A very nice review chapter.
The Making of a Ringbearer II: Anchored by Henna Gamgee
Larner · 15 January 2008 · Chapter 60: Burying the Past
A very nice review chapter.
shirebound · 14 January 2008 · Chapter 60: Burying the Past
What a marvelous summary, Obelia -- for us, and for Frodo. Large blue eyes watched him anxiously. “Uncle...” the boy said when Bilbo didn’t move. He shifted his feet in the puddle on the front step. “I didn’t mean it. I didn’t mean it! Please let me come home—” Frodo was cut off by Bilbo seizing him in a fierce hug. “My dear boy,” he said huskily. “My son!” Awwww. You know how glad I am that everything has worked out!
Dreamflower · 13 January 2008 · Chapter 60: Burying the Past
Oh, I'm so glad Frodo came to his senses! Poor Bilbo, and poor Frodo--but now everything's all right again! Well, I know you said only an Epilogue left, but I for one am sorry to see this come to an end--there are any number of stories about Frodo coming to live with Bilbo, and his time during those 13 years before Bilbo left--but yours has a unique spin, emphasizing that special bond between them! Wonderful job! And I am so glad you kept at it, in spite of all your many RL responsibilities and commitments. I hope perhaps you will start another story sometime soon!
GamgeeFest · 5 January 2008 · Chapter 59: Merry's Game
Merry is a wise young lad to know his cousin needs good memories of the river, and playful enough, with that vivid imagination of his, to help Frodo get over his fears. Esme is right about him and Bilbo being too stubborn for their own good. That Frodo still remains in Buckland is such a hardship to them both, but Frodo refuses to budge in his resolve. It’s a characteristic that will do him well on the Quest, but now he needs to humble himself and listen to Merry’s advice yet again to return home.
Author's reply
That's true, his resolve will certainly serve him well on the Quest.
GamgeeFest · 29 December 2007 · Chapter 58: Happy Birthday, Samwise
*snerk* Oh, what a wonderfully fulfilling update, and a very good birthday for Sam as well. I know exactly what Bilbo said – get out – and Lobelia’s shrieks were priceless. I’m surprised she gave up the Ring so easily though, especially considering her lust for power and the state of rage she was in, but thank goodness Bilbo got it back. Now, how long until he and Frodo reunite?
Author's reply
Yes, I wouldn't like to think what Lobelia would do with the Ring, if she knew what was possible!
Dreamflower · 28 December 2007 · Chapter 59: Merry's Game
Oh, good for Merry! I can so easily believe that this Merry is the Merry who will grow up to follow Frodo anywhere, and who will take all care to plan for his cousin's protection and happiness! This is great!
Author's reply
Yay! I'm glad, because that is the Merry I'm trying to capture. I got a comment somewhere else that my Merry is much more responsible and thoughtful than Tolkien's, which rather alarmed me. So I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees Merry as a sensible/good planning type. :)
shirebound · 28 December 2007 · Chapter 59: Merry's Game
Merry frowned and thought hard. He didn’t know how to convince Frodo he was wrong about the other things, but there had to be some way he could help. “It seems to me that you would like the water more if you had some happier memories to think about when you were in it,” he said slowly. Very clever, Merry! There's such love between these cousins.
Author's reply
I <3 hobbit cousins. :)
Larner · 27 December 2007 · Chapter 59: Merry's Game
He's already a wise young Hobbit, Merry is. Now, for Frodo to accept that his younger cousin is, for the moment at least, wiser than he is....
Author's reply
A wise young hobbit indeed!
ruby · 17 December 2007 · Chapter 58: Happy Birthday, Samwise
Liked it. Well-written, good info and nice adjectives. Would like a lot more!
Author's reply
Thank you! More is coming...
Larner · 27 November 2007 · Chapter 58: Happy Birthday, Samwise
Satisfactory indeed, although it won't be perfect until Frodo gets over his own upset and realizes he belongs in Bag End with Bilbo, with Sam by him.
Author's reply
Yes indeed!
Dreamflower · 27 November 2007 · Chapter 58: Happy Birthday, Samwise
*Whoosh!* I'm sure glad that Lobelia didn't have the Ring long enough to find out what it was! And I loved Halfred and Sam's delight over getting to see Bilbo's arrival at the door! It's a good thing this time he didn't have any auctions to stop! Now, if only Frodo will see some sense!
Author's reply
I'm sure glad that Lobelia didn't have the Ring long enough to find out what it was! Well, there's only so far AU I'm willing to go. ;)
shirebound · 27 November 2007 · Chapter 58: Happy Birthday, Samwise
A moment later, a wailing scream pierced the quiet afternoon. Wheeee, Bilbo's back! This is indeed a lovely birthday for Sam. :)
Author's reply
Poor Sam deserved a lovely birthday!
GamgeeFest · 23 November 2007 · Chapter 57: Frodo's Folly
Ouch! That’s got to sting. Bilbo certainly does have some cleaning up to do: get back Bag End, kick out the S-Bs, get another will, get back the Ring, and most importantly, win back Frodo’s trust. That last one will be the hardest, especially since Frodo refuses to return to Hobbiton with him. Frodo can’t really be blamed of course. His reasons are sound, as far as he’s concerned, but the real reason is that he just doesn’t want to risk being abandoned and hurt again. More miserable times are ahead for them both, it seems. At least we know it will eventually be resolved.
Author's reply
I do so hate writing the miserable times, I don't think they'll drag on for much longer.
Dreamflower · 27 October 2007 · Chapter 57: Frodo's Folly
Oh dear! Poor Frodo, and poor Bilbo! After all this time, it's going to take more than just telling one another their stories to fix things. I can completely understand Frodo's feelings here: at his age, everything is all or nothing at all, and he can't quite believe there is a middle ground between tying Bilbo down or "letting" him be "free". And I am just imagining Lobelia's face when Bilbo comes home--AGAIN!
Author's reply
We shall take a little break from Frodo and his tweenaged angst next chapter... ;)
Larner · 27 October 2007 · Chapter 57: Frodo's Folly
Foolish young Hobbit. He's just cut out both his own heart and Bilbo's, and doesn't realize it. And he thinks he's doing Bilbo good? He'll learn, soon, I hope.
Author's reply
Yup, he'll learn.
PipMer · 13 September 2007 · Chapter 56: Back To Where It All Began
Oh,please update this soon. I am hooked, and am on pins and needles wondering what happened to Bilbo! I just started reading this a few days ago, when I found it over at the MEFA site, and I'm already up to the last chapter. I also read your first of the trilogy, Adrift. Great job on the story, and looking forward to more, including the last story in the trilogy!
Author's reply
Thank you so much! I am a terribly slow updater, sorry. There are only a few more chapters, though, so hopefully I can pick up the writing pace in this final stretch!
Kate · 1 September 2007 · Chapter 56: Back To Where It All Began
Hi I just recently found your story and have been reading it for the last 3 days. I have really enjoyed your characterizations especially Frodo and the Gamgees. Sam has always been my favorite! I also really enjoy reading prequest stories LOTR always made me think about how the relationships came to be. I am really enjoying your version of events and hope you update soon those awful SB's can't be allowed to have Bag End much longer! I do hope Bilbo gets back soon!
Author's reply
Thank you so much! And Bilbo is coming back very soon...
GamgeeFest · 11 August 2007 · Chapter 56: Back To Where It All Began
What a lovely update! I can just imagine Frodo's despair and sense of abandoment as he comes to realize that Bilbo very well might not be coming back. He says he isn't surprised, but you know it has to sting, and that he's only saying that to try to make it hurt less. Poor dear, but I would strangle Bilbo when he returns if I could! What is taking him so long? The memory of the dwarf-spool was beautiful, and shows how good a mother Primula was.
Author's reply
Things are definitely not going to be simple when Bilbo returns. Thanks for reviewing, as always.
Larner · 10 August 2007 · Chapter 56: Back To Where It All Began
And poor Frodo needs that hug just then.
Author's reply
Poor Frodo needs a lot of hugs!
Dreamflower · 8 August 2007 · Chapter 56: Back To Where It All Began
Well, I hate to see poor Frodo so down in the dumps--he's still assuming Bilbo's gone for good, poor lad. Having been sick, and had S.-B.s on his back, and everything, it's no wonder he's reverted to his old depression. I'm glad you said Bilbo's returning soon--I hope it was something dire that kept him away. Saradoc and Esmeralda will find it hard to forgive him if not. But I worry--Frodo's malaise and feelings of abandonment may mean that he, too, will find it hard to forgive Bilbo. I loved Merry in this. He's still dogging Frodo's steps, and he'll keep on dogging Frodo's steps until a pack of Uruk-hai drag him off kicking and screaming in the wrong direction!
Author's reply
I love exploring the (possible) history of Merry's relationship with Frodo. Who better to take on a quest to save Middle Earth? :D
shirebound · 8 August 2007 · Chapter 56: Back To Where It All Began
Frodo fairly melted under Pippin’s adoring gaze. “This is one of those special spools, Frodo-lad. This one just wasn’t meant to have thread on it.” Oh my, what a heartwarming, heartbreaking chapter. Pleeeeeeeze let them find that will, or bring Bilbo back, sooooon! *paces*
Author's reply
I don't know where all this is coming from; I certainly didn't set out to inflict all this angst on poor Frodo! But, he doesn't have much longer to suffer. :)
Larner · 27 May 2007 · Chapter 55: A Friend In Need
The Ring is working on her, of course. Frodo ought to have locked it away with the maps, of course. Come on, folks--think of the documents under the bed!
Author's reply
Ah yes, the documents under the bed. Frodo chose what to put in there himself, though. I would hope he'd remember coming across the will!
Larner · 27 May 2007 · Chapter 54: Presumption and Prejudice
At least the Gaffer now knows and will be keeping more of an eye out. Now, to check out those documents under the bed, Frodo.
Larner · 27 May 2007 · Chapter 53: Frodo Sackville-Baggins
And we know what came of that ambition and bitterness, after all. Interesting situation here.
Larner · 27 May 2007 · Chapter 52: In Search of Information
Clever Bilbo to have another copy made; but the SBs have done their homework for the moment, and will need to be checked immediately. Now to figure out where the third copy is--in the space under Hamfast and Bell's bed, maybe?
