I, too, love the assumption that Strider MUST be the son of Thorongil, and have played with it in my own stories.
Love the feeling of realism you give to the entire journey, and the moment between Nelin and Aragorn. Am, of course, looking forward to the next update.

I enjoyed seeing Aragorn as a healer in this chapter. So sad that there are always those who remain suspicious and ungrateful of those who are there to protect and help. It was touching, yet painful, when he set the little girl's arm. Nicely done.
Author's reply
They are simple villagers, and strangers have to be regarded with scepticism. But, yes, they should be grateful after he risked so much for them.
Thanks for your review.

You thought I abandoned this story, didn't you? NEVER!!! This is among my favourites now and every time I see there is an update, excitement surges through me.
I loved how you wrote about the battle. Somehow, there was afew line at least about everything, about every kind of reaction.
But I loved the after effects of the fight too. That though it was quite a great thing, it came with losses. As always. But I am so glad they did this well.( at least considering the number of the orcs).
You know, Brandolla reminds me of my grandmother very much!:o)
And I can see I am not the only one, who loves Aragorn as a healer. :o) I simply do, and can't really explain why... Well, I may could, but it is hard.
My favorite part was the scene with Nilana and Nelin too. And not because I am a sadist, just because in a certain way, it was nice.
Well, Baeni... For a moment, I was angered at her words very much... Accusing 'the wanderer' of such things... (By the way, the Hungarian word for Strider was wanderer :o)) OK, I realized why she said those things but it was still hard to swallow.
Ah, and again the mysterious Strider for the end of this chapter... I really wonder how you will continue... Will this stoy be about the search for Gollum from now on? I would guess so. And Daevan should accompany him! But I am really not sure... Would you be so kind to clear up things a bit? Or you want it to be 'top secret'? :o)
Author's reply
Hi Laerien,
no, I didn't think you abandoned the story, no way... So thanks for the review. Hum, I really wouldn't want to spoil the mood of anticipation for all of you readers, so I have to keep the plot twists a secret, but - so much to say - the wanderer *has* to continue his search for Gollum. That's why he walked the Dead Marshes; that's why he left the village though he wasn't fully healed. There is no other choice for him than to leave again.
Yes, I loved writing the part with Aragorn and Nelin since it's the only chance to go back to his own childhood (and soothe the kid, of course...)

How very glad I am to see Aragorn in healing action, an activity I personally have ever felt he would have preferred to fighting. A wonderful surprise to all as they begin to realized this stranger is more than he appears, and has many facets to his personality and skills. I only feel sorry for the woman who cannot see what is, but reacts only to her own fears and suspicions--a worse malady in the end than many of the wounds they see about them.
Author's reply
Hi Larner,
well, why should all of the villagers praise Strider? I thought that the idea that he - as the stranger around - somehow caused all this evil to happen wasn't too farfetched.
Aragorn will always be healer first and king second *g*

Alright, they won. Who would have thought! Good thing that Aragorn is a healer too. I do believe that Bradolla is a little outnumbered by the wounded. Love the part where Aragorn fixes Nelin's broken arm, and confesses that he has had a few.

Hi grumpy,
if the villagers had lost it would've given the plot quite another twist... So, no, no captivity situation this time...

Glad you liked that last review. I *tried* to make it entertaining. Love the way you merge the smaller stories with the bigger one. Your OCs are so splendidly done even down to the little detail that Nilana had left Strider alone to rest. What a wonderfully caring person she is. Action scenes were intense and realistic and the writing as a whole (as with ALL your stories) tightly knit and exciting. I got the notice for the next chapter of 'Twilight of the Gods' and yes, what a bittersweet reading that is going to be. Almost done? I'll try not to cry too much. Wish I was feeling more witty tonight but I'm afraid you'll have to settle for this 'blah' review. (Although, I must confess, when I get a story alert from you I feel kind of like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh -- all excitable and bouncy)! As always, I'm So looking forward to the next chapter.
Author's reply
No, please, no crying at the end of a story. Twilight *really* is more a novel than a story and it *has* to end.
But for this one: the little details just slip in. First draft is mostly rough, and then within the polishing the picture becomes more detailed (getting its 'movie shape'). Some things, though, remain predictable (at least a little bit ).
I like the image of Tigger. Love him and Calvin. I just started telling my kids about them.

Your OCs are are brilliant, too! I especially like young Deavan. He needs to get out of that village! I wonder whether he still will want to leave the village and everybody behind, after the attack will be over.... I only hope his grandfather will survive... He's so cute! (the grandfather *g*)
I love it how you call Strider the "son of Thorongil"! It kind of gives him a misterious air.

I liked the way the villagers reacted. I think everybody has his or her own way of accepting this kind of news. Of course they are afraid, I would be so terrified that I am not sure if I would be able to act instead of weeping as some of the women did, but they have a leader. A wonderful leader. Own their own they would be lost, but following this wanderer's orders is not that difficult. :o)
“You can barely stand, so who do you think you are? The King himself?”
>:o/ It wasn't the first time during this story that I wanted to simply slap that idiot! (and I fear this wasn't the last either)
You said it is good to know what I liked the most. Well, this time:
“You have to stand and fight or you will be destroyed.”
“We cannot fight!” another man cried. “We are fishermen, not soldiers!”
Strider swivelled around and shouted:
“Then you will defend your people as best you can! There is no other way!”
I love your OC characters! (But I think I mentioned this before :o) )

I'm afraid my reviews tend to sound somewhat repetitious. After all, it's hard to say 'marvelous', 'excellent', etc., TOO many different ways. But I'll try. Okay, picture this: you're at the movie theater and the movie previews come on screen. That guy -- you know -- the one with the low, barely contained excitement in his voice -- begins speaking in hushed solemnity:
"ONE man. (closeup of Strider looking sexy) ONE choice. (closeup of Strider struggling to get back to the village and STILL looking sexy) ONE chance (closeup of Strider speaking urgently to the clueless villagers, the men looking annoyed, the women -- well, you know)...TRAPPED in a village where time stands still...where strangers aren't welcome...where danger lurks...where NO ONE believes him...ONE man. ONE choice. NO chance...(camera pans to horde of orcs running towards the village and THEN, to black. Female viewers realizes those quick screenshots of Aragorn are gone already...what the????) This will ONLY make sense if they do movie previews in Germany the same way they do them here in the U.S.)...
Okay, lame, lame, lame. Loved the chapter, as always. Great work with the villagers' reluctance to believe that there is any danger, with Gaellyn's suspicion, and Strider's determination to make them DO something! Very well done. I chuckled a bit over the description of the village guard. I'm sure that would be true if the guard never had been 'on guard'. When Doran tells the villagers that Aragorn is the son of Thorongil, what a vindicating moment. Little do they know...And Nilana is back. And she STILL wants to take care of him? Daevan's reaction was cute. Can't wait to see what happens next. Thanks for this terrific story.
Author's reply
Hi Viggomaniac,
shall I start repeating myself? You make my blush. Every time you write a review you should think of the consequences you put on the author, running around with her head deeply reddened and her kids asking mom what has happened!
Beautiful review, did I say that? I do have a kind of "movie" in mind when writing. The moment I start a scene the pictures just come to my mind. The way the village looks, the way the people react... And, of course, Aragorn looking sexy. Hell, what other push do I need??
Take care,

I can't understand how you are able to deal with so many original characters! And every one of them has is or her own story and character! I can truly admire this!
“There is no comfort for a soul that mourns.”
I think this is my favourite line (with all of its surroundings!)
I love how you capture the 'mysterious Strider'.That was the reason I fell in love with him at once when I read FotR.
"Daevan felt miserable listening to the whistling sound of Strider's breathing right behind him." I can understand him all too well! I have a friend who has asthma, and I can tell you, it is really like this to hear her choking on the very air itself! :o(
And the dark athmosphere was perfect! All the time, I could feel that something is going to change, that dark times are coming. And now the orcs... Good work!
Author's reply
Hi Laerien,
thanks for so much praise! That's truly kind of you! Original Characters - believe it or not - are by far easier handled than the CC because I have all freedom I want to develop them. I have to stay in character while writing Aragorn because every reader has a certain imagination how he should deal with incidents. So I cannot drift too far from that path (see your own expectation to have him 'mysterious'). But all other men and women are free to go in every direction I need them to go. If it is Gaellyn's distrust or Nilana's care...
I am very glad you let me know your favorite lines. It's a pleasure to learn how much a story is cherished. Thanks.

I am truly sorry for not reviewing. I ave to admit firstly I was just a bit lazy, but then this story caused such mixed feelings in me, that I had to pull myself together. It is really hard to review it, I tell you.
Don't worry, nothing is wrong with it, quite the contray!! It is very well-written, every character fits and the storyline (even though it is AU) is completely believeable! That's why I decided (with a bit nagging from a friend who was absolutely right) that you deserve to have encouragement.
You know, Daevan is very much like me. So much that it is disturbing at times.
“At least you reward us with surviving!" :o)
I liked the scene at the campfire very much. Especially when I reread it now, that I know that these 'simple', peaceful folks have to fight orcs. It had even a greater effect.
“When it comes to charity, many people fail. Nilana did not.” At last someone protected that poor woman from the teasing and bossing of others!
Author's reply
Hi Laerien,

I love Strider's "take charge" attitude! Very good chapter. You described the mounting fear and helplessnes of the village so well. Poor Nilana..she will always feel responsible for him. It seems Strider has a history of inadvertantly breaking women's hearts. I love that line "...when Strider gazed back to Daevan, the younger man ineffectively tried to hide his grin". It kind of made me smile too (although heartbreaking for Nilana). Can't wait for your next update.

Well done chapter. I like that not everyone just immediately believed him - how that Gaellyn is so suspicius of him. It makes it much more realistic. And you captured the fear of the villagers quite well. I like how you used Aragorn's sickness as one of the reason's that the people didn't listen at first - his voice wasn't as commanding as it had been earlier when he was feeling better. Nicely done.

Ah, the trials of unrequited love! Poor Nilana, seeing one she could honor and love as she did her lost husband, but who cannot love her in return, but still willing to serve him as she can out of the love and honor she gives so easily to this stranger whom she assumes is Thorongil's son. The irony that this IS Thorongil is a pleasant one to savor.

Missed this one while working, apparently.
Excellent depiction of the mood and feelings of all. The excitement of finding the crab to the loosing of the arrows at the uruk-hai was excellently depicted, followed by the return back to warn the villagers.
Love to see Strider in his element, still ill but insistent on doing his duty, seeking to go on, then realizing they must return and warn.
Beautifully depicted.

I am such a bad reviewer. I seem to have fallen into the habit of reviewing as soon as I see the next chapter posted but not before. But I don't like to read the new chapter before I review the last one. A peculiarity of mine. Poor Nilana. Still being badgered. All her hopes (that COULD be a bad pun) gone. The back story of what happened to Nilana's husband is quite intriguing. Kind of an awkward leave-taking for Aragorn. Daevan must REALLY be wondering what's going on after Strider relates Gollum's importance to him, albeit in a riddle like fashion. I like the way you introduced the orcs' presence with just a hint here and there. But I'm also glad that it appears that they will be heading back to the village post haste! "Up to now life was good." Strider remained silent, but his expression told Daevan more than he would have wanted to hear. Oh oh. Guess he didn't have a happy look on his face...This is one of those stories that I devour as soon as I can. I will recommend it anywhere I can. Oh yes. One more thing -- why doesn't Strider like fish? Okay, okay. I know. Of course I know. But I just couldn't resist asking. *Reviewer puts on fake innocent look*. Now, on to the next chapter.

Masterfully done, as usual. So many things going on in this fic. The undercurrent of tension between Baeni and Nilana is very intriguing. Perhaps Baeni would rather be in Nilana's shoes at this point (at least for the moment)? I'm not sure, she just seems mean-spirited and spiteful. Loved the way, with only a few softly spoken words, Aragorn was able to quiet the villagers' foolish and embarrassing teasing of Nilana. I should think it must have gotten somewhat wearisome for Aragorn to constantly have to hide his identity. He's used to it, but it would seem that you could never let your guard down. The son of Thorongil? Ironic, but then what else could the old man think? He's certainly close! Your OCs are so very well done. Now I am finding myself liking Daevan and Doran, too. Wonder if his grandfather's gift will come in handy in the future. Poor Strider. Having to go after Gollum again. The slimy creature. (C'mon, you KNOW I'm talking about Gollum and not Aragorn)! Is Aragorn really strong enough to renew his request or will he end up back in the village? Hard to say with you. Your stories always have so many twists and turns I feel good if I even guess a few things right. But then, what would be the fun of reading if I had it all figured out? Mesmerizing story.
