This isn't Pippin's first conspiracy.

But this time, it's no bully or know-it-all, but Frodo who is the object: Frodo who is ordinarily no fool, but can't see past his nose when preoccupied. He's making it laughably easy, and it's marvelous.

It all seemed a big lark, until they learned the whole, horrible truth from Sam.

Now, when Pippin catches Frodo gazing at him as if to memorize him, all he wants to do is hug him and tell him everything.

Instead, he tells Frodo to paint his picture, it'll last longer. They laugh.

And Pippin wonders who's fooling who.
