This story is adorable. I can see why Elrond would not want to mention Elrohir's near-death experience, but I must say that I agree with the twins: Elrohir had a right to know. Great job! This is going on my favourites list!

LOTRFaith · 5 March 2005 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

Now I understand! lol.. I laughed so hard at the "Could I be you?" Hilarious! I loved it:-D

Author's reply

The twins were just a tiny bit drunk, hence the rather odd remark! Thanks for reading this tale as well. It explains the back story to Námo's comment.

LKK · 20 August 2004 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

“Good.” Elrohir nodded, satisfied. “El was wondering if he was me. I told him I was.” Elrond blinked, looking a little bemused, and interrupted before the conversation could become any more convoluted. Thank you, Elrond! I was going a little cross-eyed trying to follow the conversation myself. :) Poor Elrohir. It must have been quite a shock to discover he had nearly died before he was an hour old. On the whole, he handled it well. The brief anger was clearly the shock talking. Elladan definitely would have missed his brother had Elrohir not survived. I wonder if he would ever have asked about it? Or would he have just spent his life feeling the emptiness but never knowing why? Fortunately, that's a question that need never be asked. I'm sorry to see Two By Two end, Jay. I'll be sure to pick up the next series when you start it.

Author's reply

Poor Elrohir. The surprise of finding out he'd been mixed up with his brother and might be Elladan was nothing compared with the next surprise. I think I'd have been angrier than he was. I think Elladan would eventually have asked or talked to someone who would tell him - another shock! It's best to keep such things in the open, I think.

Nilmandra · 15 August 2004 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

How hard for Elrond to have to retell this story. In todays day and age, we wouldn't think twice about this, but then..well, it is fortunate that a miracle happened and a prayer was answered. I am glad they can look on Firene fondly too!

Author's reply

I think if Elrohir had grown up knowing the story it would have been easier for everyone in the end. His admiration for his father has gone up several notches. I rather like Firiene, but she seemed to cause trouble wherever she went!

Dot · 15 August 2004 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

I’ve been following this all along. Sorry I haven’t reviewed before. I really enjoyed it, especially watching Elrond as a loving husband and learning to be a father. This last chapter was so touching. How awful for Elrond to have to relive that time. I like the fact that he apparently isn’t at all troubled any more by the fact that the bracelets were removed and can even smile about it but still feels the pain of what happened with Elrohir so deeply. I’m glad you showed not just the effect the truth had on Elrohir but on Elladan too, because he’s the one who would have lived without someone he feels a part of himself. It’s interesting to wonder if he’d have known he had a twin should Elrohir have died at birth. I love the way you’ve shown them to be practically one person when they were young but have grown into two very distinct personalities, albeit still as close. Oh, and I also really like the little touches you add to the scene, like Elrond closing his eyes and reaching out his hand as he remembers what he did so long ago, and Elladan moving forward to grip his twin’s shoulder, not just as support but almost as though he himself needs to feel him there. Great story as always, Jay.

Author's reply

Thank you for the lovely long review. I'm glad you enjoy the little details - I tend to picture a scene in my mind, as if it's on TV, and write what I see and hear, or else put myself in the character's position. I think that if Elrohir had died, Elladan would have always felt very lonely, even if he never knew why.

Bodkin · 14 August 2004 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

There is never a right moment to make momentous announcements - which is why you're now supposed to tell children everything from the beginning. Things like adoption and near-death experiences and so on. Like the way they spotted at once that Elrond was expecting something much worse than the 'changed just after birth' story. The twins were very philosophical about it all in the end. After all - near-death or not, they both survived and are there for each other. Shame it's finished. Hope you had a good holiday.

Author's reply

I agree that it would have been better for El and El to have known all this from the beginning. It wouldn't have come as such a shock then. And things have a way of coming out when least expected, just as in this story! I have more adventures planned for the twins, don't worry! And thank you, I had a lovely holiday. Jay

daw the minstrel · 14 August 2004 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

Oddly enough, the moment that stuck in my mind most from this chapter is when Elladan says "What do you mean?" and Elrond says "You know what it means." I think that stood out for me because Elrond's answer was true and realistic and yet kind of unpredictable. If I had covered up the next paragraph, I would not have been able to guess it. So it seemed really alive to me. It's interesting to ponder if Elladan would have known he was missing someone.

Author's reply

I tend to run conversations and dialogue through my head before I write a scene, seeing the characters as real people. How would they react? What would they say? Elladan did of course know what his father meant - he just couldn't believe it. And I'm quite sure he would have known there was something wrong. Bearing in mind the recent discussion on reviews, thank you for picking out particular sections you liked!

Karri · 14 August 2004 · Chapter 8: Epilogue - Revelations (Part Two)

A wonderful and thoughtful conclusion, Jay. It sounds like you have done your research into the loss of a twin. This line was my favortie: “El was wondering if he was me. I told him I was.” But overall, I really enjoy your characterizations of the twins and how well you make each a distinct individual

Author's reply

I just tried to imagine how twins as close as El and El would feel if separated at birth. Despite their closeness, I try to make them different, not interchangeable, so I'm glad that worked. When Elrohir said 'El was wondering if he was me. I told him I was,' he was just a little drunk. It made perfect sense to him, but probably not to anyone else!

Nilmandra · 31 July 2004 · Chapter 7: Epilogue - Revelations (Part One)

Elrond is going to be thrilled that Firene has again managed to upset the twins' identities! How interetsing that no one else has managed to bring up this event in their long years in Imladris, but Firene has. This elf does have a knack for upsetting the apple cart with good intentions. :D

Author's reply

Firiene tends to say and do the wrong things, without meaning to cause havoc! Now she's let slip that something happened to Elrohir, and he means to find out. Elrond, who has tried hard to forget such a traumatic event (which is why it was never mentioned), will indeed be thrilled.

Lianna · 29 July 2004 · Chapter 7: Epilogue - Revelations (Part One)

Sorry to see this end, but I can appreciate that you got yourself locked into a pattern that would be hard to continue. I'm kind of surprised that Elrohir didn't grow up knowing all along that he almost died when he was born. But maybe that's just because I come from a family where nobody ever bothers keeping secrets because it's too much trouble (we are so lazy). It will be interesting to see Elrohir's and Elladan's reactions to learning about the emergency and Elrond's explanation of why it was never revealed before.

Author's reply

Baby elfling twins are sweet, but there's a limit to what I can write about them. Elrond didn't say anything before because it was simply something no one wanted to think about at first, and it's not an easy subject to casually introduce later on!

Bodkin · 29 July 2004 · Chapter 7: Epilogue - Revelations (Part One)

Such a shame to stop this! They are so sweet. I love the tormenting of the twins - tell them they might be muddled up, hint there was a bigger problem and disappear. You just couldn't get human males flirting convincingly with someone who had been their babysitter - 20 years is just too big a gap. It must be odd with elves - after the first millennia, surely age really doesn't matter. I shall miss the cute baby elflings.

Author's reply

The baby twins are sweet, but there's only so much I can write about them like this. As young elflings they will be into more mischief, and asserting their individuality - there's more potential for stories. I think Elrohir could flirt with anyone! (and I wish he'd try it with me ...)

daw the minstrel · 29 July 2004 · Chapter 7: Epilogue - Revelations (Part One)

Oh wonderful! This made me laugh. The way elves' ages seem to even out when they're adults makes all kinds of funny things possible. And these two are going to have some confusing questions for their parents. I hope they're all sober!

Author's reply

Elrohir will soon be very sober indeed when he hears what happened - it must be rather a shock! As an apprentice, Firiene would have been around her majority at the time - so what's 50 years age difference when one is 2000?

Karri · 29 July 2004 · Chapter 7: Epilogue - Revelations (Part One)

Uh-oh, the cat's out of the bag. It's a good thing the tale makes for such a sweet one. I'm sure the twins will be touched if they manage to get it out of nana and ada.

Author's reply

Yes, they will know the whole story soon - and poor Elrohir will get rather a shock. It will make them appreciate Elrond even more!

LOTR lover · 28 July 2004 · Chapter 6: What's In A Name?

"'Elrond, you wretch!'" I love it! They're hardly born, and *Elrond* is playing twin games with them! What an inspired moment, Jay!

Author's reply

That's my favourite part in this chapter - I'm glad someone else liked it as well. Poor Celebrian had an anxious moment there.

Nilmandra · 27 July 2004 · Chapter 6: What's In A Name?

Ah, this is a nice way of showing the parent/child fear bonding without long explanations :D. They *knew* each little soul - very nice.

Author's reply

I didn't feel capable of describing the intricacies of bonding, so I decided that Celebrian couldn't describe it either. She just knew her sons.

Lianna · 27 July 2004 · Chapter 6: What's In A Name?

I just discovered this story, and I have been catching up on it. You've got me hooked. I was almost afraid you would really let Elrohir die -- after all, you did kill off Legolas in the very first chapter of your very first LOTR fanfic; who knows what you are capable of doing? But this is a very good story. A little angst, a little sweetness, a little humor, a lot of exhaustion. That's pretty much what early parenthood is all about. I must admit, however, that I never thought about the need for parents of identical twins to use some sort of trick to tell their babies apart! I do not write fanfiction; I only read it. But as it happens, I earn my living as an editor (of technical books). Most of the manuscripts that come my way are nowhere near as clearly written or error-free as your stories are. My compliments to you and your beta reader.

Author's reply

< ... you did kill off Legolas in the very first chapter of your very first LOTR fanfic; who knows what you are capable of doing?> Yes, I did, and I'm still not sure where that came from! I'm so glad you like the story - this one is 90% fluff, with just a little angst (but Elrohir is fine, really!) Thank you - especially as I don't use a beta reader! (I should, I know - I check and re-check stories, and as soon as I publish one I notice something wrong!)

daw the minstrel · 27 July 2004 · Chapter 6: What's In A Name?

Oh good for Naneth! And good for Ada too. I love the way these elves can identify their kids by just sensing them. I remember not wanting to leave my son for very long when he was first born. I think I had more separation anxiety than he did.

Author's reply

I think Elves would be able to do that. And bearing in mind that Celebrian is Galadriel's daughter, I'm *quite* sure she can tell the twins apart! ;) The first time I left my son, he was spoilt rotten by my Mum and Dad ...

Karri · 27 July 2004 · Chapter 6: What's In A Name?

Very sweet! I am glad that nana and ada could tell them apart. :-)

Author's reply

I think they *would* be able to tell. Though it would make an interesting basis for a story if they couldn't tell them apart ...

Bodkin · 27 July 2004 · Chapter 6: What's In A Name?

Big huge aaaahhhhh. I'm glad that Elrond and Celebrian knew which was which. It's funny to look back on having tiny babies - you long for them to sleep, then hover over them watching to make sure they are breathing. You long to get away and are then itching to get back. And you think it will last for ever, and it's over in moments, leaving you years to regret that you were too exhausted and stressed to enjoy it properly.

Author's reply

I know what you mean - but I preferred the toddling/young child years. I found them more interesting then. I was never broody over babies. I'm sure Elrond and Celebrian will enjoy this time with their sons, though - at least they are not deliberately causing chaos yet!

Any · 7 July 2004 · Chapter 5: Bathtime

*LOL* Oh no, poor Firiene(with double-dots over the last e *gg*)! I'm sure Celebrían and Elrond can tell the twins apart. What a nice story, Jay. I love how everyone falls for the twins. Funny I'm currently working on something similar - little Legolas bringing down a proud, strong, mighty King of Mirkwood! *LOL* ;) Just one little nitpick: I am a twin myself and my twinsister and I were just as big as any other babies so I can tell from own experience (hehe) that twins aren't necessarily smaller than other newborns :) Love your stuff! :) ~Any

Author's reply

I'd love to read that! I love Good!Thranduil stories. E and C will be able to tell the twins apart, though no one else can at this stage. I confess to virtually no knowledge of twins at all, but just guessed that with two in a space designed for one, they'd be smaller! Thanks for the review.

paranoidangel · 5 July 2004 · Chapter 5: Bathtime

I also thought you were going to do something terrible to the twins, so I laughed in the face of this 'tragedy'. I'm looking forward to seeing how they resolve it though.

Author's reply

Do something terrible to the twins? Would I do that? I'm trying hard for 'light and fluffy' with this tale, but the angst bunnies keep getting in. Don't worry, Elrond and Celebrian have their methods.

Bodkin · 5 July 2004 · Chapter 5: Bathtime

Content and clean-smelling elflings - how adorable. I'm sure their parents will be able to sort them out, especially as Elrond has done a major healing on Elrohir. And if they can't - just keep it secret, OK? Never let them know of the confusion! Joint conception, exactly the same age - just call them both El. I expect the elves are too honest to simply replace the bracelets and hope no-one notices! I love them sleeping in a drawer, by the way. Such a sensible place to put them.

Author's reply

I think Elrond and Celebrian will work it out correctly. And E2 will not find out about either event for a very long time (the revelation may appear in the eventual epilogue to this story one day). The twins will eventually have a cradle more suitable to their status, but for now the drawer will have to do.

Nilmandra · 5 July 2004 · Chapter 5: Bathtime

I must admit, Jay, that I thought you were going to do something awful to the infants - so only having name bracelets taken off seems like a good thing! I think C & E can tell them apart - there will be something they will sense or some mark they will know. The infants are smart too. IF they've been named, they will tell their parents in some little way :D

Author's reply

I've already done something awful to Elrohir, so they all deserve a break. This is only minor angst really, and C & E and E2 will all have their ways of knowing who is who.

LKK · 4 July 2004 · Chapter 5: Bathtime

Don't bother correcting me; I know that the apprentice didn't *take* the bracelets. She just took the bracelets *off*. It's amazing what a difference one word can have, isn't it? LKK *makes note never to review at midnight again*

Author's reply

I knew what you meant!

LKK · 4 July 2004 · Chapter 5: Bathtime

So the apprentice took the name bracelets, eh? Is that like the twinnish equivalent of "Throwing the baby out with the bathwater"? ;) I have no idea what prompted me to think of that except perhaps that it's midnight and I should be asleep rather than reading your story. But I've been horribly busy the past few days and missed the last chapter and I was terribly curious as to what had happened. Hm. I seem to be rambling a bit. I gotta stop reviewing when I'm tired. Okay. At least there's one thing I'm sure of. I love this look at the twins' earliest (and I do mean *earliest*!) days. I'm glad you've picked this story back up, Jay. I was missing it. :)

Author's reply

She took the instruction 'undress them' a little too literally, I'm afraid. Progress on this story has been intermittant, depending on the plot bunnies, but I'm glad you like it enough to miss it. And I don't mind rambling. It's better than not reviewing at all!
