In the Deep Places  by Lamiel 4 Review(s)

Most excellent! I loved the whole thing from the Elven perspective, especially the part about birthdays and the passing of time. It is true that we, as mortals, have only limited time on earth and must make the most of it.

The insights into Legolas' family life were well done and very welcome.

Legolas and Gimli continued to go at it, and it's rather amusing to see it unfold. I especially like the part about Legolas letting Gimli take off his helmet first. :)

I enjoyed Legolas' thoughts on human birthday celebrations and the differences between elves and humans. I always like watching people discover/ruminate on cultural differences.

But some parts of this should have come with a coffee warning. I particularly liked:

Worse still, in the evenings the more friendly of the mortals would attempt to show hospitality by dragging the Elves into smoky, dark taverns and forcing tankards of ale and hours of off-key singing upon them.

He certainly never threatened to shoot the locals, as Thranduil’s third son Ellomë had done after being subjected to innumerable quantities of pipeweed smoke and a forty-five minute rendition of “The Lay of Leithien.”

in view of the probable outcome of such a test, Legolas might even allow Gimli to take the helmet off first.

I snorted or spit coffee for each of these. Great chapter. I'm looking forward to the update.

Author Reply: Grin. I'm so glad that you enjoy the bits of humor here and there. We do need something to relieve the angst, after all. And you picked up on a few of my favorite lines from this chapter. Thank you, Elliska. Hope the coffee didn't hurt your keyboard too much.

You do a great job of describing Legolas's increasing sense of isolation as he is cut off from the outside world, amongst mortals he does not understand. No wonder he is tense and jumpy!

So now he and Gimli are going off together to scout ahead? Why do I feel that disaster is about the strike?

Author Reply: What, Legolas and Gimli alone together, with weapons, in the dark, deep underground, and the possibility of Orcs about? What could possibly go wrong with that?

Poor Legolas. He must be feeling bad if he is prepared to co-operate with Gimli. I love the way the detail expands on his background and his reasons for being the sort of elf he is.

I particularly enjoyed the older brother, Ellome, and his reaction to the delights of spending an evening in the company of Men. Yes, it's probably just as well Elrond didn't send him with Gandalf. Although, as a reaction to an evening of karaoke, I think his response is more than excusable.

It must be fun for Gandalf trying to hold this lot together. The Balrog may have come as a relief!

Author Reply: Personally I feel that Ellome's reaction was perfectly reasonable, although it may have contributed to the Wood-elves' reputation of being "less wise and more dangerous" than their Noldor cousins. Now if only I had recourse to a longbow in situations like that...
