· Chapter 73: Hunting Down Rumors
Looks like Miriel is coming round. I wondered if she has chosen the right profession, as her dislike for the people she had to care for was obvious.
As for the rumours, it seems that they are on a trail. If it leads to the right people is still to be seen. I guess the people behind the whole business have still some diversions and false trails at hand. The stuff about a connection between Vanyamar and Formenos and elves staying behind to forment further unrest is disconcerting. And they are still or again at work. Their motivation and goal is still unclear, as a second rebellion will shurely not take place. I think the kings must get clarity about those points to get all of the schemer.
Author's reply
I think Miriel, like many of those in service to Lord Irmo and Lady Este were simply not used to dealing with the Reborn. They were a new phenomenon in Aman. It took time for them to adjust, but some took longer than others.
Clarity about who the rumormongers are and why they are trying to foment trouble is certainly at the top of the kings´ list. Whether they are successful in finding that clarity remains to be seen.

· Chapter 73: Hunting Down Rumors
Nambaurato..hm..this name remembers me of something..and since I don't think he'd be the Lord of Mandos in disguise "grin" , it may be about some Amanian warrior with no great love for Finrod Felagund or for the Elves from Beleriand?..Time will tell.
You know, all those rumor issues makes me wonder what could be all about rather than who can be behind the plot. Since I suppose that nobody wants anymore to leave Valinor in order to begin a new life, free of..undesirable people, to say it so, I believe there could be only two options: either to make some changes regarding the government (maybe some folk wanted to make a republic in Eldamar, "lol") or to strike against the Valar. I assume they do have a purpose, beside venting out their hate and contempt against the Reborn, the Returnees or anyone else.
Now...I'm not too sure what to say. I've to confess that I postponed my review for some obvious reasons. I really don't want either to post another rude or angry review (your work deserves my utmost respect)or to unleash another war, against Ingwë this time. So, I will only tell him, Arafinwë and Ingwion that, even if this is the only accusation that cannot be brought against him, Fëanáro was never a conspirator. Without delving into the topic, to practically accuse him of using pawns (a relative of Indis, of all people) to plot behind the Valar' or the rest of the Eldar's back is both false and abhorrent. I truly hope I've misunderstood their words.
Whew. I've managed to refrain myself. "lol" This story is definitely becoming more and more interesting. I'm eager to see not who but what is behind this devious little plot. One thing, though..I believe the Valar should go down on their knees and thank Eru for not getting them stuck with the Secondborn instead of the Firstborn. "falling backwards with laughter" Only when I think about this..
Author's reply
Hi Sitara. The otivations behind the rumors are certainly more intriguing to think about than who might be responsible for them. With regards to Feanor... neither Ingwion nor Arafinwe say that he was a conspirator, only that Ingwe was convinced that his brother Ingoldo was in sympathy with Feanor and disagreed with the Valar´s exiling him and that Ingwe thought that Ingoldo was in contact with someone in Formenos but he could never really prove it. There were other people besides Feanor at Formenos and it is possible that they took it upon themselves to foment futher unrest among the Noldor and other Elves, being more affected by Melkor´s lies than Feanor or others. This will be explored more fully in my upcoming story about the Darkening.
And I think you are correct about the Valar thanking Eru that they did not get stuck with us Secondborn. We would have made their lives way too interesting for them. *lol*

Hi Fiondil,
It is good to see progess made toward tracking down the rumourmongers. I had my suspicions about the source of the rumours when we first heard about them, and my prime suspects were Valacar and Súlimondil. Time will tell whether we're all looking in the right direction.
I know there's a lot to get through information-wise in these chapters...but I miss knowing what's going on in Glorfindel's head and heart during the progress. It's just where I am right now, and there's a lot going on in RL (read "work") for me at this time. So it may be I'm not paying close enough attention. But hopefully sooner or later we'll get some insight into what's going on inside Glorfindel. I think you really spoiled me with all those chapters dealing with Glorfindel leading up to the time of the progress!
As always, a big thank you. I am waiting anxiously for the time of the big feast to arrive.
Joanne
Author's reply
Hi Joanne. As it happens we will get a glimpse of what is going on in Glorfindel´s head in the next chapter, a little hint of what may happen in future chapters. Hopefully this will satisfy you for the moment. For obvious reasons the chapters detailing the Progress is more broad-stroked than the chapters that only concerned Glorfindel but eventually we will return to him almost exclusively. Just be patient. *grin*

Glad to learn Miriel is behaving a bit better now with the Reborn. About time, if you ask me!
Hm ... that bit about these two Amanian on the ship is interesting. Wouldn't be too surprised if they were somehow connected to the group that broke the Serë Valaron, to be honest. Finrod and the others may be on the right track here. That's a bit too suspicious, waiting for the only Tol Eressëan ship and all that.
Um ... why do I think Finrod and the others from the progress will be very well remembered by Margil and his father, considering all the trouble they caused in such a short time? *eg*
Anyway, things are developing nicely, and I look forward what they will find out about these rumourmongers and how the meetings and the feast will go.
Author's reply
Hi Kitty. Yes, I am sure the entire staff at the Blue Dolphin will remember Finrod and all the others very well and perhaps even with fondness. After all, they did insist on paying. *lol*
We will see how things go in the next chapter.

*grin* People like Finrod really have to be a nightmare for their guards. And it's probably not much of a comfort for them that he's perfectly able to defend himself. Though it seems it's in the family ;)
Poor Nestadôr got it quite bad, didn't he? And what the King said showed too clearly that he was not the only one. I just hope Pelendur listened intently and thinks about it, considering how he treated Haldir.
At least the people in Tavrobel are set on thinking how the leadership problem could be solved. If all of them were that sensible, I think it sould not be too difficult to find a solution. But we will see. With you, I've given up on easy solutions long ago ;)
Author's reply
Well, as Finrod said, at least his guards cannot complain about being bored with him around. *lol*
I think Pelendur is beginning to change his thinking where his sone is concerned, though he will not do so overnight. It will take time for him to reconcile his image of Haldir with the reality before him.
I think I have shown that even with eveyone agreeing that a solution must be found there are no easy answers as to what should be done, but we will see what solution they come up with eventually.

· Chapter 73: Hunting Down Rumors
At last, they are nearing the heart of those ugly rumors!
I think Irmo is partially responsible for the current situation on Tol Eressëa. If he had dealt with the snobbery among the Lóriennildi sooner, the Reborn on Tol Eressëa would have been able to refute the rumors from the Amaneldi with greater confidence, especially the one about the elves from Middle-earth only being there on sufferance.
Instead, for every time Irmo said to one of the Reborn, "I want you to have a good life," one of the Lóriennildi was saying "you're a barbarian and we are your betters and you ought to be grateful to us for turning you into a civilized person." They undermined his credibility and authority every time they opened their mouths, and Irmo let this go on for much too long. Consequently, many of the Reborn have little reason to trust the Valar, and no reason at all to trust the Amaneldi. It's no wonder these rumors persist.
Author's reply
Ah... blame everything on poor Irmo. *lol* But maybe he does deserve a share of the blame. Perhaps, though, this was done on purpose to bring the matter to a head at a time when there were certain Reborn in a position to do something about it, namely Finrod and Glorfindel, among others. We will see how it all works out eventually.

· Chapter 73: Hunting Down Rumors
I suppose Finrod has almost as many tales of the trouble he got into in Mandos as Glorfindel. When it comes to tales of after he was Reborn, Finrod is definitely ahead. He has, after all been reborn for more than a century, but Glorfy has only been reborn for two or three years at this time, I think. But Glorfindel is a competitve sort of ellon... ;-)
That rumor campaign is definitely orchestrated by _someone_. And if “Nambarauto” and ”Amandur” are mere flunkies, I am certain that the Kings – and Finrod and Laurendil – are really going to enjoy themselves in hunting down the ones masterminding this thing. And those conspirators are definitely going to _really_ regret their actions.
Author's reply
We can only hope, Sunny, that our heroes will be able to track down the baddies and make them pay. *grin* At the very least, they will do their best to counter the rumors with the truth.

I found myself having trouble keeping track of who was spreading what rumor and had been involved in what illegal activity. I think that is because it has now been many months since I read the first Elf, Interrupted. I wish there were a way to make it clearer to the reader, but I can't think of any suggestions. Sorry. It isn't normally a problem with this story. What happened to the plan to write about the situation after the darkening? Are you still planning to do that? I'd love to read it if you do... Thank you for writing.
Author's reply
Sorry for any confusion reading this chapter may have caused you Aiwen. I can sympathize. I even have to go back and re-read the first Book to refresh my memory of people, events and motives.
I am in the midst of writing the story of the Darkening but it is not yet in a form that is ready for posting. I am hoping to do so sometime early in the New Year. Certain events in Elf Interrupted need to happen first to avoid plot spoilers. Just be patient. It´s coming. *grin*

Hm, looks like the rumers are all part of a carefully planned attack on the Sere Valaron(sp?), either that or somebody really hates the reborn and the Returnees!
Melkor ahs left his mark on Aman in no uncertain terms!
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
Very true, Lynda. Aman may be the Blessed Land, but Melkor spent time there and some of his evil has seeped into it in spire of the efforts of the Valar to mitigate it. It is one reason why they have "quarantined" the Returnees on Tol Eressea until such time as the evil influences they have brought with them from Middle-earth has dissipated.

· Chapter 72: Reunion With Old Friends
Hi Fiondil,
A couple of thoughts about this chapter...
I was thinking about the reaction of the guards to Finrod's actions and I was wondering if both Glorfindel and Finrod, considering their ability to detect evil, would be able to tell if someone they thought of as a friend had some malintent toward them or the group. Even were this so I don't think Elennen and company would know either of them well enough to be aware of this talent...it might make them feel a little better if they were.
And both Finrod and Glorfindel are planting seeds in the minds of these Tol Eressëans as to what forms of government might possibly work for them. Hopefully the seeds will take root.
Looking forward to whatever comes next--a feast, maybe in the next chapter? But a lot can happen during dinner!
Joanne
Author's reply
It is possible that Glorfindel and Finrod might be able to detect malintentions of others towards them or the group but so far the theory has not been tested. *grin* And the seeds are indeed being planted.

I feel really sorry for Finrod´s guards (and those of the other royalty aparently). Having someone as active and impulsive as him is shurely not easy. On the other hand they must like to suffer or why else would they do it?
Finrod sounds very happy to meet his friends again. But I´m sorry about Nestadôr and his bad welcome into his family. It must be hard to have his own wishes and past completely ignored by ones own family. No wonder that he went away in the middle of the night. But at least the kings of Aman have acknowledged the problem and try to solve it.
I wonder if the group will be as welcomed in the other two settlements when they get there.
Author's reply
The guards do not have it easy, that is for sure, but they get paid well, so they have little to complain about. *grin*
We will see how the Progress is welcomed in the other communities eventually.

I guess this is as good a place as any to finally mention that I like how you have "filled in" the geography of Valinor and Tol Eressëa, and given it infrastructure and organisation and diversity. It anchors the story and the characters to the land and makes it realistic (well, as realistic as Valinor can be, anyway *g*). I love the details about the shops and the jobs and the streets and the so diverse personal backgrounds of the many (many, many, many *g*) characters.
Author's reply
Thanks, Imhiriel. Tolkien was very very vague about the geography of Valinor and Tol Eressëa and I have had to extrapolate from what little information is actually available and then invent the rest. I am glad you like the details. I am trying to make these communities as interesting as possible and also unique, so that Tavrobel has a different "look" and "feel" to it from the other two cities.

Setting up a unified government is a giant step in the right direction to my way of thinking. I should think it would make things easier in dealing with the different groups of Elves if they were all subject to the same laws.
Author's reply
Most likely, Tari. Of course, the trick is to come up with a form of government to which the majority of the elves can agree. We´ll see how successful they are in creating such a government later on in the story.

· Chapter 72: Reunion With Old Friends
The poor guards. Are any of them getting grey hairs? ;-)
I am somehow reminded of a picture from 1973 (during an oil crisis – which meant among other things no use of private cars on weekends). A rather ordinary picture of an elderly gentleman paying for his tram ticket – though the woman sitting next to him looks a bit flustered. The kicker is, the elderly gentleman was King Olav on his way to go skiing.
It is a good thing that Nestadôr’s family made up with him eventually. Though unfortunately the way to that end was way too thorny – but I suppose having him sneak out of the house in the middle of the night and going to a place that _they_ probably thought was a howling wilderness was a very clear wake-up call indeed.
If any of their friends or neighbors get into the same situation – getting a reborn relative on their hands – I hope they will have taken some lessons from this, and done better.
Author's reply
Poor guards, indeed! I think I remember seeing that photo way back then. *grin* Nestadôr’s story is probably not unique among the Reborn but at least it ended happily and hopefully his family is helping others to cope with their Reborn.

· Chapter 71: Town Meeting
Yes, it's good to see this meeting come about to provide the chance to clear the air. But as several other reviewers have noted, there are still a few questions begging for answers. One hopes the answers will be found without any agression or bloodshed.
One really cannot blame Finrod, Glorfindel and Beleg for their reaction to those who only want to see reborn "celebreties" such as they. Afterall, it's not pleasant to have to live in a fishbowl! But I did like the collective sigh from the three of them.
It was good to see Pelendur curious and open to listening to Laurendil's comments about his name. Hopefully some progress will be made in his relationship with Haldir after this discussion. And maybe Arafinwë's comment “Different lives, different identities,” may also give Pelandur some food for thought, if he heard the comment.
As a side note, I did not find it odd at all to have Dúlinn chime in on the issue of Quenya v. Sindarin names. After all, it was the councillors' own introductions that caused Arafinwë to raise the question in the first place.
Well, the intrigue is killing me, figuratively speaking! Can't wait to find out what lies in store for the rest of the Progress, and, after that, what experiences Glorfindel will have. Well, it keeps my mind busy.
Thanks Fiondil.

That was a very interesting chapter. I think the encounters at the camp and later in the Town Hall were an eye-opener for many; it's good that they are at least able to talk so openly about all that without the other side feeling offended at once. There were a few issues that needed to be adressed publicly. I really hope something good will come of this!
And that banter about why the Teleri are called the Teleri was fun and brightened the mood nicely, I think :)

Glad you liked this chapter, Kitty. Hopefully some issues have been aired and opinions altered on both sides. The banter about the Teleri I think showed that these Amaneldi are indeed just ordinary elves even if some of them are kings and princes.

A town-meeting. So the Tol Eressëans can see that the Anameldi are also normal elves even if they are kings and princes.
Their bickering and that they admit that the ignoring of the people on Tol Eressëan was wrong is a good ground to start talks. And of course the feast the next night. Nothing better to bond than getting drunk together.

So Finrod, Glorfindel and Beleg aren’t happy to be the center of the particular kind of attention that is coming their way? I can’t say I blame them. I get this image of a horde of japanese tourists taking tons of pictures of the famous places they visit – and probably any interesting-looking people on their programmed stops, too.
Politics ... At least no daggers have been inserted in any backs. Yet. Although that may me coming, since the visitors are intent on breaking the conspiracy of silence. And the supposed captivity of Laurendil and manwen has not even come up yet.
