Every time I think this story can't get more chilling, it does. What terrible men. Lady Renna is interesting. I can't decide if she is truly a victim or putting on an act, thanks to the indications of there being some foreign influence at work over Legolas during the joust. I must also say that you write horses beautifully; each has its own character and I found the incident when the men of Esgaroth killed Doring's horse especially upsetting.

Author's reply

Hello, Eucalyptus! Yes, Renna is a bit of an enigma, and a new direction for me to write character-wise. I'm hoping she turns out the way I want (my characters have a tendency to get bossy with me, darn them). Writing the death of Doring's horse was harder for me than any other equine death I've related. Hatchet and Piukka at least died for a noble cause; Doring's horse died simply because the men felt like killing him. I love horses; I spend a lot of time around them, and it always bothers me when I have to hurt or injure one in a story. But plot bunnies are in many ways much stronger animals, and I bow to their judgments! Thanks for the review! Chapter 14 is forthcoming. Le Rouret

Ceren Cae · 18 May 2008 · Chapter 12: Esgaroth

That was such a wonderfully written chapter. The atmosphere in the village was just...(shudder). This is turning into my favorite story of yours, which is really saying something, considering how much I love the original Green Knight story and A Fleeting Glimpse of Shadow. I look forward to the story's continuation, and await the next chapter with patience (or at least concealed impatience).

eucalyptus · 14 May 2008 · Chapter 12: Esgaroth

*exhales loudly* The wait was worth it. That was utterly spine-tingling. More importantly, my condolences for your loss, Rouret.

Nieriel Raina · 14 May 2008 · Chapter 12: Esgaroth

This was such a chilling chapter with foreshadowing of things to come. *bites nails* I'm officially on the edge of my seat with worry. I don't like the Master of Esgaroth at all! Wonderfully done! NiRi

Dreamflower · 13 May 2008 · Chapter 12: Esgaroth

Oh my! I think there's more to this villain recognizing Legolas' party than mere reputation. It's clear he's inviting them into a trap! This was a very shuddersome and ominous chapter. I can't begin to fathom what happened to that village!

Dreamflower · 13 May 2008 · Chapter 11: The Journey North

Oh, heavens! How did I miss this chapter!!?!? I loved this journey--Tamin's talk with Legolas about forgiveness was profound: “Forgiveness does not make the person who wronged you right,” said Legolas. “It makes you free of bitterness.” That's so perfectly apt and true; it is hardest to forgive when one knows one is in the right and the other person wrong! It seems that forgiveness then is a offense against the truth. Yet it is probably needed most in those circumstances. I was very pleased with the reminders of the original Quest--the mention of the Dead Marshes and the Black Gate, Bandobras mentioning his illustrious kin, Legolas and Gimli speaking of the days before they became friends. Even Legolas' dark dream about Frodo... But I'm very worried about Legolas. And his father.

Fantasia · 13 May 2008 · Chapter 12: Esgaroth

This is an incredible chapter, the description of the terrible things that must happened in the village anf farms and what was left to our imagination, make me really scary and worry for our friends. Don't let that evil man get close to Tamin!! I hope that they find some elves or dwarves in Esgaroth, I'm worry for Taranduil too, well I'm worry for the whole Middle Earth after being introduce to Malbeach, I know that you like Ivanhoe and romance literature, but you can compite with Stephen King when writing your bad characters. Hope that Galas take the Ithilien elves and soem help from Faramir and ride to Mirkwood with help, Legolas party is not fit alone for this adventure, that already happen in the Heir of Meduseld, I think...Can wait for more chapters...Thanks again for thsi story and I hope that everything is OK with you. Emily · 13 May 2008 · Chapter 12: Esgaroth

Very sorry to hear about your bereavement. Something like that makes fanfic seem incredibly insignificant, doesn't it? This chapter is up to your usual quality. How foreboding in the beginning, how frightening in the end! This Malbeach is an unsavory fellow. I don't like it that he knows all about Legolas and Gimli and even Bandy. What's Malbeach been up to that even the ground vomits? And his little comment about Tamin being pretty--it was rude coming from Fastred's friends, but it's down-right revolting coming from this man who presumably ordered/approved certain deeds that made Legolas, Gimli, and Kaimelas so angry. My satisfaction comes from Bandy's assuring Tamin as to what his Master does to liars of Malbeach's brand. That sounds good. Too bad we can't do that today.

Ceren Cae · 22 April 2008 · Chapter 11: The Journey North

Once again your characters blow me away. They're so fully formed! It's wonderful. I loved this chapter, and I cannot wait to see where it's going next. The dreams you describe are so haunting, I just want to know what they mean! (But I'll be patient). I look forward to your next update! Happy Earth Day

CandissD · 21 April 2008 · Chapter 11: The Journey North

Another great chapter! Cannot wait to read more!

Emily · 21 April 2008 · Chapter 11: The Journey North

This chapter was very vivid. I enjoyed "seeing" the lands they traveled through--the dusty brown lands, the verdant lands beyond that with the duck pond, the edge of southern Mirkwood and the ruins of villages. It was all so very clear and precise. I especially enjoyed sitting by the pond, smelling the grass and the water and the horses and listening to the frogs, seeing the bushes quivering with birds. I can just imagine Tamin's distress at Isilme's grass stains! Beautiful wording. It made me want to run north as fast as I could to my favorite New England pond (unfortunately, I'm stuck in hot and humid Florida for another couple of weeks--plegh!). As for the story. Little Tamin is precious. I enjoyed his talk with his Master, but I especially liked Legolas's little chat with Gimli afterward about quarrels they had had. Reminded me of my sister and myself. Then cranky!Legolas! Too bad for him, but amusing for me. I'm curious about his dream. Why Frodo? Is it because he was powerless in that instance and he feels powerless now? I hope that just as he saw Frodo "die" when he actually lived, that what his other dreams show are less dire than reality.

eucalyptus · 21 April 2008 · Chapter 11: The Journey North

I love how you've woven the ring mythology into the plot. It's a nice touch for so many reasons, most notably for its resonance in Gimli and Legolas' friendship. And I am disturbed that Legolas continues to dream of his past as well as his future, but am looking forward to finding out what that might mean. Good luck with the next chapter!

Ceren Cae · 16 April 2008 · Chapter 9: The Head on the Pike

The imagery in this chapter was brilliant! I loved the description of the battle with Ushtak, truly it was terrifying. I literally shuddered. You do such a wonderful job with Legolas' and all the elves aging. You have captured--better than any other authors I've read--the eternal youth mixed with age and experience so well. In one chapter, Legolas is complaining about getting his hair pulled and having his mother dress him, and the next he is reminiscing about a battle he fought in centuries ago. The characters are all so well developed; I truly admire you.

Emily · 12 April 2008 · Chapter 10: Warnings from the North

Not much action here, but the plot progresses nonetheless. Ah, confirmation from the north that the game is afoot! Durfinwen's letter is perturbing by itself--frightening once Gloin's is read. What is Thranduil doing? Why is Edlothiel an "ice sculpture"? I'm afraid that once Legolas & co. arrive, much more than an "arbiter" is going to be needed! Oh well! Nothing like a splendid little war every now and again to keep the senses keen and the blood pumping! Poor Tamin's having a rough time of it with Fastred. It might be doable for an adult Elf to mingle with men, but I can see difficulties for the children of each race to grow up side by side. Good thing funny little Theodred is there, or Tamin might find himself inadvertently getting into hot water with/about Hisime too! I hope we see more of Gimli and Bandy in the next couple of chapters! They're too priceless to put on the sidelines.

Author's reply

You know, you're the only reader so far to raise a question about Hisime's motivations ... I thought I was being very blatant; is it too subtle still? "Nothing like a splendid little war every now and again to keep the senses keen and the blood pumping" - May you get your wish! And don't worry; Legolas isn't going anywhere without Gimli and Bandobras. Thanks for the review!

CandissD · 11 April 2008 · Chapter 10: Warnings from the North

I absolutely love this story. I cannot wait for more! :D

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm glad you like it!

eucalyptus · 11 April 2008 · Chapter 10: Warnings from the North

Oh, how I love this story. More than I can really say. I'm not sure my heart can take where it seems to be leading. Also given how terrible those dreams are, especially with Faramir's vision of his impending death, Legolas' insistence that his small group will be enough to take on the trouble in Lasgalen strikes me as beyond foolish. I'm not sure I follow his reasoning and I suspect he will wish he had Galas and others with him before all is said and done.

Author's reply

Legolas leaps first, thinks after. He's still in his "leaping" phase! Thanks for the review!

eliza · 11 April 2008 · Chapter 10: Warnings from the North

So Fastred is still in a bit of a snit? Normally I would sympathize but my own "precious" (I use this word loosely) is currently in a snit since he is not allowed to go to a college party with his older sibling (he's 15) unfortuantely he is making his displeasure known *sighs heavily*** I must say I really enjoy how you really seem to flesh out your minor characters. I swear Gloin's letter to Gimili is just as I imagined it would be worded and his description of Thranduil was priceless. I'm am sending your Beta NR my vitual ovation as requested, along with my "bravos" to you. Eliza

Author's reply

You didn't allow your 15-year-old to go to a college party? Good for you. He can "snit" all he likes; you're being a good parent. (I have a 14-year-old myself.) Thanks for the ovation for my beta; she needs it! And thanks for the review!

Nieriel Raina · 10 April 2008 · Chapter 10: Warnings from the North

I have such a bad feeling about Fastred and Tamin parting on such terms! *bites nails* You are just setting us up for heartbreak with everybody, eh? You cruel woman! Enjoying every minute of it too, I suspect. *grin* Still love that letter from Durfinwen. So glad you worked it in and I love how it works here better than earlier. Excellent chapter! I do hope you find time to work on chap 11 soon! I await with bated breath. *places worm on tongue and hopes Le Rouret finds writing time quickly* *grin* NiRi

Author's reply

Get that worm off your tongue! You've re-read Legolas' first "dream chapter" too many times, ew. Chapter 11 is written; I just need to tweak it a bit and I'll send it to you - maybe tomorrow, if I have time, but warnerharmer's new baby is getting christened and we're likely going to be at church/dinner most of the day. I was glad to use the letter from Durfinwen, and throwing Gloin in there was a sort of added "perq." Don't bite your nails too close about the whole Fastred/Tamin thing. At least, as my beta, you get to read what happens before everyone else does! Thank you so, so much for all your hard work! You have no idea how much I appreciate it. - Oropher

Dreamflower · 10 April 2008 · Chapter 10: Warnings from the North

Aww...such a shame that Fastred and Tamin could not come to an understanding before Tamin left. I wonder how Fastred will feel if he should learn his young friend is headed into danger? I'm very amused by Hisime's tendressed for Tamin, but I have to say with every chapter, I like Theodred more and more! For some reason, he reminds me of Pippin...

Author's reply

Poor Hisime; no one takes her seriously ... I do like Theodred, though. He's becoming rather fun! Thanks for the review!

Dreamflower · 1 April 2008 · Chapter 9: The Head on the Pike

I had a feeling that Legolas would find it not so easy to leave Kaimelas behind--but I'm so glad that Faramir was able to confirm the dream as a vision. I have my suspicions about the serpent--but the black blood on and around Legolas disturbs me even more than Faramir's dream of his death. *shudder* It's a shame, though, that Tamin will have to leave before he's mended matters with Fastred. Hopefully that situation too will get resolved sooner or later...

Author's reply

Well, you know me ... I'm all about resolution, aren't I? That's why I continue writing Green Knight fics - there is ALWAYS more to be said! Thanks for the review!

Dreamflower · 1 April 2008 · Chapter 8: One Too Quick, the Other Too Slow

Oh dear! Oh dear! I was just rolling by the time I finished reading the account of valiant Tamin's defense of his friends' honor! LOL! Theodred was an absolute hoot! *ahem*deep breath* I don't wish to neglect the earlier parts of this which were so delightful--loved the naughty ballad, the bits about the doublet, and Legolas realizing that Eowyn is once more in an interesting condition. Looks like he'll need to brush up on his midwifery again. And I loved how sharp Bandobras has proved to be--of course he figured there was more going on than he'd been told. But--oh dear! Poor little Tamin! So earnestly going to Fastred's defense and then finding his efforts completely unappreciated! And for all of Hisime's high-flown language, it certainly looks as though she is beginning to notice certain things herself--just as well that Theodred is still being the bratty little brother, or poor Tamin might have found himself in another situation he could not understand. Ah, Fastred! I loved Faramir's recognition of those traits that were so like Boromir's--a bit of stiff-necked pride only made all the worse by adolescent turmoil. And Leodwyn's attempts to make Fastred jealous have backfired, and she's being a twit about it. It's all so "high school", though it sounds *MUCH* better in such articulate and high-flown language than it does in modern "teen-speak"! It seems to me that Fastred--and even Hisime--have almost outstripped poor Tamin in their development. But perhaps it's as well that Theodred now seems to be about the same age developmentally if not chronologically. Theodred's a stinker, and I love him to peices. He sort of reminds me of Bandobras' Uncle Pippin.

eliza · 31 March 2008 · Chapter 9: The Head on the Pike

Oh heck, Now I'm a weeping sobbing mess. That was by far one of your best chapters Le Rouret. Just what I needed on a dreary raining Monday. Poor Kaimelas! I am so glad Legolas did not leave him behind. Thank you for that great scene. We're really going to have to do something with Tamin though, listening at doors will never do. Can't wait for the next chapter. Eliza, P.S. you would not really be so evil as to kill off my Leggy now would you? A few "elf-owies" are allowed but that's it. E

Author's reply

My dear Eliza, I have killed off your "Leggy" before, and nearly got lynched for it. Do you really think I'd risk that sort of injury again? I'm so sorry I made you cry - well, not really. That's why I write - to evoke emotions. I'm glad you found it so moving. Thank you for your review!

CandissD · 31 March 2008 · Chapter 9: The Head on the Pike

You had me in tears in this chapter. The Kaimelas-Legolas part really got me. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Author's reply

Thank you, Candiss! I hope you like my subsequent chapters!

Emily · 31 March 2008 · Chapter 9: The Head on the Pike

That was worth the wait! I can't even wrap my mind around everything that happened, as I sort of read the chapter all in one breath. It all pieced together so well--the present nightmare to the past battle to the present conversations. I'm a little afraid for Kaimelas, but I'm glad he's going. My favorite part--made me tear up a bit--was when Kaimelas left Legolas and Faramir alone. When I have stumbled, you have helped me up; when I am hungered, you feed me good food, and when I am thirsty give me fine wine. When I weep, you comfort me, and when I triumph, you rejoice with me. What a beautiful statement. I love how mature these characters are. I'm so tired of stories where the characters behave like silly teenagers. It's so nice to read characters like these...improves my vocabulary, too! =)

Author's reply

"Improves your vocabulary" - all right, you made me blush! Thank you! I actually have a very good friend who is my "Faramir." I was thinking of her, and of her rock-solid support through very difficult and trying times, when I wrote Legolas' speech in this chapter. I could never vocalize it to her quite like this without embarrassing us both ... so I put it in writing.

sheraiah · 31 March 2008 · Chapter 9: The Head on the Pike

Wow, just...WOW. And damnit, now we have to wait for the next part. I'd tell you to write faster but, one that would so be the pot calling the kettle black, and two I know that incredible writing can't be rushed. Have I mentioned that I adore both your Legolas and your Faramir? Let's not forget your Gimli as well, and you know that's high praise from me.

Author's reply

Gimli-praise from Sheraiah is high praise indeed! I'm trying to hurry, really I am. But getting a solid hour to myself, without crises and interruptions, is becoming increasingly difficult. And speaking of ... when are YOU posting next, hm???
