"Well, this is my hammer hand," Pippin said raising his right hand so that Frodo could look at it. "I might injure it writing and not be able to hammer anything tomorrow. I already have two sore thumbs and so if my hand cramps up from all of this writing then how will I hammer anything?"
ROFL!!! Oh, I do love the lad's reeasoning!!
Sam is wonderful. I want him to teach me carpentry ;)
Author's reply
Pippin is inventive, isn't he? Frodo just doesn't seem to be having the success that Sam is, does he? I also want to have Sam drop by and teach me carpentry. This whole thing is making me want to build something. Maybe a set of shelves like the ones that Frodo built? Thanks for the review!

Pippin should be good at creative writing with his creative excuses ;)
I'm glad to see Sam teach Pippin how to use a hammer without hurting himself even more. But you're torturing me, you know, with this whole business of why Pippin won't sleep in his room. I keep thinking of Merry's dream. I can't wait to find out the reason!
Author's reply
Torture? Me? No, surely not. I shall try to behave in a future chapter. The truth will have to come out at some point. LOL
Sam is doing a good job with his first carpentry student. Maybe this will be a new part-time career for him. Thanks so much for reading and for reviewing. More soon and answers in the near future. I promise.

Now, that is an excuse I've not heard before! "My hammer-hand" indeed! Yes, Frodo, you have your hands full with this one. And love Sam's patience and instruction as he slowly eases an overeager Took into driving nails!
As for the detective work--that is also pretty interesting. Now, fo find out exactly what the problem is....
This is continuing to be such great fun!
Author's reply
Glad you are still enjoying this one. Sam is making great progress with Pippin in the carpentry department but Frodo still hasn't instilled a love of writing in Pippin. Seems that some things are much harder to make enjoyable.
The detective work goes on and answers will turn up at some point, but with Pippin, you just never know what lies beneath the surface.
Thanks for the reviews!

OK, now I'm more bumfuzzled than Frodo about why Pippin's not staying in his room. And I know when you finally reveal it, I'll smack my forehead and call myself a ninnyhammer for not figuring it out!
I like Sam's hammering lessons--Sam's a wise hobbit, as well as a patient one. Too many times older people somehow think younger ones should just *know* things--whether they've been taught or not. It's hard to remember sometimes.
When my son was in the ninth grade, I had checked out the video of the old "Romeo and Juliet" (The old Zefirelli one from the sixties). I had just started watching it, and he came in, and decided to watch it with me. He was really getting into it, until the end. When he realized that the both of them *really* died, he got really ticked off. "Why didn't you *tell* me?" And it suddenly dawned on me that I had automatically expected him to just *know*--after all *everybody* knows that, don't they? But of course, he had not had to study the play yet in school, and he *didn't* know. He was very upset over it, too. It was kind of funny, but it was a lesson to me, too, not to assume what other people know.
Author's reply
I know what you mean. It is so easy to assume that some things are known by everyone. I have done that many times only to be reminded that everyone has to hear a thing for the first time at some point. (I have a friend who reminds me of your son in that she hates movies were a lead character dies. She has the rest of us conditioned to *warn* her if there will be a serious death in a film so that she can decide if she will actually want to see it!)
Sam must have realized that if he didn't give Pippin some instruction in hammering, that Pippin was likely to injure both of them. LOL This time it might have been more self-preservation than patients. He'd dodged that hammer once already.
It shouldn't be too much longer before Merry, Frodo and everyone else has an answer about the sleeping problem. This story can't be much longer, can it? LOl

Ya gotta give Pippin credit for creativity! Can't do his writing lesson for fear of cramping his hammer hand, lol! He's still making the mistake of thinking that just because trained adults make something look easy, it should *be* easy, and if it isn't, then he must just be bad at it and that's the end of it. I hope he learns from this whole thing that everyone has to struggle and learn how to do things. :)
Author's reply
I imagine that it must have been hard for Pippin to grow up with Merry and Frodo coming ahead of him and being so good at so many things. Thanks to Sam, Pippin is getting a chance to see that he can learn a thing or two. The creative streak is all his own, though. LOL Thanks for the review!

LOL, poor Frodo, having to deal with cousins who are continually in a funk. No wonder he never married and had kids of his own. ;) And Frodo gets some revenge on Sam for the grapes!
I remember that feeling when sleeping over at my grandparents house as a kid - dark, strange, way too quiet house, strange shadows you're not used to. Pippin was surprised by the change to his room and it made him feel a bit displaced. Add to that the other problems he's encountering this summer, it's easy to see why he feels so awkward and inadequate. He might even be feeling like he doesn't belong there. Poor Pippin!
Author's reply
I had that feeling at my grandparents' house when I was small too. Funny the things that you remember, isn't it? I have a bit of sorting out to do on this story in several areas but I do hope to get to it soon! Thanks for reading and for keeping an eye on my version of Sam.

Ah, how wonderful to be able to have something on poor Sam, even if it is feet stuck to the shellac. Now I'm curious as to why Pippin doesn't sleep in his room, also.
Odd creatures, Tooks can be.
Author's reply
Very odd creatures, Tooks can be. Even stranger still, teenage males! LOL That makes Pip a double threat in this one. I am sure that Frodo will enjoy his knowledge of Sam's mishap with the shellac, but somehow, I think Sam will still be way ahead of the game as far as knowledge of embarrassing incidents goes. Thanks for reading!

So there's more to Pippin's gypsy sleeping habits than wanting to guard his w-- artefact. I loved Merry tucking his cousin in his bed and sleeping on the sofa - it seems as if good relations have been resumed.
Most entertaining to see Frodo setting up a Pippin trap - and Sam happening on his asleep with his head on the kitchen table. They'll work it out in the end, I imagine. And I shall be only too pleased to discover what is in Pippin's mind.
So how is the w-- artefact getting on?
Author's reply
Well, it has been coated with shellac, as you know. LOL I am hoping to build a bit more in the next chapter, or let Sam and Pippin build a bit more.
I enjoyed making Frodo just a bit sneaky in this chapter. After all, he is going to have to get creative if he is going to get through Pippin's summer at Bag End. LOL

Awww, Merry standing in the doorway watching Pippin sleep just made my heart go all pitter-pat. So very sweet, and then steering him back to bed, and giving up his warm bed so Pippin could really go back to sleep. I really like this chapter. Big surprise. :-)
Author's reply
I figured that in Pip's present mood the only way he might allow someone to 'help him' a bit was if he were too tired to notice it. Merry does still want to watch over him, but Pippin has made it difficult in this one. Glad you liked this chapter and I do thank you for all of your lovely reviews!

I really want to know what's going on in Pippin's head. I suppose I just have to wait, but I'm impatient!
As always, you treat these hobbits so very gently, even while allowing them to be less than gentle with themselves sometimes. I always know I'm going to enjoy a story when it has your name attached. :)

Ohh now I want some bacon...... I'll admit that I didn't know what shellac was until I looked it up while reading this, and I was talking to my teacher the other day and she said it and I felt so smart! lol. This is getting to be much longer than I thought it would be. That's a good thing. Gives me something to do.... :D
Author's reply
LOL Other people's stories always manage to make me hungry if they mention food. I know PIppinfan1988 was writing one at one point with lots of mention of stew in it and I was constantly hungry for stew! Hope you got that bacon.
I have used shellac before and so it was easy to imagine someone becoming stuck up in it. It gets sticky in a hurry. Glad to know that the story is becoming educational. Thanks for reading!

You know, you are really piquing my curiosity with Pippin not sleeping in his bed! I think I've suspected all along as to why, but there is always that chance that the author will take a "left turn" and leave me in the dust. :-) I'll let you know if I was wrong. :-) Great interaction between Pippin and Frodo--then again, you've always had their characters down pat. Thanks for sharing!

Glad you liked the part with Pippin and Frodo. I usually let Merry and Pippin have the long conversations but this time I decided to let Frodo take a stab at it. "Write it," Frodo smiled putting a finger to Pippin's lips. "You need practice writing, you do not need practice talking, Peregrin." LOL!!! This is definitely true!
I'm still trying to figure out, what's wrong with Pippin's room. Maybe, his new room is just too far away from Merry's? But why would he rather sleep in the barn, which is even further away from his Merry?
It was very nice of Merry to leave his bed to Pippin, though!
Author's reply
It won't be too long now until the sleeping question will be answered. Frodo or Merry or Sam have to figure it out soon. LOL Glad you liked that "write it." bit from Frodo. That was actually one of my favorite lines. Thanks for reveiwing!

Aw, poor Pip! He's too old to sleep *with* Merry, but he doesn't want to be so far away either, and he's feeling a bit displaced. He probably found the other little room cozy rather than cramped. Poor Frodo, just trying to please a couple of lads who are at two different stages of "betwixt and between".
I loved Frodo's earnest attempts to find out what was wrong with the room.
I loved Sam's bemusement when he saw Pippin sleeping at the table.
But best of all, I loved Pippin all sleepy with his defenses down and Merry coaxing him to sleep in his own bed, while he went and curled up in the parlour. That was *sooo* sweet.
Author's reply
Even if Pippin is too sleepy to notice it, Merry is still looking out for him and Frodo is trying desperately to look out for both of them. LOL
Do you suppose Sam ever just had the urge to get them all in a room and give them a good talking to? I think that he must have been tempted to tell the lot of them a thing or two. But being Sam, he didn't do it. He just went right on being helpful and supportive.
Glad you are enjoying it and that you for reading!

I was ROTFL my butt off when I read that last bit between Sam and Pippin! Poor Sam has been Pip's intructor for five minutes and already he's stuck to the varnish--and the brush on his forehead, lol. Poor Pip---or, is that poor Sam? Just as long as Tunnelly isn't pinging on my boy, I can have at him. :-)
Loved this: "Frodo smiled. "It’s killing you that you don’t know what he’s building isn’t it?"
"I don’t care what he’s building," Merry snorted standing up."
*snicker*...go on, Merry--keep saying that! Someday you might even start to belive it! ;-)

I went off to work giggling like a fool this morning after reading the latest chapter. Poor Sam - if only he'd been more careful about where he was putting his feet! Stuck to the boards, and a paintbrush stuck to his head - no wonder his voice is sounding a bit strained!! He's so sweet and patient with Pip, bless him.
Those dreams of Merry's are really spooky - I do hope everything is going to be alright. Poor Frodo - coping with both his cousins and a shellacked Sam!
:-))
Author's reply
I don't know who has the most to deal with in all of this, Sam or Frodo. Neither of them are having an easy time, but I do think that Sam's patient nature will be put to the test before that wheelbarrow is completed.

Poor Sam, shellacked to the boards, lol. And poor Pippin, trying so hard to do exactly as he's told and not make a mess and not goof up, and still managing to get it wrong somehow. I know that Sam will be able to deal with this situation better than Tobias Tunnelly, but still, his poor feet won't be happy with him for a while.
I'm every bit as curious as Frodo to know why Pippin is really sleeping in the barn. :D

Oh dear! Do you know Murphy's Law: " Anything that can go wrong, WILL go wrong!"
Well, this was just another proof of it ;-)
Pippin had the best intentions, but somehow the situation got out of hand.
I must say, I admire Sam's patience, though!
Like his older cousins I'm still wondering why Pippin slept in the barn and I loved this sentence:
Frodo groaned. "I liked it so much more when Pippin simply rattled off everything that was on his mind. I miss those days."
Author's reply
For some reason, I could hear Frodo saying that. I am sure that there were thousands of times that Frodo wanted Pippin to just be quiet and so I guess this proves another saying, "Be careful what you wish for."
Pippin is the walking example of Murphy's Law in this story. Thanks for the review!

Sam is so endlessly patient (he could teach me a thing or three about dealing with excitable lads) and Pip so earnestly wanting to please him and make them all proud of him. I can't figure yet why he won't sleep in his bed, but suspect it does have something to do with Merry's dream. Still loving it! :-)

It all started so well. Happy Pippin. Sanded wood. Pleased Sam. Little wheels. Fair. It couldn't last, though, could it! Despite listening to instruction, Pippin's sheer impulsiveness was bound to lead to problems - and now Sam has guck in his hair and his feet stuck to a plank. (Of course, he could have looked where he was stepping!)
Such a fun story. I've got my fingers crossed for Pippin that he manages to get this done and done well. And, actually, for Sam, that he survives the experience with his pleasant smile and good nature intact.
Author's reply
It was a good beginning, wasn't it? But the best laid plans often go astray, don't they? Sam is up to the challenge though and so if Pippin can find the turpentine and manage not to spill it before he reaches Sam with it then maybe things will go a bit more smoothly. Maybe.
So glad that you are enjoying this one and thank you for the review!
