· Chapter 42: Conversations with the Elves
Oh, shit! Well we kind of knew they were gone but it is unsettling to know that they are, there was always the hope that they were still alive. The hole Farrell has been digging for himself over the last few months must be half way to China by now!
I can understand Dave's frustration at having to trust the Elves with this and knowing that they know more than they are saying.
I hope Maddie is paying attention to this and has some idea of just what is going on. Farrell needs to be gone and soon!
Hope all is going well with you.
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
That just about sums it up, doesn't it, Lynda. We'll see about Maddy eventually. She's not out of the picture by a long shot but it will be some time before she re-appears.
And things are going very well with me. Thanks for enquiring and thanks for the comments. I appreciate them both.

· Chapter 42: Conversations with the Elves
Good to see that Alex and Derek are still getting along.
Now, what _did_ happen to the turkey? there does seem to be a story there...
Glorfindel definitely is in a better mood after the fight. So five Elves are more or less equivalent to one Maia in a fight like that? I suppose that would also depend a bit on the skill of the fighters.
So Daeron isn't included in the roster when the elves pick out those who are going to beat up (or get beaten up by) Glorfindel? Even if he wasn't a warrior back in the First Age, I would have thought that Glorfindel would have ensured that he would be trained - and the ladies, too! Perhaps the ladies (except for Nimrodel, since she is pregnant) would like to treat the female students to a bit of an exhibition, to encourage them. ;-)
so Farrell killed his flunkies after they had embarrassed him by getting arrested. I'm not particularly surprised - he did seem like that sort of a person.
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. Yes, Alex and Derek are still getting along. They're gwedyr, after all. *grin*
I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere about the turkey but as yet I have not learned any of the details. I'm sure you can just imagine the scene though with Amroth waving a carving knife under Glorfindel's nose in excitement or anger.
Daeron certainly does know how to handles various types of weapons, but I think he prefers not to be beaten up by Glorfindel and would rather just watch everyone else get beaten up. *grin*
As for Farrell... less said, the better.
Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

Failed to review the last chapter, but it and this one are good. The plot is certainly coming along. I do feel sorry for Dave. Our Elves are keeping him safe, but anyone would resent the treatment. Thanks again.
Author's reply
Hi UTfrog. You're right that Dave is feeling resentful at the way the Elves are treating him, though they are doing it to keep him and his family safe. I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter (and there's nothing that says you can't review it even now *grin*) as well as this one. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

· Chapter 41: A Funeral and a Fight
It's sad the Elves can't get along with the people in the church. Couldn't they try to find some common ground from Finrod's conversation with a mortal woman (I can't remember the name)? It might make life easier for both sides. And anyway, a funeral is not a place for a quarrel.
I almost expected Fionwë to be there to beat Glorfindel to a pulp, but the students got a good show this way, too.
You know, I feel sorry for the two criminals. Of course this makes things easier and there is not going to be a court case where everyone would hear about spies in the Elf Academy, but still, those two didn't deserve that fate (whatever it is). And Michaelson is back! Glorfindel seems to have friends in useful positions in Wiseman.
Author's reply
Hi someone. Well, as Daeron points out, expecting EVERY human to like and accept the Elves is highly unrealistic, especially when said humans have a difficult enough time just accepting other humans who have a different skin color or go to a different church or just speak a different language.
And we should feel sorry for the two criminals. They got way over their heads without knowing what the price of failure would be. But, I think such things happend more than we like to think they do.
Glorfindel has been very careful to cultivate friendship with a lot of people in useful posiions in and aruond Wiseman. That makes things a little easier for them.
Thanks for the review. I greatly appreciate it.

So, the two bozos are gone and Glorfindel is about to antagonize the local authorities. Great work. The workout for Glorfindel was overdue. I hope it did him some good, at least it seems so. Wouldn't all the students realize that something is not normal about their teachers after that performance in sword-fighting? That was some impressive fighting. Can't wait for Monday.
Author's reply
Hi obsidianj. Yeah, the workout was long overdue. I'm sure some, if not all of the students watching the fighting would be wondering just how human their teachers were, while others, like Alex and Derek, would be in the know and would simply be impressed by the performance. When the Elves eventually reveal themselves to certain students, this sword fight will be another 'proof' that they are who they say they are (after all, anyone can undergo cosmetic surgery to modify one's ears these days *grin*).
Anyway, thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it greatly.

"Walking into a church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than walking into a garage makes you a car." Well said!
It sounds as if the Elves had a lot of fun playing with their swords, and Glorfindel certainly seemed more cheerful after the sparring session. But I suppose that to _really_ make him relax, they should call in Fionwë and get him and a couple of _his_ friends to beat Glorfindel to a pulp. ;-)
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. I came across that saying and loved it enough that I knew I had to use it in some story or another so I was happy enough to have Glorfindel use it. *grin*
You may be right that Glorfindel needs to be beaten on instead of doing the beating to make him really relax, but most of the students aren't ready to watch even one Maia fight, so Glorfindel will have to be content with beating up his five friends for now.
Thanks for commenting. I very much appreciate it.

What a magnificent fighting scene! I guess all that training with the warrior Maiar paid off in the end. *g*
Still concerned about Farrell and his contacts. And I'd really, really like it if Christians weren't always the narrow-minded idiots; unfortunately, my years in the cloister and as an employee of the parrish have taught me how often that can be the case.
Author's reply
Hi Soledad. I'm glad you enjoyed the sword fight scene. I enjoyed writing it.
And Farrell will be a concern for all right to the end. Unfortunately, certain brands of Christians aren't the only ones who are narrow-minded idiots. I find most fundamentalists of whichever religion or denominaton are very intolerant of others and their beliefs and since such people seem to be everywhere these days, why should Wiseman be any different?
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. You know how much I appreciate your support.

This just keeps getting better and better - antagonizing the local authorities?!? Good for Daeron remembering that Glorfindel needs to beat the stuffing out of something on a regular basis if he's going to keep emotional equilibrium - what a show for the students!
They really need to discover the location of Farrell's HQ, granted, they've been a little busy, but he's so out of control it's really frightening.
Author's reply
Hi Lyana. I'm glad you are still enjoying this. You're right that they do need to concentrate on finding Farrell, but other events keep interfering with that search and that will have consequences as we will eventually see.

Ooch, that gas was something that I didn't expect...And that does NOT sound like something that the Agency would approve of, gasing civilians, and especially using a weapon used by what who can safely assume are the Agency's enemies. To me, there's no doubt now that Farrell is working for a higher and much darker force.
Glorfindel's sparring match sounds intense and like it let out a lot of his stress. And God, would that be awesome to watch...In my martial arts studio, for a "birthday gift" (-eyeroll-), they brought out the foam swords and had me spar with everybody in class that day, instructors included. I wish Glorfindel was there to tutor me, since I'm an absolute failure with a sword...or any other type of weapon. XD
Great chapter, and eagerly looking forward to Monday's!

Hi Whipsy. No, that is definitely that the Agency would newer approve of at all.

Glorfindel is probably correct and the 'Bozos' are enjoying tea with Lord Namo at the moment.
I also don't think he should be so dismissive of the 'Godless Elves Contingent' either, I have a feeling they can and will cause some trouble in the future.
I did enjoy the sword fight, I hope Glorfy is feeling better after his workout.
Hm, looks like Elladan has an admirer too!(Smirk!)
How are you doing, are you able to work a full day yet? Take it easy this weekend, no 10 mile hikes through the wilderness, just a gentle strole through the market!
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
Hi Lynda. We'll find out about the fate of the 'bozos' in the next chapter.
Glorfindel and the other Wiseman Elves have been battling the 'Godless Elves COntingent' for the last two years, trying to win them over, but some people are so afraid to look outside themselves that they can't accept anything or anyone who doesn't adhere strictly to their own way of thinking. That threatens whatever sense of security they've created for themselves and they're not about to change their minds about things. I'm sure you've met such people along the way; I know I have.
I'm glad you liked the sword figth and it does look as if Elladan has an admirier, doesn't it? *grin*
As for me, I'm doing well enouogh. Except for Monday, I've managed to get through a full-day's work all the other days of the week without too much trouble so I think I'm finally gettng there. I'm still taking it easy but I do hope to go out to Beaver Lake on Sunday. I don't intend to do any 10-mile hikes, but the nature center has some short easy trails that are no more than half a mile long with benches along the way so you can sit. It'll be probably another month before I'm ready to hike around the lake (3 miles), which is the longest trail there.
Anyway, thanks for commenting. It's greatly appreciated.

Whew! I'd have loved to have been in the gymnasium to watch that fight!
However, even covering their ears can't hide the fact that Glorfindel and company are more than mortal after this display. But Glorfindel definitely needed the release and I'm guessing he managed to get some sleep after leaving the police station. I still think he needs to have some counseling (hopefully, sooner rather than later and it won't have a certain Valar as the counselor) and he still should go run with some wolves for a bit.
I'm very glad that Alex has contacted Mattie. But from the sounds of it, she's not going to be able to do much about Farrell. It looks like the nutcase is working for someone else entirely (now who might that be? There are a number of interesting, and frankly scary, possibilities).
I'm glad to see that Derek seems to be handling things pretty well and that Alex has calmed down a bit. However, I'm not sure how long that will last if Glorfindel pulls another "Because you're only a measly human and I said so!" act on him. And if that happens... brrrr... Wiseman may not be left standing.
A wonderfully written chapter, meldonya, very balanced between conversation, thoughts and action! Bravissimi! I look forward to the next installment.
Edlyn
Author's reply
Hi Edlyn. I'm sure that some of the students were scratching their heads, wondering about their teachers and administrators after this, though I suspect a few were already in the know. As for Glorfindel running with the wolves, that's not likely to happen, but counseling sounds like a good idea. *grin*
We'll see how effective Maddie is as we get toward the end of the story. She'll be making an appearance by then.
And we'll see how the relationship between the Elves and Alex and Derek progresses. There will still be some major bumps in the road before they sort things out.

I'm disappointed in Glorfindel's arrogance. I mean, I suppose he and the other Elves have a right to be somewhat arrogant, but his dismissal of Alex and Derek like that is surely going to backfire on him. I hope Amroth smacks some sense into him. Leader Glorfi may be, but it's going to his head. Amroth should bring down some kingly wrath on him, or something like that. :P

Atto,
The whole discussion about family ties had me laughing, but Farrell's thugs sobered me up. I hope that wherever this lot came from, Farrell doesn't have more waiting in the wings to try again, but unfortunately I would not be surprised if he did. Does Maddy know about all this? *sighs* I hope we will learn what her role is in all this. I liked her so much - I don't want her to be a bad person.
Also, the wording was curious when discussing Alex's family..."IF you are a descendant of Galador of Dol Amroth." Well, is he or isn't he? Is there a way for them to find out? If they knew for sure, surely he would have said "since", not if. Would DNA testing work that far back? Inquiring minds want to know if Misty is Alex's daernana...*grin*
Tye-melin,
Kaylee!
Author's reply
Hi Kaylee. While they had definite confirmation about Alex being a descendant of Arwen via the name Elurín, there's been no real confirmation about his being related to Mithrellas, hence Elladan's use of "if" rather tha "since", but most likely he is, but Elladan isn't going to say so unless he has proof positive. Unfortunately DNA testing wouldn't necessarily prove anything since the relationship would be very tenuous, genetically speaking.
Maddy... well, we may see her by the end of the story and learn just where she stands in all this between Alex and Farrell.

*winces* It's always hard when someone dies suddenly, especially a friend. Even though I don't feel I knew Richard well, I still feel for Glorfindel, who obviously did. He was a good Man and a good friend, and Glorfindel will miss him.
Also, everything does seem to happen to Glorfindel, considering he's the one whose room got ruined...I hope it will be fixed soon! Good for Alex, Daeron and the rest snapping Glorfindel out of his self-pity...which was understandable, yes, but not good for him to be doing.

Author's reply
It is always hard to lose a friend. We don't see much of Richard in this story, but through Glorfindel's eyes we learn much about him and can understand how he and Glorfindel became friends and not just colleagues.
In the earlier part of the story it was mostly "Poor Alex" but in this sequence it's definitely "Poor Glorfi" and there's a reason for this as we will see eventually.

A great chapter, I really enjoyed reading it.
That was a bit high-handed of Glorfindel, to dismiss the humans like that. It'll come to haunt him later. Did Derek take it better than Alex because he's got used to taking orders in the Navy? And I almost suspected that Derek had already guessed the truth about the Elves, but it's nice to know it was a bit of a surprise to him (he isn't sent by another agency, is he?).
Out of curiosity, are there really archaic nasalized stop mutations in Sindarin? *grin*
Author's reply
Hi someone. Glad you liked the chapter. Yes, Glorfindel is a bit high-handed and you're right it'll come to haunt him later. I think you may be correct about Derek taking Glorfindel's orders better than Alex because of his time in the Navy. Alex is too used to doing thing alone. For all "Alex" is meant to be an act and Artemus is his "real" self, I think he has grown genuinely attached to Derek and wants him to be safe. I love the friendship between the two, brotherhood almost it seems (or at least it's getting there). Well, first Glorfindel slipped his leash, and then things ended up with Alex slipping his, too (although not in the same way, obviously). I loved how Lord Namo showed up, and Fionwe, although the thought that crises weren't over was a bit worrying...
"Anyone with a candle will be dismissed"...why not just teach the students about candle safety? *raises eyebrow* Or is it because so many of them are becoming ill and might not be able to focus? I don't know if I agree on that one, anyway. Maybe more like "anyone who doesn't take using candles seriously will be in trouble"?
Well, even with that, it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the chapter. :) I love Lord Namo best, but then he's like that, isn't he? :) I want Roy's hot chocolate recipes...

Hi Kaylee. Well, I think Glorfindel is just not willing to take any chances with people fooling around with candles, hence the harhness of his decree. I suspect that the students will comply, not wanting to be dismissed from the Academy. And Lord Námo is always fun.

Okay, first the honeymoon thing and now Nimrodel is with child. Or children, as the case may be. *wry grin* Well, I can't say that's not a good thing, as it's about time, but right now probably isn't the best time. Will the Norovirus being around hurt the unborn elflings? I know grown elves don't get sick, but still...
Still, I'm happy for Amroth and Nimrodel, that they finally get the family they've always wanted. It's just bad timing, but as you said, there's really not much in the way of *good* timing, either.
Since I've read further, quite a few things in this chapter on my re-read had me wincing as it looked like foreshadowing (and probably was, lol) but I do want to mention I loved how Paul took charge of Derek so he wouldn't see the Elves walking on the snow. Hi Kaylee. I think Amroth and Nimrodel decided they needed to bring new life into the world as a sign of hope for the future in spite of circumstances. And no, the Norovirus wouldn't necessary affect the children, especially if their mother cannot contract it.
