Awww! This is beautiful, G.W.!
You captured our four lads perfectly and painted wonderful images in my head, which I surely will remember! The one I liked best was little Pippin pretending to be a butterfly.
And don't say you have no imagination of your own! This little story proves you completely wrong ;-)
Author's reply
Thank you for the review and I am very glad that you enjoyed Pip's part of the story. I do think that he must have been very imaginative as a little one.

These are delightful. Bell and Primula are such a wise mothers. Each knows just how to sooth her son's feelings. I love the continuity in the last two and how Frodo uses the much same technique on Pippin that his mother used to make him fell better.
Author's reply
Thank you! I think Frodo must have been very good and sorting out his little cousin's troubles at that point and I like to think that he did use some of his mother's lessons even though he lost her far too soon. Thank you for reading and reviewing and I am glad that you liked these.

As I read I was entranced. You have captured each of the four personalities beautifully.

Why thank you. That is such a lovely review. I appreciate it very much.

Your take on the lads is just adorable, and I loved how each one was dealt with differently in matter of "going along". I loved the way both Bell and Primula knew their sons so well, and could get them over being left.
And Merry was so funny with Frodo, pretending like he'd have something more important to do with Berilac.
Pippin? Well, Pippin's a good deal sharper than anyone gives him credit for, he is! LOL!
Author's reply
I had fun writing Frodo as a younger lad. He is always the older one in my tales so it was nice to let him be the little one for a change.
I could see Sam as being eager to please his mother and to help out. It seemed such a 'Sam thing' to me.
And Merry would have had to be the sort that hated to admit disappointment for any reason. I could see him trying his best to cover that up at least while talking to Frodo.
Things like buttons might have troubled Pippin but I think he was very clever when it came to keeping up with his older cousins. He must have learned how to 'work them' early on. hehehe

Oh, yes, our lads indeed, and Pippin already has Merry all figured out. Too clever by half, our Peregrin is, but we love him for it.
Author's reply
A bit of fluff for the weekend. LOL
I think that having followed all of his older sisters and cousins about Pippin was bound to have picked up a thing or two, even if he wasn't certain about those darn buttons.

Awwww! The fluffiness! *hugs all the wee hobbits* Those were some good distraction tactics that Bell and Primula used. I love that Sam was a 'hero' at such a young age, and of course Frodo would much rather read a book than go out and play with the other kids. ;) Merry was just so very Merry and I love that he had to eat his words later. Pippin and his buttons were adorable.
Author's reply
I don't write Bell or Primula often so I am glad they turned out well. As to Sam, I could see him being a little helper around the home at a very early age. He just seems to be that type of personality that worries about others and wants to help if he can. I thought Frodo's love a books might just ease his anger at being left by the 'older lads'. I also had fun writing Frodo as the younger child for a change. As to Merry, I always make hi stubborn in some way. LOL
I could see Pippin always in a hurry to keep up and never allowing himself time to 'figure out his buttons'. Thanks for reading!

That final line is perfection! I always adore your wee lads, and how they interact.
Author's reply
Thank you! I love that line in the movie. I know some think it takes away from Pip's character but I do enjoy that he offers to go along with his cousins and never thinks about what that means until everything is settled. hehehe

· Chapter 2: Getting Left
Awww this is adorable! How good of Frodo to make everyone happy at the end but I can't believe that naughty Merry forgot his promise! My favorite bit was when Pippin thought he had one button left over. Wee Pippin is just the cutest thing ever!
Author's reply
LOL This would take place same year as Merry's big promise but before he'd actually made it. This is before that interesting summer involving the 'baby dragon' so Merry is still not certain that he needs a 'little shadow'.
I could see Pip being the type of child who was in such a hurry that he never managed to get his buttons lined up properly. Glad you enjoyed it.

A perfect picture of all four hobbits - Frodo enchanted by the beauty of the butterflies, Merry wanting to keep it for himself, Pip wanting to be a butterfly and dear Sam admiring them for pollinating the flowers. Each so typical of their character and absolutely delightful.
Author's reply
Thank you! For some reason I could see Frodo so clearly with those butterflies and from that image I wound up with this story.

· Chapter 1: Butterflies I have known
Merry's reaction seems very symbolic of his later wish to hold on to Frodo - the butterfly who needs to be set free. While Pippin wants to be a butterfly - and Sam to understand one.
Author's reply
You know, I hadn't thought of Merry's reaction in that way but it would certainly be true. He was trying to hold on both to the butterfly and to Frodo. I think you found a hidden meaning that was hidden even from me! A very good point and I thank you for mentioning it. Thanks so much for the review!

Aaaawwww! Those were adorable! You captured each wee hobbit perfectly, even Sam. This will be a good exercise to help you feel more comfortable writing Sam, if you start with little snippets like this. :) And I love that these are from Saradoc's point of view. It's a good way to let the 'minor' characters have some play time.
Author's reply
Oh, good! You liked Sam! I feel better now. You know I do worry about writing Sam and I think you're right. The practice will do me good. As to Saradoc, he and the Gaffer may be my favorite parents in the Shire. For some reason I am not at all afraid of writing the Gaffer. Wonder why? Thanks for the encouragement. At some point I may pick your brain about Sam for one or two of these little stories. (I will try to make that brain-picking operation as painless as possible.) hehehe

This was so beautiful! How each wee lad sees and connects with not only the butterflies, but the world around him. Each reaction is spot-on with their characterisations. I enjoyed each and every take on the Fly-flies! ;-) Thank you for sharing your wonderful world of hobbits!

Thank you for reading and for saying such lovely things. I do like to think about how the lads are different and how they are alike. I am hoping that will be what all of these little stories that I post here are about. Of course I could do a series on how butterflies react to differnt things. Nah, might not go over too well. LOL

I'm going to squeeze my fat butt through this fibre optic cable and smack your hands for saying you have no imagination of your own! What do you think *this* is???? We may be "borrowing" from the Professor, but I've seen a passage where he lent them to us to invent our own world upon his. So there ya go! :-)

Hey! Harrowcat made me eat soap! Idn't that enough? LOL
I've heard that quote from Professor Tolkien but every time I sit down to 'invent' I can't believe that this is what he had in mind. LOL
Oh, and you are not fat. Those cables are just entirely too tiny. Next time you decide to come smack my hands, please, drive! It's so much easier! *wink*

'No Imagination!' GW you fibber!!!! Why do I log on each morning if not to revel in the imagination, sometimes rather over-active, of Authors like your very good self. Now go and wash your mouth out with soap for lying!!! *gggggg*
Author's reply
Word of advice to Harrowcat, "Soap tastes nasty, precious. We doesn't like it very much. No we doesn't, precious." (Spits bubbles and looks in mirror.) "Harrowcatmay be right about over-active imagination. We need to get out more, yes we does, Precious.!"

That was lovely! Such a nice way of stringing pictures together, with the common theme of butterflies, and yet such individual personalities emerge. I liked especially that you let us look through Saradoc's eyes at each of them.
Thanks!

LOL! Methinks there ought to be a disclaimer to the disclaimer. No imagination!
(beg to disagree)
Author's reply
I love it when people beg. It's a weakness of mine.
Here's your disclaimer to the disclaimer:
Be warned that the disclaimer for this story may contain some questionable statements. (Not that bit about Tolkien. That's completely true.) It was not the intention of the writer to lie, she just couldn't come up with anything at all imaginative to say. sigh!

And each has a completely different understanding of the same creature--one delighting in them, one seeking to hold the beauty to himself forever, one seeking to be like them, and one seeking to understand them--and, of course, in terms of is beloved flowers. And you KNOW how I love the idea of the butterflies loving to be around Frodo Baggins! Oh, so very beautiful imagery here. And love that it's all from Saradoc's POV.
Author's reply
Frodo's part of the story was the first part that came to me. Usually, with me, it is Pippin, but this time I was driving to work and I kept seeing butterflies on the wildflowers and for some reason, the image of Frodo sitting among them turned up and the rest came after. Saradoc was the last element to sneak in there and Merry's part was the hardest to write. There, now, you know entirely too much about this one! LOL
Thank you for reading!

Think I won't follow you into the Old Forest? Think again! I've been in there before. I even have a magic map that will show me where you are and, no, wait! That a map of Hogwarts that I nicked from Fred and George Weasley. This may be harder than I thought.....
Thanks for reading the prologue. That takes real nerve.
