Grey Shores and Other Poems  by Meldewen Ilce

I assumed Frodo
Would always be in my life
Just like Merry dear

How could I know that
A thrice-cursed Ring would wound
And take him away

Frodo dear never
Was the same after the Ring
Scarred his gentle soul

Now at the sea shore
I face loosing him
Trying to come to terms

Gently, he hugs me
Whispering, “Please don’t weep, Pip.”
While wiping my tears

“How can I not?” as
I meet his eyes one last time
Cousin dear lost

We watch as the grey
Ship carries Frodo away
Forever from us

Clinging to Merry
We turn from the horizon
With our tears falling

We will return home
And by living our lives full
We honor Frodo
