Alison H · 22 December 2004 · Chapter 32: Out of Time

Oh--oh----just the chapter title made me nervous! Thank you for updating, Nightwing, but what a terrible cliffhanger! It's back to biting yu nails until the next update! I really loved how you dealt with Aragorn's recovery, how he realised just how Legolas had adapted to his blindness and how Legolas could finally admit that he was blind.I had a lump in my throat when Legolas said that he was blind but he was still Legolas. And the headaches have more or less gone--that's a relief. I really didn't want to get to the end of this chapter because I knew something was going to happen, and I was really shocked when Legolas realised that the cabin was surrounded.Oh,now I'm going to worry for them. Really worry!! Thanks again for this story, Nightwing.I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy 2005. Update soon!

Author's reply

I was more than a little shocked myself that the cabin was so suddenly surrounded. I had every intention of introducing the arrival of the bad guys with a little more time and a lot more grace, but my seven year old daughter was standing behind me yelling "are you ever going to be done with that??!!" and I just went "aarrgghh!" Wrote the last couple of paragraphs in less than 5 seconds and posted it, as I was flat desperate to finish it before Christmas, when what scant free time I had would be completely obliterated. But I am not pleased with the abruptness of the arrival of the baddies. I might return at some point and give those last moments the time they deserve. Thanks very much for reviewing, and all the best in the new year to you.

OH MY GOD *bookmarks* *bookmarks* *bookmarks* it's 3:16am and so i don't think you'll be getting much of a coherent review (but then, i'm not very good with reviews even when it's a decent hour) but can i offer you a very heartfelt THANK YOU for sharing such a wonderful story?! i'm going to check back every single day now, till you finish this! (which i hope you never do... i hope it goes on and on forever!) wishing you a very merry christmas, and a fantastic new year (with lots of time to continue writing!) to come! (tomorrow i'm coming back for a reread, and i see you have another story, "the healer". yay! :) off to bed now... do you mind if i borrow aragorn to cuddle/comfort for the night? *g* and legolas and little Squeaky can have the top bunk... i'll take good care of them, too!

Author's reply

You certainly may, and I'll offer my own heartfelt thanks back for your enthusiatic review. Sorry I kept you up so late! The Healer is over at Cassia's site. It just won 2nd place in a reader-nominated voter award thingy too. (Tooting my own horn shamelessly here). Do let me know what you thought of it once you have given it a read. It's very different than this fic though... I really indulged myself in some rather over-the-top elf-torture. Had to get it out of my system I guess.

sidhe · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 26: Then the Perilous Path was Planted

argh!!!! wow. i am *so* glad that i'm a latecomer to this story, and that i can just click "next" to see what happens next. the suspense would have killed me otherwise! poor aragorn... *bites nails* (but ohh, yay, h/c! *l*)

sidhe · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 24: Burnt Offerings

LMAO!!! Can't breathe... laughing too hard! "Aragorn, I am not worried. I am terrified. Bread is supposed to be silent. It should not sizzle." The elf swiveled his head round. "Where is Tithlam?" "Gone out the cat door. And a good mouthful of socks with her." "She moves her children to the safety of the barn. I am tempted to join her." I giggled so much I think I woke the neighbours! "How is that possible? Has it sprouted feet?" LMAO! The absurdity of it all! *g* Still laughing... You're an absolute genius! *happy grin* What a wonderful way to spend a night... *settles back down for more reading*

sidhe · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 19: Speak To Me

I'm having so much fun!!! It's 2:10am and I've been reading non-stop for hours and the words are all blurry and it's way past my bedtime but I simply *must* find out what happens next! I haven't read a fic this charming and angsty and hurt/comfort-y (my favourite) in ages. Thank you! And yes, this is a silly review, but I just wanted to let you know how much I'm adoring it!

fliewatuet · 15 December 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

I think I've never been that grateful for a snow storm. Aragorn and Legolas are in dire need for a respite. I only hope that it will last long enough for them to recover somewhat, but not long enough for them to get into serious trouble.

Author's reply

Me too. The poor guys really needed a break. Well, if you caught the update, the respite was rather short. Serious trouble is here at last.

Legolass · 14 December 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Me again, Nightwing. I have your story three times now - yes, repeatedly, and I realise what a great writer you are. You had me weeping in places and laughing in others (I LOVE the elf fight in Mirkwood, and the baking disaster!). Always, I in awe at your ability to develop the characters, making them so real and so in keeping with what true friends would be. I salute you, Nightwing, and I wait in thrilled anticipation and excruciating agony for more chapters. PLease alleviate my pain soon.

Author's reply

Three times??!! Wow. It really amazes me sometimes when I think about people I have never met reading my story. Humbling and uplifting at the same time. Thank you.

Legolass · 3 December 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Yours is one of the stories I have bookmarked, Nightwing. Thank you for writing it. It occured to me that your story in which Legolas loses his sight could actually be used to explain how and when Legolas developed his incredible sense of hearing and sensitivity to his surroundings that we find in the Lord of the Rings!

Author's reply

Thank you. Could be. Some people have suggested that it might help him deal with the darkness of Moria.

Firnsarnien · 1 December 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Oh joy, new chappy! Though, not quite long enough by my standards! LOL I'd say ten pages ought to be long enough, no? ;) *chuckle* Really though, I'll take whatever you give us! I'm just so glad you haven't abandoned this story. It's right on the top of my list of favorites I watch like a hawk! Whew, now that I'm thoroughly drained after all this, I'm glad Aragorn's owies have been tended to and none of them seem horribly life threatening. Even his poor frostbitten hands seem to be doing nicely. But, poor Leggy. He's been so busy tending Aragorn and going to feed the horse and all, he's neglected his own owies. Me thinks they may just be working themselves up to an infected state. Poor Leggy, but I don't think I can get too worked up about it. After all, I'm not going to say that I don't like Leggy angst. I am the one who does backflips when Leggy gets owies you know. I just love seeing our poor Elf hurt and getting lots of love and comfort. *sigh* Only wish *I* was the one doing the comforting! ;) Heh, heh. Anyway, now that my immediate worries for Aragorn have been taken care of, I'm going to start worrying about these men that set the trap for Aragorn. What do they want? Who are they? Why do they want to hurt Aragorn and Leggy? Eeek! And of course, I'll worry about Leggy's untended owies too. ;) Please hurry with another update. Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait! :)

Author's reply

This chapter was actually one of my longer ones! I'll never abandon this story. I just wish I had more time to write. Returning to full time work has a way of impacting writing time. The new chapter is creeping along. I am taking a few days off for the holiday, and hope to get in some good writing time so as to get an update out before Christmas. Nope, Legolas won't develop and infection. There will be plenty of other things coming down the pike to keep our good elf busy. Yes, worry about the bad guys. It's time.

e_vrouw · 28 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Hello Nightwing, Thanks for the update! *Sigh* that was a long wait, the suspense was killing me. I almost expected them to be attacked again the moment Aragorn seemed mildly recovered. I'm glad you are giving them enough time to recover. "He did not know when Tithlam had joined him, but he welcomed her soft presence when he realized she had at some point curled herself behind his bent knees." You know we have a cat who does the same thing. It's nearly impossible to get out of bed when she's lying behind you. How can you tell someone is sleeping by touching their eyes? Everyone automatically closes their eyes when something comes too close. What is up with Legolas' headaches?! The previous morning (chapter 26) the headaches were so bad he "felt his body reel as the pain in his head crashed in upon him", now it seems they're little more than a "minor irritation". I can't figure it out. Is he finally getting rid of them? I love the way you clearly depict the problems Legolas has in taking care of Aragorn. He is no healer and needs Aragorn's guidance eventhough he really doesn't want to ask it of him. "- before he threw yet another question at his suffering patient, whom he well imagined was close to the end of his ability to endure much more." It really amazes me how you can always find some form of comic relief. Even in these sort of situations you can have Aragorn singing off-key about begetting days, and discussing the use of bloody swords in medical practice and STILL make it seem completely believable! :-D I must congratulate you on your superb description of pain. Almost every other fanfiction-author I've read either believes that cleaning wounds doesn't (seem to) hurt or completely ignores the recovery process. (I think they only like hurting them and think it's boring to watch them recover ;-) I must say that my opinion of your story went up another notch after this chapter. Your sense of realism is without parallel. (You mentioned something earlier about your 'medical background'?? I'm curious as to what it is.) Bringing in wood with injured hands? Ouch! We have a furnace that runs on wood so I have quite some experience in chopping wood etc. Handling wood is damn painful if you've injured your hands. And Legolas still hasn't really taken care of his inuries!! (only sticking his hands into ice cold water does not count!) He is now responsible for their wellfare, he even says so himself. He is more concerned about Aragorn's injuries and Rhosgernroch's wellfare , than his own. And I have to say... ... I absolutely love him for it! I have always been intrigued by people who are so selfless that they put other people's wellfare before their own. There aren't many who would do such a thing. Legolas really is improving remarkably these past few chapters. I really like the change he's gone through. Good luck! e_vrouw You wanted to know what my penname meant? Well 'vrouw' literally means 'woman' in Dutch. And the 'e' is a reference to me studying Electrical Engineering. (there aren't many e_women in Delft. ;-) Where's his bow?? Last I heard he had thrown it away while fighting the wolves. YEAAAAH!!! TITHLAM!!!!!! YEAAAAAH!!!!

Author's reply

You've brought up some good points. You're right about the eyes. I wouldn't let anyone stick his fingers in mine! As for the bow, I'm afraid it is still lying out there in the snow. The elf was in a rush. Ah, the headaches. I must confess that they have become a bit problematic for me. I introduced them because I wanted to demonstrate that the elf's condition is somewhat fluid... there is still something going on, and perhaps a cure is possible in the future. But I cannot make them so bad that he can't function, so it was necessary to have them ease up a little. Also, now that he had his moment of realization in the forest and accomplished a great rescue, he is more accepting of his blindness. He's found some peace now, is no longer so angry and fighting, and so the headaches have lightened up a little. I'm glad you liked the pain description. I don't care how brave and stoic someone is... when something really hurts, that person will react. But Aragorn also has a lot of self-control, so he did his best to hold still. I'm a veterinary technician, and have done my share of wound treatment, bandaging, surgeries, etc... Tithlam is busy playing nurse now and snuggling with Aragorn. Legolas will take care of himself, I promise. He just has so much to do first. As soon as he's done he'll treat his injuries and get some sleep.

sofia · 28 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

great chapter. Aragorn is right in saying that Legolas is a wonder. And Aragorn sure has self control! I know that if I was in that position I.... I don't know what I would of done but it would not be what Aragorn was able to do. -sofia

Author's reply

Yes, Aragorn did have to hold on and let Legolas do what needed to be done. Not much fun, but it's done now and he's having a well-earned sleep.

EllyBaggins · 28 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Brilliant! i especially loved aragorn banging his good foot against the bedpost, and the way legolas accepted the praise was very touching.

Author's reply

Yes, when something hurts too much, start hitting things!

Padawan Liann · 27 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Another fantastic chapter, Nightwing! It was great to see that Legolas finally realized how capable he still remains. It has been a pleasure to read the progression of your story as he has grown in confidence and begun to re-gain his skills. I haven't commented on every chapter, but I've been hooked from the beginning, and you have never disappointed. The story continues to be fresh, wonderfully written, and engaging. Thanks again for a fantastic read!

Author's reply

Well thanks! I've enjoy bringing out all the little baby steps the elf has had to take as he regains his confidence. He's still very capable, and there are more challenges to come.

Alina · 26 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

What a treat to find your new chapter online today! I loved it, as I did all the others. You keep having a "voice" in this story that I really appreciate. Reading this feels as if someone is telling the tale without hurry, with great care and skillfully planted suspense. I guess that person should be you ;-) I like the way Legolas grows from this ordeal, the way he truly "spreads his wings" again. You have never rushed this development in your story, which makes it all the more believable. For the first time, you can really sense that Legolas is willing to face life again, even blind. Great job!!! I hope real life is going well for you. All your chapters are well worth the wait! Alina

Author's reply

Yes, that is what I wanted to convey. He's back on his feet and ready for whatever comes his way. I never thought this story would go on so long. I'm glad you don't think it's dragging.

Alison H · 25 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Wow, that was a tough chapter to read, Nightwing.I could really feel Aragorn's frostbitten hands and I would have screamed my head off if someone had forced *my* hands in warm water! Aragorn is really suffering still but it was good to see that he was aware enough to try and get Legolas to look after himself first---as if Legolas would listen! "Legolas---you are a wonder".I just loved that line and I could have cried at Legolas' reaction to his friends' words. He *did* do a remarkable thing and he knows that now---and good for him.Pride in oneself can be a great motivator and Legolas can look forward to whatever thay may face with his confidence returned. Another exceelent chapter, Nightwing.Thank you.

Author's reply

I did some reading on treating frozen hands, and the sources said to immerse them in warm water, and that morphine might be required. Egad, it must hurt horribly. Happy you liked the ending of the chapter. It seemed a good place to pause.

Tithen Feredir · 25 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Ah!Such a relief to be over the crisis! But there are more challenges ahead. It's an amazing thing you've done with this tale. You took a very hackneyed device,(central character struck by blindness), and you've turned it into the most wonderful study of character, relationships and the inner workings of resilience. Thanks for an excellent ongoing read! Can't wait for more! Hoping RL will be merciful. TF

Author's reply

Well, thanks! I'm glad it's going along well so far. I do hope RL starts behaving itself too. I am fine myself, but a number of people around me are in the throes of various crises, so it's a bit draining. Have a great Turkey Day!

Valto · 25 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

ay! You always leave us begging for more! At least this chapter was not as big of a cliffhanger as before. I am glad Aragorn is not faring TOO badly after his ordeal! :)

Author's reply

Nope, no great cliffhanger this time. Our heroes need a rest. But there is some very scary music starting up in the background...

Lamiel · 24 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

I'm so glad to have this resource to turn to when FF.net is being a pain. Alas I fear that my own current story is going to exceed the ratings allowed by SoA, otherwise I'd post it here and save myself a lot of trouble. As it is I've been sitting on the finished new chapter for two days now, badly wanting to post it but unable to do so. Oh well. On to this new chapter, and oh, I am SO glad that you are able to post it here, because I'd hate to wait any longer than necessary for it! I think you dealt with the obstacles of helping Aragorn: cleaning the wounds, controlling the pain, and especially the problem of frostbite, very realistically. Your medical skills are showing through here, and what a good thing that is! A good thing they had the poppy, too. Oh, poor, poor Aragorn. I was really feeling for him in this chapter: I know how painful it is just to warm up a mildly frozen foot (I spent two years in Wisconsin and had my share) - this must have been excruciating for him. I just loved the bit where he slammed his good foot against the bedpost - perfect! But he held the important bits still and let Legolas take care of them - brave, stoic Ranger. It gives one an appreciation for just how tough he must be. And now Legolas is off through the blizzard to care for the horse? Sheesh! Couldn't he at least bandage his hands first? I mean, really. Self confidence is wonderful, and I have the sinking feeling that he's really going to need it in days to come, but there's a point where you have to take care of yourself too! Mad Elf. I'm still concerned about his ability to shoot his bow after all of this is over. Thank you again for this update - it really lifts my spirits to see a new chapter from Nightwing. I'm so glad that you've been able to keep up with this story, despite all the curves that RL throws at you. You can have a little pride in yourself too. Go on, like Legolas discovered, it's a good thing. Oh, and congratulations for passing (by a lot!) 1000 reviews on FF.net. Good for you! This story certainly deserves it.

Author's reply

I love this site, too. One reason is being able to go into the editor to make quick improvements. It's so easy. I looked over this chapter this morning and saw a few little things I wanted to fix up, like I noticed I had written Legolas wanted to "close his eyes" and fall asleep. Er, what's that? Right... no eye closing for an elf. Zip in, fix up, zip out. I love that. I'm glad you liked the detail of Aragorn kicking the bed. It's what I do when something hurts too much... an almost desperate attempt to make something else hurt worse. I remember when I was in the throes of childbirth (ow ow ow) I began yanking on my own hair. I mean really digging my claws in. Yipes. I really think Legolas should not bandage his hands first. They'll just get all dirty taking care of the horse. He's got the gloves on. Once all his work is done, he'll wrap them up and have a snooze. I am now waving my hands around in a hypnotic fashion: (sotto voce) Send me an email... your new chapter... send me your new chapter... you cannot resiiisssttt....

Eruwestial · 24 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Wow! This is just getting better and better. You have me feeling exhausted and cold-not that I mind in the least. I can just see that cabin. Can't wait for the next chapter. Thank you!

Author's reply

Thank you! I love that cabin really. It's quite cozy and rustic, with beautiful scenery all around.

daw the minstrel · 24 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

As I was reading this, I was thinking about how odd it is that the person who is hurt is the one who is expected to swallow his feelings and keep quiet. Surely if it makes him feel better to scream and curse, he should do it, as long as he cooperates in being treated. Anyway, that's my theory. Legolas is indeed a wonder here. His life seems stripped down to the bare essentials of figuring out how to just live through all this on a minute by minute basis.

Author's reply

Yes, that is an odd concept. I say yell if one must. It's a normal reaction, just like like cursing at your husband during labor. :-)

French Pony · 24 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

Ah, the long, cold March of the Gimps is upon us. Legolas should not forget to bandage his hands, or he will be one miserable Elf. There's a reason that airline stewardesses tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting your kid. How frustrating must this be for Aragorn. Not only does he have to tell Legolas what to do because Legolas is no healer, but he has to assess his own injuries, because Legolas can't see them. Getting emergency treatment is no fun in the best of circumstances, and having to direct it while you're getting it is a yucky situation to be in. Still, everyone involved bore it with grace and good humor.

Author's reply

He won't forget. Just has to take care of a few more things first, since he's in charge right now. I felt rather sorry for Aragorn myself. I'm sure he would rather have just passed out.

lwarren · 24 November 2004 · Chapter 31: Shelter from the Storm

*wince* Ouch! I cringed all the way through this chapter! Poor Aragorn, and Legolas, too! This was a fascinating look at a blind person struggling with tasks that would challenge a sighted person, and triumphing! Go Legolas! I love the way you have tracked his adjustment to being blind - taking us through the grieving process for his sight, to his gradual acceptance to his blindness. Ever since he picked up his bow again and rode the horse, he has gradually regained some of his confidence, but it took this life or death situation with Aragorn to finally free him. Now he believes in himself...now he feels useful, and the strong friend is depending on him, and him alone! Strong tonic for the spirit, Nightwing, and couple that with his "reconnection" with the forest, and our elf is definitely on the mend. Of course, that means that "they" will come soon, doesn't it? *sigh* I foresee more owies ahead - makes me want to get the elf and the kitty and hide them in my closet! :-) (oh, yeah...Aragorn can come, too! LOL) Wonderful stuff as usual! linda

Author's reply

All right, out of that closet you guys! Ouch! Me too! But I did try not to linger too lovingly over the pain as some authors have been known to do. It was a heavy part of the chapter, but I hope I didn't overdo it. Yes, I'm afraid your are right about "them". About time, too. They were supposed to show up about a thousand chapters ago. A little rest for healing, then back to it.

LKK · 13 November 2004 · Chapter 30: Hold On

A powerful chapter, Nightwing. You present such wonderful detail and yet the details never overwhelm the story or the sense of urgency you are creating. I hope now that the ranger and elf are safely within the warmth of the cabin, their recovery will be swift in coming.

Author's reply

Hi, LKK! Thanks. Some rest and healing has been prescribed by the author. A big turkey feast too. Shhh, don't tell anyone... I know it's totally AU and off-canon, but I'm having a helicopter drop a Thanksgiving feast to them today. And some antibiotics too.

lwarren · 8 November 2004 · Chapter 30: Hold On

Nightwing (such a cool name!), I just had to de-lurk and let you know how awesome this story is. I've been reading since the beginning, but didn't know how to review for the longest time (not at all computer-literate, no no no). Then I was going to wait until the end of the story and get it all out at once, but phooey to that notion! From the beginning, this story has been loaded with everything - action, character development, lovely language...it has it all! Not to mention the adjusting to blindness...ok, I won't mention it! I dearly love tho' your development of the relationship between Legolas and Aragorn...close, but not...you know!! :/ This story shows them the way I've always pictured them as best friends (from the life-saving to the mundane, every day things). It's great...I started rereading the whole thing again last week and just shook my head anew at the depth of the characterizations (not to mention all the other important little details that make it so rich!). I may have to go back and review chapter by chapter if I ever get the time away from school (where I am...I stayed late to get some work done...and decided this couldn't wait any longer). This chapter is no exception either...I almost lost it as Legolas was straining to open that trap, and when the blood started running...well...let's just say it wasn't a pretty sight! :-) *sigh* I gotta go...Wonderful chapter...I thank you for sharing your talent! linda (that kitty is terrific...and I totally understand her(?) need to be close to the elf...yes, I do! BTW, some of your little comments in your replies to reviews about the broom and you...too funny! LOL Where can I buy a broom?)

Author's reply

Hello again. Sorry about leaving this review unanswered for so long. You actually did review me once before... way back with chapter 17, I think. Thanks so much for all the encourgement! I did have fun with the witch in the reviewer responses a while back. That almost turned into a story of its own!

e_vrouw · 26 October 2004 · Chapter 30: Hold On

Hello Nightwing, This chapter was absolutely fantastic!! At the beginning you set a pretty fast pace but that is exactly the way it should be. I mean, Legolas needs to get Aragorn out of the cold as quickly as possible. Somehow you manage to convey Legolas' urgency very well. Aragorn's silence must be so frightening for Legolas. He's almost completely dependend on sound. I especially like the way Legolas handels Rhosgernroch this chapter. Singing to calm her. And the way he treats her when they reach the house was very well written. If I were in his shoes I would probably have forgotten all about her. I love the way he shows his gratitude towards her. Very believable for a wood-elf. :) I really like the fact that you write the same part of the story from both Legolas' and Aragorn's point of view. It really shows that you know what you're doing, if you can explain everyone's actions from their point of view. "Legolas cast his mind back to Mirkwood, and the healing rooms deep within his father's vast network of caves." I thought elves didn't like caves? Why would he admit to living in a cave? I thought it was always referred to as a 'stronghold' or 'palace'. Legolas completely forgets his own injuries when Aragorn's wellfare is at stake. The way he opens that trap with his own (bleeding) hands is a real tribute to how much he cares for Aragorn. I'll bet Aragorn will have a few words to say though, when he wakes up. Legolas hasn't been taking care of himself. Hope you can update again soon, e_vrouw Where's Tithlam? Or Aragorn's socks for that matter? :) You said Tithlam would probably have the whole house covered in socks when they returned and Legolas would be falling all over them. Now it seems Legolas' is making such a mess, he doesn't need Tithlam to do it for him.

Author's reply

Hello e_vrouw! BTW, what does your name mean? Here are direct quotes from The Hobbit, on Thranduil's home: "In a great cave some miles within the edge of Mirkwood on its eastern side there lived at this time their greatest king. This great cave, from which countless smaller ones opened out on every side, wound far underground and had many passages and wide halls; but it was lighter and more wholesome than any goblin-dwelling, and neither so deep nor so dangerous. The king's cave was his palace, and the strong place of his treasure, and the fortress of his people against their enemies." So there you have it: a vast network of caves. I think elves "not liking caves" is more the stuff of fanon than canon. Tolkien did have Legolas say that he didn't want to go into Moria, but then hardly anyone else in the Fellowship wanted to either. And Gimli did express wonder at Legolas entering the Paths of the Dead before him, so perhaps it is true that elves shun underground places if they are dark and creepy. Tithlam is currently observing all from a corner. I gave some thought to giving her time in this chapter, but rejected it, as the tone is rather desperate at the moment. She'll be back. And yes, one must never forget the horse!
