Aha! So Thorongil is familiar with the devious nature of dragon-talk, is he? Yes, let the challenge go on. Author Reply: Since Thorongil has spent his younger days in Imladris and was certainly present when Bilbo returned (though I am not sure if they met), I bet that he is very familiar with Bilbo's adventure and the demise of Smaug. Furthermore, I am quite sure that there were few things Denethor in his obsession to gain knowledge and control about everyone and everything did not try in order to discover more about his secretive Captain.

The sparring between Thorongil and Denethor must have become intense at times, as Denethor sought to prove his suspicions. Love this, and love the dragon-talk. Author Reply: And I bet Denethor would have left no stone unturned in order to unravel the mystery that was Captain Thorongil. I am glad you liked Denethor's more 'creative' approach :-)

I can imagine that Denethor would be good at dragon-talk. And that he would respect the ability in others. Author Reply: Oh yes, he would be a dragon-talk expert:-). And Aragorn is more than up for the challenge. Thanks for the review (and sorry for the late reply), fliewatuet

I've read this drabble before; and it hasn't lost its luster - smooth and subtle as Denethor on his best day, and shiny and alluring as a scale on Smaug's gleaming hide. Author Reply: And I am still glad that you like it! I figured after four years of vain attempts to figure out Thorongil, Denethor was about to try something new. - smooth and subtle as Denethor on his best day, and shiny and alluring as a scale on Smaug's gleaming hide. Wonderfully phrased! I'll read and reread this review over and over again for this phrase alone :-)
