Dreamflower's Mathoms I  by Dreamflower 9 Review(s)

Oh, I love it! Can certainly identify with Pippin's missing his music-if I have to go more than a week without touching a piano or penny whistle or something I just go nuts. Legolas really is one of the most wonderful Elves in Middle-earth. :) I could almost hear the music. Beautiful!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Yes, my Pippin in particular would miss his music--and that is something Legolas can certainly understand.

I'm rather fond of Legolas myself!

I'm glad you liked it!

What a lovely story!

Someone as musical as Pippin, no doubt he *would* miss playing a musical instrument. He loves his music so.

This is a beautiful moment that helps show the bond between Legolas and Pippin. For all of his otherworldliness, Legolas was quite upset when Merry and Pippin were taken. The idea of what the Uruk-hai might have done to them was very distressing.

Music is something that they both share. That and a love of climbing trees. What a special gift for Legolas to give Pippin music.

Author Reply: I thought that yes, he would miss his fiddle and his other instruments. And Legolas might know of an instrument--I've always thought panpipes had a sort of eerie Elven sound to them. They are an ancient instrument--so I thought that Legolas might play them, and perhaps know how to make them.

Legolas had indeed grown to love the hobbits. I can remember so clearly his thoughts at what the Uruk-hai might do; "the thought of those merry young folk driven like cattle burns my heart". You know, it may well be that the Uruk-hai were fortunate in being wiped out by the Rohirrim. An Elf with a grudge and heartburn would be a fearsome thing indeed.

I'm glad you thought this special; thank you.

Oh, that was sweet! Good characterization and dialogue. I liked Legolas' sensitivity to Pip's moods, and the fact that you remembered that the elf also is a musician. It makes sense that if he sings all the time, that he'd pick up at least one instrument. Pippin here reminded me of my daughter - she can't bear to listen to rehearsals with me unless she gets to sing, but she doesn't know all the meanings yet. So we end up with a 5 year old in the mezzo section singing happily away in Gaelic, Ladino, French, etc. :)

Author Reply: Thank you. I think that Legolas connected to the different hobbits in different ways. Pippin loves music and trees, and these things would be a basis for something in common in their friendship. I have not explored the friendships between the Fellowship and the hobbits as much as just the hobbits, but I think I've rather scratched the surface a bit with Legolas.

I love the way some very musical people are able to pick up songs in languages they don't know. I love *listening* to such songs, (especially Sindarin and Gaelic) but don't really know how to produce the words myself.

Again, a wonderful glimpse of one of the brief moments between.

Author Reply: Most of my "Quest" stories are very brief. My longer stories tend to be pre- or post-Quest. I am glad you liked it.

oh, I like this one. I love the way that you bring out Pip's musical abilities. And it's nice to have an elf-hobbit moment. I also liked your comment on the Big People getting bored with the hobbits family tree description:)

Author Reply: My Pip's very musical indeed. It's one of the main things he has in common with Legolas.
I can just imagine as a hobbit gets to the part about "second cousin once removed on my mother's side and third cousin twice removed on my father's" that the listener's eys just start to glaze over...

I read this the other day on your LJ... it's such a lovely scene, and very touching. I love Pippin and Legolas together and I think it's very sweet that Legolas can appreciate Pippin's music, even if he is an elf :)

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I think Legolas would appreciate Pippin's natural abilities, though they would be far diffent than an Elf's. I can, for example imagine them singing together--Legolas would have this cool crystal ethereal kind of voice, while Pippin's voice would be light and yet earthy and warm. Together they would make a lovely combination.

'Pippin could already sing a number of songs in Sindarin, without a clue as to what they meant.'

I love the potential for danger in this . . . picking up Dwarvish songs that insult Elves. Elvish songs that talk about the perfidy of Men . . . which he then sings in Minas Tirith. He could even start singing Orcish marching songs.

Author Reply: Now there's a plot bunny...(shoo...shoo...I don't have time for you...go back to Bodkin, there's a good bunny...)

Now the others I can see him doing, but I draw the line at Orc songs--Black Speech is not very nice to listen to. He might, however, make his own "translation" of what he *thinks* it means (like Bilbo with "Down Down to Goblin Town).

Another story that just flows, start to finish.

Legolas' sensitivity, perceiving the difference in moods, and his quickness at thinking up a solution.

Pippin's politely refraining from family trees, though he doesn't understand. And his picking up music and words he doesn't understand, for the love of the music!

And the duet at the end, unconscious of listeners.

Very nice.

Author Reply: Thank you very much! I really love to write Legolas with the hobbits. I think that he truly loves them, and is fascinated by them. Of course, he is quickly able to understand Pippin's thoughtful mood, very different from Pip's usual cheerfulness.

Pip and Merry however, tend to think of their companions as large hobbits, and have to remind themselves every so often that they are not. The idea that someone is not interested in how people are related seems very strange to them.

And I thought it would be neat to have them so absorbed in the music that they just didn't take notice of the audience.
