Lindelea!

How lovely! Merry has his new (and yet somehow old) pony! Yay! Love the name! "Jewel" I love how Frodo and Merry can talk to each other, at least a little bit each having their own troubles, they can help each other along. Your gift with writing Hobbits is also a Jewel!

Must dash to work! Hope you are doing well as well! :-)

I'm so glad this chapter gave you a lift before dashing off to work! If I'm remembering right (and I very well may not be; it was more than two decades ago), I think this might have been the first chapter written, even though I had an idea of how the rest of the story would go (and that idea, which included "Ruby" and Frodo's use of Arwen's jewel to help Merry, prompted the name he chose for the pony). I'm still amazed when so many diverse elements come together to form a cohesive whole. I guess it's just more evidence for the incredible richness and meaning inherent to Tolkien's world.

I hope this reply finds you well.

What a wonderful surprise for Merry. ❤️ So glad poor Jewel was in the right place at the right time, and that Farmer Cotton let his boys keep him!

Author Reply: Yes, the pony is one of the jewels the story is named for!

Thanks so much for reading and stopping to share your thoughts.

The twin to his other pony, and now recovering and finding just the proper Hobbit to partner in Merry. And I love the idea of Frodo's smile actually reaching his eyes this time.

Author Reply: Indeed. Sort of a miracle, and restoring what was once lost, even though Bright Nose is gone.

Thanks!

'Yes, he is bright...' Merry said absently. He smiled. 'His name is Jewel.' He turned to meet his older cousin's gaze.

For the first time in a long time, Frodo's smile went all the way to his eyes.

Oh! Just so wonderful! I love it all. Poor sweet pony, I'm glad he'll have one of the best homes in the Shire :)

Author Reply: Oh, yes, he'll go from hell to paradise... except that he'll have to put up with unusual hours, seeing as how his new master is half owl.

Thanks!

Nice little bits of the Cotton family character. it seems only right that the sons inherited their father's feel for living things. I always knew they were my faorite hobbit family. Delicious description of breakfast!

Author Reply: The Cottons are your favourite hobbit family? What a lovely thing to say! (I do love the glimpse we got of the farmer in the original, during the scouring of the Shire.)

I got to know them a little better in "A Small and Passing Thing" and found them to be "salt of the earth", as my grandmother used to say. *g*

Brilliant Lindelea. To see the potential in the used and abused is a rare gift. I am glad that Frodo is there to be part of this redemption

Author Reply: Yes, Frodo was an essential part; he'd understand better than any other, I think.

Thanks!
