· Chapter 30: The Long Winter
This a beautiful and sad charter. It started so calmed, full of hope and romance. Because Maglor will think that he was not being romantic, but romance is not only poetry and flowers, it is more than that. And then the nightmares came and I really feel so sad for Maglor, such a gentle and good soul and so corrupted and damaged by that cursed jewel and Oath. I wish that he accepts all this people help and forgive himself, it seems that this long wait for the final trip have many purposes, find hope for dispirited elves, find Arthalion, find love, find the Silmaril and find Maglor's soul.
Your Denethor is incredible wise and I loved, loved his little speech to Maglor. His line about loving himself first before loving another one it is the best that you have given us so far, IMHO. Thank you
As a side note, I hate the harsh northern winter, the long nights, the cold, the snow...it really looks very pretty in a postcard and maybe for a short vacation, but it is something that I don't like. I was born and raised on the tropic and tried to live for almost 4 years in Ohio and I couldn't adapt. I ran all the way to Southern California, now, that is the perfect weather!
Author's reply
Hi Fantasia. I think you're right about the long wait for the final trip has many purposes. It was about more than just getting to Aman the quickest way possible. The journey is more meaningful than the destination and it's how we travel that matters, not how or when we arrive.
I'm glad you like Denethor so much. I've grown to love him as well. He doesn't see himself as one of the Wise, but he is, no less than Elrond.
Well, I grew up in the northeast and I hate winters too, but unfortunately, at the present moment, I'm stuck here. Perhaps someday I'll be able to move to warmer climes. Or the poles will reverse or something and Syracuse will become the new San Diego. LOL!
Thanks for reviewing. It's very much appreciated.

Excuse the language but damn Morgoth, damn Feanor for creating the Silmarills and listening to Morgoth's lies, damn the Oath and his sons for taking it and damn Maglor for being such a stubborn fool!
I think that is everyone who needs damning!
Poor Maglor, Denethor is right, the first person he needs to forgive is himself, he needs to take a leaf out of Glorfindels book though and use a little compassion on himself. He does need to make a decision about the Silmarill until he has it will control all that he does to some extent.
It's a little early and I am not quite awake yet, need my caffeine!
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
You're excused, Lynda. I'm sure many readers feel the same as you. And you're right about Maglor needing to take a leaf out of Glorfindel's book and show some compassion to himself. He will make a decision about the Silmaril in the next chapter, I promise, and then we will see what he does and how it goes with him and the others.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Hugs back.

Poor tortured Maglor. I love how you've written the Silmaril as a parallel with the One Ring. Maglor's reactions--rage, drawing the knife--echoes Gollum and even Bilbo's emotions and actions when they lost the Ring. Fettered indeed is one who cannot throw away a treasure at need... even a Silmaril. I suspect Maglor's journey to his own final release will be wrenching.
Author's reply
Hi Cairistiona. I figured in their own way the Silmarils were as much symbols of addiction as the One Ring even though they were created with no evil intent. Fëanor's obsession with them and Morgoth's lust for them made them so. As for Maglor, we will see just how wrenching his journey to his own final release is and what comes of it. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.

I have no real answers for you, my friend, except to say you have thirty other people who are willing to help you if you would let them. You do not have to do this on your own.
So true. Could Frodo have made it to the Cracks of Doom without the Fellowship? Could Beren have accomplished so much without Huan and Luthien? And now a new and harder task is set before Maglor -- to forgive himself. What a wonderful story.
Author's reply
I'm glad you think this is a wonderful story, Shirebound. I wasn't sure when I started posted it (or even as I was writing it) if anyone would like it.
Forgiving oneself is the hardest thing to do, but necessary. Hopefully, Maglor will eventually forgive himself for just being Maglor, if nothing else.
Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I very much appreciate it.

Great chapter. I knew winter was going to be tough. Poor Maglor with those awful dreams. I doubt he ever had friends who care for him as much as his current friends care. They are trying so hard to help. May Maglor understand and respond. Thanks as always.
Author's reply
I doubt it, too, UTfrog. It's good that he has such sympathetic friends and hopefully Maglor will see them as such and not as his "gaolors". Glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

Wow! Master Elrond must be truly wise indeed! But he did have all the time in the world, not to mention his heritagr and experiences, to accumulate such lore and wisdom.
I am sorry that the Silmaril is now haunting Maglor again. I hope he will be able to work it out for himself. Its good that he has a loving and understanding support group, especially Gloredhel and Arthalion who is almost like a foster son to him. I'm alsonglad he has a wise leader in Denethor.
I'm looking forward to the next chapter. Have a good weekend!
Author's reply
Hi Celeth. Maglor really needs to address the Silmaril and his Oath before he can hope to leave Middle-earth and return home to Aman. I don't think the Valar will allow him to come otherwise. Luckily, Maglor has many friends who love and support him and he will find a way as we will see.
Have a great weekend, yourself, and thanks for reviewing. It's greatly appreciated.

Could there be more than one romance in the making? I would love to see something nice like that happen to Maglor. Glóredhel would be a good match for hime. [
Author's reply
I think Glóredhel is a good match for Maglor, too, Tari. We'll have to see how things progres between them. Maglor does deserve happiness. Thanks for leaving a review. It's much appreciated.

ooooh~ young love~ (well for relative values of "young" I guess). Poor Maglor, he can't escape even in his dreams it seems, but I'm glad he's getting better!

Love is always young, bookworm, no matter how old the recipients. We will see how the dreams impact Maglor and the others in the next chapter. Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

· Chapter 29: Recuperation
Finally it looks like romance is starting to bloom between Maglor and Gloredhel. I hope they fall in love and marry; I am sure Maglor will need lots of support when they get to Valinor and he has to face his family's victims - including the ones they didn't actually kill. At least there is now the Harthadrim who accept him as one of their own, but it would still be good for him if he has someone's love when he does undergo that kind of trial. If it drew them closer to each other I am almost glad that he was injured in the fight with the cat creatures, but I am thankful that he is now much better, and well enough to laugh and enjoy a joke with Gloredhel. Things are looking up :)
Author's reply
Hi Celeth. Things are looking up, indeed, though there is still a long road ahead of them all and who can say where it will lead any of them? We'll see how the relationship between Maglor and Glóredhel develops as the story progresses. If nothing else, Maglor knows that he has a family with the Harthadrim and that is more than he had before. Thanks for leaving a comment. It's much appreciated.

First come...
"OW" I just got bapped in the back of the head by Glóredhel. And it hurt too! Darn it. *rubs back of head and glances over at Maglor* "Um, joking?" Jeesh get attacked by some skanking cats and lose your sense of humor.
Glad he is feeling better tho
Author's reply
And no wonder, there not being any trees for them to be k-i-s-s-i-n-g in yet. LOL! And yes, it is nice to see him feeling better. Thanks for reviewing, Laer. It's appreciated greatly.

Those cats pack quite a punch. I think Denethor is right that the Silmaril may not have finished with Maglor - but I can see something satisfyingly complete about his returning to The West with it.
And I have wondered over the past few chapters about the relationship developing between him and Glóredhel - it is nice to see it progressing as it is.
Author's reply
Hi curiouswombat. Yes, those cats certainly are lethal. And Denethor is very wise, as we will see. And we will see soon what Maglor decides to do with the Silmaril. I'm glad you approve of the relationship developing between Maglor and Glóredhel. If anyone deserves some happiness it's Maglor.
Thanks for reviewing. It's very much appreciated.

Maglor has had more than his share of misery, but is handling this episode beautifully. The closeness of the elves is somthing we can all learn from and copy.
Author's reply
Indeed he has, Tari, but he is handling things very well. And you are correct that we could all learn from and copy the care and concern that the Elves have for one another. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I appreciate it.

Home at last, but poor Maglor is still suffering, he is getting better though. He does not seem to be able to get away from the Demon Cats, they and the Silmarill still invade his dreams. Loved the image of the cats playing with the
Silmarill. Mine is wrecking havoc on the Gopher population at the moment the latest count is 11.
Hm, is a romance budding between Gloredhel and Maglor, being where they are is going to make it hard for Maglor to take her home to meet Nana!
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
Hi Lynda. The dreams will prove important as we will see shortly. As for any romance budding, that also remains to be seen, but it does seem as if romance is in the air and not just between Maglor and GLóredhel. Thanks for leaving a reivew. It's greatly appreciated. Hugs.

Love is in the air, good. I enjoyed this chapter, poor Maglor, but not too poor...
They made such a fuss about privacy, and when they are disabled with he fever they will need all the help they can get. My mother in law and one of my sister in law are nurses, you have to see them when we are really sick or in the hospital, they are so forceful annoying, they won't let you do nothing by yourself.
Author's reply
Indeed it is, Fantasia. And don't tell me about nurses and hospitals. I've had my fair share of having to put up with them in my day. *grin* I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.

PS: Today I had the thought of your EA-'verse Finrod discovering a copy of Twilight and it made me cackle with horrified laughter for a good five minutes.
Author's reply
Hi Kevana. Well, as soon as there are any trees around the rhyme will be appropriate to chant. *grin* And they are cute together, aren't they?

The cavalry arrived in the nick of time. For a moment I was worried that they would have death to mourn. So, a broken arm whole not pretty is much better than the alternative. Now to get "home". It might be temporary, but for now it is all they have.
Author's reply
I was a bit worried, too, as I was writing this scene and breathed a sigh of relief with the others when Denethor & Co. arrived. And home is where the heart is, they say, but for now the Towers will do in a pinch. Thanks for reviewing. I greatly appreciate it.

Now to get to the towers in a raging storm with Maglor injured so badly that he can barely run. And as the icing on the cake, these evil cats are also on their tail. As if they didn't have trouble enough. Luckily for me, the next chapter is already out.
