One Day  by MagicalRachel

One Day (Rated G)

She sees him watching her as he walks into the inn with his father. His master too, notices it, but he doesn't see the others. She sees them all watching her, the lone female in a room full of males, and even if she doesn't she hears tales of them anyway. Her brother is always watching, but he knows better than to bother her about him: the one she has known for an age; the one who intrigues her. She gazes over the crowd to the table where he sits, where he always sits, and wonders if ever she'll sit there too. The dark haired one catches her eye and smiles, nodding towards him. He knows. Perhaps he knows about them both. One day.

Rosie laughs and turns her attention to the hobbit waiting to be served.

"And what can I do for you today, master?"

"Four of your finest please, Rosie lass."

She meets the Gaffer's eyes as she pours the ales. One day she would find the courage to ask him, or Mr Frodo ,whether she might possibly have caught Samwise's eye.

One day.

Sparkle (Rated G)

Rosie smiled as she washed the dishes in the kitchen and watched the soap bubbles sparkle in the sunlight.

Sparkle.

Not a word she wanted to forget.

She could still see the sparkle in Samwise's eyes as he drew her away from the throng at the party. His mischievous look, the one she remembered most from when he was younger. When he had less cares about himself. When he was still young enough to play with girls and not feel embarrassed.

She saw the sparkle on the cool water as they sat near the pond that night. Not on the banks, mind, there were only so many places a Gamgee could be coaxed into going, and by the pond wasn't one of them. He had smiled, that coy smile she loved so much, and all Rosie had been able to think was that word.

Sparkle.

He had taken her hand and held it in his lap, running the rough edge of his thumb along the freckled skin of her wrist. He told her that he would be leaving for a while, to take care of some business with Mr Frodo in Buckland, and that he might not be back for some time, but would she wait for him? She had known the answer for some time, of course, but had not expected the question. And her expression of surprise and delight, and her answer.... and the way it lit Samwise's eyes up like a million diamonds glinting in the moonlight. Not glinting..... sparkling.

And one day, she would sparkle with him.

Rosie shook her head gently, and returned to the cups and saucers, barely noticing that the water had turned cold as she watched the bubbles.

Ivory Lace

Her long brown curls draped softly down her back as she stood up and attempted to fasten the buttons on the dress herself. The arrangement required two really, but she wanted no other to see her fantastical imaginings. They would think her silly, for they had not the faith she had. Her face flushed with effort, bare but for the rosebud salve she had accentuated her full lips with, she stepped back and admired herself in the glass. It was perfect; the dress of her mother and, before that, her grandmother; yet there was something missing. Something not even the addition of the matching ivory hued veil could provide.

Rose sighed as she set about removing the gown from her personage. One day.... One day Samwise would return to her and the day would be complete.
