Queen Galadriel · 17 January 2008 · Chapter 38: Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose (the Great Auntie Pringle Remix)

Whoa! What an...interesting character she is! Cracked with sense still in her, I wonder? Where/what is the rest of her story? I'm definitely curious about her now. God bless, Galadriel

Author's reply

This story was part of a "Re-mix" Fic Exchange. I was assigned two authors. Cathleen originally wrote "Great Auntie Pringle" and this was my re-mix of her story. http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterview.asp?sid=4762&cid=19046 The other story I wrote for the remix challenge was for Claudia's story "Clear Shot"--which my re-mix for was "Clear Conscience".

Queen Galadriel · 17 January 2008 · Chapter 39: Looking for Magic

Oh, but what *is* it?! What's the word? I rather hoped we'd find that out...*grins* God bless, Galadriel

Author's reply

Sorry, *grin* that's a *Tookish* secret! LOL! I don't even know it myself--only Gandalf, Pippin, and then Paladin, and young Faramir!

Queen Galadriel · 17 January 2008 · Chapter 40: Dreamsong

Oh, the description of that music brought a lump into my throat. Music has to be one of the greatest, sweetest blessings given us by God, and both as a musician/singer (that is, I love to sing) and just as a person, I'm awed each time I see how it touches others and what astonishing power it has. That was just what these two needed, I think. God bless, Galadriel

Author's reply

Loving music, yet being myself only mediocre as a musician, I let Pippin fulfill my wish to create wonderful music--and I can often both hear and visualize him playing! Music is just such an integral part of life. And yes, they needed it. Playing soothes Pippin, and listening to Pippin play soothes Merry.

Queen Galadriel · 17 January 2008 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

Aw, poor Pip! I completely understand how he feels. Bless his heart, but Legolas is right. God bless, Galadriel

Author's reply

It's all too easy, sometimes, to feel you've said the wrong thing. But Legolas has a lot more perspective on these things--he does, really, know what he's talking about.

Queen Galadriel · 17 January 2008 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

Oh, wow! Excellent job with this! I could almost feel everything, and I have to laugh rather sheepishly at myself, as my own body is so tense it makes it difficult to type! :) I love the careful attention to every detail of every sense! God bless, Galadriel

Author's reply

What a wonderful compliment! I thought perhaps with his sight and hearing fading in and out, his other senses, especially that of touch, would come into play.

Queen Galadriel · 17 January 2008 · Chapter 43: Whatever Happened to Rusty Cotton?

Hi! First I have to say I have missed your fic sooo much and I'm so behind now, but that's all to the better because it means I get more to read! :) *hugs* Oh, Rusty! Poor lass, locked up...but Buttons is going to marry her! Ooo how wonderful! *grins* God bless, Galadriel

Author's reply

Hi sweetie! It's good to see you again!! I've missed you, too! Yes, poor Rusty! But I've always thought she had to do something brave during the troubles, and Dana (who's visiting with me this week) just kept at me to write her story! And yes, Buttons is going to marry her! And then she will be Pippin's cousin, by marriage! LOL!

Andrea · 9 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

What an excellent idea to use the different font sizes! Like Frodo the reader is forced to concentrate on what the others say. Or maybe I need new glasses ;-) And then the voice of the Ring, impossible to overlook or to ignore! All the time Frodo is fighting It to protect his kin and Strider. Once again I'm fascinated by his strength! Athelas. Even the name of it was soothing That's exactly what I thought when I first read about it! Thank you very much, Dreamflower, for this mathom!

Author's reply

I was very glad that the font experiment worked! Yes, it's the fight to protect others that allows him to tap into his inner strength and resist both the Ring and the Morgul-shard. JRRT had a "thing" about the sound of words--he thought they should sound like what they meant, and he planned his languages accordingly. I think "athelas" is one of his real successes. I'm very glad you liked it!

Larner · 9 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

Ah, the fading in and out, and the voice of the Ring too loud and clear, while those of the others are distant and difficult to appreciate. Excellent use of font styles, Dreamflower.

Author's reply

Yes--that was just the feeling I was trying to convey! It was hard to format, but worth it, I think.

poppymuddyfoot · 8 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

Oh goodness, darling, this one hurts! It's so beautifully written that I can feel Frodo's pain and frustration and determination all at the same time. I'd never really stopped to think about Frodo's thoughts at this time, and now I'll never be able to read or watch this scene again in quite the same way. Thank you. Oh and by the way, I like what you've done with the smaller font size, it does make the conversations seem fainted and farther off. Great job!

Author's reply

Wow! Thank you for the lovely review! I did want to show Frodo's combination of weakness and strength at that time--though the wound weakened him so much physically, in a way it made his strength to resist even more, as he realized the threat to his loved ones. I'm very pleased that my experiment with the font size worked. I was not sure I could format it that way here, so I was glad when it came out all right.

harrowcat · 8 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

Wow, what a read Dreamflower. Loved and felt every word.

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Lindelea · 7 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

As I mentioned, back when you were still anonymous, I thought this was very well done!

Author's reply

Thank you! and thank you also for commenting again!

Speedy Hobbit · 7 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

Oh, our poor, dear Frodo! I want to give the innocent little thing a hug! =( My goodness, being so badly hurt really must have resembled a waking nightmare! Ugh! He is so fortunate to have friends as wonderful as his 2 cousins, his newest friend Aragorn, and of course his dear beloved Sam! You lend an excellent use of description to this particular mathom, and it was an enjoyable blend of angst and comfort! The biggest shame is he has to endure this for seventeen days!

Author's reply

Yes, poor dear Frodo! But he does have the love and support of his friends, so he will be all right--at least once he gets to Rivendell!

Mum's the Word · 7 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

Oh, this was very effective! Using the smaller font to make the others' voices seem small and thin was brilliantly done, and a perfect match for your excellent storytelling. I could just feel the tension and Frodo's wavering between the spirit world and the tangible world. Beautifully done, as always, Dreamflower!

Author's reply

I'm glad that the smaller font worked to give the feeling I was hoping for! It was very hard to format, but I think it was worth it. Thank you for your very kind words!!

Antane · 7 October 2007 · Chapter 42: On Amon Sûl

What a terrible struggle and it was only just beginning. *hugs them all* Thank God that Frodo had so many guardians on his journey, seen and unseen. He needed them all. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Yes, just the beginning of seventeen days of nightmare. Frodo did indeed need all who loved him.

Antane · 19 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

"He has such a large and tender heart," he said. Gimli nodded. "Well, he *is* a hobbit!" Sorry it took me so long to get to this, but what a lovely ending! And that heart is in the right place too. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Obelia medusa · 18 September 2007 · Chapter 24: Birthday Morning

Aww. What a lovely mathom! I hadn't seen this before. *sniffle*

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm sorry I hadn't seen this review before, either! I'm glad you liked it!

Kitty · 16 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

Sorry for reviewing so late. Lovely ficlet, Dreamflower. I have to agree with Legolas – Pippin didn’t say anything he wouldn’t have said at any other wedding, too. It’s certainly not as if everyone had talked about the repercussions for Arwen and her family and Pippin had only forgotten about it. And I think that he realised on his own, took it so seriously and felt so bad proves only that he – contrary to Folco – realises when he’s wrong and how much he truly cares for his friends. I am glad Legolas was able to comfort him. And Gimli’s remark about Hobbits at the end was so insightful. I truly love your Legolas-Hobbit-interaction! Oh, and your extension of the saying was perfect for Gimli! Have a wonderful holiday in Scotland, my dear!

Author's reply

You are absolutely right on all counts when it comes to Pippin. The main difference between him and Folco is that he is a good deal more perceptive and intelligent. Though he sometimes speaks impulsively, he usually realizes quickly if he has said something wrong, and moves at once to apologize or fix the situation. Unfortunately, Folco is neither as smart or as imaginative as Pippin, so he has trouble understanding how other people feel. Legolas and Gimli are very fond of their hobbits, and would do anything for them! Right now I am at the flailing and panicking stage--some of my preparations are not ready, and I can't sleep! But soon, soon I will be on my way, and everything will be better. I can't wait to see Marigold and the other Mooters!

Lily · 15 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

Awww... a very cute story. I love Gimli's last comment. He has come to learn a lot about hobbits :)

Author's reply

He has, indeed, learned a lot. And will learn a deal more as time goes by. But he's grown quite fond of hobbits.

Baggins Babe · 14 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

Awwww! This was so sweet - how typically Pippin, worrying that he had put his furry foot in it! Those last two lines were utterly perfect and sum up all that we love so much about hobbits. I also loved the comfort and wise words offered by Legolas and Gimli. I intended to review this two days ago but the best laid plans...........!

Author's reply

And *I* intended to reply a few days ago! But am in the middle of my plans to go to Scotland. (A week from today I'll be in Edinburgh, meeting other hobbit-lovers!) The main difference between Pippin and Folco is that Pippin is perceptive enough to *realize* when he's misspoken, and to want to make it right, while poor Folco never quite understands what he's done wrong! It's *very* Pippin indeed to worry that he has inadvertently hurt someone! Legolas and Gimli were unlikely to leave Pippin uncomforted, if they thought they could be of any help at all.

Andrea · 12 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

Speech is silver, but silence is golden. And knowing when to speak and when to be silent is mithril. Perfect! I just realised again how high the value of mithril is, especially for the dwarves! And Pippin was just wonderful in this story! He only wanted to express his happiness. I can think of lots of other people who wouldn't even have recognised their mistake. "He has such a large and tender heart," Indeed! Frodo would be proud of him if he ever heard of this little episode! BTW, we have this saying in Germany, too: "Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold!" But nothing about mithril, naturally ;-)

Author's reply

Yes, when Liza assigned me my story element, it struck me at once that in M-e, another precious metal would need to be included--ao I added the part about mithril. It does, rather, point up the relative value of that treasure! Indeed, Pippin may sometimes speak impulsively, but he's never thoughtless, and would realize his mistake at once. I think Frodo would not only be proud, but would recognize Pippin's reaction at once. *grin* Naturally.

harrowcat · 12 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

And I think that last line just about says it all! *g*

Author's reply

Yes, I think so. I nearly left it off--but then felt as it was Gimli's POV mostly, he deserved the last word. To me it quite sums up hobbits: one of the things that we *know* about them from canon, quite aside from their love of food and drink, is that, as a race, they were uncommonly compassionate and merciful, with very few exceptions. That was what attracted Gandalf's attention to them in the first place.

Grey Wonderer · 11 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

I was going to pop over to the challenge site and read this there but decided to read it over here for my bedtime story instead and I enjoyed it very much. Pip is so hobbity here, recovering with encouragement for a major embarrassment. I also hadn't thought about how Arwen's wedding would affect those in her family. I also think of weddings as happy occasions but Arwen's really would have been bitter-sweet for her family. Lovely story.

Author's reply

I'm glad you liked Pippin in this! I, too, had not thought a lot about how Arwen's decision would affect her family until I read Nilmandra's "History Lessons: the Third Age" and Boz4PM's "Okay, Now Panic" and their chapters on Arwen's marriage, and her father's and brother's angst over it--even though they *were* happy for her, they still agonized over losing her! Those stories really influenced how I see that wedding now.

Larner · 11 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

How sweet it is indeed, knowing this one cares that he might have inadvertently caused distress in the twins. And Legolas is so comforting. As for Gimli's advice--yes, a most Dwarvish aphorism! Love it!

Author's reply

Yes, Pippin's very perceptive, and would never wish to distress anyone unnecessarily, much less Arwen's brothers. But as Legolas helped him understand, it wasn't really his fault, except perhaps an excess of enthusiasm--not something Pippin can really help! When I was given that saying as my story element, I thought at *once* of the Dwarves and Gimli!

Lindelea · 11 September 2007 · Chapter 41: Misspoken

Ah, lovely. I especially liked the last two lines. And how nice to see Menelcar again!

Author's reply

Thank you! I just thought that Legolas and Gimli would have something to say about it all, and they've learned a lot about hobbits in general, and Pippin in particular over the last few months! Well, most certainly the new Court Bard would have to be present at the Royal Wedding!!

harrowcat · 20 August 2007 · Chapter 40: Dreamsong

Too 'excited'! Itseems that Frodo is not the only one who is a master of deception.

Author's reply

Well, I suppose that it would depend on one's definition of "excited", but I would not be surprised at that either--after all, both Pippin and Merry were able to keep the Conspiracy from Frodo! And Pippin showed that he too, could be deceptive when they were among the Uruks. I don't think they'd have cared to share their real reason for staying up with the housekeeper.
