· Chapter 28: A Valuable Tool
I guess it would be pretty hard for Daevan to try and reason with the dwarves but he proves himself quite apt in this regard too. Greedy dwarves, though they do have their uses. And what, perchance, made this young man imagine he could bypass the orcs unseen? Oh. It was you that did that. I'd almost forgotten since I got so wrapped up in the storytelling. Good thing the rope held. Your statement that 'he tried to forget that he would be stuck forever in this cleft if the rope tore apart' was chilling. Brrrrr! Honestly, Strider never lets up. What a (fantasy) guy! So admirable! So...now wait a minute. I'm starting to sound like a fangirl again. Ah, why not. BTW, planning on watching Alatriste? (You know, the new Viggo movie)...I think I could put up with subtitles in this case. Back to your story. (I feel like a reporter for some TV newscast). The Hammer of Aule! Wow! Silly dwarves. Can't decide about them. They bicker constantly. But Strider's right. They NEED to get out of there. Will Daevan abandon him? Of course not. At least, I don't imagine it happening.
Sorry for the incredibly long time it took me to review. But as always, it's a treat to read your stories. Hope you are doing well.

Your last fan-fic for LOTR for a time? I grieve this is so, but rejoice that I had the chance to read it.
And I look forward to the time you return and we read more.
Thank you for so much.
Author's reply
You're very welcome. Like Mr. Bond I'd say 'never say never again', but my mind's set on other subjects right now. I loved writing the stories you see posted on this site, but I can only write when my heart's with it.
Thanks for reading and reviewing, Larner.

Yes, I am back and am trying to catch up again.
Lovely to catch Gollum relatively easily in the end. And good to see our Strider is working to keep going in spite of his injuries.
Now, to get out of there alive!

What a great ending! "Though I must say that your mouth is still faster than you sword." My heart leaped when Aragorn finally told Daeven who he truly is. Such a proud moment (I feel like a mom just bursting with pride during a graduation ceremony trying to hold back the tears!) Daevan have come a long way. I'm glad he's decided to stay with Aragorn.
Congratulations on your semi-final with "Castle"--love that story! Good luck with your other stories! I have no doubt you will aquire more fans! I do believe you have more ideas in that brilliant head of yours regarding my favorite Ranger. You did leave it with "Would I do you a favor if I recommend you to my old friend Halbarad to make a Ranger out of you?"

I was so very surprised and sad that this story came to such an abrupt end. I didn't expect it at all... :o(
But I am glad that I overcame my instinctive dislike of AU stories, and gave yours a chance. I truly enjoyed it, and was always happy to see it updated.
Though at times, I felt you leave all of the work for Daevan, and do not give our other hero enough credit, but then the whole story was more about Daevan, so I coul forgive that. :o)
I hope we shall see more stories about him... As a Ranger! :oD

I just loved the ending to this story which caught me entirely by surprise as I feared it would be a "Goodbye, maybe we'll meet again one day"
I like to imagine Daervan as one of Aragorn's Grey Company in LOTR.
Good luck with your current projects!I hope one day you will write another LOTR story for you portray these characters, especially Aragorn,so beautifully.

Ah, the dwarves have their treasure and on their way home. Grima really is a slimeball. Good idea of Aragorn's to make Daevan a ranger, he will make a good one. Besides now that Strider, has let on who his is, better to keep an eye on him.
The UPS man, heard all the rucus and made it out of Moria, he slipped past everyone. A passing troll told him that Strider could be found in the north. Actually the troll said " oh look lunch, I wonder if it is tasty". But trolls do mumble so! Since the package does contain a safety helmet, which Strider will need later on in the Two Towers, when he falls off a cliff, it is a good thing that the Ups man and his St Bernard, are still on the job.
OK, on to other things, I loved this story, as I have loved your others, and do hope to see more from you again. Please!!!!!

Grumpy, your ideas are simply wonderful! Thanks so much for your support! I will miss your witty comments, but right now I can't think of writing Aragorn again. Yet I won't say never...

Yeah they made it out of Moria, with the hammer and Gollum. Plus new friendships between the dwarves and the men. If they look arround them, they might find a package of bandages. The man that was bringing it to them (not the ups man), was rescued by Lassie (seems his name is Timmmy). Anyways on his way down the stairs, he left it by a rock, that is shaped like a duck.
Author's reply
LOL! OK, I need a moment to calm down and take a breather. Well, grumpy, that was hilarious. Ah, well, Moria's wonderland... But, wait, where's the UPS man? Got an Orc to sign his clipboard? Got out? Watched the fight and headed straight back to his motorcycle? Or did he come by horse to not frighten the poor inhabitants of Middle-earth? Let's hope for him that he won't get a package to be delivered to the Balrog...

A couple of your reviews were saying goodbye to you as if you are going to retire from writing. Are you done? Are you really retiring? If so, I am very sad about this. I really hate to see you go as I have enjoyed this fic and your other two as well (Castle 1 & 2 and Twilight of the Gods). If it is, I just want to say a big Thank You for entertaining me.

Ha! they are out! and they won! but even more important they won the trust of the dwarves , which is not a thing that easy to do I might add. I really admire Daevan and how hes grown on this journey ,if not for him I think Aragorn might have been a goner long ago.(and Im glad the bad guys got what was coming to them)
Author's reply
Loved that wording "might have been a goner". Sums up pretty nicely what would have happened to the *hero* of Tolkien's novel without his sidekick.

Wait...hold on...say, stop already...Whoa I say! Wow! My heart is still pounding after reading this chapter. You really know how to create excitement. I was totally enthralled the whole way through and there were a number of scenes where I could actually picture this happening like the scenes from FOTR. Incredible writing. Daevan has grown up in a hurry, Strider is as valiant as ever, and the orcs...well, what can I say? Their sheer lack of 'organizational skills' coupled with consummate badness just make them the villains we love to hate! Hmmmm. Nasty promise Gurim makes here -- Strider and Daeven better be careful or they'll end up as orc stew! Ew...that just sounded wrong. Oh well...BTW, I've been watching the original Sharpe series. Bean does look quite yummy I must say and the show (other than some incredibly cheesy music on occasion) is very well done. Sorry for the horribly long delay in reviewing. RL, you know...I have a feeling your story will be drawing to a close soon, but if that's so, it must give you a good feeling to be leaving on such a high note. Excellent writing 'Timmy'. It's been a joy to share the fandom with you. See you at the next chapter.
Author's reply
Hi Viggomaniac,
yes, RL becomes a burden some times *g*. Same here. Thanks for your knds words anyway. Hope your heart stood the challenge and has calmed down now. Daevan truly had no chance to stay the innocent lad from the marshes, had he? Not in this universe, so to say. Glad I could entertain you and yes, the story's ending is drawing closer. I am always amazed at how long it takes from writing to complete posting. Gee!
Bean as 'Sharpe' is best you can get. There are some other movies I'd recommend. If you find the time we can chat that on a PM base. What do you think?

Alright, they reached the gate, I do hope they get way past it. Glad to see that Strider is still on his feet, Poor Daevan is in need of some bandages, as are the rest of the party. Remember Daevan you must not use the axe.
Ups man has caught sight of a large group of orcs, is heading after them, still hoping to get his clipboard signed. Has a few choice words to say to his boss.
Author's reply
Wasn't there someone around with bandages and a large, large first aid kit? That man should head to the small fighting group before the men and Dwarves collapse on the steps.
UPS man is of encouraging persistence. Someone, who really knows what *dedication to the job* means. I recommend him for a promotion. If he makes it.

Was able to borrow a bit of computer time tonight. Love the use of Aule's hammer against the orcs, and truly doubt the Vala of the Earth will begrudge it. Aule himself probably helped Daevan wield it.
And to see the different reactions is wonderful as well.
Hope to catch up in a few days' time.

A forsaken place? A mighty town it once was! A Dwarves' Haven! OK, just the Dwarves talking. But with some songs sung in the hall and torches on the walls, it could be a nice place, couldn't it?

I am glad that Aragorn was able to tell Daevan a little about the sword that his grandfather gave to him. Daevan is becoming quite good with it. I love that part about making sure not to fall over a cliff, with the axe. Hey they have Gollum, better with them, then with the orcs.
Ups man is currently in the 21st hall. He has become quite frantic, and keeps trying to get the orcs to sign his clipboard. The orcs, just run from him in terror. I think it has to do with his headlamp, makes him look like he has a glowing third eye.
Author's reply
Glad to learn that the UPS man is still with us in Moria. Would be such a pity to lose him. LOL! And what a fancy kind of *weapon* he has. Probably they consider the pen and clipboard like some magic thing that would turn them into... well, I won't say!
