Kitty · 12 April 2008 · Chapter 5: The Question of Glorfindel

Ah, so the Valar had barred Glorfindel's ability to see Eärendil and Vingilot or hear his name? That explains a lot - I had truly wondered why he never heard of him. And Atar was not happy with that? Well, that is interesting - and telling. Even if I still do not know why the Valar did that, I doubt it will do much good at the moment and wonder if it was wise at all. Now you have me wondering if Atar brought them in the 10th dimension on purpose to lower these barriers ... Anyway, the bantering Valar were amusing; and I have to agree that Finrod and particularly Glorfindel will probably listen better to Manwë; aside from the already mentioned reasons, I think he is too furious at Námo at the moment to listen to reason. And I can't fault Glorfindel for being so frantic after learning of this in top of all that happened lately. He truly must feel betrayed, no matter if it was for his own good (as the Valar see it?) or not. Oh well, I can't wait for the next morning/chapter and to know what Manwë has to say to the excuse of the Valar - and how our two favourite ellyn will take it!

Author's reply

Well, Glorfindel knew of Eärendil, at least up until the destructin of Gondolin but never learned of his fate or that of Idril and Tuor. When Manwë finally does explain things to Glorfindel we will learn why the decision was made in the first place. And perhaps you are correct about Atar's motives in bringing them to the tenth dimension. I'm glad you enjoyed the bantering among the Valar. I think it shows that in spite of everything they do indeed have great love for the Eldar in their midst and also they can laugh at themselves and not take themselves or their roles too seriously. Unfortunately, we will be taking a couple of detours in the story before we find out just what Manwë tells Finrod and Glorfindel, as we need to see what else is happening in Aman while these two are in the tenth dimension. Never fear, though, we will return to our intrepid heroes soon enough. Thanks for reviewing.

vampfan30 · 12 April 2008 · Chapter 5: The Question of Glorfindel

it's been a while since I reviewed anything here, although, I am alive and well.....RL has been a bit hectic. I cannot say enough how much I love your Namo... He is amazing. Everytime I see one of your updates in my box, I squeal.... Thanks for an amazing story....

Author's reply

Great to see you again! I'm glad you are still reading Elf, Interrupted. Thanks for letting me know how much you enjoy reading it and that you love Námo (so do I). He is indeed amazing.

Radbooks · 7 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Well, it appears Atar has decided it's time for Glorfindel to find out about Earendil right now! :) I had wondered why Glorfindel had never commented about the actual star, but it makes sense that they had actually hidden it from his sight. I'm most anxious to see what the outcome is right here and now. *grin* I'm also wondering if Aule had some sort of foresight when he had the pendant made for Glorfindel since Namo seems to think it will be a key to getting them home. I liked the fact that Finrod and Glorfindel moved their camp... it seemed that they were taking charge of their own situation and not just being passive and accepting of what was happening to them. Not that they were passive people, but it would be normal to be that way for a bit... I just thought it was a good sign. I just can't imagine what it would be like not to have any sounds about you. It's a good thing they are not there alone!!

Author's reply

We'll learn in a later chapter just what the Valar were doing in suppressing Glorfindel's ability to see the star or to hear people mentioning it. As for the pendant... we'll have to see about that as well. I think once the initial shock of what happened to them wore off, these two warriors would begin to take charge of their situation as best as they could. Moving the camp to a more 'defensive' position, even though there's nothing there to threaten them, was a first positive step. Getting Glorfindel to stop whining would be the next one. *grin*

artistic sprite · 6 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Oh my god I wish I had been there to see Namo saying " Melkor's balls!"! I wonder if that is categorize as swearing? If it is, Eonwe would had that down his book, right? Snort,'giggle'

Author's reply

I'm not sure if Eönwë uses that particular book for the Valar and maybe they're exempt from such things.*grin* At any rate, it sure surprised the two elves some.

Ces · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Oh dear, Glorfindel definitely got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, didn't he?! Guess he's not a morning person! At least not in that dimension! Poor Námo. Now he has to deal with Glorfindel finding out about Eärendil early. I'm wondering if this will give Glorfindel yet another reason to be mad at him. I think those two elves need to put their heads together and go back over the events that were taking place right before they transported into the tenth dimension. That might be where the clue is on how to get back. "Melkor's balls!" Námo never ceases to amuse me! What will he come up with next?! Ces

Author's reply

Well, as Námo tells Finrod, Glorfindel is still emotionally young and his slipping his leash the night before has also contributed to his less than happy outlook. Finrod and Glorfindel do indeed need to put their heads together and think things through. Unfortunately, whether they realize it or not, they are still suffering from shock, so they're not capable of thinking straight yet. Hopefully, they will both calm down soon and start working on the problem of getting back home. And Námo never ceases to amuse me, either, which is why I enjoy writing about him so much. *grin* Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

Hel · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Well. Aren´t we a cranky elfling this morning? Letting them also searching for a way home keeps them at least busy. If they get bored they shurely will get into trouble. Or more correct into more trouble than they are already in. I was wondering if there is any animal life? There are as much plants as in the "real" world and plants need at least insects to pollinate their flowers. Namo is swearing?!?!? That elflings can never do what they are supposed to do. Maybe they should have told Finrod that he should not tell Glorfindel about Earedil. And why isn´t Glorfindel able to see Earedil? Great chapter. Even if it leaves one with so much questions. Questions I hope will be answered soon.

Author's reply

There is no large animal life in the tenth dimension, excepting Finrod and Glorfindel, because it's a dimension of potentiality, not one of realization (at least not yet). In a sense, the plant life is there, but not. Sorry, it's a bit metaphysical, I know, but the laws of our universe don't necessarily apply here (at least not yet). Anyway, we'll learn in subsequent chapters why Glorfindel is unable to see the star and how it was that he even heard Finrod mention Eärendil.

Calenlass · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

"Melkor’s balls!" Both elves turned with a gasp at the sound of someone behind them and found themselves facing a very nonplused Námo. The Vala stood there in stygian gloom, his expression sterner than they had ever seen it and the two elves started backing up in fear. Námo scowled, looking directly at Glorfindel. "You weren’t supposed to know about Eärendil for centuries yet." *grin* Now that's a an interesting way to end the chapter.

Author's reply

Thanks. I'm glad you approve. LOL

Larner · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Now, that's a rather crude oath! Really! Heh! Well, it appears that Glorfindel will be learning the fate of Earendil a bit earlier than had been planned. And it's nice to see the so-calm Lord Namo being wrong-footed. Poor thing! Poor thing! (And don't mind me--have just picked up my copy of "Sweeny Todd" and have some of its music on my mind--Sondheim outdid himself this time!)

Author's reply

Crude maybe, but I think the poor Vala is allowed. On top of EVERYTHING ELSE, their (the Valar's) best-laid plans where Glorfindel is concerned have all gone to hell in a handbasket. If they thought they had their hands full with Glorfindel before.... heh! Haven't heard the music yet but maybe someday.

Beruthiels Cat · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

I've been trumped.*grin* Stygian gloom, indeed! Literally LOL when I saw that... I can just hear a decree coming down from on high before Glor's rebirth...."Do NOT mention stars, Eärendil, OR silmarils in the same sentence in front Glorfindel!" I had been curious about the mention way back in EI 1 when Sador saw the star from Mando's doorway, and why it's not been in evidence since. So Glor's been 'kept from' seeing it... understandable, given the circumstances. Is Eonwe going to show up? *grin* Cat

Author's reply

I doubt there was ever such a decree. Easier to arrange it so Glorfindel 'forgets' the moment he hears mention of Eärendil and the Silmaril and doesn't 'see' the star even when he's looking right at it. The reason for this will be made clear (more or less) in a later chapter (once Námo gets over his shock and Glorfindel stops screaming, that is. *grin*). Unfortunately, NONE of the Maiar know about the 1oth dimension even now, so Eönwë won't be showing up in the tenth dimension. It's the best kept secret in Arda for fear that someone like Sauron, never mind Morgoth, learns of it and wreaks havoc there.

eiluj · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Aha! So there *was* a conspiracy to keep Glorfindel from hearing about Eärendil! I've been suspecting that for more than a *year* now.... But why can't he see the star? Yes -- blame the Valar for that, I guess: Glorfindel prevented from seeing the star. And for the rest: everyone in Aman prevented from mentioning Eärendil in Glorfindel's hearing? But they're not in Aman anymore....

Author's reply

We're finally learning about why Glorfindel has never mentioned the star or hearing about Eärendil. It's not that the Valar prevented everyone in Aman from mentioning Eärendil in Glorfindel's hearing, but that they prevented Glorfindel from taking any note of people mentioning Eärendil and the star. We'll learn the whys and the wherefores of this in the next and subsequent chapters.

Nieriel Raina · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

"You weren’t supposed to know about Eärendil for centuries yet." As if Glorfindel wasn't pissed enough? Oh dear. I have a very BAD feeling about that. And how do they keep the rest of it from him now? Somehow I doubt they do. I wonder for what reason Atar has stepped in and just what will be learned by the elves and the Valar in this. I'm completely hooked already! *grin* I'm not sure how the elves will find a way back but that doesn't surprise me. I do like how you represent Atar as a flame. Very fitting. And I thoroughly enjoyed Námo in this chapter. Nicely done. NR

Author's reply

It just gets better and better, doesn't it? LOL Well, the Flame Imperishable I always imagined to be the Third Person of the Trinity, so naturally Eru could appear as a Flame if He so desired. We'll see in the next chapter what the Valar decide about all this and in subsequent chapters we will see how it plays out and what role Atar takes in all of this. I have a feeling (based on the chapters I've written to date) that Atar is going to take a more direct hand in this for reasons of His own. I'm glad you also enjoyed Námo in this chapter. He was fun to write, especially at the end. *grin* Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Nikara · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

ummm... oops? That's a great ending. It seems that what they see in the 10th dimension is at least slightly affected by their own experiences. Very interesting. Great chapter!

Author's reply

I'm glad you liked the ending. Thanks.

Alquawende · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

I'm very curious as to how Glorfindel's pendant will help him and Finrod return. Why wasn't Glorfindel supposed to learn about Earendil? How did Finrod know it was Earendil, because I thought Finrod was in Lorien or Mandos when the War of Wrath took place and the Second Age began? I don't like the sound of the place you put them at all. It, honestly, gives me the creeps reading it sometimes, and Glorfindel being unsure about it too, really doesn't help. ^_^! Thanks for writing and I can't wait for the next update!

Author's reply

Well I can't answer some of your questions without giving away the plot, but the question about what Finrod knew and when did he know it is easy enough to explain: while it is true that he was still in Mandos at the time of the War, once he got out and looked upon the night sky once more and noticed a brigth star on the horizon that wasn't there before he would have asked about it and would have been given the story. But as to why Glorfindel doesn't know about it... we'll find out later. And I accidently answered your complaint about the tenth dimension in my response to someone else's review. Sorry about that.

Nettles · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

I do hope that Namo recovers from this unexpected revalation without scareing either of the ellon too much *g* Wonderful chapter as always, and am looking forward to more soon Lyn

Author's reply

Námo is a bit put out at the moment but he's a Vala so he'll recover quickly enough. *grin* Not sure we can say for our intrepid duo, though. We'll see in the next chapter.

Agape4Gondor · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

'I trust Ilúvatar will not abandon you here for all time.' THAT is definitely my hope too! Im very touched that one of the first thoughts from Finrod was for others. 'The elflings and Vorondil?' I don't know how on earth Namo can say this with ANY confidence... 'Do not worry, no harm can come to you here, I assure you.' The Valar don't seem to be able to control or contain much of anything lately!!! Oh dear! Isn't this always the way!!! 'I can hear myself ranting but I can’t seem to stop myself.' I found reading this - sad. 'Glorfindel frowned. "D-do you think the... ban still applies here?' Glorfindel is still under the ban? How difficult for him. Oh dear! Forgive me for laughing, Lord Namo - but it is always fun to find YOU disconcerted! "Melkor’s balls!" ... Námo scowled, looking directly at Glorfindel. "You weren’t supposed to know about Eärendil for centuries yet." GREAT chapter...

Author's reply

Finrod is always thinking of others, especially those in his care, which is why he's so noble and generous of spirit (as Tolkien tells us). Well, Námo telling them not to worry is based on his own experiences in the tenth dimension. There really is nothing there to threaten them. It's the uncanniness of the situation that makes it seem threatening to them. I think we've all been in Glofindel's shoes: we can hear ourselves saying something stupid and yet we can't stop ourselves for some reason. It's as if someone else has taken control of our vocal chords, or something. Manwë has not yet officially summoned Glorfindel to Ilmarin, so until he does, Glorfindel is still forbidden to go there. I rather enjoyed seeing the normally unflappable Lord of Mandos lose it. *teehee* We'll see in the next chapter what that is all about. Thanks for reviewing.

6336 · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Hm, this is starting to get interesting. How did the Valar expect to hide Erendil from Glorfindel, his Silmaril is kind of bright and Glorfindel was bound to notice him, or was he? Oh and Amarie is going to be a little upset if they don't get Finrod back in time for the wedding and yes, I know it is not for a few years yet, but who knows how time runs in the 10th dimension! More please, Lynda

Author's reply

Time runs pretty much the same in the tenth dimension as it does in our own, though there might be some discrepancies so it may seem to them that they are not gone as long as they are when they get back to Aman, but it won't be years, more like a few days off.

Kitty · 5 April 2008 · Chapter 4: Further Truths Revealed

Loved the talk between Námo and Finrod at the beginning. Glad our dear elf has not lost his humour, in spite of everything. The end was *very* interesting. I'd waited for so long for someone to mention Eärendil to Glorfindel, and now Finrod did. What I'd not expected was that Glorfindel couldn't see the star. Does that mean that the Valar made Eärendil invisible for Glorfindel? Not very nice, and I am not sure Glorfindel will take it well, either. But that gives me an idea. When Eärendil is existing in this other dimension, too, maybe he could bring them back on Vingilot? *That* would be rather spectacular *grin*

Author's reply

We will learn (more or less) in the next chapter why Glorfindel can't see Eärendil or why he's never mentioned it before. As for where they are -- it's the tenth dimension. There's nothing there, and that's what makes it uncomfortable for them, especially Glorfindel in his state. As to how they return to Aman proper, that remains to be seen.... Author Reply: Oops! I seemed to have answered Alqualondë's objections to the tenth dimension here instead. Hope it doesn't confuse you too much. Sorry about that.

Agape4Gondor · 31 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

I really liked this chapter. I supposed I wouldn't enjoy them as much, if I hadn't been following Wars of the Valar. I wondered how Glorfindel would react to Finrod's comatose body - Just as I thought he would! LOL - poor Namo. Poor Glorfindel unravelling - I'm not the least bit surprised, and I'm glad that Finrod doesn't chastise him, but comforts him instead. The truckload of supplies that Namo brings with him must have been terrifying - nothing like showing them that they will not be leaving the tenth dimension any time soon!!! And I had to shudder as poor Finrod watched as Glorfindel was attacked... Yikes! Pssst - I also liked the Flame Invincible!

Author's reply

Hi Agape. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter so much. Glorfindel is nothing if not predictable, even in his unpredictableness. LOL And no, I don't think the truckload of supplies is all that comforting to them at this moment, though I'm sure they'll appreciate them soon enough. I'm not sure to what you are referring when you say Glorfindel was attacked. Nothing attacked him, his fëa merely slipped out of his hröa. This is the first time Finrod has witnessed this happening although he is aware of the previous times Glorifndel 'slipped his leash'. It's one thing to be told about it but it's another to see it actually happen to someone you care for. I'm glad you liked the Flame Imperishable. At the moment it seems to be Atar's favorite method of manifesting Himself to his Children. Thanks for reviewing.

obsidianj · 31 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

I was so happy when I got the notice that you continued this story and then I was unable to read it immediately. At least this way I got to read the first few chapters together. But I had to go back and reread the last chapter of book 1. Glorfindel and Finrod are in a fine fix. I have the feeling the Valar didn't know what they were invoking in having these two fight against each other. Luckily there is some higher power to shield all the children from themselves. I hope Glorfindel will get over his shock soon or Finrod will strangle him, just because he himself doesn't know what to do. I love the way the Valar try to cover up their own insecurity, although that is no help for the poor Eldar, who probably don't think too highly of the Valar right now. Poor Arafinwe! You are really not nice to him.

Author's reply

I'm glad you finally got a chance to get back into this tale. I'm sure the Valar had no idea what would happen when Finrod and Glorfindel fought against each other and were completely taken by surprise. Luckily, Atar was on hand to save them all from themselves. *grin* I'm afraid Glorfindel is going to be something of a trial to Finrod and it will be an even bet who will end up strangling whom. LOL The Valar are trying to do damage control without looking as if they haven't a clue (which they don't)... amazing how 'image' gets in the way of things sometimes, doesn't it? And Arafinwë... well, it's a real blow to him, having lost his son once and fearing he's lost him again, perhaps for good.... even when Finrod and Glorfindel return I think it will take him some time to recover his equilibrium.

harrowcat · 30 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

"This really is not good, is it?" - To say the least for our two friends. But for us the readers? Very good indeed!

Author's reply

I'm glad you approve, harrowcat. *grin* Some readers really hate these little cliffies but it's like eating popcorn... you just can't have one. LOL Thanks for reviewing.

Beruthiels Cat · 30 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

I should think that the 'unfinished' state of the 10th dimension would be a very malleable place, and these two would have to be *very* careful what they say or do there. I can't imagine what I would do if *pui-en-orch* were written into the laws of my own universe, lol..With this in mind, Glor's running away would have even more serious implications than in Arda proper (without Atar's intervention, a one-way ticket to nowhere) I am thinking here of the harmonics possibly involved in their song of power that landed them where they are now. Curiouser and curiouser, Fiondil... Well done! Námo is going to have such a headache from studying this, but nice to know Atar has some surprises still in store for the Valar. I can imagine Him urging them to "Keep thinking, kids...you've almost got it..." Cat

Author's reply

I'm sure that's just what Atar is doing, wondering how many clues he's going to have to drop before the Children (all of them) figure it out. LOL And Námo is going to have more than just a headache before this is all over. I'm glad you are finding this intriguing. The answer to how they get back to Arda proper may be a bit slow in coming, but the solution will present itself eventually; it's just going to take a little time for them to sort it all out. Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

Kitty · 30 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

Poor Glorfindel. I certainly don't blame him for slipping his leash again -after all he has gone through during the last weeks and months it is not surprising that the stress is finally catching up with him. The idea that they are stranded in another dimension and not even the Valar know how to bring them back has to be terribly frightening. You mean Námo would not be happy to have these two back in Mandos? I wonder why? *evil grin* Hm, interesting. The Valar can move inanimated objects through the dimensions, but not living creatures? No wonder this proves to be such a problem! And when even Atar himself has to intervene, it has to be pretty bad (though I love the idea that the Flame Imperishable stopped Glorfindel's fëa). I'm still wondering how they will get back. The most feasible method I can think of right now is another Song of Power - but I fear what they will do *this time* if they try that again! Well, at least they now have proper equipment for camping. Though somehow I doubt this camping trip will be very restorative for any of them - Valar included. A pity the review page has no footers, it would spare me to type "Can't wait for the update" every time ;-)

Author's reply

Events are indeed catching up with Glorfindel and the stress is taking its toll on the poor ellon, especially since he's still operating on the emotional level of a fourteen-year-old at times.... not a good combination right now. And poor Finrod has to be the adult in all this, and I don't think he's happy about that. It may be that the Valar truly cannot move living creatures through the dimensions or it may be they only think they can't; they just don't want to risk trying and find out that they were wrong. Best for Glorfindel and Finrod if they figure out how to get back to Aman proper on their own. It may indeed take a song of power to do it, but that has it's own risks as well. I'm glad you are enjoying this so far and that you are looking forward to the next chapter. I promise, it won't be long in coming. Thanks for reviewing.

Ellie · 29 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

This is fascinating and the whole concept is very cool! Poor Glorfy skipping out all the time. Just how powerful are Finrod and Glorfy that they have managed to do these amazing things?

Author's reply

I'm glad you find this whole concept fascinating and very cool! Finrod and Glorfindel are rather powerful elves, having learned from the Valar before they left Aman. Tolkien does talk about the 'magic' of the elves even in the Silmarillion, so obviously they did have abilities that we mortals would not have and I have tried to show that in my Elf, Interrupted series.

Larner · 29 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

No--NOT good at all!

Author's reply

No, not good at all, at all.

Nikara · 29 March 2008 · Chapter 3: Truths Unfolding

It's almost a little cute to see the Valar all so confused. They certainly don't know how to deal with all of these situations! They may know how to get Glorfy back, but not necessarily how to keep him there. Great chapter!

Author's reply

Yes, the Valar are rather clueless here but hopefully things will work out for the best. Thanks for reviewing. I'm glad you liked the chapter.
