Behold, An Elf!  by Eruanneth_Luin 17 Review(s)
Death-Within-MeReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/14/2014
Hello! This might be a late review(very late) but I just read this story a few weeks ago and I just became a new member today~
I want to say that this is officially one of my favorite Tolkien fanfictions out there and that you are a very gifted writer. You definitely know your materials and I noticed that you add some interesting additions to plots and characters to your fanfics.

‘Behold! An Elf!’ is one of those stories that made me feel very emotional after reading and that is a very good thing. However, this isn’t your fault or anything, but there are some elements in this story that made me mad/sad/bewildered and hurt. I have read the reviews for this story and I am extremely surprised that no one has mentioned these things I am about to list! At first after reading, I thought it was just me and that I have to learn to accept things the way they are albeit bitterly, but this story made me think more and more and I realized that I need to make a rant. Not to you as a writer, but just to the characters if you don’t mind. In other words, if I’m yelling, it’s to the characters. Not you particularly. Keep in mind, I can tell that you are an adult and I am still a teenage girl so our minds are probably very different, especially in terms of maturity. :)

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“May I touch your hair?” I asked with awe. Possibly a very rude request of this unearthly creature, but ye have not because ye ask not came to mind.

“I have always loved long hair,” I explained reddening slightly

“You may,” he acquiesced.)

-“Acquiesced?” Does that mean he accepted or did he accept reluctantly?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“Please release me before I drown! “ I thought frantically, and he released me instantly, confirming to my mind the elvish ability to read thoughts.)

-Did he actually read her thoughts or was it her imagination?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“Why me? Why now?”

“You are sincere in your quest to learn of and from the Eldar, your home is secluded, and you harbor no desire to bond or join physically with the Firstborn.”)

-The first two reasons aside, “…and you harbor no desire to bond or join physically with the Firstborn.”

…Really, elf? You actually listed that as one of the reasons? Should we mortals be offended? I don’t even know what I am appalled at anymore but all I know is that I am seriously judging you.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“You are correct, of course,” I said with regret, “Every instance of Elf/Mortal union ended in tragedy and loss with Andreth and Aegnor the ultimate sorrow, never together and forever apart. But you are the most wondrous being I have ever met and the thought is appealing,” I continued, unable to deny the attraction.

Uncomfortable at skirting a forbidden topic I asked, “May we change the subject?”

“Yes.”

“Will you return again?” almost pleadingly I questioned.

“Perhaps.”)

-I thank you for the awkward and one-sided conversation my lord. It is doing very well to my already rattled nerves.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(Noticing the silence at last I left off my study of elves to find myself suddenly the object of elvish gazes followed closely by grins before they turned back toward each other and exchanged what seemed a private joke at my expense.)

-Huh, and they treat Alysha as if she is the only rude one.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(Elrohir spoke finally in English, “Like an elfling, she is filled with unending curiosity and questions,” Glorfindel joining him in amused laughter.)

-Yes well, when you magically appear from the sky from a different, ‘fictional’ universe in front of an alarmed, defenseless woman that is the reaction you are supposed to get, oh wise ones.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“Glorfindel, you spoke truly, formidable indeed for a human,” Celeborn said wryly.)

-Excuse me? What do you mean by “for a human?”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(Glorfindel turning to Elrohir spoke in English, obviously for my benefit, “I will concede your choice of this mortal is unusual and occasionally entertaining.” With that said, he beamed wickedly in my direction, further discomposing me.

“I suppose I should thank you for the kind words,” I fumed, feeling quite put upon and the brunt of far too much elvish amusement. “I am, after all, only human.”

Celeborn glanced at me with a look of disapproval that told me that excuse would not be acceptable and I should have a care in his presence.)

-I find it astonishing that Celeborn disapproves of her ‘human excuse’ yet he didn’t say anything about Glorfindel’s ‘“I will concede your choice of this mortal is unusual and occasionally entertaining.”’

Talking about a pot calling a kettle black.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“We will speak no more of this matter, troublesome human.”)

-. . .

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(As I turned toward Celeborn to ask another question, he halted me with an upraised hand. “Mistake me not for Finrod to your Andreth,” he stated firmly, “I have not the affection for your race that Finrod had, which brought him only untimely death in the end. My Lady still grieves the loss of her brother, Aegnor, who has vowed never to return for love of a mortal.”)

-Alright, from my conversation with you, I understand that I am not allowed to be curious. I also understand that you can be as condescending to our race as much as you want and we are not allowed to rebuke, but just sit there and accept. I also understand that I have to act as polite as I can around you, but you don’t have to return the same behavior. Not only have you insult us mortals once, but twice and perhaps even more. Thank you for your kindness and clarity, my lord Celeborn.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“Have I hurt you? If you would rather have Glorfindel braid your hair, I will understand.” I said with sincere regret both for his discomfort and my lost prize; its shimmering glory exquisite to the touch.

Glorfindel in a tight voice explained, “Our hair lives and is not unlike skin to the touch. When in the hands of our mate it is intensely pleasurable; in the hands of others, tolerated, if done with care. Elrohir can sense your enjoyment through your touch, and thus suffers.”

Sitting back abruptly on my heels the dawning horror of the magnitude of my transgression overwhelmed me. A hand flew to my mouth in shock and tears welled in my eyes, mutely begging his forgiveness. Unable to look at him in my humiliation, I turned my face away. Not for the first time had I crossed an unseen line to my detriment, now dishonoring this great-hearted elf in the process.)

-What in the world…what was that?! If you clearly knew this would happen and that you would suffer then why the hell did you let her do that?! If you knew your peers would react the way they did, why did you risk Alysha and yourself in this stupid problem in the first place?! Not only have you raised her hopes only to crush it mercilessly, you have also made her look bad as if the shame is all on her!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(Compassion for my plight unmistakable on his face, he said softly, “If you treat me with elvish respect and wish to continue now that you and I are mindful of the truth of elvish hair, I will allow it.”)

-scoffs- Oh he will “allow” it, he says.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“Please let Glorfindel do it,” I replied. His instantaneous look of reprieve was so unmistakable I had to smile.)

-He has the nerve to look “reprieve?” He loves adding more salt to the wound doesn’t he?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(Returning to sit on the steps, I glanced toward Celeborn who was now gazing thoughtfully at me. With an almost imperceptible nod of his head he signaled approval. To know that I was again in his good graces eased my mortification.)

-Oh, I don’t doubt his mighty lord is very pleased! Alysha, I congratulate you for having put up with these insufferable bastards this far.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(“He will not forget the lesson and it may save his life one day,” Glorfindel stated matter-of-factly, “Proceed with your work.”)

-. . .Did you just give her an order?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(With a slightly shaky finger I tried to apply the cool, fragrant ointment to Elrohir’s arm, not wanting to cause him more discomfort. Elrohir chuckled at my futile attempt to do so without touching his skin.

“You need not be hesitant when tending injuries. I am well used to much less sympathetic treatment,” he said glancing down at Glorfindel with a wince of pain.

“That was not the only reason, Elrohir,” I mumbled, trying vainly not to blush.

“I trust you to keep within the bounds established,” Elrohir said bluntly, “Now please continue, as the salve eases pain.”)

-Yes. I am so done here. Alysha clearly expressed that she does not wish to touch you because your wonderful saying of “you harbor no desire to bond or join physically with the Firstborn,” she knows the affect you have on her and because of that little hair scenario you have created. Don’t you see she already feels unnecessarily bad and paranoid because of it?!

But no. You just had to say “I trust you to keep within the bounds established.”

I am very sure she already knows that from you guys’ treatment of her, you idiot. There you go again, adding more bitter shame and loneliness to her. Why don’t you go have your friend heal you or heal yourself instead.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(It brought back childhood memories of my ear pressed to my daddy’s chest, listening to his heartbeat, feeling warm and safe. With a sigh I sat back, my part of the nursing finished, I thought. But Glorfindel had other uses for me.

“Take this bandage and bind his arm and side, then you may bring fresh water.”)

-Again, I congratulate you, Alysha, for putting up with these ‘ethereal’ creatures.

(Celeborn added, “Elrohir speaks truly. For all your flaws, at least you endeavor to improve.”)

-You are talking about her flaws in the languages right?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

(Though desire for my favorite fruit warred with polite manners for a moment, the wish to share them with these glorious, kind-hearted elves overcame both feelings.)

-Alysha sure is generously liberal in using the word ‘kind’ on these three elves.

I find it astonishing how throughout the story, it’s only Alysha doing the excessive apologizing and asking for forgiveness, huh.

And that there concludes my rant. If you read through this whole thing, thank you. I mean it sincerely this time. I am not ignorant to the fact that the elves have displayed many acts of kindness in the story, but the actions that I find distasteful just happen to stick out like a sore thumb to me.

If you find me overly sensitive, I understand. I do happen to let my emotions get the better of me most of the times.

One more thing I would like to add, I have read most of your fanfictions and I have noticed that you are quite prudish and conservative on the topic of sex. Are the elves really that conservative? Have you done extensive research on this? Because reading about their prudishness made me a bit uncomfortable as well.

I enjoyed this story very much.To find out that you are not only related to Arwen, but you are talking to your grandfather and uncle that you have only read about would throw any body off.I love the bit about the strawberry every year. I'm glad that Celborn went home.I hope you let us know what happens to Alysha.Love Galathil

I loved this story. I hope you will do a follow-up where she is invited to see Rivendel. Since she is a descendant of Arwen I would be fitting!

Author Reply: Thank you for the encouragement. This tale was like a dream come true for me, but I find writing in Tolkien’s world much more fulfilling, and there are so many tantalizing stories yet to unfold.

What a marvelous story! I cannot imagine a more wonderful thing than to look out at the edge of the woods one day and suddenly see an elf! Don't you think sometimes that they just might be there...just out of our line of vision or on the edge of reality!

And your three elves were wonderful - each separate and individual. Glorfindel was great, with his Aman-charged hair, and Celeborn was very majestic and authoritative, very much a prince of Doriath. But my favorite was Elrohir - such a kind, compassionate, and understanding elf. I hope when this last tie to Arwen passes, he feels he will be able to sail (I presume Elladan is around somewhere, too) and be reunited with his mother and father in the Blessed Realm. Loved the sword dance...loved the picnic...but I really loved her fascination with their hair, and I can't say as I blame her. Given the chance, I would have probably asked to touch their hair too! Lovely, lovely story, Eruanneth. Thank you!

Author Reply: The yearning for a fleeting glimpse of a soft-footed elf was exactly what motivated me to write this tale. Faerie may well be just outside our perceptions, but no less wonderful!

I have always thought of elves as distinct from one another as are humans. Influenced by heritage, surroundings, different degrees of Light, as well as natural talents, though they share the basic elven nature they act and react to the lives uniquely.

Ah, Glorfindel, the sun-haired merry elf, bringing joy and strength, Celeborn, er..pardon me, Lord Celeborn, not to be trifled with, yet warm-hearted, and of course, our favorite, Elrohir. Maybe the added human bloodline gives him that special affinity and affection for mortals.

Oh, elven hair. (sigh deeply) My particular weakness is long, flowing hair and elven tresses especially. If ever the opportunity presents itself…… Enough said I believe.

This story is my dream and I am delighted that others enjoy the adventure into Faerie.

What a lovely surprise I found in my e-mail this afternoon! Thank you so much!

I like your style here. Your Elves really have three-dimensional personalities -- they're not just one character trait repeated endlessly. The writing is very intense and helps marvelously to convey the overwhelming nature of Elven personality. And they are three such different personalities, too!

My favorite detail about this is the way you write their hair. The way it feels, the warmth it exudes, its habit of curling around people's wrists -- who knew Elves had prehensile hair? And then the way you maintain the personality you've given the hair by noting that Glorfindel's hairs have been "separated, quite neatly, from their elf." That was a fantastic little moment.

Author Reply: Thank you for your kind words. As for Elves, they never did seem to be alike; their talents as varied as their character traits, distinct and uniquely blended. Though for most of the tale I felt rather the conduit than the writer, so there was a strange sense of 'a time in the presence of Elves'.

Ah, the hair! There is something so enchanting in the viewing of long flowing locks of elvish hair.:) Glorfindel being a twice-born would have some interesting quatilies that others would not possess. What was described had more to do with the electrical charge in his hair than a prehensile attribute. Not in his control, but rather reacting to the presence of inquiring hand reaching out. And the image of "separated, quite neatly, from their elf" simply flowed from fingers to keyboard without planning. (I take no credit.)

You write this so well,I can almost believe that you were visted by those glorious beings, and sometimes I wonder, maybe God did creat some other beings(hint:elves)and they really are out there somewhere.Maybe some certain lucky people such as yourself actually do get visited by them.
Question,I am studying Quenya, and I am a little confused as to who Iluvetar is, my Quenya transelation says Eru is God,maiar is wizards(like Gandalf)but who is the Valar and the arda?Just wondering, your story is GREAT!

Author Reply: Thank you for the kind words, they are greatly appreciated! Perhaps we, like Tolkien, write of elves that they not fade from sight in this far from merry world. It is my fondest wish to meet a live Tolkien Elf someday. (Big sigh)

As for Ilúvatar, in the first sentence of The Silmarillion it is explained that he is Eru who is called Ilúvatar in Arda. Arda is the world or earth, the Valar are divine beings created by Eru who added to the formation of the surface of Arda and dwell within its realm. Maiar include Sauron and Saurman, Valar include Melkor/Morgoth.

Eruanneth, this is delightful. Like the Elves of whom you speak, there is brightness and cheer, melancholy and charm, sweetness and sadness. Your characterizations of each Elf are wonderful, with great power and individuality; I especially like your descriptions of how each of them appeared, and the differences given their ages and experiences. A very beautiful piece of work--it makes me long for a visit of my own! :-)

Thank you for sharing this delightful tale!

Author Reply: The longing for a visit is the primary motivation for this tale finally being written, though I doubted I would ever find the courage or site to post. Now I learn that I am not the only one who glances sidelong into the trees in hope of a glimpse of fair elven folk passing by and sees elves as different from each other as stars and trees.

Thank you for reading and enjoying this little tale. It has been worth the trepidations and became at last a labour of love.

Well, I think I would have swooned too, though possibly not from compassion ;)

This is a lovely little story and I'm very flattered that you mentioned me in it - I live on in fiction! Long live Calandil too! I'm so chuffed about that :)

Beautiful descriptions, and I love the way you've captured the genuine otherness of elves. Distinctly *not* just pretty humans with pointy ears. Glorfindel's prehensile hair was an amazing touch - I liked the way she could feel the light of Aman like an electric shock.

And I'm very glad that Celeborn sailed in the end, because being here that long had obviously had a very bad effect on his temper - what a rude and unpleasent elf! But I guess that if he's worn out and miserable and at the end of his tether it's understandable enough. Let's hope that Aman sweetens him a little :)

What else can I say but envy - I wish it had happened to me!

Author Reply: A certain ‘visit’ to Imladris sparked the tale of this encounter, so you deserve to be included. Besides it just appeared on the page and I left it there.

When I think of Calandil it causes a strong hope to hear more of his friendship and adventures with a silver-haired lord. This is a non-subtle hint!

The Lord Celeborn was in temperament very unlike Elrohir and Glorfindel. He required respect and circumspect behavior. How else could he have wooed and wed the most daunting Elven maid in Arda or Valinor? Not a challenge many elves would endeavor to meet.

I wish it happened to me also!
