We halt at the foot of Caradhras, weary after our failed attempt to cross the Redhorn Gate. As I smoke and consider our next move, I hear Frodo and Sam arguing.

"But sir, you know you feel the cold more since -- "

"No, Sam. You need your blanket too, and I will not have you freeze all night because you gave it to me. Now, that's that. Go to sleep."

Later, I see Sam stealthily unroll himself and settle his blanket over his slumbering master.

Such loving defiance must be rewarded. After Sam too sleeps, I step over and cover them both with my own blanket.
