" “And you are entirely too bright and chipper for someone who’s never been to bed at all...." I always said that Merry was intelligent! I suppose someone has to do it, but such hours! I hope Pippin doesn't have that third watch for that long. "Pippin had been horribly afraid they would order Merry to go along, but he had held his tongue, knowing that if they did, it would be hard enough for his cousin without him adding his whining into it. But nothing had been said, and finally Merry had screwed up his courage to ask. The young king of Rohan had smiled and shaken his head." I love how the cousins always look out for each other. And it's quite clear that Pippin has grown up, caring so much about Merry that he doesn't use those big green eyes or his other tactics to make Merry feel guilty about something beyond his control. Although I certainly would have stopped to watch these two hobbits taking nap, I would not have liked the audience had I been one of the "sleeping pheriannath." They must have looked so adorable! A well earned nap for both of them. When Frodo and Sam joined them, it reminded me so much of your story about "the day after the night before" when they all fell asleep outside at Bag End. Were Fatty and Folco with them in that story? Anyway, a truly delightful image of our dear hobbits. I imagine that special bond between the four of them made it even easier for the four of them to all find peaceful sleep together in that garden. Sleep well, dear hobbits! Author Reply: Yes, the "graveyard shift" is not much fun. But, as you say, someone had to do it. I am sure that Pippin could probably have gotten out of it, but I am equally sure that he would have done no such thing--he'd want to prove he could do all the duties the Men did. I could see Merry worrying about his conflicting duties to his liege and to his family--but of course, Eomer would not have done that to Merry. And yes, Pippin has grown a good deal. Time was, he probably would have been asking Merry to the point of irritation whether he had to go or not, but not any more. I know I'd stop and stare at the cute little sleeping hobbits, LOL! Funny thing is, this story was written a good while before "Morning After", and I worried a bit about them being too similar. But yes, in the (chronologically earlier) story, Fatty and Folco were there as well. But I love sleeping hobbits--there can't be too many such stories to suit me, grin!

A lovely nap, although I'm with Aragorn--sleeping in front of an audience wouldn't be my idea of proper at all. Nice, gentle story. Author Reply: Thank you. I think at that point they were both so tired they would not have cared if the whole city was watching. But Aragorn and Frodo would look out for them.

Aw! This is so sweet! I can just see this crowd of people gathering to look at the hobbits sleeping. Well done :) Author Reply: I have to say, if I saw two hobbits sleeping in the garden, I'd certainly stop and stare--wouldn't it be a lovely sight? And all these people are so grateful to the hobbits, I guess they can't get enough of them.

Nice.. Merry and pippin out for a picnic,and Merry recalls the time frodo made pippin a kite. Pippin had the night watch and falls asleep at Merry's side. An adience is crowder around them as they sleep,and frodo and sam are quiet put out by them crowding around. Even Aragorn takes one last look as they sleep, befor returning to his work... A nice story,of the bond between them all...Keep up the good work.... Author Reply: Thank you for the lovely review--the bond between them all, isn't that what all of it is all about? The love and the friendship.

Sleepy hobbits! How cute! And I loved the audience. This one made me smile. :) Author Reply: I know if I saw a pair of hobbits sleeping I'd certainly stop and stare--at the very least!

Oh how funny. Out for a nice picnic and end up sleeping the rest of the day. I can understand Pip's tiredness. I never could get the hang of switching shifts back when I had to do it. At least the current job doesn't demand it. I'm glad that Aragorn took the hint though and dispersed the crowd. Author Reply: Yes, poor tired Pippin! But a nap in the sunshine's not so bad. And it would have been hard not to take Frodo's hint--he wasn't exactly subtle, was he? grin

I love the little touches you add to a story: “And you are entirely too bright and chipper for someone who’s never been to bed at all. What time did they send you down from the Tower?” (I'd agree, had I not had six weeks of Third Watch, myself, and in a tropical paradise into the bargain. Who needs sleep? I would go to work just before midnight, get off at 1 p.m., spend much of the afternoon on the beach (did get a little dozing in, there on the sand under the sun), ate dinner, saw a show or caught a nap, and went back to work. It was easier to do at Pippin's age, I suspect, than it would be nowadays.) Merry had just taken a large bite. He rolled his eyes and pointed to his mouth, as he chewed and swallowed. He took a sip of tea before replying. Pippin went to change out of his livery, while Merry packed up a large basket with bread, cheese, fruit, some boiled eggs, some hard sausage and a bottle of wine. They went out into the sunshine of an early summer morning, and made the leisurely trek to the grounds of the Houses of Healing. There was a spot there in the gardens that the hobbits had found made for lovely picnicking. A stone wall broke the wind that was a constant so high up, and all along it small fruit trees had been planted and trained to grow flat against the wall. There were beds of sweet smelling herbs scattered about, and low growing thyme made for a fragrant ground cover. Merry and Pippin found a spot beneath a blooming pear tree, and sat with their backs against the sun-warmed stone of the wall as they dug into their provisions. Finally, sated, they put the remnants of their meal into the basket, and Pippin leaned companionably into his cousin’s side, as they watched the clouds. Why don't I just quote the whole story, LOL! Wonderful details! Now they stood there amid a small crowd which had gathered at a respectful distance, apparently with nothing better to do than to stare at two sleeping pheriannath. "nothing better to do"--human nature! All this fuss over two sleeping hobbits. Very "Sam". All your characters sound wonderfully in character. Thanks for the comforting read. Author Reply: Thank you for the wonderful review. It's always a delight to know what parts of a story the reader liked best. I'm glad everyone seems to be in character. In some stories that is easier to do than in others. This one rather seemed to write itself. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun writing it.

Hobbit-watching as a spectator sport - could be done. Just need to work out a way of charging for entry. Somehow snoozing the day away in the fresh air and sunshine seems much more relaxing for people whose nights are haunted. I think they should wake up thoroughly refreshed. Author Reply: I'm sure there are an awful lot of folks who'd line up for tickets--and pay premium prices, LOL! I hope they do wake refreshed. A nap in the sunshine was probably exactly what they needed. You will notice that Aragorn seemed rather pleased by it.
