Wow! If that's what reading Beowulf and listening to the Two Towers soundtrack can do, I'm sold! I'm going out to find a copy of Beowulf! How poetic and powerful.

Magnificent - from the first word to the last!

I love poetry, particularly poetic writing, and To Hope's End has succinctly whetted my appetite, leaving me not at all sated with this mere morsel of exquisite prose, but hungry and longing for more. This was a sumptous fare, its very deliciousness leaving me salivating expectantly. And how long, divine ErinRua, must we await our next serving??

Wonderful writing. Truly wonderful.

Author Reply: LOL, are you a hobbit, dear lady? Speaking in such sumptuous terms is both lovely and appetite-enducing. ;-) I am delighted you enjoyed this story so well, and you put a true smile on my face. As for the next serving ... Hard to say, the muses are tricky, but we'll hope they are not silent for too long. Thank you for your kind words! :-)

WOW! That was absolutely amazing! You are truly gifted! It will forever change the way I see that battle, especially when the EE DVD comes out! :D

Thank you for that beautiful piece.

Author Reply: Hello Dayna ~
Oh, gosh, that's just the best compliment ever, to know I've changed or added to your view on part of the original story. I am now completely content. :-) Thank you so much! :-)

I think I've come to expect the poetry of ErinRua's writings. It's certainly evident in this piece. In addition to the sound and feel of the words, I really liked the portrayal of Eowyn the heroine, seen through the ordinary soldier's eyes. What a wonderful perception of courage. Good job. - Chathol-linn

Author Reply: Bless you, Chathol-linn!
It's wonderful to hear what worked for you, in this pieace, and even more delightful to hear that the Eowyn part was a nice segment for you. That was tough to write, so your kind words mean ever so much to me! Thank you! :-)

Oh, wow, how thrilling and chilling and inspirational!

I am in awe of how you can takes Tolkien's already-beautiful words and turn them into sheer poetry:

"we are the torrent, the white freshet of Spring"

"the dew falls scarlet on the grass"

"a cry rings clear like the strike of a silver bell"

"slow claws on my naked soul"

"a thunder of leathern wings"

"a mantle that spills one last, keening cry"

This is truly superb, ErinRua! It gave me goose-bumps.

- Barbara

P.S. a couple of typos: Pelannor -> Pelennor, and holbytlan is plural, holbytla is singular.

Author Reply: *sniffle*
You guys are too good to me ... Thank you so much, Barbara, both for your wonderful praise, and especially for the typos. Eeks! I'm so glad you caught those! Thank you for everything! :-)

ErinRua!

That was brilliant! First, reading Beowulf and then thinking of the Rohirrim is a leap of about 1 cm. And the TT soundtrack is my favourite of the three. Especially the music involving the Rohirrim. The origins of idea for the Rohirrim is very Anglo-Saxon as you probably know already. Tolkien was an Anglo-Saxon scholar, after all.

Second you keep the feel of Anglo-Saxon wording and phrasing beautifully, even without it being written in the form of Anglo-Saxon poetry it still reads like it. And it fit the Rohirrim and the way they view the world so well!

"His rage is a shriek tearing the firmament of my soul, and doom is the brittle splintering of her shield."

And

"Cold eyed and beautiful, her helm fallen away from the golden glory of her hair." Wonderful.

Suffice to say I loved it!

That's twice in reading reviews now I've felt like grabbing someone and hugging them for joy! Thank you so much! I really wasn't sure if the weight of language in this thing would be too ponderous, so it's such a relief and delight to read your encouraging words. Thank you! :-)

This had the feel of epic poetry. It was rousing, passionate and beautifully worded. It very effectively evoked the strong emotions of that annonymous warrior. As always, your writing is a great pleasure to read! TF

Author Reply: Thank you, TithenFeredir!
Your review is a blessing in letting me know that tinkering in poetics didn't cost me my prose. Thank you so much for your encouragement. :-)

You know, this is how you win so many mithrils.....

Your stories may be considered flawless diamonds, shining more brilliantly than the brightest stars. Your prose has more strength than a mighty river forging its way through ancient stone. It seeps through our souls and crashes against are hearts, leaving its mark of beauty forever upon us.

Mine own hard work and toil shall eternally remain common-place in the wake of such magnificance. I suppose you should adjust your trophy case for next April; you'll need the extra room.

Keep writing.

Author Reply: Oh, Drake!

The prose of your praise is enough to bring me to tears. Thank you, dear man, for the generous kindness of your thought. You are ever a bright spark and a warming light. Thank you! :-)
