Leaward · 9 March 2005 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: Legolas

The king has not arisen yet, only my adar. I love how you have Legolas being able to distinguish between his father as 'dad' and father as 'king'. What an important distinction -- and probably one hard to have learned. The detail of the sitting room makes me able to visualize it so clearly -- and want to sit in that room all comfy -- especially in a winter with the fire going! LMAO about the ‘underclothes’ his nana wants him to bring! So typically a Mom! Does she think I have ten days worth of garments in this one small pack? Also a typical answer. I can see my kids complaining in exactly the same way! LMAO again!

Author's reply

Hi Leaward, I imagine that it's sometimes hard for the Thranduilions to tell the difference when dad is dad and dad is king. So, I think you're right that it's a hard distinction to learn to make. Having to separate roles of parent and rulers would confuse me! I'm glad you liked the sitting room. I see this a private retreat for the king and queen that few enter other than family...and the maid, of course. That's one of the perks of being queen. Having servants. I want a few myself, but good servants are hard to come by these days with all these fair labor laws and such. Bummer, huh? :>) Unfortunately, I would most likely be the scullery maid. Oh wait! I already am. Noreth is the quintessential mother of all. She just can't help herself. She mothers everyone. Seregon has learned to deal with this aspect of her personality, but Daeron is at an age where he's just mortified. And yeah, I know what you mean about your kids. My sons' friends all tease me now that I can't let anyone go out the door without telling them to be careful...about forty times. For me, it's like hanging garlic around their necks. Wards off crazy drivers and pot holes and idiots with destruction on their minds. Oh me...I can't help it either. Do you think Noreth could be my self-insert here? :>) Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's always a pleasure to hear from you. Karen

daw the minstrel · 9 March 2005 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: Legolas

It's very interesting to hear Legolas's voice here. He's so much more into this than Daeron is. He's serious and responsible, like a king's son, but he's also able to laugh with Daeron. I see trouble ahead!

Author's reply

Hi Daw, Legolas does have a more positive view of the games than Daeron. I see Legolas as optimistic and seeing the best in people and circumstances when he can. Daeron is a little more cynical and less trusting of others. Daeron also has such a keen insight into people that it's hard for him to dismiss his feelings. Legolas is kind and openhearted and somewhat innocent. I hope they sort of balance one another. Trouble ahead? Now, why would you say such a thing? Thanks for reading and reviewing! Karen

Bodkin · 7 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

I love Seregon and Aldamir as big brothers - they are so affectionately cynical about their little siblings. And getting them onto the subject of Daeron and spiders makes my toes curl - I am keeping my fingers crossed for some big spider action here. And the lovely Elenna! Aldamir is such a serious bunny - he needs the delights of falling for a maiden. And such a maiden! I hope it will not take him too long to 'evaluate the situation'. There are some lovely references to past indiscretions: 'the wine pantry incident', the gardening sentence . . . I hope to discover more. Sitting next to Elenna at table! 'Suddenly it dawned upon me that my naneth’s hand was written all over this arrangement.' The poor boy is lost! He seems to be a willing victim, though, so I'll withhold sympathy.

Author's reply

LOL! I love your reviews. Yes, spiders.... I can't even wrap my brain around what it must be like to run into such big spiders. I'm sure Daeron will react better than I would. At least he'll be armed! I'd want a can of Raid! A very BIG can! I think you're right about Aldamir; he's a goner. And for as good a warrior as he is, he's a complete novice in the affairs of the heart. In a discussion about writing, a friend told me about attending a writer's conference where the speaker said that you should have your character do something he would never think of doing. This is sort of the tact I've taken with Aldamir in this situation. He would never fall in love so quickly and completely, so of course, that's what I let him do. And with a maiden who will give him a run for his money! So, a 'willing victim'? Great way to put it. Elenna came along at just the right time. He was ready and got on that rollercoaster as fast as a kid with a free ticket! Past indiscretions have a way of popping back up, don't they? The wine pantry incident is written and needs to be cleaned up. I did it some time ago to try and get hold of the personality of poor, long-dead Tarondor, the father of Seregon and Daeron. I address the gardening episode briefly in this story's latter chapters...unless my beta rips it out! Thanks, Bodkin. Your review started my day off great! Karen

Elena Tiriel · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

Ah, I love Aldamir and Seregon together. "The decks are awash with testosterone," to offer the single good quote from an otherwise execrable movie, whose name I (fortunately) don't even remember. I love that these guys are so comfortable with each other, and that Aldamir doesn't feel any need to protect himself from his buddy's prying questions. Then, there's Elenna. Aldamir doesn't know what to make of her at all! It's awfully difficult to respond to observations that are extremely accurate, and for them to come from someone he hardly knows (and a *gasp* female, too!) must have made for an awkward feeling... LOL! Look forward to the next chapter, Karen! - Barbara

Author's reply

Everyone needs a good buddy. Aldamir and Seregon have always had each other and this is a good thing, I think. I imagine it would be tough, in their position, to make many really good friends outside of the family. Not impossible, just tough. Being in command sets one apart by itself, but the fact that they are the king and queen's son and nephew puts more pressure on them. Elenna did shock him. For starters, she was awfully bold to say something so personal to him. The icing on the cake was that she was also accurate in her assessment of him. Took him completely off-guard. But he sure does like her! We'll see.... Thanks, Barbara. I'm so glad that you're reading. And it's very kind of you to take the time to review. Karen

Elena Tiriel · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

Oh, another story about that wacky duo, Daeron and Legolas! I can't wait to see what you put them through... not to mention, what they put others through. May I offer Belas as a target? Hee hee hee... Not to worry, I think you have big plans for them all... - Barbara

Author's reply

Hi Elena Tiriel! This little training mission was intended by the masters to be a tough go, but even the most well planned things can go awry. Add Daeron and Legolas to the mix and the whole thing is bound to unravel. And Belas would make a good target, wouldn't he? He's such a jerk. But fun to write. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the story. Karen

Nilmandra · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

Please tell me he kissed her! He is being obstinate, not seeing what she is trying to say (I got it *hmmphh*). Well, he is certainly head over heels in love, and soon he will know it too. I am looking forward to seeing Daeron's reaction when he meets his first big spider.

Author's reply

Well...not in this chapter. No kissing yet. Give the boy time. He's a little shy...and obstinate. Nah, he didn't get it. Elenna scares the dickens out of him, but he's a goner. Oh.h.h.h. the spiders.... They're so big and ugly. And they hiss and talk. They give me the creeps too. Poor Daeron. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this! Karen

Karri · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

Nice chapter. :-) Your OCs are very real and likeable. Great work! That is not always easy to accomplish.

Author's reply

Thanks, Karri. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. For me, I think it's probably easier to write OC's since no one has any expectations for them like they do canon characters. I'm really pleased that my OCs have come across as likeable and realistic to you. And I've enjoyed writing them. Thanks again! Karen

perelleth · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

Oh my! The king's heir's being tracked and hunted down! Game, Set and Match? Thanks Seregon gave him useful advice, pity he did not have the time put it into practice... the girl is quite shrewd! She's doing a far better job in this! Any chance he might be regaining his footing anytime soon? And poor Daeron. They should have noticed by now that his phobia could be turned into something very useful, like an elven spider detector, or something? I'm afraid when Aldamir says "his time is running out" he truly means his time is running out... Has Aldamir been plotting with Authoress?

Author's reply

LOL! I'm not sure that Aldamir has a chance. He's a little unschooled in the wily ways of the female folk. Mainly, he hangs around with grunting, aggressive warriors. But his mama did teach him manners. He'll muddle through. And Elenna is very perceptive about him. Match point--Elenna. Daeron would be a good spider detector! He must have spidey-sense. Unfortunately, he goes to pieces when he runs across one. Poor guy. His time is running out! I just happen to know this. Aldamir is putty in my hands. Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I'm tickled to death that you're here and enjoying this story. Karen

perelleth · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

Oh my! Where has all this nice Mirkwood been hiding? (rather, what have I been reading, I wonder?) Deep in Sunday procrastination I ran into this story, and noticed there were precedents, so I went to check them dutifully and... now I wonder how I have been able to do without Daeron's how-to survive-life guide. He's so fun! An almost irreverent, close to earth account of Greenwood's royal family and affairs is just what was needed! I love Daeron's euphemistic approach to life, oh, yes, count me in!

Author's reply

Welcome! The Greenwood is always pleased to have visitors. The king is not nearly as grumpy as some assume. I'm so glad you stumbled in our door. And I'm most pleased that you enjoyed the tale. Daeron is a fun character to write. I imagine that we all have irreverent thoughts at times, but good manners prevent us from saying them out loud. That's the beauty of rambling around in Daeron's head; he lets us see those thoughts. I've done this story a little different than the first one. Each chapter will be from a different character's POV. I enjoyed doing it this way. It gave me a chance to get to know the others more intimately. But I'm most comfortable in Daeron's head. I', sure you know about all that 'stretching' to try new things stuff.... I hope I've not stretched too far! Thanks again for reading and reviewing. What a delightful treat for me to hear from you. Karen

Manderly · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

My, Elenna is rather bold and poor Aldamir is reduced to putty in her hands. I certainly hope that her interest in him is genuine and that she's not just playing with him. She's a very interesting character and I can't quite decide how I feel about her yet. So bring on more chapters so that I can make up my mind about her. The little discussion between Aldamir and Seregon at the beginning was very entertaining. Daeron as an automatic spider sensor of all spiders within a hundred leagues of him? His fellow novices should consider themselves lucky to have him around then as they can do away with scouting, at least when spiders are concerned anyway. The very idea of Daeron's would be guard holding him up and battling spiders at the same time was certainly enough to send me into giggles. Great chapter!

Author's reply

Hello Manderly! Elenna is a bit bold, isn't she? She's got Aldamir's number, and he's completely off balance with her. I don't think he's used to this feeling. We'll have to see how this 'crush' turns out. There's always more to people than we see at first glance. I'll not say more because I'm very interested in how you react to her as the story progresses. I enjoyed allowing Aldamir and Seregon to have a discussion without anyone else around. My hope was that their personalities would emerge when they were not playing the role of commanders. Poor Daeron. He sure did pick a bad phobia considering where he lives. Like Aldamir said, Daeron has a little time yet before he has to battle the nasty beasts. A little time. Oh, poor Daeron. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I love your reviews and always enjoy hearing from you.

French Pony · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

“And if she does not return this?” I said, feeling my chest tighten. “Then you will have the answer to where this might have gone. If you do not try, then you will never know.” Best advice ever given. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. Seregon is a very wise Elf, and Aldamir should be very grateful to be related to him. And it looks as though Elenna has been the one to take Seregon's advice about going out to get what you want. If courtship is a hunting game, Aldamir suddenly finds himself the prey. You snooze, you lose. Daeron's issues with spiders have foreshadowing written all over them. I sense, with my spidey-senses, upcoming Wacky Hijinks. . .

Author's reply

Hi French Pony! You're absolutely right! If one does not ask for what they want, then the chance is gone. Aldamir does recognize how fortunate he is to have Seregon. In the past, I think he's probably been a little to content to confine his time to family and having Seregon around has made this a little too easy. But everyone needs a good friend. Seregon is certainly that. He's loyal and devoted and probably a little more willing to take risk of the heart than Aldamir. And yes, Elenna is not afraid to go after what she wants. She wants to know what makes Aldamir tick. He's like no one she has ever known before. I laughed when I read what you said about Aldamir being the prey. Yes, indeedy. Your spidey-senses are well honed. Daeron will not be pleased. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I'm always pleased to hear from you. Your reviews are always so much fun. Karen

daw the minstrel · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

Oh, oh. Aldamir and Elenna sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. They wish. She seems so good for him. And her understanding of his character is so sharp. I also like the scene with Aldamir and Seregon. They really are comfortable with one another. You do the change of voice with the different first person POV quite well. That's hard, I think.

Author's reply

Hi Daw! Elenna's got his number. Scared him, though. I don't imagine many people outside of the family talk to him so freely. Fortunately, he found this fascinating. I'm surprised that you didn't notice your contribution to the scene. I recall a warm summer day on a porch in the mountains when you suggested that Thranduil would find his son amusing when he told the lovely lass that he had been commanding a long time. Daw's thumbprint is all over that one. Thanks for the idea. And thanks for the kind words about changing voices. One of the reasons I did each chapter from a different POV was to try and get hold of each character's personality. I felt like I was struggling with individual voices, and I'm glad to hear that Aldamir's was distinct. I appreciate you reading and reviewing...and adding your kind suggestions back when the days were warmer and the company great. Karen

meckinock · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

I bet Legolas and Daeron aren't the only Elves in Mirkwood to think Aldamir and Seregon are a couple of dull (as a rusted blade!), serious and duty-bound bookends. Frequently that's how people in positions of great responsibility appear to the outside -- so it's quite intriguing to peel back the dress uniform and catch them where they're most comfortable -- with each other! Where would a guy be without a buddy to tell him he doesn't know anything about women, or to offer to whip him into shape before the training officer finds out how soft he's gone? These guys are a hoot. I like their wager over the outcome of the Melda-Celelion re-match, and their comparison of courting to warfare and hunting. The male outlook is universal, isn't it? It's all the same - hunt, kill, mate. The only thing they lack is football... Naneth's not-so-subtle matchmaking was cute. Poor Aldamir; he's trying to make the moves on a girl with his father watching. Ouch. Quite the tactical challenge. Elenna sure seems impressed with him, though. Can't wait to see where that goes...I liked the conversation about a commander being responsible for what happens; for good or ill. That one'll come back and haunt him, I'm sure. And I do hope we get to read about the infamous Wine Pantry Incident sometime. Great chapter, your Queenliness!

Author's reply

Howdy Ranger, I like the idea of seeing the two dull commanders on their private turf. What the public sees and what goes on behind closed doors is often quite different, I think. And Aldamir and Seregon know one another so well that when they are alone, pretense would be a waste of energy. I like what you said about the universal male outlook. Hunt, kill, mate! Oh so true.... Maybe the skills trial will make up for not having any pigskins and pads to get their jollies. I believe the queen is itching to get out that old rocking chair. All she needs is a cooperative son and a willing maiden. She's just doing her job, ya know. I kind of cringed a little too at Thranduil listening to Aldamir and Elenna's conversation. I don't think the king is normally an eavesdropper, but this conversation was just too good to ignore. I can trace this scene directly to a porch in the mountains, a minstrel rocking contently and saying: "I know! You should...." This close parental involvement adds to the tactical challenge that Aldamir's love has always been. Oh, so wise, Ranger of the Barren Wasteland. Yes...for good or ill. That will come back to haunt him. The Pantry Incident? I'll see if I can reveal this at some point without being assigned night duty for a month. Some commanders are so touchy. Thanks for the review and for all your help. Author Reply: tactical challenge that Aldamir's love has always been. Love LIFE! His love LIFE! Where's my beta? I can't even write an author's reply without screwing it up!

Leaward · 6 March 2005 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Aldamir

Wow, Elenna has quite the insight into Aldamir! It's nice to see his confusion about her though rather than that instant "she's the one" feeling. Another great chapter -- and looking forward to more. (Your reviews make mine look horrible -- I wish I could offer such depth as yours.)

Author's reply

Hi Leaward, Yes, Elenna is quite perceptive. And she's fascinated by him. After getting a good look at Aldamir, I'd say the interest is mutual. But she's thrown him off balance, and he's not quite sure what to think. Please, never apologize for your reviews! They're great. I'm so pleased--and appreciative--that you took the time to read and review that all I can do is smile. Thanks again, Karen

Karri · 5 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

So this is Daeron. It is very nice to make his acquaintance. :-)

Author's reply

Yes, and welcome. Daeron is pleased to meet you too. He's always happy to make new friends. Thanks for stopping by. Daeron said to tell you that he hopes to see you again. :>) Karen

terryb · 4 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

This is a great start. I particularly like Daeron's voice and his way of viewing the world; it's colorful and amusing (boggy hay, punished further for having the audacity to live, his desire to guard the wine cellar.) He's great fun to 'listen' to. I can't wait to see what trouble Daeron and Legolas get into in the Endurance Games. I'm sure Belas will pose no problem at all.

Author's reply

Thanks, Terryb! I'm so pleased that you're enjoying this tale so far. Daeron is a fun character to 'listen' to for me too. He's a good guy, but he does have a different spin on things usually. The Endurance Games were well named, I think. The masters intend to push the novices to their limits and with the help of Belas, I think we might find out just where Legolas and Daeron's limits are. Belas has been a fun guy to write too. He's such a jerk. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I plan to have chapter two up in a few days. Daeron and Legolas hope to see you there! Karen

Nilmandra · 4 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

Hey, Rolly really did get you to post! My memory of how hilarious I found Daeron had diminished somewhat, but he has restored it to fine form. His euphemisms are great - warg's and warts and boggy hay. There is a Belas in every group, isn't there? I have some predictions for how Alar will do, as well as Belas. And Seregon and Aldamir...what torment to have younger brothers? What a pain they are! But in this case, the older have authority over the younger, so they can limit the smart remarks. Or, at least dump water into their wine! So, this is done..when do we chapter 2? And cute jammies, btw.

Author's reply

That cat was a slave driver! Whew! The fur was flying. I imagine we all know a Belas or two. Such personalities are such easy pickings. You can be over the top with writing them and still look perfectly sane. I guess that's because they're so insane to start with. I imagine you're pretty accurate in your predictions about Belas and Alar. Of course, they'll have some help in working out their problems. Or maybe, the helpers will just create new ones. But they mean well. Being the youngest, I can't say much about how it feels to have younger siblings, but I do have experience in tormenting older ones. And I'd say--from my perspective--that the older ones enjoy reminding the younger ones that they are older, bigger and in charge. I got a phone call from my older brother last night dressing me down for not telling him I was going to be out of town. I did...he's just getting old and forgetful. I suspect that Seregon watered the younger ones' wine with a smile and hearty chuckle of devilish glee. I've not decided what my posting schedule will be. But I won't wait too long between chapters. Every few days or so, I guess. You just had to mention the ranger's betrayal, didn't you? If I had known I was going to be on display, I'd have combed my hair or something. But in case she's feeling mighty proud of herself, let me just remind one and all that I also have pictures! Thanks for reading and reviewing, Nilmandra. It's always a treat for me to hear from you. Karen

French Pony · 4 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

Oh my goodness, Belas! I know people like him. There's one in every group. There was even a guy in my bibliography class last semester who was like that, and that's grad school. And, of course, the masters make long speeches about the value of learning Group Cohesion and Togetherness to a bunch of hormonal adolescents whose only desire is to torture each other to death slowly. Grownups always do that.

Author's reply

LOL! You're right; there's a Belas lurking in every group. If these people weren't so annoying, I'd almost feel sorry for them. They obviously have problems. And the adult ones are the worst. They don't even have the excuse of being young and stupid. The master's speech was reminiscent of some speeches I've heard through the years. These speeches always paint a happy picture of group effort, when in reality, everything comes down to survival of the most clever tormentor. I really appreciate you taking the time to read and review. It's such a treat to hear from you. I hope you don't have anymore classes with 'your Belas'. Makes me shudder. Thanks again, Karen

Leaward · 4 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

I love the imagery you create: "They dropped like boggy hay" ..."being dumber than a rotting log" ... "inadequate as a maiden with a wart on my nose." Where do you come up with them! Wonderfully evocative. And the phrase "big bad warg’s rump", I am going to have to remember that one ... I've been searching for insults that could be used within ME for quite a while. Nothing like calling someone a horse's, um, well, a warg's rump! What a wonderful command you have with words to be able to bring such images to life. And the story of Legolas in training, and your OMC watching him, makes me want to read more. And isn't there always a Belas in a group. I am now waiting impatiently for the next chapter ....

Author's reply

Leaward of the Dunadain! What's this? A ranger in the Greenwood? Welcome! :>) I'm so glad you enjoyed the first chapter. The rest of the story is written and hopefully, I'll keep a good schedule in posting. ME insults... Maybe insults just come easier to me than you. :>) You're too polite to say nasty things to people. I, on the other hand... You've just got to think in more derogatory terms! Daeron does tutor if you need help. I truly appreciate your kind words. I've enjoyed writing this story, even though it did take me longer to get it done than it took the UN to achieve nuclear disarmament. And yeah, we all know a Belas. Maybe Legolas and Daeron can help us deal vicariously with our own RL bullies. Though come to think of it, that might not be a good idea. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I'm so glad to see you in my fair woods...the part without spiders. Karen

Oh goody! I absolutely loved Serious Trouble so I am glad to see this cast of characters back in action. And older too--I already like what I can see of how they have grown. You have a lot of room for excitement in this story. I'm looking forward to seein how it develops.

Author's reply

Hi Elliska! The guys have grown up now to where they sit smack in the middle of the teenage years--in Elf years, of course. They're young enough to still use shaky judgment and old enough to really find trouble. But they mean well. I'm glad to read that you're pleased to find this motley crew back and didn't run screaming when they showed back up. I hope you'll enjoy the remainder of the story. It's all written, and I plan to post another chapter soon. I've not decided on an exact schedule just yet. But I don't plan to take too long between chapters. Thanks for reading and reviewing, Elliska. It's always a pleasure to hear from you. So...when can we expect an update from you? I don't mean to be pushy or anything, but if it'll help.... Karen

daw the minstrel · 4 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

God, I love Daeron. "the big bad warg's rump" LOLOL It's interesting to see Legolas react to Daeron's voiced unwillingness to go on this upcoming trip. He "whips" his head around, and that word "whips" tells it all. He's startled that someone wouldn't want to do this training. And he's confident in his own skill with a bow, which is nice to see. And also confident in his reception by the girls! Daeron's fear of spiders is both hilarious and unfortunate, given where he lives! The boys are funny as they admire the maiden with Aldamir. I guess they've grown up some since the last time we saw them. I like the "fine blown glass vase" comparison. And I like the way Daeron thinks of Isilya as potentially "one of us." I think he's probably right that Aldamir wouldn't appreciate them counseling him about Elenna's previous love life. The last thing he needs is these two upstarts watching him. That Seregon took Aldamir's night duty is a tribute to their friendship and understanding. But wow, Daeron and Legolas are cruising for trouble with Belas. I look forward to it!

Author's reply

Hi daw, Legolas and Daeron do have differing opinions on going on these games. Legolas is eager to go despite knowing how difficult they'll be. Daeron, on the other hand, really doesn't like the idea of being miserable, but he understands that this will be good for him--sort of like having to eat peas. Daeron still doesn't like creepy, crawly things with eight legs. But he's growing up and only time will tell. Spiders are going to be hard avoid considering where he lives. Poor Daeron. The guys have grown up and have come to an age where they appreciate a pretty girl. Even though Daeron might enjoy watching the lovely Elenna, he still has eyes for Isilya. And no, the commander would not take kindly to his youngest kinsmen meddling in his love life. But they are watching! Better than reality TV. Aldamir and Seregon are close. They've always had each other and find safety and comfort with one another. They trust each other completely. I would think placing personal trust in someone outside the family would difficult for them considering who they are. But they have each other and the bond is strong. And yep, you're right; Belas is trouble. Who better to stir up even more trouble than two well-meaning, little busy bodies like Legolas and Daeron? They're just trying to help! Thanks for reading and reviewing. Karen

meckinock · 4 March 2005 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: Daeron

Dang, when you said you were ready to post I didn't know you meant NOW! This'll have to be quick... I love Belas the Bellower. Somehow I don't think he realizes what he's up against this time, though. Although neither do Legolas and Daeron... I really like the easy camaraderie between your two young scamps. Their personalities are distinct but they are entirely comfortable with and trusting of one another. It's interesting to see their different take on the upcoming games, though - Legolas is much less cynical of authority than Daeron! He seems to take the Games as a necessary evil, while Daeron doesn't really see the point of being tortured for torture's sake. Love Legolas's line: "I know she is quite beautiful. Wonder why she is talking to Aldamir?" Hoot! That's a younger brother for you. And already snooping around where he shouldn't be... Well, I guess you know what kind of arrows to shoot birds with now, so my work is done. Even though I already kinda know where this is headed, it's fun to sit back and enjoy the ride!

Author's reply

I puttered around with this last night and decided to bite the bullet and subject myself to ridicule. I had no idea that public humiliation was brewing over on your Lj or I might have waited. Two vulnerable moments might prove too much for my delicate disposition. Legolas and Daeron do have slightly different views of the games. I think Legolas is actually looking forward to going despite knowing that the games will be difficult. Daeron, on the other hand, sees no real good reason to be miserable if he can avoid it. Yeah, Legolas can't see for the life of him what a beautiful maiden would see in his brother. I can, but then, I'm a girl. An old girl, but a girl nonetheless. Yep, I've stored that bird arrow knowledge and it might just pop up at any time now. Thanks for all your help. Since daw's already pointed out one of my boo-boos this morning, I should amend my thanks to you for beta reading with a disclaimer that I can still screw things up even with you looking over my shoulder. It's a tough job even for a ranger. Thanks again for everything. Karen

Well, how fresh and funny. Sounds like mischief is brewing, and Legolas and Daeron are just the pair to instigate it! Daeron is too funny! I laughed all the way through this first chapter. Daeron is quite expressive, isn't he? Can't wait for the next chapter. Belas's downfall and Alar's vindication. Bring it on, and let the Games begin (the Endurance Games, of course)! Great start to a great story, Karenator.

Thank you, Brenda! What a relief to read that you found it funny! My sense of humor--or is it Daeron's?--is slightly warped at times and to find that others share this slightly deranged view of the world pleases me to no end. The games will be a little more than our little friends are expecting, but well, what fun would it be for everything to go smoothly? The whole story is written and posting should go off without a hitch. Though whatever Daeron and Legolas are involved in usually goes awry. Let's just say, I hope nothing goes to pot with posting. Thanks again for reading and reviewing. Karen

I just love Daeron. His perspective on love, life and laundry is just so wonderful. And, hopefully, he and Legolas will manage to subdue the bellowing Belas without getting into trouble. Although I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks, Bodkin. Belas is trouble on two feet, but the Mirkwood duo think they've got his number. Funny how people can fool you sometimes. Just when you thought you had everything under control.... As for subduing Belas without getting into trouble? This is Legolas and Daeron we're talking about, you know. They mean well, but things never seem to go as planned. I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter. I really appreciate you reading and reviewing. This story took me forever to write...just slow...but I enjoyed writing it. It pleases me to no end to know that you found it entertaining. Thanks again! Karen

Oh goody! A new story of the adventurous duo and this first chapter aleady has me in chuckles and giggles. The dialogue, as usual, was very witty and entertaining. So the two ellings are a little older now but I don't suppose their penchant to get into trouble is any less. Looking forward to see what adventure/trouble you have in store for them.

Hi Manderly! I've been working on this for so long, you'd think I was writing War and Peace. The guys are a little older now. The glorious teenage years--young enough to still embrace trouble as a pastime and old enough to really find it. I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter. I have the whole story written so updating should flow fairly easily. I've been pestering the ranger for the past week to beta and she's now exhausted and muttering something about spiders in her sleep. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I'm always thrilled to hear from you...in review AND especially when you post your stories. Karen
