The ways of Hobbits are truly fascinating, aren't they? I'm not British by the way, it is just the fancy language of Tolkien's works affecting me so.

O hurrah! A *most* promising beginning! I hardly know where to start, there are so many lovely bits that caught my eye. Merry with a bucket of ale! *g* (and I can see him dipping some smaller container into it as he works his way through the whole) The Rider who reminds him of Pippin! (the sudden changes of topic, hehe) The Riders never having imagined a different calendar, and Merry's casual thought that he ought to write down the differing calendars some day... and his regaling the Riders with Shire customs. Gandalf's appearance, and the ensuring conversation. And Merry being tired... (of course!) And tomorrow is Sam's birthday. O I do hope you keep working on this and post more soon. Author Reply: Thank you! A new chapter is up now. I think both the riders and Merry find eachother curious about the others customs and having a totally different set of reckoning things are a large difference. And yes, Poor Sam not getting to celebrate his birthday. Gandalf knows Merry all to well I think, watching out for him as he watches over the others as I explain in what looks to be a prequel to this actually - the chapter Pippin of Cousins on watch.
