A drabble is a piece of writing of exactly 100 words. Here are four drabbles from four very different times in Frodo’s life. I hope you enjoy them. (Readers of “Master of Bag End” will recognize drabble #2 from Chapter 1 of that story.) This is a companion piece to “Peregrin Took: Child, Tween, Knight”. DISCLAIMER: Of course. The characters don’t belong to me, I just get to think about them day and night. _________________________ FIRST VISIT “Bilbo!” A blur of blue eyes, tumbled curls and giggles launched themselves into the old hobbit’s outstretched arms. “I finally get to see where you live, Bilbo!” The tiny child wrapped his legs around his uncle’s waist, and bounced with excitement as Bilbo carried him up The Hill. Squirming about, he tried to see everything at once. “Is that Bag End? Why is it called that? Look at all the gardens you have! Will you tell me lots of stories? Is supper to be soon? Which bedroom do I get?” “Frodo-lad,” Bilbo chuckled, “I’m happy to see you, too.” MASTER OF BAG END Bag End… is mine now? And everything in it? Including your ring. Keep it safe… I’ll hide it under your maps. You love it, you never let it out of your sight; how could you part with it? Just leave it behind, on the floor like that? Did it drop out of your pocket? Someday I’ll follow you, and find you, and give it back. Or maybe you’ll realize it’s gone, and return to look for it, and you’ll say Frodo-lad! Did I forget to say goodbye? And we’ll hug and cry and you’ll explain everything to me. Won’t you? GRACE Returning the crown to Faramir, I suddenly realized it would be too heavy for Frodo to easily hold and carry, even such a short distance. But too late -- Faramir kneels before the honored Ring-bearer with bowed head, holding out the crown. Frodo grasps it in both hands, arms trembling almost imperceptibly, but no sign of strain is seen on his face as he walks smoothly to Gandalf, and holds it up. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, and marvel anew as Frodo bears yet one more weighty burden -- as all the others -- with grace. RIVENDELL "...and in that Tower, when I heard singing.. I knew it was you. I thought you had died, and somehow found me, and were letting me know I wasn't alone. I could hardly bear it, thinking you were dead and I would never see you again, after everything you'd done for me, but after that, I knew everything would be all right. If we had been together, I know you would have comforted me, and hearing that song somehow... did the same thing." Frodo smiled, and gently kissed the sleeping hobbit. "Goodnight, Bilbo. I'll tell you more about our adventure tomorrow." |
