Poor brown kitty! Mean ol' Eowyn! lol Very clever, and very true of "cat haters". But I'm glad you brought her to the Light Side. ::giggle:: Lovely story, Werecat. :)

I'm glad you suggested this to me. It is also very good. My mother actually believed all those stupid superstitions about cats--everyone of them that you mentioned and a lot more on top of that. Nutsy. Poor maligned cats. I really like how you made them heroes against the Plague. You are really good at working little bits of canon into your stories (like the Great Plague, for example). Those are my favorite types of stories (along with ones with animals).

I like Eowyn's initial confrontation with the cat--I can definitely see that scene--and then her later acceptance of the cat in her son's cradle. That was a very sweet and hopeful image. I also like the description--again it's the attention to detail that brings this to life (ex. such a simple description of the cradle but still I could picture it perfectly).

Great story. You are now going on my favorites list before I get interrupted and forget to do it like I did last Saturday morning. :)

I did much research for this one; ever since I've read about the Plague, I saw so many parallells with Black Death that I wouldn't let it go by without writing something on it. The superstitions and Eowyn's involvment came much later.

again it's the attention to detail that brings this to life

Thanks for that too. I find details very important and, well, I have great fun writing those little bits in the story.

You are now going on my favorites list

Oh I love your cat stories set in Middle Earth! What else can I say? You must be a fellow cat lover surely!

Author Reply: Thank you, Shemyaza!

And yes, I'm a fellow cat lover. Cat servant, in fact...

I do like this. Poor Eowyn - the stillbirth is likely to make her want to avoid anything that superstition might touch, just in case. I loved the trunks full of her history.

I do feel sorry for Beruthiel - she seems to have been victimised and vilified, with I don't know how much justification - makes me think of witchfinders.

Goodness, there are some stupid anti-cat superstitions.

Author Reply: Thank you, Bodkin, for reading.

I'm glad you liked it, especially about Eowyn. As for Beruthiel and the cats, yes, both are greatly misaderstood, IMHO.

Thanks again,
Werecat

Lovely tale, Werecat! I like how you have woven the history of Gondor and middle-earth and the plague with the superstitions about cats.

Your OC's really do come alive, Luthwen is wonderful, and I can see Eowyn's roots in the culture Tolkien chose for the Rohirrim coming through in her beliefs about the cats. Although, I still wouldn't let a cat sleep with an infant who couldn't push the cat off its face should they cuddle too close. However, your cats seem smart enough to watch out for the babe. :)

Author Reply: Thanks, Nilmandra!

I'm glad you liked my OFC and Eowyn's background. Af for the cat/baby thing, I thought that if female cats are careful enough not to suffocate their young, they would pose no threat to a huma baby.

On the other hand, I never had children, so, perhaps I'm way off in this.

Thanks for reading,
Werecat
