seregon myself and had left some good carcasses in my trail! Out of my system! done. I was laughing aloud everytime someone said "Calith bears watching!" Just relax, everybody! the spy kids are taking care!(Sort of...) This Calith thing is getting truly disconcerting Karen, in fact this is far more interesting than Prince Charles to-be-or-not-to-be "secret" marriage!!!! How is this going to end up, I wonder!!!!??? Let's hope Elenna "gets word" of Aldamir's conditions, but anyway, her behaviour seems... a bit...misguided? Poor guy, he went all way from heaven to hell and now is just trying to find the bus back! Thanks he had Tree! Seregon definitely deserves a hug, such a good friend and a patient ear! I was wondering whether we would read Erelas pov of the avalanche, but they have managed to dispose of giant spiders in one and only busy, sweaty chapter! Well done! This, I must tell you, simply made my day. Go you!

Author's reply

If Seregon has helped you deal with your day, then his work is done! :>) Yep, the spiders are just a bonfire in the woods now. At least for the time being. Unfortunately, Tolkien's map shows that they come back. Really, everyone suspects Calith and plan to keep an eye on him. Unfortunately, that's about all anyone can do...unless they come up with some hard cold evidence of what he's up to. Well, the Crowned Prince of the realm's love life has been rather...out there, hasn't it? Everyone knows. That just kills Aldamir too. He's such a private person to start with and to know that everyone knows that he was dumped is his worst nightmare. Elenna's behavior has been hard to follow so far. She was giving out all the right signals. What happened? Seregon is open for hugs anytime you feel like giving him one. Shameless, he is. I'm just getting to know Erelas in fits and spurts. He's gone so much of the time, that I've had a hard time getting to know him. He does show up again. I really do have to find out more about what's going on with him. I can't tell you how good it makes me feel to know that you enjoyed this chapter so much. You've made my day! Thanks! Karen

French Pony · 30 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

Between Tree, Seregon, and the spiders, Aldamir certainly has the distraction he needs. If he's got to do his job, he can't afford to brood (much as he would like to brood, I'm sure), so it's good that he has people to stick with him and spiders to fight. And I'll bet he's busy imagining Calith's face on every single one of the spiders he kills. Speaking of Calith, he gets more interesting with each passing chapter. A manipulative dilettante who has managed, it seems, to get himself betrothed to a high-ranking, eminently stable lady. Perhaps it was one of those impulsive things, long ago. No parental permission, of course. And now everyone (except Calith) is desperate to find a way to wiggle out of the deal while still saving face. You don't want to get caught in the gears of the wedding machine, for it will chew you up and spit you out like a lump of meat. (Saw it happen to a friend; it wasn't pretty.) I suppose we can hope that the spider battle will help Aldamir put some distance between himself and his problems and give him a chance to work off some of his aggression. Then, with the loving help of Tree and Seregon, he can put that ol' brain to work and set about finding out what's really up with Calith. I'd guess that this betrothal might be some weird form of blackmail, but Calith doesn't seem to be together enough for that.

Author's reply

And I'll bet he's busy imagining Calith's face on every single one of the spiders he kills. LOL! I'm sorry Seregon didn't think to suggest this as therapy to Aldamir. That would have made the commander feel better. You're right that all the distractions and support has helped Aldamir deal with this mess. But when the dust settles, he's going to have to make some decisions about what, if anything, he's going to do. Calith is hard to read at the moment. We've not seen much of him and all we know about him is what we've heard second hand. But Tree is a pretty good source, and he's baffled by the whole betrothal thing. Boy, it would be nasty to get caught in the wedding machinery, but Calith does look pretty happy to be there. I think a good campaign of spider slaying is just what the healer would have ordered to help Aldamir work off his aggression. Kill two birds with one stone. He cleans the western woods of the enemy and sees Calith's face on every spider he beheaded. Yep, sounds good to me! Now, he has to go home and try to act civilized. Thanks French Pony! Karen

Nilmandra · 30 March 2005 · Chapter 10: Chapter Ten: Seregon

How nice to find this and take an early lunch break. Aldamir's position on Elenna is probably wise; hopefully there is someone who will pass on to Elenna that that her relationship with Aldamir is salvagable and she just needs to take the first steps to correcting it. She really is responsible for that much and hopefully she has initiative to not let this fish get away. Seregon is the ever loyal cousin and Aldamir is fortunate to have him. I enjoyed how the brothers and cousin felt bad for Legolas, but one could hear a little but of fun too, for now that they know he is improving they can laugh at naneth hovering over him. I admit though, I am anxious to get back to the Legolas-Daeron plans!

Author's reply

I'm so glad Seregon shared lunch with you today. He mentioned asking Elrond for permission to 'hang out' with you. As hard as it, Aldamir is smart to be respectful of the betrothal. There's really not much he can do if she's not receptive. And of course, he doesn't know how she feels. I'm with him that he'll just have to wait and see if she comes to him. Elenna is responsible for a lot of what's happened. I sure wouldn't let Aldamir get away. Seregon is loyal to Aldamir. He's also incensed that this happened to his cousin. On one hand, he wants to comfort Aldamir and on the other, he wants to see Aldamir WIN this conflict. Seregon is all for bringing this thing to a head. His thinking is that if Aldamir wants her, by golly, go and get her. Fortunately, Aldamir is a less impulsive in this matter. Legolas and Daeron are still plotting. Legolas will tell us all about it in the next chapter. Thanks, Nilmandra. I appreciate you reading and reviewing. Karen
