A New Life

---

“Please.” The young dark haired woman begged. “You must do this for me.”

Faramir sat up his curiosity aroused by the young woman begging one of the chief healers in the city of Minas Tirith.

“I can not do this for you.” The healer said firmly.

“Is there nothing I can give you? Nothing I can say.” The woman pleaded.

“Nothing.” The healer said firmly again and walked away.

The young woman looked deflated and carefully sat down on nearby rock.

Faramir rose from his own seat and walked over to the young woman. “Is there something a matter?” He asked quietly.

The young woman looked up, tears in her pale blue eyes. “Yes.” She said bitterly. “But there isn’t anything I can do about.” She choked back a sob.

“Perhaps there is something I can do.” Faramir offered.

The young woman shook her head. “I thank you for the offer but.” Her bottom lip trembled. “I don’t think you could help me.”

“Well at least you can tell me your troubles.” Faramir said soothingly. “My name is Faramir. What’s yours?”

“Adrienne.” The young woman tried to smile but failed miserably.

“Hello Adrienne.” Faramir gave a slight bow. “Now tell me what your trouble is.”

“I’m pregnant.” Adrienne blurted out. “It was a mistake. I thought I was going to be married to Drey and he convinced me that it wouldn’t hurt if we proceeded to the bed before we were married.” She sobbed. “But he left the very next morning and said that he changed his mind.”

Faramir said nothing, letting the young woman cry her pain out.

“I haven’t seen him since.” She cried. “And now I am left with this!” She gestured toward her slightly swollen womb.

“Even though you did make a mistake, the child in your womb certainly is not.” Faramir stated. “The child was created between a man and a woman. That child is no mistake.”

“I care not.” The young woman said sullenly. “I wish it to leave.”

“Leave?” Faramir cried. “You are carrying a miracle within your body, one of life’s greatest wonders. You are carrying a new life within you.”

“It is a mistake.” Adrienne said crossly. “And I do not want it.”

“Is that why you are asking the healer for help?” Faramir inquired softly. “To rid yourself of this ‘mistake’?”

“Yes.” The young woman said firmly.

“You really want to kill the new life within you.” Faramir stated.

Adrienne looked down. “It’s not a baby yet.” She defended.

“Yet.” Faramir leaned forward, then sprang up as an idea came to him. “Come with me.” He drew her up gently tucking her arm into his.

“Where?” Adrienne asked quizzically.

“I want to show you something.” Faramir smiled mysteriously.

“Alright.” Adrienne smiled back.

They walked for a few minutes, each in their own thoughts, enjoying the bright sunshine on their backs and the bright blue sky above them.

Stopping at a door, Faramir quietly knocked.

The door opened revealing an older buxom lady with stray gray hairs falling from her bun. “Faramir!” She cried delighted. “Come in. Come in.” She opened the door wider. “And how is this pretty young lady?” She asked, beaming at the young woman.

“Her name is Adrienne.” Faramir returned easily. “I was going to show her some of the babies.”

Adrienne stiffened but said nothing.

“Adrienne, this is a dear friend of mine, Corienne. Corienne, meet Adrienne.”

The two ladies smiled and curtseyed. “I am very pleased to meet you.” Corienne gushed. “Any friend of Faramir is always welcomed here.”

“Thank you.” Adrienne said softly, shooting an accusing glare at Faramir, which Corienne either did not see or choose not to say anything about it.

“How is Sara?” Faramir asked. “Or Darin?”

Corienne laughed. “They are well, eating like little pigs they are.” She ushered them into the next room.

Adrienne stiffened. There were several babies all over the room. Attendants scurried around the room ensuring all the babies safe and happy.

“What is this place?” She whispered.

“Corienne lost her husband just three days after they were wed. She was heartbroken and went for a walk when she found a baby that was thrown into the trash.”

“Alive?” Adrienne asked horrified.

“Yes.” Faramir replied. “She took him in and began to look for other babies that were carelessly tossed to the side. My father heard about it and decided to give her a fund.”

A baby squealed in delight.

Adrienne flinched.

“She soon began to give sanctuary to women who like you found themselves pregnant and didn’t want the child. They would carry to full term, give birth, and give the baby over to Corienne and leave.”

“That’s it?” Adrienne asked her mind whirling. “No questions asked?”

“No questions asked.” Faramir affirmed.

“Come.” He tugged at her arm. “I want to introduce you to Sara.” He led her up a winding stair. “She was born about three months early and still struggles to live.” He quietly opened the door.

“Faramir.” The delight on the young attendants face was bright. “I was just about to feed Sara so she is wide awake.”

Faramir chuckled and moved to the crib. A tiny babe lay within. She was about the size of Faramir’s hand and wrist. A small patch of yellow fluff lay smoothed on the top of her head.

“Hello little one.” Faramir smiled, gently rubbing her hand with his forefinger. “I want you to meet someone.” He gestured for Adrienne to step closer. “Her name is Adrienne.”

The babe’s eyes were wide open revealing beautiful gray eyes.

Adrienne’s breath caught. Sara’s hands were perfectly formed, as were her feet. “So tiny.” She whispered, reaching out to touch the tiny toes and fingers. She was surprised when Sara opened her tiny hand and grasped Adrienne’s finger.

The tiny babe seemed to give a smile.

Adrienne’s bottom lip trembled as she fought back the tears already welling in her eyes. “She is perfect.” She whispered.

Faramir said nothing, letting Adrienne continue to gaze at the tiny babe before her.

“Would you like to hold her?” The young attendant stepped forward, holding a tiny bottle in one hand.

“Can I?” The look on Adrienne’s face was priceless.

“Of course!” The attendant said cheerily. She carefully lifted Sara up and making sure her head wouldn’t loll about, gently placed the baby in Adrienne’s arms.

“She’s so light.” Adrienne cried softly, delighted.

“Here.” The attendant handed Adrienne the bottle. “Try and see if she will eat anything.”

Placing the bottle against the tiny perfectly formed lips, Adrienne was surprised to see them open and the bottle was eagerly accepted.

She looked up at Faramir, tears in her pale blue eyes. “Thank you.” She whispered.

Faramir smiled. “I am glad I could help.” He turned and walked out. He greeted Corienne once again and told her of Adrienne’s plight and gave his word that he would give her plenty of finances to ensure that Adrienne would be well looked after and stepped into the sunshine.

As he crossed the threshold of his own house he was greeted by a gurgle and Ewoyn’s laughter.

“Your papa’s home.” Ewoyn greeted, planting a kiss upon Faramir’s lips.

“How is our little one?” Faramir asked.

“About to take a nap.” Ewoyn smiled.

“I’ll put him to bed.” Faramir volunteered.

“Thank you.”

Faramir easily took the small frame into his arms, and unable to resist counted the perfectly formed ten fingers and ten toes. Peeked at the tiny bellybutton, and placed a kiss on the smooth forehead.

‘Babies are a miracle.’ He thought and stepping into the next room began to hum a lullaby that his father had hummed to him when he was just a babe as well.
