Homes for gnomes

We know that Tolkien originally called the Noldor 'the Gnomes'. Mercifully he changed his mind about this, but what if th Gnomes had survived into the Silmarillion in another form?... The opening quotation is from Chapter 3 of the Silmarillion, 'Of the Coming of the Elves'.
